    I appreciate the 'small bites' school of instruction since I am a technology dunderhead. Thanks a lot. I am amazed at the diversity you offer in personal recording equipment---TEAC has always offered a nice, affordable line of audio equipment. In my youth, TEAC reel-to-reels were, and still are, the workhorse of the industry.

      Never mind! I found out that I was using a USB cable that only supported power, and didn’t support data transfer. You have to sort through these cables and test them all because like USB-C cables, some are power-only and others transmit power AND data. My issue was that the cables I was trying were all ‘power only’ cables. I wish this Tascam just came with a dedicated data cable of its own.

      MS is Mid/Side microphone, which is left/center/right input that is either recorded raw (MS DECODE OFF) or is decoded to stereo tracks at the time of recording (MS DECODE ON). The advantage of turning off the decode setting gives you flexibility to combine the tracks in post, tuning them to your liking.

    Great video. Thank you. I bought the DR-40X and very rarely use it. The reason to buy it was to spread the built-in mics, put it on a table in the centre of my music room, and face it towards my hifi speakers. This way, I assume it will record audio the way my speakers actually sound in person. I could take a line level out of my hifi system and directly plug it into the DR-40X but that would just give me a hi-res audio file on the SD card, right?. In order to share files with friends and family with music the way I hear it in my room, what best way would you suggest? I have 4 different pairs of speakers, and I want to share how they all differently sound while playing the same music from the same source. Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    • @TASCAMUSA
      @TASCAMUSA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, Jimmy! There are no videos on that topic, but we can help you with that information.
      MIC will be pretty much and microphone you're using that is connected by a three-pin XLR cable. On some occasions, you may find yourself using a condenser microphone which requires power to operate; this is when you'd want to use the Mic + Phantom (phantom power delivers a +48V current to power a condenser mic. Line will be used for anything other than a microphone. Line and mic differ in the loudness of the signal that is delivered to the recorder. By choosing "Line", you making the decision for the unit to adjust to the signal coming in (usually over 1/4" inputs on the bottom of the DR-40X).
      Hopefully this helps out!

    I am confused on the idea of the devices 4 channels and mixing down tracks. Back in the day, I had a 4 channel, high-speed, cassette Tascam recorder. I could record to channels and mix down, which allowed me to feature many instruments and vocals on a song. I'm not sure how that works on this recorder. I wish there was a video that showed how to create tracks and mix down to produce a song. I'm just planning to do demos of songs I'm writing for our band. Can you point me to a video tutorial for that. So far, I played and sang a song through my mini PA and recorded that. I then did the "overdub" thing and added a piano - the first take, the piano was too loud, so I deleted that one, turned down the electric piano and redid the take. I'm just wondering if there's a better way to do this. And, do I add tracks by continuing to overdub on the last track I made?

    • @TASCAMUSA
      @TASCAMUSA  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 4 channel recording refers to recording the internal microphones and the external inputs all at once. You might want to look into our portastudios like the DP-006 and DP-008EX which are more for creating songs with multiple tracks and mixing down

    • @TASCAMUSA
      @TASCAMUSA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello! A video for this function is currently not available, but we'd be more than happy to give you the run down of the MS Decode function on here.
      So, if you've recorded with mid-side mic techniques or have imported files that were recorded using that technique, you'll want to make sure those channels are stereo linked within the Manual App.
      Once you've turned the MS Decode function ON from the I/O settings screen, you'll need to select which stereo channel pair you'll be using this feature with.
      After that's been completed, navigate back to your Manual App's MIXER screen. The stereo channel selection will now have the pan function replaced with the MS Decode function. Slide this the same way you would with a pan, but now controls the amount of middle mic to side mic ratio. At 0, the audio is completely mid and more side is introduced as the value is increased.
      We hope this helps!

      Hello Damon! After recording for extended periods of time the files will break up like that due to formatting restrictions. You'll run into this very issue on every product that records to an SD card.
      Are you importing those files into any software on a computer? If so, you can add them all to the same channels/tracks within the software without missing a beat between takes - no pops, glitches, or dropouts.

      @@damonwhite9521 yes, using programs such as Rekordbox or Quicktime won't result in the same file separations because of the format of the media.
      The issue you ran into with getting the clips lined up is interesting because the DR-40X doesn't stop or pause recording while writing files.
      It could be that "Auto Record" is enabled, which can definitely cause those particular issues. Go to the MENU, then REC SETTING, and scroll down until you see . @TASCAMUSA  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@damonwhite9521 Page 36 Item 10 of the manual is referring to the AUTO RECORD feature I mentioned earlier. For music recording, I'd definitely recommend turning that off - it's great for dictation and taking audio notes, but not so much for music.
      Directly beneath the meters where you can see the audio signal coming in there's a scale that goes from -50 (to the left) up to 0 (on the right) - this is a decibel meter. Also, you should be able to see a decibel readout at the bottom right of the screen. With that, if the DR-40X is not record armed it will read --dB and then will fill in when the unit is armed. This will give you a good baseline reading for what dB levels you're hitting when it's silent, and what the levels coming into it are staying around.

    Hey! I bought the DR-40X back in 2019 and it was working perfect with no problems. I was able to take it everywhere and use it without any worries or issues. About a year ago all of a sudden it started to pick up really bad digital interferences that ruined many of my recordings. Now in my house, outside, pretty much everywhere I'm getting this interference. I turned off cell phones and wifi in the area and that doesn't help at all. I even tried to cover it with tinfoil which reduced some noise but not all. What else can I do? I tried contacting Tascam on their website a number of times with NO response! I'm pretty disappointed as I initially loved using it when I first got it.

    Hello, does anyone know: is it possible to, while listening to a recorded file, also hear the (line)input? (I want to overdub layers of synthesizers via line in, but want to be able to play the first line, and "practise" the second line on top of it without recording. When I am happy with the second line, I will overdub record)

    • @mikemik8597
      @mikemik8597 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I know that!
      When you are in overdub mode, you should see in the top left of your screen a message saying "PRESS x/x INPUT" where x/x is either 1/2 or 3/4 according to what input you have selected. By pressing the corresponding button (1/2 SOLO or 3/4 SOLO) you enable or disable the monitoring. This works either if your playback track is paused, playing or if you are recording. Now you can also use the "MIXER" button to mix your monitoring levels.
