Thank you Willy for acknowledging the Ukranian soldier who was surrendering being led away by a Russian drone and ultiminintly killed by a Ukranian drone operator. This death really hit me hard especially after seeing another video of a Ukranian holding a baby and he got drafted off the street. The man surrendering was so close to surviving the war and his own countryman made sure that would never happen. I feel so bad for the Ukranian men who have no choice but to fight Russia on the front line against their will.

You are wrong with the Russian Victory conditions. As Rusia integrated some Oblasts into Russia proper - WITH THEIR FULL TERRITORY - Russia HAS to fight for it by constitution. Putin is not allowed to declare a victory while parts of Russia proper are occupied, and he has not "freed" (from the Russian point) those oblasts totally. This is not even a PR thing - it is a constitutional obligation by now. This would be a VERY hard sell to make a constitutional change here. You say occupying anything would be a win - no, not by constitutional obligations. Russia has itself in a corner there.
I have seen plenty of evidence that Russia is winning - Ukraine run out of troops, Clausewitz doctrine from Russia. If Russia would have some serious trouble somewhere in the supply chain - humans and material - we could talk, but right now it looks like it is a game of waiting (months MAYBE) until the Ukrainian frontline breaks, and Russia is prepared for that.

There is this famous Machiavelli's quote that says: "If you have an army that's completely reliant on somebody else, you don't actually have an army."
    *
Most of Western bloggers and journalists still describe this conflict as a Russo - Ukrainian war.
WE need to understand that it is a proxy NATO vs Russian Federation war.
In fact it started in 2014 as a civil war that escalated to a serious regional war with far reaching geopolitical consequences.
As is stands today it is a clash between pseudo democratic, self-righteous, arrogant and self-delusional neo-liberal Collective West - haplessly lead by the American hegemon (Globalists/Deep State/Military-Industrial Complex to be exact) and (Conservative) Eurasian Multipolar heartland powers supported by collective anti-neocolonial Global South.
Corrupt Western media desperately advocates the oxymoronic narrative theory that Russia doesn't seek a peaceful solution to the geopolitical crisis in Ukraine.
United States are entitled to proclaim and implement so called "Monroe Doctrine"... other countries are not.
So Putin cynically and treacherously sabotaged Minsk and Istanbul agreements... of course in order to give himself more time to attack The Baltic states, Poland and then continue Russian aggression all the way to Lisabon?
The proxy war in Ukraine is the first time NATO pick a fight with the opponent of a similar(?) strength.
Can't wait to see the result.
    BTW
Paradoxically the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine general Syrskiy is an ethnic Russian (similarly to president Zelenskiy still wrestling with Ukrainian phonetics and grammar) born in the heart of Russia - in a small village Novinki (Vladimir Oblast)

    • @jamesgornall5731
      @jamesgornall5731 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

Very true. They sacked the previous, popular and influential commander of the AFU General Zaluzhnyi (which no doubt came as a relief to the Russians) because he dared to speak truth to those in power in private and then in public, which is about as dictatorial a move as the West claims Russia has been all along. Even Stalin put up with being shouted at drom time to time by Zhukov when Zhukov was correct, (there's archival material to prove that Stalin adopted a much less 'hands-on' approach to military command when the counterattacks following the Battle of Moscow were ripped apart by Germany, whose forces had been ordered to hold at all costs by Hitler, surprising nobody with the order, but surprising everyone probably himself included that this gamble paid off, contributing to his growing belief in his own infallibility, but I digress).
Anyway, Syrski is told what to do and does it in true Soviet doctrinal fashion, having been educated at the Moscow Higher Military Command School. When things became tough to listen to, they replaced the talented and Ukrainian-educated Zaluzhnyi with a man from the old guard more suited to being told what to do and obeyibg without question; but apparently the AFU is not at all like the Russian Armed Forces with its well-publicised but never-evidenced 'meatwave' attacks, and 'out of date', Soviet tactics and strategy. If (when?) there's ever an interview with Syrskyi where he describes himself as 'concerned,' then you'll know that things are in very bad shape indeed.

