Fantastic special effects by Ray Harryhausen and exciting mythological adventure make this a film that is fun for everyone. It's the story of Jason (Todd Armstrong), a fearless sailor and explorer, who returns to the kingdom of Thessaly after a 20-year voyage to make his rightful claim to the throne. But to do so, Jason must first find the magical Golden Fleece. He selects a crew and with the help of Hera, Queen of the Gods, sets sail in search of the Fleece. Jason and his crew must overcome incredible obstacles including a 100-foot bronze giant, the venomous Hydraa huge creature with the heads of seven snakes, and a spectacular battle with an army of skeletons.

The creepies thing about Talos is his complete silence combined with the noise of his rusting bronze. The first time when he moves his head and looks down on them is hair rising in a movie screen, because he really looks like watching YOU.
Don't forget the abyssal black eyes
@@geedee1264 No, it is just that Talos used too much eyeliner. Sorry, i couldn't help...
Exactly. AND I had the exquisite pleasure of PERSONALLY telling Ray Harryhausen that at a Philcon.
bronze doesn't rust, this is why we use it for statues ☺
but yes, he sounds like I would imagine what a moving statute would sound like.
the staccato and slight imperfections from the stop motion also help a lot.
@@Dr.W.Krueger Actually it does it, as you prove it yourself, that is why it changes color to dark green, That green is a cover of rust which protects the rest of the statue from rusting. The friction of that rust is what causes the noise Talos make.
In the original ancient Greek Argonautica poem, Talos was a bronze man-sized creature who would heat himself in a fire and then hug his unfortunate victims to a burned death. I guess that would have been a bit gruesome for wholesome family viewing, so the gianr Ray Harryhausen created here is just 'movie gold'. 🎬 👏🏾🌟❤
An 8-foot Talos would have been a non-starter for me. That's barely a bit taller than Andre The Giant.
@@rubenoteiza9261 I agree... this giant Talos is way more awesome.
@@rubenoteiza9261 Bro you don't want to fight either of them.
well in the argonautica talos just hurled boulders at ships. the bit about fire is from something else
A bit of an elaborate way to kill people.
1:32 like the way Talos just appears round the headland like some old man on a stroll out with his dog.
Love those squeeky metal-churning sounds from Talos.
Talos might be the most disturbing antagonist in any film media. The idea of a bronze-skinned automaton giant silently looks at you and stare at you, it brings shivers to your heart. Oh, and that squeaking, rusting sounds he makes!
He looks like Tyrese Gibson 😊😅😂.
IKR!!!!..…. and how Talos can look at you with no eyes... CREEPY!!!....😳😳😳
Movie memories don't come any better than this
*"Against a man of bronze our weapons are useless!"* And yet, they still attack him with spears! Classic movie monster, one of the greats.
Well it was to distract him.
That's the process of insanity.... they know their weapons are useless against a 200+ foot tall bronze statue yet they still used them against it hoping for a different outcome (YEAH SURE!!!)...🤣🤣🤣
This has got to be one my all time favorite movies Talos looks so real I watch it every time it comes on .
Growing up, we watched this movie in the summer down at our local park. Brings back such great memories…loved this movie!
I remember as a kid being terrified of all the creature double feature movies lol! The idea of a bronze robot defending an island can be made to be terrifying, but these old movies are so corny now. Still a classic
This was such a marvelous creation of Ray Harryhausen.....He was ahead of his time and a true master of the arts!!!.
I'm now at that age that I sound like Talos when I get out of my chair.
I also walk like him but the Dr gave me some cream which has taken the swelling down 🙄.
On another note I have loved this film since a young child .
It may not be CGI but it has soul .
ha ha ha, that makes two of us.
Now three
Lol
Hahaha....after 60 we all sound like Talos....
They all are/Do !@@volpeverde6441
Ray Harryhausen was a great animator using stop motion with models he made for his movies. I Love all his films.
I love how Talos does the hand to the throat thing. It's the same thing King Kong did on top of the Empire state building.
Yep that's probably a reference honestly.
This movie brings back awesome memories of my childhood. Sat. Afternoon watching JASON and the Argonauts, and eating grandmas grilled cheese sandwiches. 70s were so awesome
Exactly!
💪👏👏👏
Would love for a studio to do a movie like this again.
Me too 😢😢😢😢😢
I finally found the source of my childhood memory - watching a movie with "a man in the ocean talking to a giant floating doll" whose eyes moved but she didn't !"
I was sure it wasn't a dream, and now I can place it !
My teacher showed this movie in class loved it
Salute to that old actor who acted so actively despite of his age 👏👏👏
He was probably only in his '50s...
That must be Laurence Naismith you typed about, he starred in A Night to Remember - Played the part of Captain Smith (1958) & Sink the Bismarck - Played the First Sea Lord (1960)
Forget the Golden Fleece....think of all the money to be made selling scrap bronze.
Now THAT is a boss fight. This film was incredibly well made, the effects are still deeply disturbing.

