Battle of Sievierodonetsk - Animated Analysis

- In the late Spring of 2022, Russian forces who retreated from northern Ukraine after failure to take the capital, Kyiv, shift their focus to the eastern part of the country, Donbas. Here, since 2014, parts of Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions have been occupied by Russian proxy states, LPR and DPR. On the border with them, Ukraine has some of its most capable troops, well dug in and reinforced prior to the invasion, as limited advance in Donbas was seen as one of the alternatives to what actually happened, full-scale war. After the redeployment of troops which failed to take Kyiv to eastern Ukraine, new Russia's strategy is to encircle Ukrainian forces on the east, destroying them once and for all, and annex the entire Donetsk and Luhansk regions which will open the road to further conquest of central Ukraine. Even more ambitious plans circulate with a commander of Russia's Central Military District, Rustam Minnekayev, declaring that the aim of the "second phase" of the so-called Special Military Operation is to fully seize Donbas and Southern Ukraine, establishing a land corridor with Transnistria. On April 10th, Russian army general Aleksandr Dvornikov is appointed as a commander of all military operations in Ukraine. Move that further emphasizes the Russian plans to shrug off defeats of the past and regain momentum. Completely ignoring the enemy’s capabilities and how well-fortified and urbanized Donbas actually is, the Russians decide to attack in the direction of key cities of Sloviyansk and Kramatorsk, focusing their efforts on Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk first.

Your videos are unmatched! Always top notch.
The video is great but some of the info is incorrect.
79th did not return to the rear to replenish. They sat in exposed trenches on a hillside outside Grigorivka eating artillery and sustaing heavy casualties through the end of July before moving to the rear. They didn't move to the rear in June as the video states. How do I know? I was there with the 1st International Company Ivan Bohun Brigade and we supported them and stopped the Russian advance on Grigorivka and lost several men July 18th and it was 79th brigade that we spoke to and helped.
Thank you for the valuable correction! There is much more information about the battle itself than about the aftermath, so some of my assumptions indeed might be incorrect. I also did not mean to say that 79th was withdrawn completely in June, but rather sometime after the battle. That's why the icon stays on the map around 29:18. But still, I appreciate such details and we will try to avoid such ambiguities in the future.
So only use pro russian talking points? Weird @@bhaashatepe5234
from there we can see this is a western propaganda
and you haven't upload a single video about fall of avdiivka
This is so great I wish they showed all this level of detail in real time. Don't get me wrong, there are sites with interactive maps and up-to-date information, I'd just like provided analysis by video developers than having to read it. It just hits differently.
@J74556 Yeh it'd be nice. I watched the boys from 79th sit in an exposed trench and eat arty day in and day out. We did as well. The estimated daily arty average was 500 shells per day over the course of July to Hrihorivka
The way Russia conducted its initial invasion of Northern Ukraine had to be some of the worst strategic planning I'd ever seen.
Overconfidence, Corruption, Inexperience and failure to have a plan B screwed Russia from the get go
Nothing like several kilometer long convoys that are standing still lol.
Thats good
Didn’t expect the war to go the way it’s going at all, thought they was gonna roll through with tanks and stop at local stations for refueling and food. When that didn’t happened and the Ukrainians fought back, that shit turned into a quagmire real quick, in the north at least. But the Russia today is not the Russia that started this war.
You should see the Mykolaiv campaign too. The Russian be drawing random line on the map.
It’s crazy how much the tactics have changed since 2022. At this time I didn’t see any FPV drones or gps guided bomb now it’s multiple videos a day of each.
You don't see much use of any gps guided bombs because it's jammed by the Russians... the Russians however use laser guided bombs
Can you battle for Chernihiv or Vuhledar? Both of them should be some of the biggest tank battles of the war.
Can't say for sure when we will get to these, but they are on the list.
" tank battle " is a misnomer
Vuhledar = graveyard of russian marines
@whats is krinky then ?dv2045
@nicolasgingras9277 A graveyard for Russian conscripts lmao
Ukraine has an advantage in fires over the river and casualties on the Russian side have been horrendous
I like this detailed way of analysis. Unfortunately, however, some bias is clear which makes me take every piece of information mentioned here with a pinch of salt
id agree, definitely some nuance needed towards the “friekorps volunteers”. dodgy guys, with parasitic views
@nathanlafferty1309 yeah like I understand people have political opinions and all but you are giving information here try to be objective
Can you give an example of this bias harming his analysis?
@@LunaticTheCat a lot of "Russians killing civilians and only advancing after taking heavy casualties" type of nonsense

Can you please make a video on the battle of Avdiivka? I'd love to see an indepth analysis on the battle in your video style. Your content is awesome! ❤
With the benefit of hindsight, it becomes clear that the decision to defend Sievierodonetsk was mostly motivated by politics rather than military sense. If they had given the defense of the city on the wrong side of the river, maybe the could hold the front on the Siversky Donets and manage to defend Popasna, at least for more time.
The fact is, they did regain initiative, Russia losses were enourmous and the coming Offensive gained territory Russians are still fighting for till this day.
Fog of war is thick. When enemies are advancing everywhere holding key political posisions is a sound strategy as if you lose all of them your country doesnt exist anymore. Endless retreats will demoralize your troops.
Can anyone link any sources with more detail on the Popasna front? I remember it happening so fast at the time, that bulge just kept getting bigger and bigger. I'd love to learn more on what exactly happened. When Popasna fell, it really felt like the beginning of the end for Sievierodonetsk at the time.
The decision to continually reinforce Sievierodonetsk was very foolish and dictated by political considerations rather than logic. Any sustained Russian advance within the city would result in the defending forces abandoning most of their heavy weapons and vehicles, then withdrawing under pressure across a river with no bridges. What actually happened was even worse, as both Sievierodonetsk AND Lysychansk were threatened with encirclement from the south and had to be evacuated in a haphazard withdrawal along dirt backroads.
At any time, they could have pulled back across the river to anchor the eastern flank and redeployed these battalions south to keep the lines of communication open. But chose not to.

