KoRn will always will be one of the most important Bands of my Youth, still love their music and how much energy they provide. Thanks for listening to "Blind" Doug, you know their Bagpipe Intros and Outros?
The song Here To Stay is sick. In fact, there are some wild compositions and amazing songs on Untouchables. The Gothic backup vocals on almost every song make the entire album feel larger than life. It's one of their heaviest, most controversial amongst fans, and is my personal favorite.
Here to Stay is one of my fav songs by them! I saw them live on Monday and it was incredible!! They opened up with here to stay and I shed some tears but after, my body couldn’t stay still. Korn does something to my body and I love it😂🤘🏼
About two months after this CD dropped I had bought a new stereo, put this CD is, and the track BLIND not only blew me away it blew out both speakers within two minutes... worth it.
I'm like 76% sure I ran into The Undertaker at a Korn show in Athens, GA in '96 or '97. Im 6'3 and ran face first into a random dude's chest in the pit, all I remember is looking up into long, curly red hair and The Stare and immediately made my way out of the pit to cool off.
I saw Korn on a small second stage at a festival show in 1995, they played most of their first album in order (iirc). Korn was the best with David as the drummer.
*Update, made a mistake in the tuning, fixing it here, was thinking of Nirvana. Notice, no guitar solos, no typical song format, bass 5 string, A standard tuning, guitars 7 strings A standard for most songs, and of course, the Nu-ances that are on effect tracks This did cause an issue with radio airplay at first, but the Nu-Metal genre took off. @MAGA-T_HUNTER_De I didn't start listening to Korn until late '04, to mid '05. I had a friend that tried to get me to listen to Untouchables. I still remeber being a classic rock is the only good music kinda doofus. Then another friend of mine needed a ride to Sam Goody to pick up a new CD. We listened to it on the way home. Yall want a single came on and i was hooked. Over the next couple years i bought the first 5 albums and just wore them out. I stopped listening after the album with twisted transistor, and coming undone.
For me, the first album is the best Korn album. VERY different for 1994, and still. untouchable today. Ross Robinson had a lot to do with the Korn sound...he took out all the funny or lighthearted bits.
I saw them in Alpharetta,GA on Monday and the post concert depression is so real:( They were incredible!!! I 🖤 Korn. My body was sore for days after but it was soooo worth it!🤘🏼
React to this same song From Woodstock 99!! You will not be disappointed! I was in that crowd! The air was sucked out. Which was weird cause we were outdoors!
Blind has always been my favorite, but Coming Undone is a close second, so I'd really like to see you do that one. I'm Jonathan's age and I've been listening to them since their beginning. My son is now a huge Korn fan without influence from me. He's very musicality inclined and i can't wait to see what he thinks of this video. I think he can learn alot...thank you ❤
The album "Issues" is when I feel like they really find their sound, and still has that edge. "Somebody, someone" is probably the heaviest song, "Falling away from me" is pretty great too. I grew up in a community with a lot of old school rock purists, where you had to feel deep shame if your foot moved to a Britney song, and i always hated that crap. The great thing about Nu Metal and Alt metal was that all of those metal elitist people HATED it! So I could listen to music i loved AND stick it to some narrow minded people. I DO NOT think KoRn is "simple" or "bad" music, the way they use chromaticism in their composition was pretty radical at the time, and something you mostly found in contemporary orchestral music at the time. They do amazing things with their low-end, and the drumming is pretty good. Nu Metal caught a lot of crap for being angsty and emotional, and it is. But we were coming out of an age where male emotion in pop music where limited to "happy/horny", "angry/violent" and "in love/sappy" (with occasional manly sadness). I think it was high time other emotions were explored. Does it get a bit much sometimes? Yeah! Does it hold value for Jonathan to tell about his abuse, that it sucks, and that you can work your way through it? Yeah, i really think it does! Great band!
You know the song the moment it starts. The symbol taps go, and the crowd goes wild! This song hooked me when it came out and I've been a Korn fan ever since!
I remember living in California back in the 90s and buying a cheap demo cd for $1 at the guitar store and it had this song and Cracker Low on it, loved both songs and shortly after they were regulars on MTV. Good listen!
I did not fully understand the middle part of the analysis, but can certainly tell that the opening riff is one of meanest and impactful openings of the genre. I just love the energy of the song, it's so raw.