Perhaps as a new neutral state, perhaps not but we already saw the results of having the nuke plant and Dams able to be hit by missiles or arty. Their may be a 'rump' state near NATO borders that Russia doesn't care about the West can play with (Russia has as much said Poland can occupy parts there) but any parts with a significant Russian minority will not be trusted under the control of NATO and the West. There's more unexplained wealth locked up in Siberian permafrost than anything the Donbas region could supply. Russia doesn't want to become surrounded by a hostile military alliance, when it has been in the past things haven't worked out well for their interests. People need to understand that if you're incorporating Ukraine into NATO, you're effectively giving them access to a huge nuclear deterrent, not an independent deterrent but as an explicit part of the deal. I don't know what could be more alarming to a nation which has to defend such an enormous land border and has repeatedly suffered devastating attacks from that direction, than to be told that their southern Naval fleet base is to be disconnected and incorporated into NATO, they'd have to have a complete stooge at the helm not to see it and do something about it. Ukrainian neutrality has been demanded, and ignored, repeatedly until something was done about the situation.

Yeah, that is why Kremlin emptied not just Kaliningrad and the Finnish border of defence forces AFTER Finland joined NATO, but Murmansk oblast as well..... which holds the strategic submarine bases and therefore is the absolute corner stone in Russia's nuclear deterrence as without submarines, they make themselves vulnerable against a first strike.
Kremlin ergo *never* saw NATO as a threat... and when that claim is a proven lie, all the rest goes with it...
The war isn't about land, it is about Kremlin dominance over their neighbours.

Energy transmission damage is not easy, cheap to repair, it really is unbelievable to think that they're not thinking about the situation after the war. Our entire modern civilisation runs on electricity. If I were Russia, now that Ukraine's S300 systems are toast, I'd think about doubling down on damaging that transmission grid, the USA would've done this on day 1, as happened in Iraq, and Iraq wasnt nearly as reliant on electricity transmission in 1991 as Ukraine in 2022-2024. It's a horrible thought, but the thought of the capital, the West of Ukraine as a whole, losing this is one thing that can strangle the country into surrender. If the North of England was attacked, those wankers in London wouldnt care but if their Oyster cards didnt work one morning and they couldnt get to work at whatever nonsense jobs Londoners have, that might give them some pause, thinking, "we're in London, why do we care about Newcastle, we can barely understand anything that Geordies say in the first place?" Its a good way of getting people to ask, not without good cause, "What is Ukraine, we speak different languages between East and West, have quite different histories for the most part, why do we suffer for the ingrates in Crimea when they say they are Russian, cheered when Russia annexed them and told us to piss off ever since." Its far more profound a difference than people of even the reddest of the red states in the USA finding little in common with the people in San Fransisco, for example. Attacking the West's energy matrix brings the war home immediately, when the heating goes off in December and people have to start burning wood, using propane heaters in blocks of flats, when they can't fill cars because the electric petrol pumps go offline and couldnt pay for it because electronic payment systems go down with it. A country can withstand only so much damage to energy transmission before the grid operators and power stations themselves are forced to cut off or have the remainder of the system shut itself off at enormous cost and with no chance of resuming in the immediate future. It's not as easy as simply switching on the kitchen lights, to paraphrase John Hammond in Jurassic Park.

all power grids and power plants in Ukraine were built under the USSR and with greater resilience in the event of war. That is why, despite Russia's strikes, Ukraine still has electricity. The essence of a good plan is not having one thing work in one place, but to make a situation where any of a dozen places can fail ALL of which cause a disaster for the enemy. And if they manage to make the fronts pause that just means more UKR troops exposed under the guns. And at any time Russia can advance on a new front at no risk and require an emergency redeployment of men from the other fronts, making them weaker and liable to be broken.

Yup, when it comes to attritional warfare people aren't always that clued up.
You'll find countless WW2 documentaries about German tactics or "shock and awe" tactics during Desert Storm, but very little on Soviet tactics during WW2 (at best they'll try and project and talk about "deep battle" that resembles armor penetrating deep into the enemy's rear, which was partly what they did but that overlooks the attritional part of their tactics and the use of numbers over a wide front) or Chinese tactics during the Korean war (they talk about "human waves", but that is simplifying it way too much and pretty much Western propaganda to some degree).
Or hell, do some reading on attritional warfare during WW1. Pretty much consisted completely of it.
And don't sell the maneuver aspect short either. Hell, you can go as far back as Alexander the Great at the battle of Gaugamela. Where he moved his cavalry before the battle even really took off, forcing the enemy to try and match his movements and in doing so they had to adjust their frontline, but it then in turn left their frontline "weakened" and disorderly. Which opened them up for an attack at that weak point. So, this tactic of doing probing attacks to make your enemy move and reveal a weak point, goes almost as far back as warfare goes and we have written records.

  • @GeoffDemarest

I don't think any side will be able to declare victory. Ukraine's goal is to recover 100% of its original territory, including Crimea. That will be impossible, I think. The priority goal of Russia is to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. That unofficially has already happened. It will also happen officially as soon as peace is reached.
