    Small correction: In the comparison, I meant to write and say Zoom H5 and not F5.
    And one more thing I want to point out: I verified the preamp noise of the DR-40X with two separate devices to eliminate the chance of testing a defective recorder.

      Looks like they have changed only screen light from orange to blue in the DR40-X compare to previous DR40-V2. Can tell you though, that this device is very sturdy (it has metal reinforcements inside in right places), even it looks "cheap".

      Hello Julian, and thank you for the great review. I'm planning to buy a cheap (under 200 Euro) recorder for ambient sound (so an A/B configuration would be preferable while the majority of them are X/Y and locked in place) and I was thinking to buy this one. However after watching your review I realized the background noise is too loud. Would you be nice to recommend me a good one? Low noise, enough fidelity. Thank you.

    I've been using the DR-40 for +4 years. It's my No.1 choice for demoing and being creative, thanks to the great overdub / mix mode. The mics are not too brilliant or harsh, they have this slight warm touch*.
    From 2012 - 2015 I "worked" mostly with the DR-05, while also trying out the Boss BR-80 and ZOOM's multitrackers R8, R16 & R24 (I still use the R8 for demos, as audio interface & DAW controller).
    My first choice to grab was and still is the Tascam. I like the DR-40 a lot, but yet it's lights & shadows.I was looking forward to this upgrade, but there is rarely something new.
    What's NEW:
    - a slightly revised menu (EQ, Speaker & Level are now in a seperate ""E/A" folder)
    - Dictation Mode (well...)
    - USB Audio Interface
    - 16h battery running time instead of 17h (based on 4 years of using eneloops: 8h seems realistic)
    - That's it
    Still NOT CHANGED:
    - instead of the "play" button, the "Enter/Mark" button is in the middle
    - USB port not protected like the SD slot
    - display totally overloaded
    - display has still 1990's Game Boy graphics
    - I prefer a dial for adjusting the volume (like a good old Walkman)
    - Power Supply Status has only 3 bars. That's far too vague. 5 bars would be useful, an additional display in percent would be awesome
    - still not possible to change the brightness of the display, only contrast. That's ridiculous! Guys, every simple China-imported mp3 player has this function!
    - still not possible to disable the annoying "Change Mic directions?" popup in the system settings when adjusting the mic
    - NO accessories! Not even optional! No case, no sleeve, no bag - nothing! 10 years ago I bought a cheap Transcend mp3 player for like 40 EUR. It came with a silicon protection case, lanyard, USB cable, line cable, earbuds, 2 display protection sheets, software CD and a case. And you could even adjust the display brightness! 40 EUR! Shame on you, Tascam!
    Conclusion:
    If you need a great, simple recorder with brilliant mics for demoing: go fo the Tascam DR-05 V2.
    If you need additional features, like XLR, full 2-track recording, mixer and you can pass on Audio Interface: go for Tascam DR-40 V2.
    If you need all this AND an Audio Interface, you should rather check the ZOOM H4n Pro. It's in the same price range but it also has a Guitar Amp Simulation, Zoom G5n based Multi Effects, a Karaoke/Jam function and includes Steinberg Cubase LE & WaveLab LE Download licenses and a protective case
    *I recorded "Einsamer Wanderer (QuickShot Demo)" with the DR-05 (light reverb, intro & outro with Audacity) - check out on my channel if you like

      Great info and thank you for providing it. Though I do have a question that you may be able to provide some clarity to...say I need a decent quality budget priced 4 track digital recorder along the lines of the H4n Pro or H5 functionally speaking, etc but have no need for included microphones. Just portable and somewhat clean preamps XLR, line in etc for field recording samples and creative noodling. Thanks for any insight you can provide - I feel like Im just wading through thick fog at this point. lol