@@kainat555 Ah is that you?
Esses efeitos eram muito bem feitos, para a época. A luta contra os esqueletos no outro vídeo é top.
Like David and Giolath and the Rebels vs the Death Stars. A classic story that never goes out of style.
Right...fully agreed
one of the best movies ever made, it never gets old 👍
Some guy "fixed" this scene by speeding up the stop motion so Talos move smoothly. The consensus was "I think you missed the point. Talos is made of metal so he wouldn't move smoothly. Also as a giant, his movements would be slightly exaggerating."
Well it's now 59 years since I first saw this film at the cinema...Thursday, 15th August, 1963. I was 12 and thought that it was the best film I had ever seen. I still love it, watch it over and over, listen to Bernard Herrmann's great score, and read about the film online. There was a genuine bronze model made of Talos of him on his pedestal, but it costs around £2,000. I wouldn't mind a full scale model for my garden! Tom Hanks once gave Ray Harryhausen an award, and said "Forget Citizen Kane. Jason and the Argonauts is the best film ever made". OK, don't want to offend Kane lovers, but that film didn't have a giant bronze statue stonking about. Or seven skeletons on the warpath. ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ☠ ⚔ 🛡

I guess that would have been a bit gruesome for wholesome family viewing, so the gianr Ray Harryhausen created here is just 'movie gold'. 🎬 👏🏾🌟❤
Timeless classic from a great decade.
It was an honour to watch this film on the big screen with John Cairney (who played Hylas) in the audience, for its 55th Anniversary screening in 2018.
Oh man that would be great to see on the big screen!
Oh wow how cool!
I believe he’s the last surviving cast member, shame but that is cool.
@@aaronmoran7195 Gary Raymond (Acaste in the movie) is alive, aged 87.....Nancy Kovak 87 too.
OMG!!!! I remember watching this as a kid. Scared the crap out of me!
Same here that thing was creepy how it was pursuing them and the sound it made
Tell you what, the amount of work that went into this movie is mind blowing. That stop action, the set pieces, everything. Just wow
My father loves this movie. He used to let me watch it with him when I was a little boy. I miss those days.
I almost jumped when the lady statue opens her eyes and whispers.
This film is a masterpiece! Loved it since first seeing it as a child in the 80s.
Man, they had good flicks back then. Even the stop motion animation by Ray H. Added to the effect of a frightening experience.
Note to self: When a friend abandons his spear on the ground in front of a giant falling bronze statue, LEAVE IT BEHIND.
Jason is lucky he didn’t get boiled by that molten liquid gushing out of Talos’ ankle valve.
Ikr, and I think that’s what was making Talos stay alive. Once Jason removed that thing on the back of Talos ankle, he then died.
It sure was lucky for Jason that the one spot Talos was vulnerable also happened to be the only part of him the Argonauts could reach.
And a rubber stopper at that!
His Achilles heel
0:09 That figurehead coming to life and talking is creepy.
Yeah and the head was way bigger than it appeared on the ship, who was she supposed to be, don't remember?
@@myobmyob2215Pallas Athena designed the ship. Concerning the gigure at the prow:
"The most impact aspect of the construction of the new ship though, was the fact that part of the prow of the vessel was made from oak taken from the forest of Dodona.
Dodona was a sacred area in Ancient Greece, a region heavily linked with the god Zeus and prophecy, and the Oracle of Dodona was considered second only to the Oracle of Delphi in the ancient world. Thus, using oak from the sacred forests imbued the vessel with mystical powers, and the ship was said to be able to speak, and to offer up prophecies of its own."
Thanks for uploading this! Such a classic!! This and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad are awesome!
So, so good. Wonderful memories of Saturday mornings at the ABC cinema in the early 1970`s. A masterpiece.
In the actual mythology they faced Talos on the way BACK from getting the fleece, he was also 8 feet tall and was actually defeated by Medea with her magic. Jason also abandoned her soon after and was punished by the gods severely.
Yes. True
Medea defeated Talos by removing the screws from his ankle and left that poor "robot" to die.

@@simonjackson7206 Palinuro and Marina di Camerota in southern Italy. The sea is still spotless, but there's been quite a bit of construction on land compared to when the movie was shot.
I love the faces Jason pulls when he's trying to get the seal off of Talos's ankle, the actor really put his all into it LOL
The ol' Achilles heel injury will get ya every time.
Todd Armstrong is perfect! Dashing and heroic, he is the ideal choice. But what I didn’t know was that he and his costar Nancy Kovack, both American, were dubbed by other actors Tim Turner and even Haddon because their accents jarred with a mainly British cast. Crazy! Did you know that?
Yes. I've known this for some time. 👍😉

