    This is probably the most informative video I saw on the Tascam DR-40 I've seen on TH-cam. Not only did you review the Tascam DR-40, you also Showed it with other mics connected to it. Thumbs up man! And id give it 4 more if I could!

    That setup with the green screen is actually genius. I think I'm gonna steal it :)

    This is one of the best product tests for any product I've ever seen. I like how you used the green screen to show us exactly what was happening on the recorder. I love the fact you showed a number of external microphone applications so if someone was looking for a specific type of mic then they can find it. This made my purchase way ever. Thank you good sir. Awesome video.

    Hi from the UK. I was looking through reviews of this unit to accompany DSLR filming and it's the coolest demonstration. You can see everything and hear it in action so thanks!

    Thanks for the comment and for the kind words. As shown in the video, the safety track is a track recorded at a lower volume. It's called a safety track because it allows you to record "hotter" on your normal track, yet still have a fall back if that track gets overmodulated with unexpected loud sounds. Hope that helps.

    I bought my Tascam D40 and tried recording with less knowledge with the device,however this is a friendly user and so far i am pretty much satisfied with the result of the audio output.,i highly recommend this product....

    Guy, Thank You! I just bought the DR-22WL but am returning for the DR-40 based on this great presentation. I wanted XLR and appreciate the detail you spent on production to show the various mic samples. Green screen nice!

    I wasn't expecting very much due to the 80's style music, the bad green screen (which turned out to be quite helpful)
    But the test was very informative.
    I also have a DR40 and I've noticed some heavy noise issues with the internal mics (at least through my headphones),
    so I was curious to see - no, to HEAR - what was going on with external mics.
    This video definetely shed some light on the topic

  • @dvestore

    Thanks for asking. Yes, you can record in 4CH mode to record the onboard mics + XLR inputs. You can even set a delay in milliseconds so they match up.

    @hey86x Thanks! One of the new features in the Tascam DR-40 is called "Peak Reduction" which helps set the levels for you - it will automatically bring the levels down should things get loud - the only drawback is that it may not be fast enough to catch rapid rises, so the Dual mode is an excellent "Safety track".

  • @dvestore
    @dvestore  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @hotboyme Thanks for your comment, the mode we recorded in is 16 Bit 48k wav. You have the option of going up to 24 Bit 96k. You can also record MP3 compressed files at 32kbps, 64kbps 96, 128,192,256,320 as well as BWF 16bit and 24 bit.

  • @JoshuaBeeLoved

    Glad to have helped. Your best bet would be to get a mixer as you hear in the video above. 2nd best would be to find a field recorder with good pre-amps. Oade brothers even modifies recorders and puts in higher quality components - see their site. Other recorders to look at are: Tascam DR 680, Edirol R-44 and Marantz PMD-660. Also Sony PCM-M10 with a digital in from the Sound Devices MixPre-D is a great low noise combo.

  • @dvestore
    @dvestore  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @elevn7 Hi Jack! Thanks for watching. Yes, absolutely. Although I did not demo the internal mics, they sound quite good when recorded to the SD card. There is a reverb effect. I like that I can record the two XLR's and still record using the on-board mics. For under $200, I think we're going to see a lot of these out in the field. I just hope that are serious save up for a mixer too to get the best results.

  • @dvestore
    @dvestore  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @tividor Yes, you can record to the Internal mics as well as the XLR inputs at the same time. Simply change the REC MODE to 4 channel. It's 4 unique tracks inside 2 separate, Two Track files.

    Yeah, it's really just intended for musician's to make home recordings on. I bought it to record sound for DSLR movies, as I won't need clips nearly as long as where the drift begins (which is around 5 to 6 minutes when syncing with 23.97fps video.) You could speed/slow it down by .1% (depending on if its behind or ahead), but there are also programs that will fix the timecode issues for you, such as PluralEyes. In FCP, you could also edit the XML file and project setting for a better sync.

  • @dvestore
    @dvestore  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The safety track was chosen in post production as anything that was clipped was unusable. That's the beauty of the safety track.

    @4009richard Just a tip that will save you lots of battery life when shooting in the field with condensers.. Get condenser mics with battery power like the shotgun NTG-series from RÖDE. One extra battery will in that way usually bring almost a day more in battery life.