Thank you so much!
It's great to have such in-depth battle analyses.
Thanks for making this video you did a great job!
It's great material, you've had to put a lot of work into it. Not sure if it's done by 1 person, but quality suggests it took whole team to prepare such great video. Great job
great vid mate
wonderful video. however, the north of the Lugansk region is not Donbass. he belongs to the Slobozhanshchina. Unfortunately, few people know this even here in Ukraine
Insight into this horrific war that you provide is enlightening. Thanks!
I love these videos so much, they are so good. Really informative
Love your vids. Quality is really improving with each video, especially when knowing just how unpopular some battles are...
Amazing video as always!

This channel is such an incredible resource. Thank you for the work you do analyzing these historic modern-day battles.
Your channels is one of the channels covering the war that I am personally archiving, so that your work and analysis will live om if TH-cam/When takes them down (since who knows what TH-cam will look like 30, 40, 50 years from now).

Id suggest you to be carefull with statements like this, leaving Russia is not as easy as it was
@@Hollo0w Believe me, I have lived in Russia all my life, and for more than two years since the beginning of the war I have been declaring my views. Now the main thing is not to go out with this, and not to express it in outside chats where there are a lot of people. Although I even did that. The Russian authorities are carrying out targeted repressions, and in order to get under them, you need either to express your views on the square, or for someone to write a denunciation against you. As long as God had mercy on me. But on the Russian social network, I blocked the viewing of my page, and deleted from friends all those who do not have the same views as me.

Nice
It’s honestly pretty shocking how incompetent and ineffective the overall Russian military turned out to be. Ukraine has fought bravely and with great skill. But still the fact that Russia initiated this premeditated invasion and failed so hard.
was surprised you hadn't covered bakhmut yet tbh
GOOOD
thank you for video about my city
We are truly sorry about what happened to your city
Worth mentioning Russians during this phase of the war were firing 15-20 artillery rounds per 1 round they were getting in return to compensate for their extended front
Each Russian gain seems to leave it more exhausted.
Can you make video on recent attack on kharkiv?
the battle are still ongoing so it doesnt make sense
Do battle of bakhmut next
I love these analysis, but it would be good to review russian victories like avdiivka and bakhmut, i dont like the ukrainian bias and i believe any victory from any side is worth investigating to learn from it
Russia won Bakhmut so hard the victors rebelled against Moscow.

Very important
The mix between nato and hoi4 symbology made me do a spit take. Out fucking standing.
This war has been an absolute tragedy but it gives me some satisfaction to imagine these overconfident, incompetent, corrupt Russian officers having to report to Putin why everything they attempted in 2022 was either a failure or fell significantly short of expectations.
Hi Show. This is becoming After School Cartoons for us adults. Just wish it was Fiction.
at 2:25 did they arrest him ?
No, from the very start of the battles for the city, he was with russian troops and assisted them.
Looking today at those areas through Google Maps still shows a complete destruction. Terrible...
UA really gave RU a good fight.
Bakhmuth is the next?
For the algoritm
It's amazing that Russia constantly loses throughout this battle, and yet they win.
We call it "meat storm"
Их позорное наступление и наше героическое отступление.Пора бы привыкнуть.
@@invit87Your the type to believe russia uses soviet meat assault tactics
To win a battle into a city, you need at least 5/1 advantage. The russians somehow are doing the job successfully, with or without big losses. But my question is: is Ukraine able to get such an advantage to win those territories back? So far, the couter offensives are a big fail.
No doubt the loses on Russian side were bloody but they don't care.
@@ThangTran-bj4we Yeah Ukrainians lost more than Russians because Russia had many advantages
@@DrLsuBoyMatt citation needed
@@DrLsuBoyMatt Advantages are nothing when tossed away.
There's pictures of empty fields completely cratered because Russian artillery bombarded nothing for hours. A 10:1 artillery advantage spent on turning the fields into Moon's surface.
I think the only chance for a ukranian victory, is to make the war last so long and cost so much, that Russian high command decides its not worth it.
Wether that will happen or not is difficult to know for sure.
Its worth keeping in mind, that because Russia is essentially an empire built around the Putin regime the decision to pull out is not necesarily made based on wether or not its tactically the sound move, but wether or not the regime can survive the blowback.
i see what happened in karkive the Russians took lots of causalities trying to cross the Sievierodonetsk river and over time it added up and Ukraine was able to counter attack after they exhausted / inflicted lots of causalities on Russian forces and Ukraine was anble to take back the Lyman/ karkive sector
Can you please tell me who is winning the war after ten years 🙏🏻
The only LEGION in Severodonetsk was the International legion of GUR.
There's numerous videos of the DIU Legion fighting in Severodonetsk, that's where Chubashev (Recruit) died.
God bless War Archive 🙏
Why did they need to build a pontoon bridge first to cross the river, when the Donets is only 2,5 meters deep on average? Is there a reason why the russians not just established a bridge head by crossing the river in BTRs, MT-LBs, BMPs, and drive tanks on the riverbed with snorkels before building a bridge for supplies to cross?
