    I saw this in the cinema in 1981. I still recall the dead silence in the audience during this scene. No munching on popcorn, no slurping on drinks - not a single sound anywhere. Everyone was captivated.
    Never experienced such intensity with any other film since.

      She was the first of her kind. A hideous female monster beyond imagining.. who was Sentient, intelligent and skillful. Scary to see a woman in that grotesque role. After all, females are supposed to be loving and submissive. Those were the days.

      Ooh! Harryhausen wouldn't have appreciated that comment! He was adament that if it's done properly there *is* no jittery movement. Obviously he was very precious about his work. Wouldn't you be if you'd worked for an entire year, as he did, making this one scene?

    • @derekmok
      @derekmok 7 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Unfortunately, Ray Harryhausen's perception of jitters may not be as sharp as that of modern filmmakers, who are used to watching 24p, 29.97i, 60p, etc. This is definitely jittery. But to be fair, you can't compare Ray Harryhausen's concept of "jitters" vs. modern viewers who are used to watching super-smooth video games that run at 60fps.

    This original version also emphasizes Perseus' heroism because he is obviously terrified, as anyone in their right mind would be and as we in the audience are, so we can identify with him - but he keeps his cool and uses his wits along with his courage.

    The script originally had Perseus Frisbee his shield toward Medusa and cut her head of that way, but Harry Hamlin who played Perseus vetoed the idea and refused to film the scene unless they changed it to having him behead her with a sword, as that is how the legend states she was killed!

    • @KeldorDAntrell

      I find that difficult to believe. Where you hear that?
      The shield is introduced as having the mirrored finish just for this scene when he needs it to look at Medusa safely. The sword was introduced, in a similar fashion, as a gift from the gods which suggests it would be especially sharp. To do this and then have the shield do the cutting wouldn't make any sense.

      Yep and Medusa was supposed to cut herself with her arrows before each shot from her bow, making them poisonous. Though I believe that may have been filmed and removed at some stage. The original soundtrack was released in it's entirety by Intrada a little while ago. The Medusa piece is not only fully restored, but it is longer in the beginning with an unused piece of music right before she shoots the soldier she petrified. It is a repetitive, jagged, cutting sound...

    This is still my favorite Greek Mythology Movie ever-An absolute masterpiece that the remake can't match. And to be fair, I can understand why the original Medusa put a fear in a lot of young people back then and maybe still has that fear of this lingering. Creepy, frightening and just hideous is what you can describe the 1981 Version of Medusa. But for me, this is seriously my favorite part of the Clash of the Titans that I can watch over and over. Frightening in a good way for me to imagine Perseus ever to be in this situation. Awesome adventure and an awesome adventure for me dating back when I was a kid when I first saw this. Ray Harryhausen(legendary movie creator of modeled monsters)brought Medusa to life for this movie 👍

    Always thought that was a really well-done scene. Pretty chilling. It had the feeling of the remote underworld, the ruins of the temple, then the dark inside with the fire light. The stop motion Medusa was good, and it had some SUSPENSE. It was more than just action on top of action.

    You can feel the tension and anxiety from this scene. The music and the dark atmosphere are everything. Even from Perseus himself. He was sweating like shit when he has to swing his sword for the kill. Even after he defeated Medusa, he still have to catch his breath and composure.
    The remake was more like Perseus showing his rage and unnecessary screams. There's too much flames and no darkness to bring the vibe. There was no tension nor anxiety unlike the original.

    The original was better on how they build her up during the movie (how she got turned into a monster,her powers etc.).Then in her lair there is a very long quiet scene where they are looking for her through the dark hallways of her temple,seeing stone statues of her prior victims.Which builds up the suspense levels,so when that first soldier gets hit with an arrow to the back,it actually scares you.
