How to Roll Back The Fallout 4 Next Gen Update and FIX YOUR MODS!! (READ DESCRIPTION) Steam ONLY

- The Fallout 4 Next Gen Update unfortunately destroyed a LOT of load orders today. For Xbox players, I'm sorry, there is currently no known fix :( if you play Fallout 4 on Steam, there is absolutely a way to roll back to the previous version of Fallout 4, Fallout 4 1.10.163, through using the Steam Console. This video aims to teach, as simply as possible, how to do exactly that, remove the Fallout 4 Next Gen Update, and restore your Fallout 4 mods!
The reason you might want to do this is because a lot of Mods need Fallout 4 Script Extender to function, and Fallout 4 Script Extender needs to be updated to work with the current version of Fallout 4. As of right now, the update has broken a lot of F4SE's current functions and a lot of native coding used by other mods. This isn't an issue if you roll back to Fallout 4 1.10.163, as that version has been out for years at this point. Finally, something that JUST WORKS.
There are thousands of mods that rely on this as prerequisite to work properly, everything from Extended Dialogue interface to mods like Fallout London or Fallout: Cascadia need Fallout 4 Script Extender to work properly. Fallout 4 Next Gen Update completely destroys this plugin, and will not work with your Fallout 4 install until F4SE is updated. According to the F4SE team, they're unsure of how long this will take since the Fallout 4 Next Gen Update breaks a lot of things in it
This tutorial will show you not only how to Roll back the Fallout 4 Next Gen Update, but how to use Steam Console to download depots, and apply those in order to play an older version of any game on steam's platform.

- If you receive a license error, it is because you do not own the season pass. Steam will not allow you to download something you do not own, though they could certainly do better with the explanation in this case.
- Some people reported crashing. The best solution we could come up with was because in those cases, the users had been playing Fallout 4 on a language other than English. The depots mentioned here, and in my video, are all for English. You need to find separate depots for other languages, most of which have been posted to the F4SE Nexus page.
- One user adamantly proclaimed that removing the creation club items was the cause of a series of crashes, and placing them back fixed the issue. I troubleshooted this and could not replicate the issue. 1.10.163 did not come with any creations enabled out of the box, only a few archives. I can only assume this was an unrelated issue.
- Occasionally, the download will fail. I recommended that the users change their Steam server for downloading, then fully close Steam and delete the partial download in the 'content' folder, and lastly restart their computer, and try again.

"Missing License error"
- This is for the last 3 depots most likely. If so, that's DLC; just proceed as normal and you'll be fine. If you decide to buy the DLC then you'll have to download the appropriate depots.
"I'm getting an entry point error for F4SE"
- Please verify your Fallout4.exe version (right click, Properties), it SHOULD be 1.10.163. If it is, reinstall F4SE. If it isn't, repeat the process, then reinstall F4SE if the issue persists.
"I have no sound/textures"
- Please verify you've merged the Data folders correctly. This is a very important step that cannot be missed (although really all the steps cannot be missed)
"How do I merge the Data folders?"
- Granted, I sort of glossed over this because it's second nature to me as a modder, but just drag and drop the "Data" folder in ALL the depots onto the "Data" folder in the Fallout 4 directory. If asked to replace anything, replace it.
"I did everything but my game just crashes"
- Did you remember to cut (not copy, not drag, group select and right click for "cut") and paste all the files in the "Data" folder that start with "cc"? These are Creation Club files and cannot co-exist with your downgrade version. They'll just crash your game every time.

1. Navigate to your browser's address bar or Steam's address bar and enter this: "steam://nav/console"

After performing all of these steps and downloading all of the directories, along with cutting and pasting all of the CC content out of the game onto a separate folder, I launched the game only for it to turn to a black screen, which is normal for it to boot up usually, however after a few seconds of thinking the application closes once again. This happens regardless of using the Steam launcher and the F4SE launcher. Any ideas on why that might be? I double and triple checked just in case of any extra CC content but all of it has been removed. Was it possible that I moved a set of files to the incorrect area?
@@trentonmyer1742 Seems to be an issue for a lot of people, try to only cut the CCBG files, keep the other CC files in there

I did even worse, I started a modded playthrough 2 weeks ago, just long enough to get into it. Tried rolling back but had too many issues so my save is basically gone, just means I won’t be playing fallout at all and will switch to a different game, good job Bethesda…

If anyone is having trouble downloading the depots, you may have made the mistake that I did. Be sure to drag each depot out of the original download folder and into the depot folder that you create before you proceed to downloading the next depot. If you don't download and drag them out one at a time, there are a variety of errors that you may see. Also if you start getting any error message when downloading and you're doing them one at a time, be sure to completely close and reopen steam and then open the console again. I found that once an error occurred on download that steam seems to get into a bad state and can't proceed downloading depots until a restart.

