  • WHITE MARBLE PAINTED COUNTERTOPS | EPOXY TOPCOAT | EASY AFFORDABLE DIY (without using a kit)
    Welcome to Part 1 of my Kitchen Renovation series! Over the next few weeks/ months I will be showing yall the final steps to completing a kitchen renovation all DIY style. Before starting this series I have retired the backsplash, retiled the floor, painted the cabinet, replaced the microwave, and now painted the kitchen cabinet! I will go over all of those in the final reveal!
    A few weeks ago I started painting my faux marble countertops and have finally gotten the time to finish them. The challenge for us was when we could find a time that we would be able to not use our counter surfaces for 3 days.
    This DIY white marble painted countertop is super easy and could be completed in a day (besides the drying time for the epoxy topcoat.) I am nowhere near being an artist and although the marble veining looks intimidating, it is very forgiving and super easy to make look realistic.
    I hope yall enjoy this DIY and if you try this one yourself please tag me so I can boost you on my Instagram.

    9 month update!!
    Structurally and functionally the countertop is holding up well to every day use. As you see in the video my moms kitchen gets FAR more light than I realize so since I used a pure white paint it started to yellow a bit. If I were to do this again I would choose to do a type of marble that isn’t as pure white (or a granite finish would work too). Also we let it cure for about a week or two to be safe by making sure things were placed on towels or cutting boards.
    TLDR: be aware of potential yellowing with pure white designs in high sun areas (UV exposure)

    • @justjenny3279
      @justjenny3279 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The epoxy did the yellowing

    • @rgbuckl
      @rgbuckl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's a shame because you did an outstanding job. There must be some type of UV protective product to use for or with the topcoat.
      I love the way you did the veins--looks much more realistic than most of the other techniques people use. Great job!

    First of all, your personality and voice is beautiful, secondly, thanks for giving me the courage to want to do this myself instead of hiring professionals. I am about to be a first time buyer on a pre-construction house and the builder decided "bruh lets just put ugly quartz here to save money" - so to ease the stress of moving in a house im already a little annoyed with, this DIY is the missing ingrieident. You're inspiring! You really did a great job! I really want to get to work on my own old, old outdated kitchen countertops and see them transformed, as well. I love the high gloss look too. Makes the countertops look very high end! My only concern now is how to pull this off and keep animals safe and out of harm's way while it cures. (Three days plus is a really long time to cure...I would hate to see little paw prints all over my masterpiece! ). How much does it cure in 24 hours?

    • @TheRachelThomasLife
      @TheRachelThomasLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I spent a little less because I had the primer and paint on hand since I was working on other renovation. But to purchase everything new it would be $20 for primer, $10 for base paint, $1 for the grey paint, and $60 per gallon of epoxy (our kitchen is big so I used two) if you used the brand I did but there are cheaper. So about $90 not including tarps tape and paintbrushes/ rollers which you can get for under $10. The kit that I saw online was $150 and I was going to need 2 of them which is why I knew I needed to find another way 😂

I am very artistic and tend to try my hand at a lot of things but I have never made a faux marble top before. I'm going to make one change to mine and that's instead of the epoxy I'm going to use polycrylic as the top coat due to drying time and ease of use. Great video!! Loved it. Need to watch it at least 2 or 3 more times. I missed what are you spreading the epoxy with?
    And how long did you wait for the paint to dry before applying epoxy coat?
    And where did you tape the plastic sheeting to? The top of the cabinet or under the countertop?
    And is all you have at the backsplash the masking tape?
    how do you know how much epoxy to pout or out?
    And last how much time to you have to get it spread out? Work in sections? It won't harden in the bucket if I'm slow?
    Sorry for all the questions but I just wanna get it right!!
    Totally gonna do this! Starting off small on my bathroom countertops. Does it tell you how much you need to mix up per square foot?
    Thank you soooo much for sharing your knowledge and technique.
    I literally was looking at Rustoleum acrylic but the 12 colors were ugly!
    Also thought about the tissue paper marbling but I really love this carrera looking marble with the high gloss!
    How long does it last?
    And how long for it to cure if it needs that?
    TIA hope you see 👀 my questions.
    Thanks again! 👍❤

    This is beautiful! How do you do it with hot items? I found this really nice contact paper and it has been damaged by ei: hot plates removed from microwave and hot cups of coffee lol I need to change it. I am curious to know if I am going to run into the same issue with this top coat.

    This looks fabulous. I also love your backsplash. Any info on what pattern that is, where you purchased it?

    good video-shouldn't you have use a polyurethane seal coat before applying the Epoxy resin. I hope your countertops don't discolor in shadowy places e.g. under an appliance that stays in one place.

      Hi, I am new to these things so I want to ask why should a seal coat be put? Does it help?

    I have a built in backing. How can I do the epoxy on that please? Also, what would a littler glitter look like in there?

      Oh. Yes great question! My counter has a 3 inch lip up in the backwall too..where the backsplash is. How do you cover that with the epoxy? Yikes

    Did you use just a regular hair dryer at the end? Didn’t know if it was a stronger heat out put or you could just use a normal hair dryer