      @einsamerwanderer6641 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theorist5497 , thanks for your kind words.
      You are looking for a (portable) 4-track recorder with XLR and decent preamps, is that right?
      Unfortunately I'm not familiar with recorders less than 8 tracks. Over the years I've been working with all ZOOMs (R8, R16, R24) and the BOSS BR-80. You would not want the ZOOM R16 or R24, they're too big. The BOSS BR-80 might work for you. I remember it was built like a tank and was fun jamming around with this little thing. The downside is it has 1 Mic Line-in only (no XLR) and creating a multitrack recording was very very very complicated and confusing because you had to navigate with a tiny jog wheel.
      I always highly recommend the ZOOM R8. It's not that big as the R16 or R24 and it's definitely the best of the 3 models. You get 3 gears in one: portable recorder, audio interface, DAW controller. It's portable powered by 4 AAs (eneloops recommended), it has 2 Line/XLR combinations, fully adjustable drum machine with 5 different kits, very useful effects (R16 effects are more "Nintendo") and a line-in for a foot switch. This thing is really the heart of my bedroom studio. I use it for creating songs on the couch and as an interface when recording. Since it's also a DAW controller it makes working with (in my case) Cubase a little more comfortable. I bought it for about 220 EUR many years ago. The price is pending from 189 EUR up to 320 EUR. If you don't need it urgently wait for a good offer - I would not pay more than 245 EUR.
      Sorry I can't tell you more about field recorders - though I hope I could help you out a little.
      Cheers

      @@einsamerwanderer6641Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate the input. Yeah, 4 tracks would basically be my mininum, 6 or 8 is probably the sweet spot for it be useful to me for anything other than field recording. I'm not sure how I wasn't aware of the R8 - it looks quite nice. For some reason I was under the impression that the R16 was the lowest model they made - so that may be a really nice solution for me both portability wise and for being able to record my musical projects. Thanks again, you may have just made my day!

    I posted a lengthy comment here earlier pointing out some things about this device. Hopefully it won’t “disappear” or be deleted again. Yes, this item is plastic which reduces its cost and second, it reduces weight as it is a portable device. Yes it has an intolerable built-in background hiss or noise. Nothing you can change via the menu for recording settings will lessen the hiss. Also the device will amplify and record any user handling of device while recording. So it must be positioned on a vibration free surface or a tripod. An accessory kit is available to allow device to be mounted on a typical mic stand. Any outside recording of music or nature sound will require a good wind screen added over mics.
    Lastly, if you have a good audio editor with a noise reduction tool the be advised of this good information. After recording something with this device - open your recording in your audio editor. Select a non-music or non-vocals portion with the hiss/noise section, copy this section. Then open your noise reduction tool. Choose clipboard as the parameter for what to remove. Play your recording to see if hiss is gone. It will be. Then save the hiss-free recording. Yes, it is a workaround but if you want a hiss free recording, this is absolutely necessary with this device. Editing out the noise from a field recording will require you first record somewhere quiet, then save say 5 or 10 seconds worth to a “hiss/noise” audio file first. Make your field recording. Then open both field recording and the hiss/noise recording at the same time in your audio editor. Copy the noise sample. Then select your field recording. Open noise reduction tool. Choose clipboard as the parameter for the noise reduction to use. Apply and check your field recording. It will be artifact free. Save your cleaned up file. Extra steps yes but doable. If you already own this device this procedure will help out. If you find a used one of these in good condition and know how to use an audio editor - consider grabbing it - as other than the irksome hiss/noise issue - it’s an affordable, overall useful and lightweight digital recorder. 😎👍🎥

    3:20 On the inside of the battery compartment door there’s a special place to store the small rubber stand so you don’t end up losing it. Simply press the rubber piece between the 2 plastic stems on the inside of the door and when replaced the rubber stand will never get lost while stored between the batteries 🖐😉

      Also, if you want a snug fit in the tripod socket, just turn it clockwise a few times. All this said, a flip out stand or something that doesn't detach would be better and if done right, far less fiddly.
      It's overall a very good review. My nitpicks is that critiques and praises aren't given with any nod toward prices. Also, I thought the build quality felt fine for a $180 portable four channel recorder. Maybe the feel is different depending on whether you pick it up empty or with batteries. Weight subjectively suggest quality. (I've had cheap phones in the past that had a lead weight in the handset presumably at least partly to weight it down when they went with lighter weight speakers and microphones.)