I Copied all of them one by one, but let them download all at the same time. Can this be why it failed?
All files were listed nicely in the depot folders tho. I could not see any differences from the video.
I repaired my game and Will try again next week, but i'll download them one by one and hope it works..

Thanks a million man, at first i thought it didn't work for me but played around with my files and found some files in the wrong place and duplicate files where they shouldn't have been. Everything is working 100%. Why Bethesda insists on breaking their own game and the mods people have worked on for years i will never understand.

Didn't work for me
I seem to have fixed my issue that others are having where the game goes to a black screen and immediately crashes. I somehow had created a 'Data' subfolder within the main 'Data' folder with duplicate files. I copied everything relevant from the 'Data' subfolder to the main one (find and replace where needed) then deleted the subfolder. The game then launched for me.

@@SnailOXD Good to see that the crash fix is working for some others as well. I'm not sure how I managed to create that subfolder in the first place, but at least the game is launching now.
I had the same problem. After I copied all of the data from the duplicate folder into the main folder, everything worked fine.

Yeah, that is an unfortunate downside for many who have purchased CC content, but it's just part of the trade off for playing with mods. In any case I'm happy you've got your mods working again! Thank you for the sub!
You can find the CC files online and paste them into the folder like mods and it'll work

Holy hell, thank you so much. I recently downloaded an absolute fuck ton of mods and since the update dropped right as I wanted to play I foamed at the mouth for 4 days wanting to play Fallout 4 but couldn't. Great tutorial!

@@app_manifestation I’m sorry i just saw this. so I actually figured out that my steam glitched out and had paused the download, so I had to restart all of it. It didn’t take that long for me the second time, but I’ve heard it’s possible it can take awhile!
Followed everything exactly as described. Black screen that crashes when I launch F4SE. Double, triple and quadruple checked that all CC files are gone, no extra data folders etc. Reinstalled F4SE, all versions of the game / F4SE are correct. Cant figure out why it crashes immediately.

Sounds like a PICNIC problem.
At this point only things I can suggest are sort load order if you have mods and get your crash logs from buffout 4

Yep! So you have to drag the data folders from your Depots, hover them over the Data folder in the Fallout 4 folder, and this will merge them. The contents of the depot data folders will replace the contents of the Fallout 4 data folder. Make sure if you are prompted to replace any files that you do so

@@Project-Taco I didn't have to do anything special with vortex before using the method, I was very lucky to not have any problems at all, to be honest.
However if that's a precaution you want to take, feel free, I just won't be able to advise what the side effect might be, if any.

Like most people i downloaded the game lately but with a slightly different thought "hmmm i remember that the nexus has been on a purge of mods due to some controversy and ive noticed lots of mods going byebye, ill download it all and store the game and mods on a external drive for future me" then i got hooked. I DIDNT EVEN KNOW OF THE DAMN TV SHOW! And the second day i got all 400+ mods running the game was broken. Life saver, i rarely like videos but you sir got my like.

In my case those last files were for the DLC's so i did not need them.

Game won't load. You weren't descriptive enough when transferring folders. You stated that the "last 3 depots have data folder. move these data folders to data." There's more than 3 depot folders with Data folders.
Did you move all of them or just the last 3. Because if you move all of them it won't work. Just follow the video step by step don't deviate.
I thought the process of moving the folders was intuitive enough, so that's on me. But yes you need to move all data folders and merge them. These are the crucial folders needed for the game

Just to confirm… Only the last 3 data folders (depot folders with only data folders within them) should be moved into the steam apps/common/Fallout 4/Data folder?
The rest of the Data folders within the depot folders should just be plopped into steam apps/common/Fallout ?

I’m still confused about if I should’ve moved all of the depot Data folders into the game Data folders.

