the fact is that the more skilled you are, the more difficult it becomes to make significant progress and see your legitimate flaws as an artist

@@massimilianodelrosso5495Actually yeah, that’s exactly what it is. In video games it always takes way longer to level up at 50 then 1, or 100 then 50. So if you apply it to art it’s very similar.

there's also, at least for me, the feeling that (the more skilled I become or the more knowledge I study) my art is improving slower than I thought, like I know for example perspective and composition on a theorical level, but my skills don't match that in fact backgrounds are something that I really struggle with

    • @3hxde
      @3hxde ปีที่แล้ว +18

@@NoxilNobody personally i don’t think looking at it as “I’m not improving as much as I should be” and more just that, you are starting to get to the point of your style. There is just critiques that you have that you can fix by focusing harder on fixing them. Like for example your backgrounds, I suggest focusing on learning perspective backgrounds, and purely practicing backgrounds for at least a little while. You will notice a significant improvement in your art, this is exactly what I did and I become so much better at backgrounds. I’m still not perfect at them, samdoesart is MUCH better than me, but he has also been doing them for wayy longer than I have. I only just recently started detailed backgrounds with perspective around last year sometime. But yeah, just the fact I studied it so much, and actually put in the effort to get better, I became a lot better at backgrounds and definitely “leveled up” a lot when it comes to art.

I happened to watch this video right after I just finished a digital redraw from a sketchbook drawing 2 years ago-
I'd been feeling really unmotivated to draw literally anything and was envying my past self's drive to pump out art in my sketchbooks, so I decided to try and get myself out of it by drawing one of the drawings I still loved the concept of, but just didn't really know how to actually execute it. Comparing the two side by side made me feel really accomplished and see how far I've really come, even in smaller, specific things like linework or how I draw hair now.
Anyways thank you so much for this video, it helped me build some confidence, along with realizing that a part of a piece that I still really like from years ago could also mean something I've been holding off on- thanks Sam, you're the best kind of teacher for art babies like me XD

Absolutely loved this video!! It helped me to reflect while watching (and analyzing) my old renders (even if they are 2 yo they suck to my new standards 😂😂) and appreciate my art a bit more ❤️ and died laughing too!! I’m fairly new to your channel, only watched your shorts, but I think I’m staying here 💜

Intuos for me too, plus iPad Pro. For drawing lines at tough angles, canvas rotation is a must.

I used to have a simple wacom bamboo, the oldie, to draw digitally with but after around 8 years with it, I finally upgraded to screen tablet. It was god-sent buff that made me realize I cannot draw properly c':
but the video made me remember all the old art I did and looking at it now makes me see how much I have improved and how much I still need improving. Thank you for amazing video!

I’m pretty new to drawing and all that and usually just draw in a 6B pencil, I know I’ve done little bits of art since I started school last year, and that this year I have been practicing art way more because I took art classes for this year and I have been seeing small improvements in things like my foregrounds and anatomy, but I can still see multiple mistakes that I just need to work on and hopefully get better in the future. I would just like to say you are one of my reasons to do art as a hobby and I thank you for that because it has opened my mind even further ❤

My old art traumatized me, the fact that I'm so confident on my art before then seeing it now makes remind that I'm so cringe before😅

Art is complex and is like building a skyscrapper and keep making it higher. It is not a simply stacking a concrete you have to add many things

I do in fact draw on an Intuos Pro tablet. I just started drawing digitally a couple of months ago and learning has been tough. That being said, I do the process described on this video but comparing my analogue drawings to the current digital ones. I think I have slightly improved when it comes to choosing color palletes and designing the lighting. I stil feel like an amateur, but comparing my own artwork has helped.
    Incredibly helpful video, as always.

Man, I wish I had a tablet to draw on, everything seems to be more beautiful and alive, I don't know, I love traditional art, I've always done traditional art, but it's hard to make something as beautiful as this. You do something AMAZING every week lmao, i love your art❤

I’m kind of new to this channel but I love the transparency he gives. I’m talking about the “idiot, terrible, disappointment” talk. It’s refreshing to hear this rather than the fake nice (I know it’s his work). I try to do this kind of talk to my past work too.
    Just a great topic! 😎👍🏻