    Personally, I love the "Record" feature of not going directly into record mode, as you need to set levels before you record anyway, and if you REALLY want to jump right in and record, just press the record button twice quickly. Also, you must remember price point when reviewing these recorders, and Tascam does make more expensive recorders for more exacting professional applications. All in all, in my opinion, this is a very fine recorder for under $200.00.

    I just got a FetHead Phantom today. I can confirm what you start--using the device easily improves the noise situation with my low sensitivity dynamic mics and the Behringer C-3, which is not terribly sensitive compared to other condensers. I am glad I got it and it will improve my experience with the DR40X and my other Tascam recorder. That said I have multiple uses for the FetHead beyond just lowering preamp noise on this device. I think someone starting clean is best to not worry about the FetHead and spend the extra money on a Zoom recorder with better preamps.

      @@shadowsilhouette8499 The Zoom H5 (which is one of the recorders the Tascam is compared to) is not a $700 recorder, indeed it is only a bit more expensive than the Tascam. In fact, it is very important to be aware of the issue Julian points out because if you're recording, say, birdsong in the field, you may have difficulty finding a quiet enough spot to use as a basis for cleaning up the file in post.

    Ive been using the DR40 for years, still works like on day 1, and still has the noise you describe ... you need hotter mics for it (been using it with AudioTechnica). Seems the only added feature is the usage as USB sound device on Mac/PC ... Reason why i bought it back in the day: the Zooms had even worst noise floor (and dont check the crap frequency response) and you could use it with external USB batteries. And ofc around 160€ it was cheap. And even after all these years of "abuse" - even it may feel cheap - never was broken, always worked. Yeah i agree 2020 the DR40II perfomance is not acceptable anymore.

    I have come to trust Julian's scientific approach and objective measurements. That said I get much better quality out of this with a Behringer XM8500 dynamic mic than this review suggests I should. Perhaps my old ears and high frequency hearing loss mean I don't hear noise as much ;)
    My main gripe with the unit is that it's overdubbing and mixing capabilities take some time to sort out. You really need to download the full reference manual from Tascam. In short it isn't a four-track recorder in the more traditional sense as in my old Zoom H4. The process is basically overdub-bounce-overdub-bounce on track at a time. Workable, but different.
    I find the build quality is fine. The little rubber foot has a storage slot in the battery cover. And the Peak Reduction level control is very useful (there are other TH-cam videos that extol the virtues), but I agree that the Auto and Limiter level controls are not.
    Julian doesn't mention that you can power the thing through USB too using computer port, a standard phone charger, or and external battery pack.
    In brief I like it a bit better than Julian does. However, I am keen to invest in a fethead to see it I can improve the noise performance on this and other beloved recorders I have.

      @JulianKrause  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thank for sharing your experience with the DR-40X and the additional input!
      The reason you are much better off with the XM8500 is that it is a more sensitive microphone. Meaning, it delivers a stronger signal in comparision to many other dyanmic microphones and that's why you end up with less noise in your recording.