The data folders are being merged there. You'll just need to drag and hover them over the data folder, then drop it. It should ask if you'd like to replace anything
everytime i download depot 377160 377163 5819088023757897745 this comes up, CAPIJobRequestUserStats - Server response failed 2, and the folder only contains 2 files instead of all the files the are supposed to come with it

The best way to do the down patch, is to do a clean install of Fallout 4. Delete all files from your Fallout4 directory. Reinstall Fallout 4 then download the depots. After that Install Fallout 4 Script Extender. That is what worked best for me.
Also another great option, this video was merely to teach those unfamiliar with the depot process how to do it
Any idea on how to change the fallout4.exe file to a version that matches f4se? Every time I try to launch it, it prompts with incompatible f4se version.

@@SnailOXD yeah I did that unfortunately. Full new install of the game/f4se. As well as following the vid closely. Despite all of that my fallout4.exe file is still the new updated version. Tod has really blown it this time lmao

THANK YOU SO MUCH personally I enjoy vanilla playthroughs and have f4se installed solely for the High FPS Physics Fix mod. I tried to play with the update but the waiting times each time I loaded the Commonwealth were unbearing. I hope f4se eventually releases a patch but for now your fix has done wonders! Thanks for the video, I literally just went from utterly hopeless to hopeful after watching two of your videos back to back, I got a question though, I know the new update broke all mods but @01:02 what mod are you using which allows you to pull on the leg of a raider and flip them onto it's back?
I'm very happy you asked! It's called "Simple Grabs", I installed it for my Bus Driver video for use with Megan, since she's a mercenary, and I had a plan to make some videos of her doing Metal Gear Solid type stuff; that mod was a simple and effective way to work CQC throws into the game

Same, it didn't work for me the first time. I run my F4SE from MO2, when I tried to run it the first time I DL'd what I needed and copied/pasted/deleted the CC content, a console would open up for not even a split second, the screen would flicker, and nothing would happen - nothing would open. I scrolled the comments section here, found your post, and figured I'd do what you did - it worked. I'm back to playing my modded FO4 now. Thanks @boraf11 and @SnailOXD.

Looks like it worked! I'm not sure if it's mentioned either anywhere in the video or somewhere in the comments, but from what I hear you'll still want to make sure that the game is set to "only update upon launch" within Steam, and that you make sure to continue to only launch through F4SE to stop FO4 from updating again.

Hi, so i was following the video and isaw that you dragged over the data folders into the fallout 4 directory insead of its data folder so I did the same. Is that okay or will i have to do this process over again?
(Edit) I didnt explain this well. when i open f4se everything loads up propely, but when i start a new game it loads for a little bit but then the loading image in the bottom right corner goes away but im left with a black screen and cann only open up the f4se command console. Is this a problem with my mods or is this a problem with how i did the data folder move?
I went to the nexus and followed the instructions there, but it didn't say to remove the creation club stuff, now i have and my game works again! Super thanks!!

I DID over look that not copy paste on the cc at first then i did the cut copy and that got to pass to start the game
now i have to go back in the pain in the ass of redownload all the models i lost before i seen this

Try launching in offline mode
same, but offline mode doesn't work
Sort by date to look for the added CC files it helped me identify anything new installed on the day I updated.

So i used this and it worked! But I didnt have to cut the CC files. When I did my game would just crash without even launching. With the CC files, I am able to play with all my mods in perfect working condition, do you have an idea why this is?

I have been in offline mode since before the update even dropped, but I went online for a minute to update another game and remove stuff from my wishlist which apparently was a big mistake. The update downloaded even though I put it last on my download queue (and also to only update on launch). I hate how the updates are forced on you, like let me play with my mods ffs
Did steam force open fallout 4 for anyone else? I was in the middle of playing a non steam game and the game just opened to the launcher for no reason forcing the update through

i've downloaded up to the 5th one down and the next one say "missing license for depots 435870" as i dont own the dlc i would imagine that is why i get this error, do i need these depots if i only have the base game?

My heart was stopped, but after this one started right back again.
This was a lifesaver. My game updated WITHOUT STEAM EVEN RUNNING. I had it set to install on launch and only ever used the F4SE and it still updated...
Believe it or not this is actually pretty common, which I don't understand at all. It's sort of nefarious that steam doesn't give you the option to simply not update, but hey I guess this is the whole "you don't own your games" thing

Can you pull crash logs from Buffout 4? If you don't have it, install it and see what happens.
Try to launch without mods as well. Failing that, sort load order with LOOT to see if there are any issues
Buddy, you're ace. After somehow duplicating a sub data folder in my data folder and having to delete it. Bada bing, bada boom, Mods, mods everywhere. Awesome vid was so easy to understand.
