This song was released in 1969 and took over the airwaves. Mariska Veres, the lead singer, and the rest of the band spoke no english and still knocked it out of the park.
"Venus" is one of those songs where even if you think you haven't heard it, you have. It has been around for over 50 years, and it's been used for many purposes and many adzzzz.
Hey everyone! Just so there's no confusion, this video was actually filmed before my Bananarama video! The Bananarama video was released much earlier because the record label removed all copyright. Just so that's understood :)
The product that used this song was a women's razor for shaving her legs and underarms. Venus is the mythical Goddess, and so it makes sense they'd name a woman's product "Venus."
Shocking Blue were just an amazing group with an awesome lead singer in Mariska Veres who died of gall bladder cancer. She had a haunting voice in my opinion with a great look. Great song from a legendary group.
Mostly a band known in Europe, but they have some really great songs. Besides this one, my fav's are: Ink Pot, Never Marry A Railroad Man, and Daemon Lover
The commercial you're thinking of is for a Lady's Razor for their Legs, etc. It was a big hit. Shock Blue was one of the first bands from Nordic countries before ABBA and Aha.
another grand slam from Shawn, I have always enjoyed this song especially since when the group recorded it they didn’t speak english and yet the proof is in the pudding as to this being a awesome tune. ad always Shawn we all appreciate your efforts to entertain us Thank You.
Also, check out, "Mighty Joe" (which was their followup to "Venus") and "Never Marry a Railroad Man" The strumming guitar intro in "Venus" is what they are comparing to the "Pinball Wizard". Robbie van Leeuwen is still with us. He is an excellent songwriter and guitarist!
Shawn, this was one of my favorite songs to hear on the radio when I was a little kid. I believe they are Dutch. But damn I had such a crush on her. And as a budding young musician-to-be, I just felt like it was so kinetic and it had so much energy to it, and yet it still had such a colorful personality.
Shawn, every time I come to your channel, I get the impression that you have accessed and downloaded my playlist for the 60s and 70s. I have to say, you and I have great taste in music.😄
I remember this group. Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in 1967. Their 2 biggest hits were "Venus" & "Send Me A Postcard". They had some other songs such as "Long & Lonesome Road", "Mighty Joe", "Never Marry A Railroad Man" etc. The lead singer had a very powerful voice. Another famous Dutch group from that era was Golden Earring.
Funny. My Mom was taking me and my siblings out to dinner back in the day. We had the radio on a station popular in Cincinnati OH (WSAI-AM). This song came on and she totally flipped out because she thought it was saying "I'm your fetus" instead of "Venus". She forbade us to ever listen to it again. Well what she didn't know at the time wouldn't have hurt her lol but some years later we let her listen to it again and filled her in. Has been a somewhat fave of hers ever since.
Shocking Blue was a band from the Netherlands; "Venus" was recorded in 1969, but became a huge hit in the U.S. in 1971. I clearly remember digging it hearing it on the way to and from Kent Junior High School (20 miles south of Seattle). Part of this song was used in a commercial for a woman's shaver in the '90's.
I remember rocking to this one on the dance floor in 1970. It was great. One hit wonder as far as we in UK were concerned. Netherlands produced some great bands. What about Focus? Stunning talents. Listening to this one now, the guitar riffs, and sound are pure 60s. The late 60s were a great time for music. Thanks for doing this, none of the covers come close to its growl and energy.
Mariska Veres lead singer, very beautiful and amazing voice and amazing band many great songs, try "so far from home" "send me a postcard"(1968) More Shocking Blue please 😎 thanks 🏹
Take all this with a grain of salt because just my thoughts over many years. I only remember this song so always thought they were a one hit wonder, if there were other songs I do not think they were anywhere near as popular. I think they were swedish or at least she is and I heard that she did not even speak english and they had to teach her these words.
Mariska knew NOT ONE "lick" of english. She sang the song lyrics EXACTLY as written and THEY WERE WRITTEN INCORRECTLY! Hence the word "godness" instead of godess. . . . . in the very first line.
Hi Shawn! Thank you for this fantastic reaction! Can you please react to Never marry a railroad man from the same group! Thanks. Pe@ce and Blessings from Australia.

