    Why I have 10000000 layers
    First layer: sketch
Second layer: also sketch, but I changed something but I don't want to change it on my previous layer because what if the previous sketch is better
Third layer: sketch one details (eyes clothes hair)
*Duplicate all of the sketch layers*
That's to change some stuff and if I need to to go back to the previous sketch
    Layer number idk:
    Line art
Layer number after idk: line art but maybe better
Next layer: line art of the eyes and face
Next layer: thickening line art in places where it needs
    Layer under sketch" primary color
More Layers on top of that layer for each color
Then in between each of those layers you also shade each color
    150 layers for eyes
    256 layers for background
1 empty layer, but I am not sure if it's empty do I don't delet it just in case
24 layers of additional layers with multiple Blanding mode
    10 layers for overlay highlights
And 1 layer for my signature
Edit: Yes I do merge some layers, and yes I use folders
On average I have 20-30 layers
No I am not saying it to "brag" about my layer count. Sam just asked how do people have a lot of layers and I answered with obvious exaggeration👍

Timestamp 3:35 yes, my art style has changed over the years a lot. First it was kinda like Tom and Jerry's art style, then I got into anime so I went for a shojo anime style, and then that evolved into my current style which is sort of Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess + Ghibli backgrounds + Black Butler + Okami + the more realistic Final Fantasy games + From Software. (Basically a Japanese video game art style in which I can vary the level of realism, usually is not cel shaded, and I have a lot of options for depicting lighting and weather conditions.)

here’s an actual art tip i used for improving; in expressions, the like bottom line of the eye will curve according to expressions. if it stays the same it makes the expressions look dull and robot like. (google references) it’s a mistake i see people make a lot and ur art can look kind of off putting if u don’t.

Here’s my tips for finding your art style.
Sometimes it’s not going to come out as you want it to be, but it will be yours. An art style chooses you. Draw things the way you find the more fun, or the way that is most comfortable for you. Over time once you’ve customized every human feature to you, it will turn out to be an art style, yes you do have some say in it but it will never be your exact vision. It takes time, just know that you can’t decide when your style is set, it will happen over time.

    How I use 100+ layers:
Sketch folder: 3 to 10 layers for the sketch
1 layer clipping on the folder of sketches to give a color (I usually sketch with black, but I see a lot of artists sketch with a color that's not black)
    Lineart folder: around 10 layers
The same number of layers to color the lineart
Color folder: a layer for every color that is in the drawing
1 to 12 clipping layers to shade these colors
Background folder: lineart and/or colors 5 to 18 layers

I can totally agree with Sam when he talked about how your artstyle would keep changing and improving, I've continously practiced digitally and traditionally and I always changed the way I draw noses, eyes, hair. A few weeks ago I wouldn't have been able to draw 2 eyes that doesn't look wonky, and the eyes I drew now are what I actually was aiming for. My artstyle just keeps changing but that doesn't mean I'm not improving (I sometimes think that ahhhh) I just kept on practicing but it would be til' I tire myself out (I was always one to work hard til exhaustion) So I'm trying my best not to do that! Sam always have the best tips and I can extremely agree with his words. Work hard and practice but don't do it until you exhaust yourself!

About portfolio advice, as a 3d modeler that uses these character/prop/whatever sheets to make models, one thing that recruiters will notice is consistency between poses on the sheet. It makes one's job so much easier if things are lined up properly and eliminates lots of guesswork. You can find even professional concepts (not bashing anyone, we're all humans with tight deadlines) with things like wristbands suddenly changing sides, clothing that has inconsistent lenghts, borked perspective or things that look cool but don't make sense in 3d space:)

Now that I've finally realized that it's ok to use references and get inspiration form other artists, my art has definitely improved.

Tip at 4:00 helps a lot! I have some different styles that I like to use, and one of these is more sharp and edgy. I found some characters that have a sharp and quick looking style, found their artists, found some tumblr artists I look up to, and now we have pointy hair.

Hey Sam! Can you make a tutorial on how to effectively use references and draw without copying them, or just stylizing them? I wanted to learn how to draw my own image and create my own work, and I really like your art. Thank you!

The second tip reminds me of when I first started taking art more seriously in sixth grade. I used to fold up pieces of printer paper and keep them in my pencil case, and when the teacher was talking I’d bring the paper out and draw a little warrior cat or something on one of the sides. I ended up with multiple sheets of dirty paper, falling apart, absolutely covered in coloured pencil on both sides. I still have a lot of them today! It definitely helped by making art feel accessible- i could draw a whole piece on a bit of paper smaller than my hand and be proud of it. Only problem with that was I got into the habit of drawing veeery small, my sketchbooks from that time were just filled with tiny drawings. It also meant when i tried to draw bigger pictures, I’d realise the anatomy and everything was off, so I’d be too scared to even attempt it. Still, it was an important part of my art journey!

The finding your art style one is so good. I've changed a bunch of things about how I draw over time, and most of those things came from other artists I've seen. Right now I'm experimenting with different kinds of lineart and trying to not run from my responsibilities of drawing humans and doing proper backgrounds.

because i go for a fairly large canvas size, typically an 18' x 24' at 300dpi (Procreate Gang), i cant do more than 17 layers atm but i never really use more than 10 anyways.
    Layer 1- base sketch
layer 2- better version of the base sketch, keeping that sketch fairly loose also makes having to change things less intimidating
layer 3- basically the main color layer
layers 4-10 - anything else that would be a pain to do on the main layer, i.e. highlights, rando objects, background, accessories, testing out theories...
you will have less accidents on fewer layers guys! if yall go outside the lines it can always be fixed no matter how big or small thanks to either covering it up or undo.

I started internally crying when I saw the magic poser Tiktok. I was looking for a specific pose a month ago for a drawing, and I was very desperately looking for websites and apps that could allow me to create or find any pose I'd like, but I never found one so I cancelled that drawing idea. This right here would have helped me so much. At least I know now 😭

I will admit that I'm a baby artist. I've only just started digital and I've been hand drawing for years, but there's things I can't find no matter how I search it, like how some of the artist I like do their rendering, and shading cause I like the realistic anime kind of art, and I really want to draw my OCs like that