    • @leswright4108
      @leswright4108 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JulianKrause Thanks. A couple of other things you didn't touch on. I have been experimenting with the thing as a USB interface, and it is surprisingly good, especially when using the built in mics. My DAW is Cakewalk, and I do find it takes a lot of fiddling with the ASIO4All property settings to get down to 128kbps latency (I have a small slow laptop so I don't go lower), but it is possible. As for the internal mics, there seems to be a slight QC issue with mine. In the XY position the Y is turned in a little more than the X. This means the stereo balance seems to slightly favour the R channel when you speak or sing dead on. The average difference on the meters is only a couple of dB, and it should only be audible to obsessive audiophiles, but this device isn't cheap and I would expect this to be in better nick. Also, the sensitivity of the mic to plosives is a huge headache--a pop filter or windcover of fur or foam is an absolute must, especially if you use Peak Reduction, as I do, to manage the the gain. I still really like the thing, but I can't deny that the mic asymmetry, which I suspect does not affect every unit out there, is a tad annoying (even if it is easy to compensate for by positioning).

  • @weeardguy
    @weeardguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes! This is a review. No stupid, annoying background-music, just a normal setup behind you.... I now own a DR-40, which has a an extremely annoying 'chirp' sound when using a phantom powered microphone. (which is basically a 'continuation' of the very bad helicopter sound many experienced back in the days and was eventually fixed by Tascam).
    Just tried to record a voice-over, when the chirp came on AGAIN. I was so fed up that I started looking for something different. As I can read and write with my Tascam DR-40, I thought of the DR-40X. But darn, no. This will not be my choice.
    About the plastic ;) My DR-40 has survived many accidental drops, including drops on the metal guards that protect the internal microphones. It has never failed to amaze me how sturdy this thing is built. The mic-guards aren't even bent!

    Great video. Thank you. I bought the DR-40X and very rarely use it. The reason to buy it was to spread the built-in mics, put it on a table in the centre of my music room, and face it towards my hifi speakers. This way, I assume it will record audio the way my speakers actually sound in person. I could take a line level out of my hifi system and directly plug it into the DR-40X but that would just give me a hi-res audio file on the SD card, right?. In order to share files with friends and family with music the way I hear it in my room, what best way would you suggest? I have 4 different pairs of speakers, and I want to share how they all differently sound while playing the same music from the same source. Your thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Good review. I came to the very same conclusion after testing this device for a couple of weeks. The build in mic-pre-amps - for the use of external mics do have a very high self noise. The build-in mics are good, but very sensitive to wind-noise. Last but not least: the limiter function is useless because it's digital (meaning that it has to lower the total input first - which introduces extra noise). Next to this all, the recorder is very sensitive to RF-noise when using the build-in mics. Using a mobile phone in 1 meter from the unit, or standing in a ~50 meter range of a provider-antenna ruins your recording. That is unacceptable in my opinion.

    Bit late, but you can insert that knob on the back (the one preventing the device from being tilted away from you) by turning it clockwise, as if it was a screw. This allows proper inserting and positioning.
    Mine arrived just today, and I have yet to try it out in depth. I mainly bought it as a hardware recorder, so I can record my dawless jams / performances without always having to turn on the PC. First test recording sounded okay, but I'll have to do some further testing.

    Wow, the noise floor is so bad with the dynamic that I can even hear it through my iPhone speaker. Such strange design choices for a device that has to compete with a Zoom H5 or a MixPre-3 in today’s market. MixPres have analog limiters, Zoom F8n has advanced hybrid digital limiters. Both are highly effective compared to these useless limiters that just drop the recording gain. A very disappointing 2019 product indeed. I was expecting so much more from a new Tascam device. Excellent honest review.

      The Dr40X does not compete with the H5. Julian's comparisons are slightly misleading in this respect. The 40X is $100 cheaper, at least in the US. Which means its a competitor to the H4N - which has the same poor noise performance as the 40 and 40X, etc...

    Its normal for a recorder to require two button presses to start recording.
    it has three modes: Stand by, play, record.
    The audio input normally would not go to the headphones/line out in standby mode. If you are playing back tracks you dont want the microphones to send the audio to the headphones/line out, every time a track ends, while you select the next track to play, or reset the track to play it again.
    the recorder cannot read your mind and know which button you will press next: play or record.
    Tape recorders were made this way for decades.