Ray Harryhausen was a FRIGGING GENIUS !!!
When we are kids we thought this is real 😂😂😂
Ray Harryhousen said ya spend yesrs trying to get the animation as smooth as ya can. Here he had to remember how to make it stiff again 😂
I didn't know Gary Raymond was in this! I remember him as Sgt. Moffitt from "The Rat Patrol."
How fortunate for them that Talos' vulnerability wasn't at his ears lol
the Talos bronze giant statue was a cool mythological creature. but it's a little shame he doesn't feel enough smart in this movie. by example he only do one iron gladius blow, he barely moves, even when jason take the opening on his heel... i would have loved to see a little more combativity from him. but i guess we can't have everything. the statue still have a chilling and terrfying aspect however, with the weird sounds he make when he moves , like if he's made of rusted iron and while we though he couldnt have a voice , he still scream when he loose his blood from his heel

He, is more like a golem, no thoughts or feelings, his objective is to kill
And he moaned, choked, cracked, and crumbled like a fallen heroic figure to his ultimate death. Poor Talos. A legendary protector of the Island of Bronze who was no more but a memory in Greek mythology histories.
I could be wrong, but I feel like the real mythological Talos was not this tall, but maybe more like ten foot
@@royalhero4608 8 feet but yes
Dude at the end...RUN SIDEWAYS
I always think that in every horror film along with why dont you turn the light on .
That one dude was in "Rat Patrol"
All because of tragic hero Hercules. His notable lack of self-control causes people their lives and he carries the guilt in his labors.
Talos looked like he was larger standing over the rocks and lifting the ship than when he first moved and got up.
Remember The Legend Of Zelda cartoon dated back in 1989?Armos from "Sing For The Unicorn"were big as Talos than the one in The Legend Of Zelda instruction booklet.
Amazing work and intense climactic drama!
Amazing!
Question: Does anyone think Talos appears bigger in this scene compared to when he first "wakes"?
Yeah, I thought the same thing.
Yes, there appears to be some inconsistency with his size throughout the scenes. Especially when he faces the fleeing ship at the mouth of the bay in the scene right before, he looks exceptionally gigantic.
I Remember My Pop Took Me To The Movies To See This. And Back Then, They Looked So Real On The Big Screen!
Classic film. Amazing.
Classic, one of the best movies ever made!
What always made me shake my head over these scenes in the movie...was why Talos NEVER moved his feet when feeling something touching him at the heel of his left foot...he could have just moved forward or backward...

He's a big dopey statue man, cut him some slack.
perhapd because because he was surprised that somebody knew his weak point
The stop motion might be hard to make so they just left it as that
Now, let's bring on the Harpies!

A coincidence that Talos' weak spot was the ankle, same as Achilles ? Or not ?
What a creativity 👍👍👍
Poor Hylas 😭😭 that was cruel... Hercules, you idiot!! You killed your best friend!!
Love this so much ❤️❤️ The next couple of scenes with Hercules says it all... the head’s down; he’s angry at himself etc, etc... movies are magical 😘😘
To be fair Hylas shouldn’t of gone back for the brooch in the first place. He knew Talos was about to fall and he still went anyway.
@@thegrandpotato6014 i thought it was a spear he went back for..or javelin..
@@paulhoye9680 Yes. It was a Javelin Hylas tried to retrieve for Hercules. Poor guy. He had ample time to escape Talos' fragmenting body parts if it weren't for him looking up at the bronze hero paralyzed in fear. What a horrific way to die.
It was the Gods who decided that Hylas should die. Jason told a saddened Hercules this, who rightly asks: "Why kill a boy for my grave fault?".
Interestingly, the Gods had Hylas' time on Earth marked anyway. During the Olympic Games where Hylas beat Hercules at discus due to brain over brawn, Zeus looks down solemnly and says: "Let Hylas have his moment of triumph... While he may..." My guess is that the Gods are out to punish Hylas for some past event. We know that he is intelligent. Did he, as a mere mortal, outsmart the Gods in the past somehow? Could Hylas have uttered a blasphemy? Were the Gods annoyed or even jealous of his intelligence, were unable to manipulate him, and decided that he's gotta go? Although Hercules was the instigater of events, it wasn't entirely his fault that his young friend had to be killed. It was the Gods making use of the situation.
Kudos to Ray Harryhausen
Oh hey its the monster that'll appear in Dragons Dogma 2...

It's fascinating to think how old these tales are. The ancient Greeks were long before the Myceneans, who came before the classical Greeks. In fact, these legends seem to date from the Bronze Ages, about 4000-2000BC, when there was already long distance sailing and trading, and a somewhat complex society with petty kingdoms ruled by local kings. Temperatures were warmer than now, at least in northern Europe, which was maybe where these people lived, before the climate cooled and they migrated south - see the amazing book, "The Baltic Origins of Homers Epic Tales".
Siempre me ha encantado esta película. La mejor escena es la de los esqueletos luchando con espadas.
