Can you go wrong with Sir Elton John? I was listening to some of my favorite tracks earlier today. “Madman Across the Water” and “Tiny Dancer” were blasting in my AirPods. Thanks for keeping things going. With all the sadness and problems in the world, you guys make us smile every day.
The entire "leather jackets" album is disappointing. The entire album, every song is an utter disaster. So yes, technically, you can go wrong with Elton John. in his defense Elton himself admits he was stoned out of his gourd on cocaine while recording it... but still
Memories! When I was 14 in 1972, my sister gave me "Honky Chateau" for Christmas. My whole family loved the album, and we played it over and over all day long. My dad loved "Rocket Man" and I loved "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters." As kids, we had a $5 limit on gifts so the album couldn't have cost very much, but what a great gift! I'm calling my sister tomorrow and thanking her...again.
This is a good example of a song that wouldn't get made today. Producer: You want to drop the vocals out for two verses and just have tinkling piano? No, that's not the formula". The bigger acts had so much creative control in the 70's.
Funeral for a friend/Love lies bleeding is my favorite but I love all of him this song was one of the first I ever heard by him many many many years ago still love it crocodile rock was the first record I ever had I think I was about 7 or 8 what an incredible talent
I see your Mad Man Across the Water and Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding and I'll raise you a Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy and a Tower of Babel. JAY, get it done! lol
Another surprising side of Elton is his incredible cover of the Beatles "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" with John Lennon singing backups. It was another #1 smash for Sir Elton.
Agreed, although it's not ragtime, it's just good old fashioned honky tonk piano (hence the title). Ragtime and honky tonk are related, but not the same. Ragtime is about melody - think Scott Joplin (The Entertainer) while honky tonk is about rhythm - think stride players like early Ray Charles, or The Beatles 'Rocky Raccoon'. Both are highly syncopated, hence the similarity. Cool part here is they added some funky horns, creating a new hybrid sound - honky funk maybe? lol
@@p3-jm4im Interesting, I didn't understand the distinctions between ragtime and honky tonk, I just know I like that bouncy, lively style of piano playing. I really love syncopation in music, it's so dynamic. And yes, the horns add so much. Thanks for the explanation.
This the album that gave us Rocket Man. The title "Honky Chateau" stems from the fact the album was recorded in an actual French chateau that Elton rented and moved the band into until the album was in the can. Great Elton album that captures him at the height of his powers.
This is early Elton John. Released in January 1972. I’ve seen Elton John in concert at least 5 times. You guys mentioned Billy Joel. Probably some of the greatest concert experiences I’ve ever had are the two times I saw Elton and Billy in concert together. They would start the concert on stage together, then they each played an individual set, then they finished the concert on stage together again. The first time I saw them during Elton’s set he did two Billy songs, then during Billy’s set he did two Elton songs. It was so cool.
Thanks to you two for the great reaction to some funky EJ! You absolutely must do "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding"! It is quite a departure from anything else he has done, in the very best way. "Madman Across the Water" is another great one to get to!!
Remember Elton had the starring role in the rock-opera "Tommy" written by The Who. It might work on the movie channel, but either way, I think you'd like it.
Still haven't listened to Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. That will blow you away 😀 Another one is Madman Across The Water. A few more -- Island Girl, Grow Some Funk of Your Own and his cover of Pinball Wizard and Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds -- both of which blows the originals to smithereens.
"Honky Cat" is the first track on the Honky Chateau album. The honky chateau was a chateau in France where this album was recorded. I think it was 1972. This is the album that has "Rocket Man" on it.
There will never be another Elton. Generational talent. Absolutely ruled the 70”s air waves. There will never be another decade like the 70”s. Thanks Elton for the memories your the man !
It's such a fantastic arrangement. Although this time through anyway, I literally could not take my mind off of the bass guitar line. That was just percolating like crazy. So funky.
This is the Elton John we grew up with. Churning out album after album, brimming with imagination and creativity, never repeating himself. This is one of the best rabbit holes to get lost in. 😊
I have been lucky enough to see Sir Elton John and Billy Joel in concert together twice. Once in OKC and once in Tulsa. Best concert I've ever been to, hands down, and I've been to a lot. It was a solid 3+ hours of music, two pianos, strings, percussion, horns, everything. Love.
Great song and great reaction. His early albums are phenomenal. Some songs that I don't think you have done yet include: Take Me To The Pilot, Burn Down The Mission, Country Comfort, Where To Now St. Peter?, Madman Across The Water, Rotten Peaches, Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, I've Seen That Movie Too, Harmony and The Bitch Is Back. Enjoy!