    I am using Tascam DR40 the original(version 2) and Tascam DR07X and they both behave the same way with internal mics as does DR05(version 2) at recording level 32 there is much more noise than on recording level 33. Not sure if this is due to a filter from 33 or some sot of digital lifting up to 32,but for anyone using this right to a camera it is better to be at 33 and tune down headphone output level a notch than to record at level 32. This is also true for mic in 6.3mm from say a digital keyboard. If recording line in though level goes to 24 only and then it is linear. So better then as high output as possible from digital piano. Another thing to watch out is if you use bass+ EQ and Reverb effekts then line out will distort much earlier than the actually stored file. So if sending right to camera you cannot trust recording level as the added DB is not added on meter,so safest to be not to loud out. I usually like to be at 6 columns when going to high levels around -6db.I add further EQ through the tiny Shure SHA900 right before camera input which I have at the lowest possible.

    • @henningkraggerud9124
      @henningkraggerud9124 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Shure SHA900 which os a tiny headphone amplifier does have 4 band parametric Equalizer and and you can store 4 different user presets of this. I use this to get rid of most of the noise from Tascam now. Tascam I use to add reverb and a sometimes a bass boost. This way I can record violin and piano directly to camera and not synch or edit in post. It though took some time to figure out best settings. The parametric Equalizing and in and out 3.5mm DAC is extremely quick. I wrote to check this before buying. So Tascam amd Shure SHA900 is still good for me I record at 24 frames per Second. I did also read your review about other equipment,so for those who need a really small parametric EQ for live stream or broadcast the SHA900 is generally overlooked. Battery lasts a long time,more thsn 10 hours per charge. I use with 3.5mm for reverb . I havent yet tested usb.

    Welp, even though you think that the build quality isn't good, thousands of DR-40 units are still banging around go bags and don't miss a beat. While many YT reviewers have a fetish about metal-only construction, the reality is that the DR-40X and the DR-40 are rugged and decent enough for all but the most discriminating uses. Plastic doesn't mean trashy. The X model was essentially unchanged at a surface level because it is a if-it-isn't-broken-don't-fix-it sequel. The X is also an audio interface, which the original was not. Good value for money for a sub $200 recorder.

    Very informative review, Julian. Thank you.
    I had the DR-40, which got damaged so I've just ordered the DR-40X (same price). I didn't notice much of a floor noise before - at least not one that I couldn't easily remove in post.
    I'm not familiar with all the technicalities, so what I got is more by luck than judgement.
    I use this DVR with an LCT 640 condenser mic - so I'm not sure if the preamp noise issue is something I need to worry about.
    Could you please clarify this for me. I understood the the LCT mic has a built-in preamp (is that correct)? So do I simply disable the preamp in the Tascam (how do I do this)? Is this what the input gain is all about?
    I'm recording voiceover exclusively, so maybe none of this is relevant to me (just speak closer to the mic?)
    Alternatively, what do you suggest as a decent, inexpensive preamp for a condenser mic like the LCT?
    Or what do you suggest as a similar DVR like the Tascam in the same price range, but which doesn't have the problems you mentioned?
    :)

      Well, I managed to cancel my order for the DR-40X and decided to go for the Zoom H4n Pro for an extra $30. I hope I made the right choice, but one reviewer did seem to think it had a lower noise floor, plus the button layout seems a bit more logical (you can quickly select any of the 4 input channels in any combination and the menu button is away on the side) but otherwise all the other features seem identical. The only difference being that the built-in mics are fixed in XY position, but you can adjust the directionality from 90 to 120 degrees. Thanks again :)

    When you plug an electric guitar straight into the Tascam DR-40X, do you need a pre-amp? Without pre-amping, it seems like Tascam doesn't pick up an electric guitar signal much at all. The levels are barely there. Put a pre-amp between the guitar and the Tascam, and the levels are 'normal'. Is there something I've not discovered on the internal menus of the Tascam, or is that just the way it is (signal almost nil when recording electric guitar direct)?

