Joe Montana is the GOAT. Back when he played, QBs were allowed to get hit like a truck. Joe's toughness throughout the years was UNMATCHED. And that toughness beats TB12 in the discussion.
And yet Jerry Rice and Steve Young did a commercial where it looked like they were dating.

For some reason, Rice prefers Montana to Young even though Young threw more TDs to him than Montana did (92 vs 67).
The TD/game ratio was better with Young too.
Montana and Rice started 77 games together from '85-'90 (they were technically teammates from '85-'92 but 0 starts for Montana in '91 and '92, though).
Young and Rice started 114 games together from '87-'99 (Young only started 10 games from '87-'90).
Montana-Rice starting: 67 TDs in 77 games (1.15 TDs per game)
Young-Rice starting: 92 TDs in 114 games (1.24 TDs per game)
Young-Rice was better than Montana-Rice, which the aforementioned stats proved.
He's talking about chemistry, something intangible. Intangibles aren't a stat. Jerry knows he's caught more TDs from Steve than Joe. Jerry also has a sweet-spot for Joe because as a rookie, he was under a lot of pressure to succeed and he had a case of the drops. Joe could have ignored him and went with a receiver he trusted more but he didn't give up on Jerry. He said something like, "Jerry, if you're open, I'm throwing you the football." That's why he's Joe Cool. He relieved Jerry of that pressure and his drops stopped. Remember the Superbowl 23 Harris Barton story?
BTW, Jerry's best statistical season was in 1995. Back up Elvis Grbac threw him the ball while Steve was dealing with injuries for almost half the season. He had Joe and Steve both throwing him the football in the 87 season where Jerry put up 22 TDs in 12 games. So if Jerry preferred Joe over the others, it's not meant to be shade to Steve or anyone. It's a preference.

Would say that one dude does not say this about another dude, but this is Jerry Rice.
