    Awesome. Maybe next time, you could do "Start warhammer with no talent" ? Like grab someone who has never do painting or craft and just guide them. Maybe you and Lucas each grab one "newbie" and guide them, unable to do anything yourself with your hand, but guiding them and see the results after a day or two. I feel it would be super cool and also be a video full of tricks and advice(even more than usual), a very condescend one.

      that sounds like an awesome Idea! I'm always a bit skeptical about these "Beginner/Low-Budget Guides" since they are still being done by professionals with years of experience in painting/modeling miniatures, which kind of skews the results compared with something that a complete newbie would be capable of (still an awesome video btw).

    Great video, I especially like Lucas's paintjob with 4 colors. That said I think the title is a little misleading, I wouldn't call it starting Warhammer, rather starting display painting/diorama making. Even if you could play warhammer with 2 figures, they are on a diorama so you have 0 miniatures to play with without doing a slotted diorama :D.

    While this is nice there is a much easier way? The recruit edition is discounted to like $35 or even less in most local stores and the paint starter set I got for $28 and that comes with clippers, a brush and a "mould line remover" (sort of, GW comon). This gets you 20 models, a guide booklet and 13 paints, including red, blue, yellow, black, white, metal and gold among others.
    This is enough for 2 people to be able to play so I'd say you only need around $30-$35 if you get into it with a friend or double if you try it out yourself. This is also a good price for like a Christmas or birthday present and is a very good entry point to the hobby without having to commit to anything.
    And the Primaris and Necron warriors are also quite beginner friendly to paint. Just priming a Necron with Leadbelcher and washing it with Eartshade make them look like a space terminator, bit of Glow on the guns and done, it's so easy any kid can do it.

    • @Almindale
      @Almindale 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems like a lot for a beginner to digest though. So many minis can become detrimental when you're suddenly faced with what seems like a LOT of figures to paint at once. I personally found just a couple of minis to paint when I started was easier than the 5 mini combat patrol I bought next as it suddenly became a daunting prospect painting it all! Each to their own though. I mainly do warhammer stuff for the hobby side rather than the game so I'm a bit biased.

    • @ageoflove1980
      @ageoflove1980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Almindale Well yes usually that's certainly the case. But with these models you can just prime the space marines blue and the necrons metallic. Add a bit of gold detail on the Primaris and some glow on the Necrons and they already sort of look like they are supposed to. No heads or faces, no cloths, hair or banners etc.. You cant really mess these up. Every kid with average hand- eye coordination can get all these models look at least decent and playable within a couple of hours since you don't even need to glue these if you really don't want to.

    • @Almindale
      @Almindale 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ageoflove1980 that sounds like a response someone who's painted a fair few minis would do :P Again though it's horses for courses. I personally preferred painting a couple myself, other friends just spray painted a pile of necrons silver back in 4th ed and that was enough for them. Everyone is an individual and this video is only one way to enter the hobby :)

    • @ageoflove1980
      @ageoflove1980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Almindale Actually I'm a beginner too, well sort of. I did some Warhammer Fantasy 20 years ago and then left the hobby alone. Recently I was looking for something fun to do with my 14 year old son who spends a bit too much time on his gaming laptop and phone. He did have a bit of experience with putting together model fighter jets so I thought this would be fun to try and something he might enjoy. Now for kids that age its very important to have something that is both challenging but also doable, otherwise they will just lose interest because its just too much of a hassle. I was pleasantly surprised how relatively easy it was for him to build and paint these models from the starter set. He felt like he was doing really well and that made it all the more fun. I don't know if we have an interest in taking the hobby any further but I feel its already time and money well spent.

  • @looselycollected7505

    Don't get me wrong. These are beautiful. Especially considering the limited amount of stuff you used and the scrounging you did to get the supplies to finish them. But when you say getting started with Warhammer, I sort of expected that you guys would be building some very small starter armies to play. Maybe even having to strip and paint or repaint used figures bought at a discount. I'd like to see what you guys would do if you had to come up with a very basic beginning sized army. The bare minimum you'd need to play a game. And Try to do so as cheaply as possible. Then chronicle the various things you did to try to make it work. Maybe get a couple more friends to compete. So there are 4 or 5 people. That way we can see different thinking. It might be a good idea for a collaborative video. And of course you'd all have to basically start with nothing but a set amount of money. And you'd basically have a budget where you added a bit of money each week. And a month to gather it in.