Oh man I missed the premiere by mere minutes haha I saw Korn in 1995 in Tucson Arizona touring on this first album It was a triple bill with Korn opening No Doubt then the British band Bush headlining Nobody was doing what Head and Munky were doing on 7 string guitars back then They brought in all the weird tunings I think Feildy is such an underrated bassist The wicked sick grooves he and the drummer David laid down still stand the test of time An all time classic banger Btw BALL TOUNGE from this same album is even more brutal than Blind and the back story of the recording of the song is stuff of legeng 🧐😎✌️🤘
I can't wait I am going to see them for the 3rd time in 3 weeks in Toronto. There is nothing like Korn live let me tell ya, loudest band I have ever heard live!
I've seen them this year @ Wacken Open Air. Waited 20 years. BEST Concert in years. And Blind?! Check a Live version. So much more powerful, Anyway, have a nice week :)
You should really listen to "Daddy" and "Shoots and ladders" from that album. Those are two songs that really show the connection with their inner traumas and the music goes right besides them. Truly one of my favourite albums from that time.
*Strongly* disagree with suggesting a reaction to “Daddy” as it has badly upset numerous reactors already, from them being in tears to feeling anger over the subject.
In my book there's 3 debut albums that leave all others in the dust and were perfect albums from beginning to end - Korn's first album, Machine Head's Burn My Eyes, and Amaseffer's Slaves for Life. I must have replayed this album more than anything else (except perhaps Tool's Aenima).
I'm so glad you did some more KoRn! They're one of my favorite bands and have some really interesting sounds in their music. You may be interested in the covers they did on a few songs from Pink Floyd's The Wall. If you do listen to Daddy, please be aware that it can be disturbing as Jonathan is using his experience from when he was molested as a child as the topic and towards the end he really breaks down which can be difficult to listen to. KoRn is definitely a rabbit hole worth exploring though.
No Place To Hide was the first song of theirs that I heard on the radio and I was like, what is this? Then their 2nd song was Freak on a Leash. Then Got The Life. If I like more than one song from a band, I'll buy the album. It took me a while to really 'get it'. I love Jonathan because I can sorta relate to some of my experiences growing up with his. And his vocals are phenomenal.
If it tells you anything about growing up in a percussion family - I screamed this song sooo loud in my car seat with the windows down, I scared a lady in her car 😂 KoRn was my upbringing and truly hold core memories. So unique, chunky, such a deep band. Love them
I’ve listened to metal for years and especially grew up with bands like korn staind and limp bizkit. Never knew what a “tritone” was even though I’ve heard it so much. Nice to learn something haha
I recommend Oildale (Leave Me Alone), Got the Life, Here to Stay, Good God, Start the Healing, Ball Tongue, Hey Daddy, A.D.I.D.A.S, Dead Bodies Everywhere, Coming Undone, Make Me Bad, Clown, Right Now, Trash, Somebody Someone. I could recommend way more but those are just some:)
30 years ago the world was mourning Kurt Cobain's death and Grunge still dominated the airwaves. Then "Blind" came out and Korn changed everything. This was the beginning of a New era, the Nü Metal era 🔥
Next step will be reacting to "daddy" by Korn, but I warn you, it's probably the hardest thing to get through. That's not a song, but an art performance that can make a tear drop also from the strongest heart. It is an experience everybody should have, but nobody is ever really ready for that level of authenticity in sharing such horrific emotions
I was under the impression the "The Tom" was the bass guitar drop tuned. The gentleman who mixed it was used to doing Jazz & R&B so the bass levels were higher than usual Rock arrangements
All the things you pointed out that weren't typical Metal is why I've always considered them Hard Rock. As far as i know they've always considered the band to be a rock band. Not metal. But, genres get created, change, etc. I get it. One of my favorite bands and I've never thought of them as Metal.
As a 47 yr old who saw an unsigned Korn @ the Roseland NYC open up for Biohazard who opened for House of Pain. Age 15. Living in the pit. I got lots of apathy from my folks. 1992 was different. Then I moved to AZ when Head did. Then I heard the song: I Am The Thing That’s Killing Me. That melody of the chorus vocals. I wake up singing that song in a happy mood. Like knowing a horror movie is a movie by seeing the girl in the background.
Edit: Grip, as in the dude doing the punching in Tropic Thunder. BTW, their song Twist, um, play that for a child, like 9, and see what they think. Singring & the Glass Guitar. What would Doug call 12 Foot Ninja? Australian band that changes genre mid song. Starts off current metal, then Latin-jazz then Disco, then back to the metal. And they are not taking themselves seriously but their musicianship is top-notch.
oh man, it'd be cool to see Doug react to the music video for Follow the Leader. You don't see a lot of music video reactions in general because its usually just a band in a room. But THAT video is OUTSTANDING.
