  • This Blender tutorial shows how I mixed 2D Grease Pencil and 3D animations together. The mistakes I made and what I learned! This sure was a journey from nothing to something.

Hi guys! I hope you learn something new! 🥰
    Previous breakdown tutorial here:

There’s tips for the procedural sky texture I also used in this project.

Using the modifiers to do all the hard animation work is really powerful. Thank you for making animation seem a lot less scary.

We don't often see real life modifier use cases like these. Thank for sharing !

      Thank you!
No problem man! Glad you like it 🥰
I think this is just a tip of the iceberg when talking about FX. Real fun should start when we can use geo nodes to modify grease pencil drawings 😍

Man I just love how u come up with alternative options to simplify some usual 3D fx stuff with Grease pencil. Good job on this, it's very inspiring 👏🤩🌟 (Bro the Conan mouse bahaha love the reference 🤣)

Hahaha thank you bro! It means a lot! I hope this inspires people to try grease pencil 😍
I love Conan! I listen to the soundtrack all the time! Epic stuff :D

it never occurred to me that having 2 build modifiers is an option! world of possibilities unlocked, thanks :)

Really fun animation! This is how I usually go about doing a spontanious animation, too. So much rework because 'oh wouldn't it be cool if...' strikes me!

You mention Time, and saving Time, but : how much Time did you invest in this Experimentation? 10 hours? More?
    It's a good first step.
My biggest critique is the animation curves on the Jump and the Smash.
They ignore the basics of Animation like Anticipation, Squash, and FllowThrough. Here everything feels like it's flowing linearly. You want to increase acceleration on the downstroke.

Great video Dantti, I can feel you when you deduced that planning ahead before doing ANYTHING is crucial.
I have a question that arose during this whole process:
You moved the mouse's rear arm layer deeper than the body in the Y axis. If you used a separate layer to color in the mouse's rear arm, the paint would automatically go to the top of the drawing, in front of the rear arm. Is there a way to automatically align layers in the 3D space?

Thank you 😅 It was a pain, one reason I used a material with stroke + fill.
One trick is to use drawing plane: view and use the fill tool, but you need to switch to edit mode, select stroke and fill and reproject them to front and move / scale them back to the correct size. Not fun if you have an animation going. Other way would be to have those rear arm etc layers as separate GP Objects. Then the drawing plane would honor the Y axis offset better.

nice video thank you! but 2d animation must come easy for you, seeing as you're a 2d character yourself!