      @Morrodin182 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah I was kind of thinking the same. Nice looking dioramas for the money spent but I do think most people starting out with Warhammer don't start with the idea 'I want to make dioramas' but instead 'I want to play a few matches'.
      If I would do this challenge I'd probably go: 1 box of Gloomspike Gitz grots (€ 28,89 from my retailer), some cheap brushes and rest of the money on paints. That way you have at least one troop to actually play with AND those grots actually are very usable to start a Warcry warband with some different troops: The boss, 2 or 3 netters, few stabbas and a few shootas.

    Btw you can recycle your old messed up paint brushes and turn them into sculpting tools.
    All you need is a straw, fill it with basic silicone caulk, and stick your dead brush in there and let it cure.. it's better to remove the fibers prior, but keeping some is handy for reinforcement like rebar in concrete.
    The tip you can either cut to shape after or prior to filling the straw you can shape it. Also clear tape + folded cardboard for flat bladed tools and you can mold existing silicone tools with some plaster of Paris and you got infinite tips for when they wear.

    This definitely feels like more of a easy way to get into Warhammer for someone into crafts, dioramas or some other kind model making (like gunpla, military models or model trains). Because without that kind of experience beforehand I could see it being hard for a newcomer to know how to maximize this small pool of supplies and make something they’re happy with.
    Especially since most newcomers to the hobby won’t know that the hobby part is the thing they enjoy most yet. So I’d definitely recommend something a bit more well rounded for their first experience, like a Kill Team Squad or splitting the Recruit box and some supplies with a friend or family member.

    • @Almindale
      @Almindale 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Still seems like a lot of minis though. I started with a GW paint set and that was it, so only a chaos warrior and a 2nd ed marine. I think that was a good way to work out if I liked the hobby or not and I didn't feel overwhelmed.

      It's much better to just extend the budget a bit or use third party discounts. For £60 (gw prices) you can get the recruit edition starter set for 40k and the paint/tool set containing all the paints you need (might have to mix to get a few colours) a paint brush, clippers, and a mould line remover.
      And if you've got a pen knife lurking around they'll usually do as knives.
      That is a far, far better start as not only do you have all the tools, you have all the paints, and the rules to play your own little games at the end. But I guess isn't really a video...

    *What would you do differently starting this again with the knowledge from this experiment?
    *What products were most useful? What products let you down? What products should you make sure to spend extra on if possible, and what can you afford to go cheaper on?
    *If you wanted to start playing for $50, rather than wanting to start modelling for $50, what choices would you have made instead?

      A truly invaluable video for new hobbyists - and therefore, I'm guessing for quite a lot of the subscribers too!
      I avidly followed Squidmar for a year before buying my first hobby tools, and that was precisely the kind of advice I would have wanted more of before I splurged on hobby tools. Not knowing anything else, I ended up paying some 250 USD on my first order. I know there's already plenty of videos out there on the topic, but for s hesitant (and anxious) first buyer there can never be enough.
      Loved to see how easy it can be with this video, and wholly encourage everyone watching to just get started!
      And my tip: a few good acryllic paints, a really good medium sizef brush and a cheap syntethic medium size, is all you need for the painting part. Skip the contrast paints, shades and extra brushes for your first few minis!

    Great video; the tricky part for many people would be that for 50 bucks, the choices you make are so much more important on what materials and what mini's to get. And if you're into crafts already (or usually paint mini's already) it's a bit easier. Seeing someone paint non-metallic metals with a limited pallette is a good show of skills, but that's not for someone who just wants to get into miniature painting most of the time. Both of you had a fairly good idea of the end result... and that's the tricky part on a limited budget; buying exactly what you need
    Also; it must be nice to have a decent hobby store in the area... if I can spend 50 on hobby, about 10 to 15% is already spent on transport or shipping fees. (but this is just me being salty that there's no real hobby community or stores in the area)

