But, I feel like (having experienced this song) that I understand their point of view and respect it. Society's ills have a way of informing our art, and this song is no exception!

Someone classically trained not immediately dismissing heavy music has given me hope. I was classically trained. I love metal.
My girlfriend is classically trained and has a masters degree in music. I took her to a Suffocation/Atheist show over the weekend and she had a blast.
There used to be a lot of snobbery around Classically trained musicians going back to the 60s. This snobbery is still there in some circles and even Two Set violins ect...What classically trained musicians don't realise is that you should never compare popular music to classical music. They are two very different things. Another aspect is that people think high information music or elaborate sophistication is somehow better. This isn't true because almost anyone can write a piece of music and make it complex and dizzying just so that people will say 'wow, that's so complex ect...' It's just as difficult to write a great love song as it is to write a great classical piece. In all genres there is great music and not so great. It has always been that way and it will always be that way.
@@MICKEYISLOWD As far as TwoSet goes I'm pretty sure there "anything that isn't classical is bad" thing is caricature. Eddy listens to a lot of popular music but classical is obviously their preference
A lot of metal musicians are classically trained so it's not that surprising

The best line I heard from him was to the question about Slipknot music being angry. 20 plus years later, are you still angry? His answer was something like "not anymore, but when I slip the mask on, and get ready to go on stage, I remember that angry young guy and he comes out to play"

@@joshzickus8394 Nothing wrong with a good breakdown, though! It's definitely better if you spice it up composition-wise. Combining solos and breakdowns is starting to become more common, or even just doing more weird shit with it. Gotta keep the dynamics going.

Corey Taylor is insane at vocals, if you are interested in hearing something more of him rather than growling I'd suggest taking a look at some of his work in Stone Sour. Or you could take a listen to Snuff by Slipknot, there's plenty of reactions already to that song since its very famous but it would be interesting to see your perspective on it. Very different from what you listened here and with powerful lyrics

I think that's kind of the point, honestly. Given the themes of the song, never resolving to the root of the key sort of serves the message a bit better, because it keeps you anxious for it. Gives you that psychosocial feeling.
There's a key change in the chorus

Yes the clean vocals have more musicality to it, but the growls carry more emotion. In my view, emotionally effecting your audience is most important. Those are usually the songs that sick with people. These growls really evoke the anger, and frustration in the lyrics. To be honest, it does take a while to get use to it at first. Great reaction. Love your videos.
A lot of people say Metal is better with singers like Rob Halford, Ozzy, and Dio, but I just don’t think it carries the aggression that screams can. However, Bands that are always screaming like Infant Annihilator are emotionally flat; yeah, it’s aggressive, but it’s so constant, it becomes monotonous, to me. I think combining singing and screams is the best way to really get the emotions going. Pantera and Slipknot are pretty good at it.
@@joshua.merrill Absolutely. Over used makes the song emotionally unimpactfull, in my opinion. Slipknot became great at using variations for emotional connection.

Also with Corey Taylors growls, he still articulates and pronounces words well so you can hear mostly all the words. it really helps me connect with the emotion and meaning behind the songs as opposed to some metal groups that their vocals are indistinguishable. Another vocalist that I love is Tatiana from the band Jinjer. Her and Corey are my 2 favourite metals vocalists/top 5 vocalists period.
Psychosocial is a great Slipknot intro song!... but man is just the tip of the iceberg. I hope he gets back to it sometime soon.

It's hard to believe that anyone hasnt heard of slipknot. They've had multiple huge radio hits since the early 2000s. Probably one of the heaviest bands to get massive radio play.
He works in music. You tend to not be able to listen to the radio when you are writing music

The line "The limits of the dead' remind me of a line in the movie The Ten Commandments when Moses is explaining to Rameses on why he gave the slaves temple wheat and one day in seven to rest. Referring to making bricks, "The strong make many. The weak make few. The dead make none." Just a thought.
Before I Forget is one of my favourites from Slipknot. You should definitely give it a listen.