One of my all time fav Elton John songs. It is a feel good, fun, sing along as well as get up and move to song. Great vocals, great piano and keyboard riffs, flashes of horns. This is a great song. I love the syncopated lyrics. Very jazzy and bluesy. 1970s gave us a lot of great and creative music.
I love this song, as I do all his songs. Sir Elton John has sold over 300 million records, making him one of the best-selling musicians internationally. During the 1970s, Elton John released 12 studio albums (excluding compilations, soundtracks, etc), six of which made it to number 1 in the Billboard 200 Album chart. Six singles made it to number 1 in the US Top 40 between 1970 and 1979. During the 1970s, Elton John was nominated for a total of 9 Grammy Awards but sadly never won during this period. In 1994, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 1998 became Sir Elton John after being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

I'm not sure what songs you know by Elton John but if you haven't checked out these songs you should, one is off of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road called "All the Young Girls Love Alice", another is a duet that he did with Kiki Dee called "Don't Go Breaking My Heart".
1972! Elton's music got me through junior high. I can still sing all of these lyrics...but don't remember how to divide fractions without a calculator. His 1st 10 albums, from "Empty Sky" through "Caribou", were solid listening. "Honky Chateau" was among the top 3 best, to me. After those, "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" and "Rock of the Westies" (both 1975) had some great tracks, not all hit-worthy imo. I have seen these suggested by others and will add my urging for you to react to them next... ☆"Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" (a masterpeice from his "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album!) ☆"Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy" (title track from that album) ☆"Amoreena" ...my favorite song of his ever, from the album, "Tumbleweed Connection" - 1970. I AM HERE FOR THIS! YES! Jay and Amber, most excellent reaction! I am so glad you enjoyed this song, as soon as I saw the thumbnail and title, I know Jay was going to love the piano in this one! First time I heard this song was in the early 1970s when we first purchased his Greatest Hits album when it came out. That was our first Elton John album when we were kids. Just Elton in a white suit and hat, white framed glasses, sitting by a black piano. It is a beautiful cover for that album I think! The horns, the horns, the horns! Love them horns in this song, his piano playing is exceptionally lively and fun to listen to in this song! I'm going to watch this reaction again! ☮ and 💕
I remember watching a documentary years ago where it was said that Elton would play the piano so hard and passionately that his fingers would bleed. Phenomenal pianist! ❤
This one is always the song I point to when I want to remind everyone that it started as a COLD LYRIC - no music - by Bernie Taupin. Right away, you can see what an amazing lyricist Taupin is. This ain't poetry - this is rock-core songwriting! And THEN - look at what music Elton John BROUGHT to that COLD LYRIC!!!!!! Can you imagine being Taupin the first time he heard what John did with it?!?
Jay and Amber - I'm glad you picked another Elton song; but again - I IMPLORE you to listen and react to two Elton ABSOLUTE CLASSICS: 'Ticking" and "Indian Sunset". Jay, you said you loved the piano on Honky Cat. My friend, you haven't heard Elton on the piano until you hear "Ticking". It's a haunting 'tell-a-story' masterpiece (so please have the lyrics when you review) on which Elton's piano is simply OTHER-FRICKING WORLDLY..........And Indian Sunset from the 1971 Madman Across The Water album - is an orchestral MASTERPIECE also telling a story about the plight of an Indian Tribe. He starts out acapella and finishes with a stirring crescendo. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider these 2 the next time you review Elton. Thanks and I love your channel...
My happiest memory about this incredible song is taking my 2-year-old son for a car ride, popping Honky Chateau into the CD player, and my son instantly bopping along to this song in his car seat! :)
As a drummer of over 50 years I love what the drummer does especially his bas drum at the end of the song. The entire is so syncopated - look up that word to get the full feeling of what I am saying - love this tune!!! B. Gardner

Elton John's Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding would be a great song for reaction
A friend on mine is in the business of building recording studios and a few years ago was contracted to do some work on the studio in France where this album was recorded. She is a huge fan of Elton and a piano player herself and was thrilled to be able to play the same honky tonk piano that Elton plays here!
Elton has been in the business for at least 50 years. I'm sure he has many other songs in his catalog that would surprise you. He changed his sound quite often. I personally loved his earlier stuff. 70 -76.
A number of people have recommended Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, and I'm enthusiastically adding my vote! My absolute favorite version of that stunning song is the performance from 1972, Live at the Royal Festival Hall in the UK. (Amber, you'll get some major sparkle....)
This was the first album to feature his past touring band, Nigel Olsen on drums and Dee Murray on bass, into the studio. ( they played only on one track on Madman, the prior album ). It’s the first to fully feature guitarist Dave Johnstone. All three were backing vocalists and added to the Elton sound. It amazingly was his first #1 record in the U.S. This also has one of my very favorite songs…Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters. It’s simply one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard from anyone.