  • @dvestore
    @dvestore  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for you comment. It sound like you have the correct setting for EXT MIC and EXT IN. Does your mic require 48V Phantom Power? The Tascam should ask you if you want to turn it on when you choose EXT MIC. If it does require phantom power, and it is on, do you have another XLR cable to test with? It could also be a bad cable. Please let us know if you get it figured out or if you have any other questions.

    It is surprising how the floor noise is higher with the Mackie preamps than with the Tascam's internal preamps. Isn't that surprising?

    @christianhermida Zoom has an inexpensive 1/4-20 to cold shoe for around $20 check it out at dvestore - it's called the HS-1. I personally prefer the Manfrotto 492 LCD so I can articulate the unit and watch the levels/battery status/recording status those are about $49 though.

    @huggeek The Dual recording with the safety track is the biggest benefit over the H4n. I would spend the money saved on a mixer - that way you can really hear where your $100 went :)

    I HOOKED MY TASCAM 40 TO THE OUTPUT OF A SOUND BOARD USING THE XLR CABLES TO RECORD LIVE MUSIC BUT I STILL GOT THE XY MICS PIKING UP SOUND FROM PEOPLE TALKING AND EVEN WHEN I TAP THEM A BIT. I CAN HEAR THE TAPPING ON THE RECORDING. WHAT I'M DOING WRONG ISN'T THE SOUND SUPPOSE TO RECORD FROM THE BOARD ONLY, WHEN YOU HOOK UP THE XLR?

    can i take audio from my earphone out straight into my camera ?
    will the audio be different from the audio being recorded onto the sd card in the tascam dr-40?

  • @dvestore
    @dvestore  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks! Sure, you can dl the pdf manual and take a look at pg 47-48 at tascam.com/content/downloads/products/706/e_dr-40_om_va.pdf
    As long as you have switched the input to line level and the the mixer is outputting normal levels, you should get a perfectly recorded track. Of course you want to test first and watch the VU meters or monitor with headphones. Cheers!

    Hi m8, ive just bought one of these recorders as to me the build quality and features beats any other at this price range. Is that a mic stand your dr-40 is on?

  • @dvestore
    @dvestore  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @thenetfilmmaker That would be a good test. I'm not a huge fan of the AT875r, but the price is amazing. That would make a good pair. I'll have to get one and test it out, because yes, the AT875r is "hotter" than the NTG-1. You can listen to the two in another vid we uploaded th-cam.com/video/PwHc7hWGwHc/w-d-xo.html

  • @thenetfilmmaker
    @thenetfilmmaker 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dvestore Thanks, I love the rode mics, but the ntg-1,2, really need a preamp/ mixer with these music oriented recorders. The ntg3 would be ideal but out of this price point. The at875 setup has potential of being a acceptable audio solution south of $500. I really appreciate the response. By the way, the link you posted isn't working.

    Great review! I just got my DR40 and haven't played with it yet. One thing, in your video you had the same mic used directly, and then used thru an external preamp, but the gain on the preamp was about 10db less than the first time, so I couldn't judge the preamp noise. My question is do you think the preamp noise of the dr40 is similar to outboard mixers, or better, or worse? I know it would depend on the mixer, but I just want your opinions on what you found with your own equipment. THKS!

    Guy, Thanks for the great review. I'm looking for a solution to a 'buzz' problem on my Sony CX700 and think that a PCM recorder is the way to go. If possible, I want to avoid adding the sound in post, so (1) am considering connecting my Rode SVM via Y cable L/R ext mic inputs on the DR-40 and (2) from the headphone out to the mic input on the handycam. Obviously I'll have a useable recording on the DR-40, but will it go to the SONY? Interestingly, iRig mic to iPhone 4 using a m2m plug does work.

    Amazing video Guy, thanks for this. I am hesitating between the Zoom H2N and the Tascam DR-40. I like the multiple mike configurations of the Zoom H2N but I somehow feel that the DR-40 is a more professional unit. I want to try making outdoor videos of myself playing the guitar and singing, using the internal mikes and maybe plugging in my acoustic to the line input. The mid-side mode of the Zoom seems nice for this purpose but the connectors are better suited on the Tascam. What do you think?

    That is, is it better to have the mic powered off the phantom power of the Tascam (NTG-1), or is it better to power the mic from its own battery (NTG-2)?
    Which will give a better signal/less noise/hum? Or would there be no difference? Thanks