I’m so happy seeing someone classically trained from that background be able to enjoy and appreciate the musical content of metal in the same way I as a metal head enjoy and appreciate classical music
I wish more people could remove the judgement and enjoy music for its raw creativity and the talent involved rather than “ew I don’t like music like that” and boxing taste into boxes
Metal music from my interpretation (being a lifelong metal head), is meant to bond us. To bring us together and let each other know we aren’t alone. Anger, hurt, betrayal, sadness, love all is real and true emotions. Truly sad when people judge or don’t take the time to understand and judge the “noise”. Appreciate this reaction, interpretation, and understanding ❤️ hope this is just the tip of the iceberg!
yes, people most of the time stop their thoughts on the first look, the external part, and not often try to understand or get the inner meaning. Metalheads LOVE to play with edgy themes and look like they eat babies as a diner, but most of the time they are the kindest, nicest, most open minded, empathic and i can go on like this for a long time, people you can meet. The superficial side is just an armor to hide the desillusion and sadness about the society and how the world works. They are the most sane and true people i ever met, of course with some exceptions... but if more people really tried to get the ideas and fit this mood, the world would be a much better place for everyone.
To me it's like a collective outlet. A way to vent off anger and frustration through feeling the music. Which would explain why metalheads are the jolliest people I've ever met.
I love your comment so much. I don't have friends in this small town into this stuff and wish I could go to a concert. I love metalheads. I'm in my 40s now all and all my friends have started families I'm the that ONE still single and headbanging to metal on weekends to TH-cam! Great comment thank you!
@@wootle if it’s any consolation I am also from a very small town and grew up with nobody interested in this stuff (all country), which I am okay with too! It just made things hard when people didn’t understand nor appreciate the music, technique, and skills it takes in the genre along with taking the time to admire the poetry, symbolism, and realism of the lyrics. My dad started my brother and I on rock, classic rock, metal, and all sub-genres in between and at his age of 52 and me in my late twenties - I’m still his concert buddy (just bought Sevendust and static X tickets today😅). Us metalheads must stick together 💕
Dead Memories is one of slipknots more tame songs. It’s actually one of my favorites from all hope is gone

Vermillion Part 1 I would highly recommend. Vocals not too heavy and its them at their very best. It needs to be the full length and not the single version

Honestly, I think part 1 and part 2 should be in the same video, just because it elevates each song wonderfully. The contrast is awesome.
I saw them live in 2004 & 2015. I met Corey and still have the Clown (Shawn’s) drumstick. I’m thankful I got to see them with the original lineup. Personally, I prefer their older stuff; however I’m very happy to see Doug getting into heavier stuff. There is so much beautiful music in the world, all genres. ❤ 🎵

Kudos to you Dough for trying to work out what Key(s) they were playing in. This track has a really great driving Hook and chorus… one of my favourites from the band - You should attempt more from this band imo 🤘🏼

Please more Slipknot. They are the limit of what I can take at heavy metal, and they are awesome. Corey Taylor is talented. (He has other bands and goes solo.) Their percussion is insane. They have a large cattaloge to choose from and not all is as discordant as this. (The angry chaos does send a message of its own.)

I think the beauty and real use of songs and art like this is reflected in how much you thought and talked after it. As much as I like other music types; it makes you think and reflect and clearly it did you too!
Doug, you really need to check out a song off of Dissection's "Storm of the Light's Bane" album. It's an absolute masterpiece in the metal genre and one of the best metal albums of all time. The songs Where dead angels lie, and also Thorns of crimson death are my favorites. The whole album has classical elements and just overall amazing from front to back. No filler - all killer.
Thorns of Crimson death is THE masterpiece of that era.