    Hello Julian! Thank you for the video! I was starting to consider the DR-40x but was dissapointed by the noise level... If I'm going to be limited to the built-in microphones in order to avoid noise, than I guess it makes more sense to look at the Tascam DR-05x or the Zoom H1n... Do you have a suggestion between those two or in general? I'm looking to spend around $100 - $200... It's for recording the audio in my rock band's rehearsals. Good review, but concerning Input Noise comparison it worth to mention the price of each device in the list because they are from the different price categories. Current prices on B&H:
    - SD MixPre-3: $650
    - Zoom F4: $450
    - Zoom F8: $1000
    - Zoom H5: $280
    - Tascam DR-40X: $170
    Tascam decoders of the higher level have much better amplifiers. For example Tascam DR-60DMII ($200) has EIN rating of -120dBu (seems to be an excellent device for this price if you don't need build-in mics) and their flagship handheld recorder DR-100MKIII ($400) has EIN -124dBu with ability to record at 192kHz.
    BTH, SD MixPre-3 being very nice device in general has some issues with 192kHz recording according to "Most Helpful Critical Review" on B&H:
    www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1333778-REG/sound_devices_mixpre_3_mixpre_3_mic_preamps.html/reviews
    The quote about cheap plastic from Tascam official site:
    "Despite using lightweight plastic for the body in order to keep the overall weight low ... the ribbed internal structure achieves robustness as well as its lightweight."
    You have inspired me on all those researches, so thanks for your video!

    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I was so critical about the preamp noise of the DR-40X because for nearly the same price you can get the Zoom H4n, which has an EIN of about -120dBu(A). That's the same preamp noise as the H5 and this is miles ahead of the DR-40X. Cheers!

    • @yogamreet
      @yogamreet 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JulianKrause That's a good point although Zoom H4n Pro ($220 on B&H) is still more expensive than Tascam DR-40X and Tascam DR-60DMKII. The latter has better preamps and more descent limiter function than DR-40X. And all Tascams (including the most cheap DR-05) have at least one very nice feature that Zoom recorders missed (please correct me if I'm not right about Zooms):
      it is so called "overdubbing" mode, when you can play a music track and simultaneously record new one over it. So, you can record each instrument and vocal one by one if you want. In models that have 4 inputs (DR-40X and above) you can choose to record a clean track or a mix, in cheaper models with 2 inputs only you can record a mix only, but you can change the input volume of the playing track and your recording sound separately. I found it very useful even in the cheapest models and for me it's a deal breaker.
      So, my understanding of Tascam line-up is following:
      From DR-05X to DR-40X/DR-44WL - low-range models with a lot of nice features and excellent sound quality for that low price, but more expensive models in that range offer more features/options, but not better sound quality;
      DR-60DMKII / DR-70D / DR-701D - specially designed for filmmakers, have better sound quality than lower models, good reputation on the market and very affordable price ($200-$450);
      DR-100MKIII - for music recording (up to 192kHz) or for everything else if you need better quality than DR-40X can provide and want handheld form factor. Has great sound quality and some extra features (like digital input). It is definitely better than Zoom H4n Pro which you've mentioned above (and Zoom H5 either if it has the same preamp noise as you say): th-cam.com/video/Difo4xr7j3w/w-d-xo.html
      I highly appreciate your criticism about preamp noise, it helps a lot to understand the position of each model on sound quality gradation and that understanding is not easy to get somewhere else.

    Hi Julian. This is a great video. Thank you. You mentioned some other recorders at this position in the market which were better choices. Please would you recommend one for me. I'm looking for one that will record outdoor sounds of nature at a reasonable level? Thank you.

    It looks like it has a lot of useful features & it just needs an extra $100 for a FET-head if you use the mic preamp & also to ignore the limiter & do that elsewhere with post-processing. Plus a cover for the mic to keep wind out. That's not too bad I guess.