You've done a lot of Elton songs... he has so many hits. One I love by him is a medley... "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" Funeral is instrumental... I'd almost call it an intro to Love Lies Bleeding but it is nearly 5:30 min by itself. Together they are just over 11 min. Beautiful songs. Elton said he was trying to create music he'd like to have played at his funeral.
I don't usually prefer instrumentals, but Funeral for a Friend is a big exception. It's so wonderful it makes me sad thinking that RSR would skip over it. 11 minutes total is a nothing-burger in the large scheme of music time 😊
Are you aware he rearranged "Candle in the Wind" and entitled that arrangement "Candle in the Wind 1997" that he performed at Princess Diana's funeral service? I HIGHLY recommend finding that one, it's brilliant! The two were very close friends but had a falling out over a table book.. She became John's "English Rose"!
70's Elton is some of the best music ever made! Honestly, each album was a bit different but always excellent! Lifelong fan here... trust me, I know a lot of hidden gems. Try "Madman Across the Water " for his moodiest song ever! And his best vocal performance! Also try "Talking Old Soldier" for a solo Elton on piano and vocals! GREAT stuff! For a rock gem... try "Grey Seal"... it's amazing! Reggae? Try "Jamaica Jerk-Off"... it's infectious!
I've been an Elton John fan since 1974. I was 14. My favorite Elton John music is 1981 and back....i loved his voice the best in those years. "Blues For Baby and Me" is a favorite song of mine of the many in those great EJ music years. 😊❤
I've been an EJ fan since the 70s. But he really earned my respect when he offered all of his support and resources to bring Leon Russell back from obscurity. An Okie like the Rob Squad! I loved, loved, loved Leon. I was so happy that I was able to see him in concert on his last birthday. What a great musician. I think I'll go listen to Magic Mirror for the 10K th time.
There are some deep cuts from Elton John that are soooo good that you guys should listen to: Here’s to the Last Time, Come Down in Time, High Flying Bird, these songs were not released(at least not in the US), but they are phenomenal, love your channel ❤
I remember when this song came out. Classic! After all these years I haven’t forgotten any of the lyrics, that’s how how this man is. It’s burned in your brain.❤
I just spent a lot of time responding to your comment (I agree with you) and right at the end before hitting SEND it went to an ad and deleted my complete reply. It's a shame that TH-cam has become as terrible as it has. I'm using it only a fraction of what I used to. A shame
I saw him in concert back in 97 and it was just him and his piano. Let me tell you I love his music. But I was blown away the man is truly the Michael Jordan or piano playing
This is an amazing song with the way he uses the piano timing throughout. If this amazes you, go even earlier in his career. Try Elton's only county hit. " Country Comfort"! Truly shows Elton can do any type of music!
incredible talent from Elton John. heard this song when I was about 11 years old and it stood way out from all the other stuff on the radio...also Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics to this song. He's the country boy from Lincolnshire. Elton is from the suburbs of London, England from the town of Pinner.
You know I had AI had a breakdown. Oh, no, Elton Johnson, the butcher's back. I did it, i'd be a good song for modern women. Hey I don't know i'm a hay that once for the modern royman out there😅😊😅😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😅😊😅😅😊😊
That jam session at the end is a stark reminder that music like this just isn't made anymore!! I've always LOVED this tune!! It's one of my favorites by Sir Elton John!! Amber and J, your next song by him should be another one of my favorites: *Empty Garden - Hey Hey Johnny* @RobSquadReactions
You guys have only scratched the surface with Elton. You definitely need to check out the single from the album Madman Across the Water... hauntingly beautiful and powerful. It's a completely different vibe from Honky Cat. Remember too guys that Bernie Taupin wrote the amazing lyrics which Elton then set to music. I cannot imagine Elton ever wanting to be a cowboy, or work on a farm. He is more of the city type where Bernie is more of the country type but you believe every word Elton is singing. Love the reactions, as usual. Another tune that you should definitely hit from Honky Chateau is Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters. It is beautiful as well.
Great song! Great reaction! I ser so many song suggestions in the comments below. Id love for you to hear them all. Truth is if you did one song a week you would still need years to get through them. Thats my suggestion, one a week for years! I have suggested one in particular several times, and im going to do it again. EMPTY GARDEN is a song he made in memory of John Lennon, and it gets me everytime i hear it. You love Elton and you love John. Where can you go wrong?
Bernie's lyrics reference New Orleans and Elton musically invokes the greasy, dirty New Orleans shuffle obviously inspired by Dr. John/Leon Russel . I LOVE it!