    I understand what everyone is saying. But this is basically how I got into it. I went to a comic book store and saw all kinds of minis and dioramas. I bought a few battle tech ones and made little set ups with legos etc, I thought they were the shit tbh. After awhile I got bored of them and went back to comic books. One day I go in and I see all the 40k and AoS stuff and I thought it was really cool. I talked the owner (mind you this guy did not know me personally he just knew I came in like once a week to get the new halo comic) and he said he had some old Warhammer dwarves in the back, he let me have them no questions asked. I went home put them bad boys together and the rest was history. Genuinely a lot hobby stores will give you random sprews for like 6-10$, sometimes even free. It’s a good way to get started imo. Just making little set ups and scenes with whatever minis you think are cool at the time.

    This is a great demo to show that is more about skill and experience than expensive tools. But, there are a lot of these 'beginner scenario' videos and I think they miss the mark. A beginner might not have a strict budget, but also won't even consider cork mats for the base, and often so want to paint a unit to tabletop quality. I would love to see a similar idea, but doing a Space Marine Tactical Squad or an Orc AoS unit, with a simple starter paint set and very simple basing, maybe with updates that you CAN buy extra tools and paints, but show this and why they were necessary.

  • @mercury00169
    @mercury00169 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah this might be a good way of getting into painting but it won't get you playing. My suggestion would be the push-to-fit Castigator pack ($16.50) + Vindictors Paint Set ($35) totalling in $51.5 (perhaps you can weasel a $1.5 discount for being a new customer paying your first $50). This way you get 6 models (and some paints for them) which make a full Warcry warband. Perhaps not perfect but at least you can start playing. And you'll also be left with an extra vindictor which you can use for the kind of diorama seen in the video.

  • @VerhoevenSimon

    The reason you shouldn’t use graffiti spraypaint like black , golden or Molotov is because the paint is thick so you can cover ground very wel in one “spray” because it’s graffiti

And while you might have had the gloves lying around, I doubt someone new to the hobby of mini painting would have a mini painting handle laying around. not to mention the hobby mats etc.

    This is about getting into the painting hobby for $50 and not warhammer, it seems like $75 could get you started without most of the issues. If instead of asking a shop for stuff they have and are never going to use, you asked a couple of friendly gamers, most would set you up with a bunch of models and some dupe or unfavoured paints.

    This is cool and I agree with you guys that the hobby is a lot less expensive than what GW would like it to be if you're clever and don't have artificially created FOMO. I'll add one caveat. Although you can technically get away with your challenge, having horrible brushes is one of the main pain points of people starting in the hobby. I have a horrible time painting with bad brushes and wheneber someone wants to get started mini painting the #1 thing i'll tell them above minis even is get decent brushes.

    Emil used/ bought the wrong type of graffiti spray can :/
    If you want to use graffiti spray cans, like Emil intended to with his Montana Black, then get some Montana Gold cans instead, covers really smooth and doesn't ruin any details. Costs about €5.5 per can (55 SEK). I use it myself and I have never had any issues with them, and they got a lot of colors to pick from so it can fit any army you're working on.
    I've also heard that Molotov Premium is pretty good for use on miniatures but I can't confirm since I haven't tried their cans myself yet.

    While this is a cool video, the title is misleading.
    I would like to suggest another video idea if I may.
    How about a video where you must get the bare minimum done for a legal force of 40K i.e. A hq and two troop choices. You must adhere to the codex if your chosen force ( no two poxwalker squads as it's illegal).
    You could also do a chart like the one on a very popular British Motor show from a few years ago. Set mini challenges with the challenge i.e you have a budget of $50 for the models a point for ever $ under. - A budget of $10 for supplies, a point for every 50¢ under. - $10 for paint a point for ever 50¢ under, - Must have a minimum of 3 paints (besides black which must also be included ) etc. etc.
    You could do a whole series with that format.........as has been proven.

    I go to the dollar store. the paint quality isn't good, but the craft paints are a great value. even the water colors used as a wash are a better value for adding tone and definition. additionally, if you stay away from the GW mini's, there are ways of getting buckets of mini's cheap (no 3D printing).