7 string lead guitar and 5 string bass from Ibanez downtune to the core with funky and groovy drums, thats Korn and they ruled the mid 90s not because they dress well but they brought something new to the table that was inspired from Mr.Bungle, Primus, Duran Duran and ran with it.
Probably go with Follow the Leader Album, only because of the hype for the album at the time - "Untouchables" probably being the best produced album (from a technical sound point) Personal Favourite is the "Life is Peachy" Album. Guitars are tuned to low A - 7 String for all albums.
Awesome! Now go from Korn to Kiss. Both starts with an K, both 4 letters 😁 I would love to hear your take on their Music From The Elder CD from 1981. A really special album! Keep up the great work!
I would suggest to go with something from Untouchables album. Possibly first single Here To Stay, where Jonathan improved a lot his singing skills. Or maybe something with more unique sound like Alone I break. Or absoulte killer Thoughtless :D
I highly recommend you react to Manowar's live performance of Battle Hymn in 2005 in Germany. Eric Adam's vocals are incredible and that performance has 2 guest drummers and 2 guitarists and also a whole orchestra
Go leftfield and analyse “No One’s There” from the Untouchables album. Not a single, but one of the best Korn songs and album closures for sure. Production, writing and structure are huge
It's awesome to see a classical music composer reacting to rock/metal- I like both as well. Even better that you're not one of those reactors that pauses every 30 seconds to use their musical knowledge to explain what's going on. Have you heard of a band called Adagio? They're symphonic metal, so it blends orchestral sound with metal. As doing a search for "Adagio" will yield a plethora of non-related videos, so I'm trying to think of a song title... Ok, Next Profundis is a title.
You probably already know, but they use 7 string guitars tuned down a full step. They are the reason I bought an 8 string guitar and I tune it down a full step
Love your work Doug, but please just do Deftones already😅 Anything from the White Pony album would do, but I'd recommend any of Digital Bath, Feiticiera, knife party, korea, passenger (with maynard keenan on vocals), pink maggit. You can't go wrong, imo its the high water mark of Nu metal (and 90s/00s heavy music). Dark, heavy and melancholic while also dreamy and melodic. They build layers of harmonies and crunching riffs, with some of the most belting drumming you'll hear from any music genre, but its Chino's vocals that bring it all together. His range is incredible and goes between "straight" singing to screaming, growling even rapping, often deliberately adding dissonance to the chords the band are playing. His vocal cords actually exploded while touring the album back in 2000. SOAD and Tool are the only bands, of the era, that can compete for musicality and originality (my opinion). Honestly its a treat for the ears!
OMG MORE KORN!!!!! Pls U have to react to any song rly off the Untouchables album, but my personal recommendation is Seed off of their 3rd album I think you'd like it
As a 13 year old kid, this hit harder than almost anything else at the time. Now at 43 it's baffling this album is now 30.
Same, dude, same
Absolutely, seen this on Bevis and Butthead and had to get the album. Shit hit so hard.
Timeless for sure!
This did hit harder than anything. I'm 41 and this album changes my life forever.
Shoots and ladders is definitely interesting 😁 and it proofs that bagpipes and metal harmonize well!
KoRn will always will be one of the most important Bands of my Youth, still love their music and how much energy they provide. Thanks for listening to "Blind" Doug, you know their Bagpipe Intros and Outros?

I highly recommend you react to Manowar's live performance of Battle Hymn in 2005 in Germany. Eric Adam's vocals are incredible and that performance has 2 guest drummers and 2 guitarists and also a whole orchestra
Go leftfield and analyse “No One’s There” from the Untouchables album. Not a single, but one of the best Korn songs and album closures for sure. Production, writing and structure are huge
Right now, can´t find a way to get accross the hate when I see u, Right now!!! that´s a good one from Korn
MORE KORN! Here to Stay?
Hi Doug! Where can I watch your reaction to Falling away from me because i don't find it anywhere on TH-cam?
It would be a pleasure for me to see you reacting to Camel - Long Goodbyes, Total Pressure in 1984.
Check out ADIDAS off Life is Peachy, that way you’ll have heard a bit from each of their first 4 records.
Nice shirt
OMG MORE KORN!!!!! Pls U have to react to any song rly off the Untouchables album, but my personal recommendation is Seed off of their 3rd album I think you'd like it
Ball Tounge from this album is a banger and always overlooked. Check it out. 🤘🤘
Korn is the only band where the first song of the first album is the best one they made. The rest is awesome too!!!
Great review. I’d love to see you review any song by Tool. Preferably the song Pneuma.
It would be amazing to hear you breakdown that band/song
Their best album and single
Ross Robinson knew how to make this stuff sound like it was ripping out of your guts.