I was surprised about of easy it was for him to tell what Corey was singing as it took me a while and whenever I play Slipknot around my parents and or friends they always say how they don't like it because they cant understand it. I just though that was so cool af

This is actually kind of an anti-war song, opposing the U.S. intervention in the Middle East after 9/11, although some of the lyrics could be interpreted and mirrored for societal narrative.
I don't know that that's the WHOLE song, but I definitely hear the parts that make someone say that.

These 3 bands will make you look at Nu metal with more of a deep understanding of where we are as a cultural. They're all unique in They're on way. I saw them live back in October, and the catharsis was so healing. What an incredible show!
I really like your channel and how you go through the songs and consume them. Now I am not a huge Slipknot fan to be honest, but the 'Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.' album of theirs is one of my all time favourite. They were experimenting with a lot of things, and it really payed off. If you can find the 50-something minutes to squeeze it to your schedule, I would highly recommend you that album. I really think you would enjoy it listening from the beginning to the end.
I laughed when you said the guy with the spikes on his head was going to have a headache. I seen them live here in Las Vegas this year. The amazing thing is they all head bang though each and every song. The dude with the spikes had the spikes going through every single song. They played over an hour. It was an amazing concert.

Also the self titled Slipknot album is a lot different to this one, their best effort in my opinion

A great song to start on a truly unique band, Doug - being also one of the pieces in the soundtrack of the second Punisher movie, if i recall correctly.
However, i'm even more curious about your reaction on "Vermillion" and it's true masterpiece of a video-clip. Vermillion is by far their best creation, in my opinion.

this indistinguishable sound in those frequencies that we can't decipher the pitch is kind of what i really like in metal as a musician. I really enjoy this sensation when the sound remembers me like heavy industry, metal noises, steel and iron being hit by a hammer.
With metal the “noise” is the emotion, the anger, the fed up with the bullshit…but also how we metal heads won’t take it lying down.
As others have said Stone Sour showcases Corey’s vocal talent. One of the few that can belt out guttural anger and then turn to a soft melodic voice. “Through glass” is a great song if you want to give it a listen.

All Hope is Gone came out while I was just starting high school and quite honestly helped me find out who I wanted to be and still am to this day.
It took some time to find my footing with Slipknot … but what a live show … while Stone Sour is my Corey Taylor vehicle of choice(especially for fits of karaoke) …There is so much talent to unwrap … something for future us to deep dive into with new found perspectives of hindsight!

If you find yourself digging into the Knot, I implore you to find some of the deeper cuts. The slow moody stuff. It will send a shiver down your spine.
Hi! As a composer, I would say, when I heard this song, at my prime (20 and such) in the start, we all had some anger problems about the emptiness in society, you know, from the writers perspective. Veganismi and all that. This right here fills the spot. If x marks the spot, then this here, is something we all do. Some good memories around the early, I don't mind. As a old slipknot style fan, frozen 2003, you get you chances to replenish. I didn't, well, hurt myself so bad, if you know where I'm coming from. It's so personal, when you think about melodies and lyrics, at any given moment. The quality, is what keeps us coming back. No harm in, being one of the best songs in metal history.

One of the most satisfying things for me to watch is classical composers reacting to metal. It is like damn they finally get what we are talking about.
would love to hear you comment on any song by Blotted Science's 'The Machinations of Dementia'. They play Instrumental tech metal but they wrote music using the 12 tone system. pretty complex, both musically as rhythmically. The Guitar Player Ron Jarzombek is amazing.
Hope Doug hear you!!!... recommended him same band time ago... also some Spastic ink or Spiral Architect music... crazy stuff and complex as hell...
Blotted Science also wrote a lot of songs to fit with different video clips and it’s pretty interesting. For example they have a song called Cretaceous chasm where it’s written to the scene in King Kong where the giant insects come and start causing havoc haha.

I suggest you listen to "Eyeless" from their first album. You can hear how they changed to a more mainstream pop sound in this. Eyeless embodies what made them so popular to begin with and is pure adrenal and emotion.
It's always awesome to see someone dip their toe into metal and like it metal is everyone. Only if people would give it a shot they wouldn't be let down