Robbie spoke English 😎🏹

No worries. Always go back to the source.
The truth and the future is always in the past.
Definitely remember this group from early 70s. Fabulous tune, fantastic vocals. Great decade for rock...🎸🎤🎶

Great song from 1970 or 71. I was in middle school, and we played this in our little garage Band at school dances.
The commercial you're thinking of is for a Lady's Razor for their Legs, etc. It was a big hit. Shock Blue was one of the first bands from Nordic countries before ABBA and Aha.
So much better than any ad reproduction that I have heard. The guitar rhythm is fabulous.

Right!? Amazing 😊
Quintessential late sixties rock/pop. Love this tune.

and the band Focus? 😊

This came out in 69.
TRUST ME on this one my music lovin' brother,, A MUST HEAR Classic,, Smith "Baby It's You" 🔥
Best version of that song.
This song came out in 1969. It's fun that they use older music for commercials. Maybe that should say something about today's music. Hahaha

Bananarama does a respectable cover of this.
Speaking of which, Cruel Summer!
Sorry I have to respectfully disagree! Original is THE BEST!
THAT was amazing. I have never seen images of this band until now.
Released 1969. I really liked it, and I hadn't ever seen the leader singer! Thanks, and God bless you!
Same!
Mariska Veres lead singer, very beautiful and amazing voice and amazing band many great songs, try "so far from home" "send me a postcard"(1968) More Shocking Blue please 😎 thanks 🏹
Great band... so many good songs, including "Send Me A Postcard" and "Never Marry A Railroad Man".
Whenever I hear this song it reminds me of the tv commercial of the Venus womens shavers
1:32 "The commercial!" - i was waiting for that (though I've never seen the commercial)

Dutch, not Swedish
The flip side of this single was "Hot Sand". Pretty cool tune as well.
I’ve always loved this song-love her voice
Dutch band with just this one monster #1 hit in the states from 1969-'70. Iconic record. The lead singer sang in English phonetically.
Every garage band back in the day did this at school dances.
This group should be better known. They recorded TONS of great, original songs. Too bad this is the only one most people know...
Some great psych songs.
Daemon Lover is their most psychedelic hit. Definitely worth a listen! Very late 60’s vibe.
One of the greatest one hit wonders ever.
This came out in 1969, Bananarama redid it in the 80s. Shocking Blue was a Dutch group, and broke up in 1974.
A classic iconic song heard everywhere back in the day. Brings to mind another favorite from around that time, "Sweet City Woman" by The Stampeders.
Absolutely gotta check out Send Me A Postcard!
For decades I though that was a male singer. My brother bought the 45rpm single around 1969 or 1970.
Bananarama covered it as another hit. I Elled My A Off when a Filipino dude I knew pronounced his Vs like Ps and sang this at karaoke!
The Bananrama version was a number one hit. You may want to check it out as well. Much higher energy.
Timeless.
Loved this 1970-ish hit.
BANGER AGAIN.............TKS
Plus the lead singer was a cutie!!
Colin James Voodoo Thing 1988
ai grew up & this was on the radio constantly.......but until I first saw the video about a year ago, I thought it was claws a dude singing it.
I'm your Venus, I'm your faller a' joy messiah.
This band 8s from the Netherlands and the singer didn't speak English . She memorized this song .
I think this song is from the 60s. It’s the only Shocking Blue song I’ve ever heard.
❤❤❤
Mariska knew NOT ONE "lick" of english. She sang the song lyrics EXACTLY as written and THEY WERE WRITTEN INCORRECTLY! Hence the word "godness" instead of godess. . . . . in the very first line.
There's more Shocking Blue on TH-cam and it's easy to find.
Not seen you react to any Status Quo songs yet, please check Roadhouse Medley and Anniversary Waltz part one and two
Classic pop song! However, after a few drinks it’s title would change from Venus to p___s!
You should check out Pink cadillac by Bruce Springsteen.
Hi Shawn! Thank you for this fantastic reaction! Can you please react to Never marry a railroad man from the same group! Thanks. Pe@ce and Blessings from Australia.
Please react to Patricia Paay- Who's That Lady With My Man
Commercial for ladies shavers.
Pretty sure English was her 2nd language. Wrap your head around that.
Anybody else see a chimpanzee in the background, in a cage?…lol Maybe I’m trippin’…:) Great song though, brought back memories
Bannarama cover is fire!!
It's a ladies razor commercial
