What's most terrifying to me is that platforms like TikTok and Twitter are not meant to be useful--just to occupy your attention for as long as possible (to serve ads). And the most effective ways to do that are to numb you or to radicalize you. Media literacy is such a crucial skill for us to learn.
Yeah but it's the same for TH-cam and basically any other 'free' media, even (commercial) TV. I agree that it's not ideal (and I'm grateful that in Germany we have public service TH-cam channels financed by license fees with educational mandate that are still entertaining) buuuut just because the platforms don't give a shit about quality doesn't mean there aren't creators doing their best to give their audiences something of value. But yeah of course we need media literacy to navigate the jungle of content successfully and find these creators. It's much easier to just passively let the algorithm pull you into another rabbit hole.
Who says they can’t be useful? There’s plenty of useful content on these platforms, you just have to search for it.
don't agree about Twitter to be honest! my experience with it shows that it really helps to make friends and acquaintances more easily. i was very socially awkward before using it, and the platform helped me to communicate casually, easily start conversations with strangers and not be scared/intimidated by unfamiliar people. and Twitter is based on communication, it is the core and purpose of the app.
you won't spend hours on it just consuming content without interacting with anyone, like you can do on TikTok or TH-cam. idk, just my opinion 👁️👃👁️
I don't think TikTok CAN be useful, with how it's based on using an algorithm to serve content with automatically, whereas on a platform like TH-cam you can search for what you want/need and decide what you'll watch. Even if TikTok gives you, say, educational content you learn from, being short-form minimizes what you'll meaningfully learn, and the automated feed makes wrong information easier to spread and harder to correct.

my big issue with tiktok is with the addiction. i know its not something that makes me happy but i will still sit there for hours and scroll for tiny little serotonin bursts. the algorithm is a slot machine that keeps you on edge and rewards you just often enough that you want to stay

It has affected my attention span, but I'm very glad I've been on it. It's given me so much.
edit: I mean the people on there have sort of spoon fed me radical anti-capitalist perspectives that add to my existing ones, and new ways of looking at my disorder and neurodivergence in general. plus more.

Absolutely agree. I resisted Tik Tok for years. Then one day, I thought well why not! I spent 2 weeks and within that time, I was spending 4 or 5 hours a day on it, scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. The algorithm kept showing me the drama, weird car chases, scary 40 year men and general experts on everything who just make you feel like youre a terrible person. I got rid and now I feel so much better. That was a dark time.
I am truly terrified of how much time I would lose on tik tok if I downloaded the app. It's hard enough breaking the habit of scrolling through the comments section of every video until I inevitably find something that makes me angry and then keep going to get angrier.

I've recently uninstalled Tiktok since it's legit given me a lazy eye and it's so hard to focus on ANYTHING besides tiktok. It's ruined my attention-span and also the amount of fear mongering on there was too much for me and it was making me far too stressed being on there

On another note, I just realised how my English accent sounds suspiciously a lot like Dan's because back in 2016, when I didn't speak much English, I first started watching Dan (and Phil obvs) who ultimately taught me English. Inspiring.

@@marijag yeah, something that helped me combat that was learning that a ton of them used video filters. Have you heard of the Snow app? that shit's crazy. It helped me realize a lot of the things you see are fake and I could look just like them by using the same filters lol

I think the main issues people have with TikTok are more about the app and it’s structure itself than the people who use it.
- There’s been various privacy concerns/scandals about it as it’s owned by a Chinese company
- Its format is designed for quick engagement and quick engagement only
- Things like freebooting in the form of “reactions” that add little to no value to the original content
- Predatory content aimed at children and a lot of straight up misinformation
- A lack of ability to moderate on the side of TikTok themselves (search “the pink sauce” it’s a food-unsafe product someone is advertising on TikTok and no action has been taken for months)
- the fact that there’s a large userbase of impressionable young people that don’t use any other social media/apps is… worrying to say the least
Would be my list of reasons to take issue with it off the top of my head. Other social media have these issues, yes, and that’s why I’m not on social media anymore (aside from TH-cam, if you wanna call it that). For all its faults, TH-cam allows longform content, has the capacity for deep nuanced discussions (like this video, even), and remains a (mostly) moderate place in a rapidly radicalizing world.
As a tiktok creator I completely agree. I've stopped doing daily videos for my own sanity and those of my viewers

God THANK YOU for dragging Instagram, this year has been my worst experience on the platform ever and I started realizing what was going on when so much of what I saw was product ads and reels from accounts I didn’t even follow. Terrible year for me to start a secondary account to host my art.