This is one of EJ's best. The more you listen to it the more it grows on you. You hear something new almost every time. Always lovee the trombones myself...

☮ and 💕
I had that album too
70’s Elton is the “Best” 🔥❤️
And please listen to the ALBUM CUTS of each of these, not the live. Thank you..
This is the first song I remember hearing by Elton John back in 1972. For many years, I also used "Honkey Cat" for my CB handle. 😁
My happiest memory about this incredible song is taking my 2-year-old son for a car ride, popping Honky Chateau into the CD player, and my son instantly bopping along to this song in his car seat! :)
Great Song
Check out the song Philadelphia Freedom. That's was my first Elton John song .After that I was hooked
Yup, probably my favourite song of his amonst an armful.
Two epic departures from Sir Elton: "Texas Love Song" and "Ticking". Deep cuts but really shows his incredible range. Please consider!!!!!
A number of people have recommended Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, and I'm enthusiastically adding my vote!
My absolute favorite version of that stunning song is the performance from 1972, Live at the Royal Festival Hall in the UK. (Amber, you'll get some major sparkle....)
We forgot how cool this song was! We just love that swingin' sound. And the piano! Awesome!
Honky Chateau is the title of Elton John's 1972 album which was his first US # 1 album. Honky Cat is the opening track on the album.
A couple of my Elton John sings: "Border Song" & "Take Me To The Pilot"
Thanks for reacting to my favourite (and underrated) Elton John song. The honky-tonk piano mixed with the horns is totally awesome to me.
Go Elton.
Sir Elton John's composition "Pinball Wizard" was the entire movie entitled "Tommy". Great film!
Love old Elton music! Hard for me to not give the great Bernie Taupin his due….. he writes the words, Elton makes it magic!
I've been an Elton John fan since 1974. I was 14. My favorite Elton John music is 1981 and back....i loved his voice the best in those years. "Blues For Baby and Me" is a favorite song of mine of the many in those great EJ music years. 😊❤
Yes,totally agree.Young Elton was the best Elton.
You're ready for the next level of Elton John. Listen to "Have Mercy On The Criminal" or "Madman Across the Water".
Love this funky old elton John diddy✌️🔥🙂🙂
The early live album titled 11-17-70 is still my favorite. When hardly any of us knew who he was. We learned quickly! Thanks for the reaction.
It was 17/11/70 in the UK!
This is my favorite Elton John era.
“Hey hey Johnny” written about the death of John Lennon is still my favorite of all his songs… you guys would love it!
Isn't the title of the song actually "Empty Garden"?
There are some deep cuts from Elton John that are soooo good that you guys should listen to: Here’s to the Last Time, Come Down in Time, High Flying Bird, these songs were not released(at least not in the US), but they are phenomenal, love your channel ❤
I remember when this song came out. Classic! After all these years I haven’t forgotten any of the lyrics, that’s how how this man is. It’s burned in your brain.❤
A deep track from the Dont Shoot Me Album. Blues for Baby and Me. So beautiful. Paul Buckmaster did all the orchestration for Elton John
I just spent a lot of time responding to your comment (I agree with you) and right at the end before hitting SEND it went to an ad and deleted my complete reply. It's a shame that TH-cam has become as terrible as it has. I'm using it only a fraction of what I used to. A shame
You can never have Sir Elton’s sound figured out! 😆. There is no end to the musical talents of this musical genius. ❤️
I've seen him multiple times in concert. One show he got under the piano and played it backwards/upside down on this song. He's just incredible.
They Butch Butch's back, butch is back, that's the song. It's out. There's no you, it's AI this is TH-cam. I don't want to go to jail
@@allendixon7700 huh?
You know I had AI had a breakdown. Oh, no, Elton Johnson, the butcher's back. I did it, i'd be a good song for modern women. Hey I don't know i'm a hay that once for the modern royman out there😅😊😅😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😅😊😅😅😊😊
Are you never know could be somebody's old lady
Let's not forget back in those days Elton John had one of the best backing bands in the business.
That jam session at the end is a stark reminder that music like this just isn't made anymore!! I've always LOVED this tune!! It's one of my favorites by Sir Elton John!! Amber and J, your next song by him should be another one of my favorites: *Empty Garden - Hey Hey Johnny*
@RobSquadReactions
AND THAT'S WHY I'VE SAID THAT THIS WAS A GREAT PIANO BANGERRRR 😊AND HE HAD MANYYYYY OF THOSE THROUGHOUT THE DECADES 👍😊
I always thought of this song as Elton's tribute to Dr. John, a New Orleans piano legend.
This is the kind of song that you don't want to end.
