    feeling so misunderstood by friends and family, right now. constantly reminding myself that their misunderstanding is not a skill issue on my part, it’s a skill issue on theirs and prioritizing empathy and kindness with the people who do “get it” right now💙

      @AndreaJSeverson  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Their misunderstanding is definitely a them problem, not a you problem. And it's so good that you are able to see that. I'm glad that you're prioritizing empathy and kindness with people who do understand you. This will always be a safe place for anyone who needs a soft place to land and just be for a bit. :)

    Pausing the video… at 18:18. First of all…I’m sending you a big tight snuggly hug! 🤗 This, seeing you teary eyed, is breaking my heart. And at the same time, your words are so brave and so true. The way you describe your anxiety and angst and fear…is so familiar to me. I’m so glad you decided to vlog and felt our support with you this day. Yes, you 100% deserve a better doctor…a doctor that listens and addresses your concerns. There are so many doctors out there like that and you will find one. After Tuesday… I didn’t even go into the office for 3 days. I didn’t want to leave my bubble and both guilt and fear filled me. Guilt that I am a leader and I couldn’t show up for my team, and fear that once I walked outside my door…everything would become real. I’m going to continue the video now, but I want you to know how much your videos (all of your videos) bring me and so many others a sense of comfort and peace, and most importantly…they provide a safe haven. So much love to you girl ❤️🥹

      Thank you so much Amber. Sending you so much love. I know you're feeling the same way as me after Tuesday and it's so hard processing these feelings while living in a conservative state like AZ. I feel like it adds an extra layer of stuff to process. I don't blame you for not going to the office. I was very glad I didn't have to teach on Wednesday. It was so hard going to campus on Thursday. Vlogging and talking to you all has helped so much. :)

    Perimenopause is brutal. Im finally on the other side and it was A LOT. One of the things that really helped was tracking every sungle thing from diet to mood to every physical symptom so that i could have something in my hands to show my doctor.
    This week has been too much! Im not well. As i was seeking escape ocer the weekend, I read The Bookshop of Possibilities. It was such a lovely story. I think i exhaled and relaxed for the first time in days as i was reading so thank you!

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'm definitely in the tracking and researching phase. It's going to take a while to find the right doctor and get in to see them, so I want to have as much data as possible to share with them. And omg, this week has been way too much. I am so unbelievably honored and thrilled that you chose my book to relax to and that it helped so much. Bookshop is such a special book to me, I poured so much of my heart and soul into writing that and I love that it could be such a comfort for you. :)

    You always manage to know EXACTLY what to post right when I'm boarding the same red, double-decker bus 😂 But it's comforting knowing you're not alone no matter how obscure and nuanced that feeling or experience might be.
    Funny, you should mention perimenopause as that's most likely what I've been dealing with this weekend. I'll spare you the gross, intimate details since I don't need the internet gaining blackmail worthy material during my weakest moments lol but the word was thrown around by my family members and I immediately got depressed 😢
    I'll save my more vulnerable thoughts and opinions for our DMs but I wanted to thank you publicly for putting it all out there as you did everything you should do when feeling like this: Talking to someone (us), doing your hair with Mom's at the salon, and retail therapy at Whole Foods - Plus getting a doctor who listens ❤

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      You are definitely not alone, I'm glad my vlogs can pop up at just the right time with what you need to hear. :) It's magic. ;) Perimenopause is so weird. There's so many preconceived ideas about it, most of them wrong I'm learning. I hope I can create a safe place for all of us to talk about this experience and how we feel navigating it. :)

  • @pixie8361
    @pixie8361 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    So much to say... First of all, thank you for your comforting, wise words. I think many of us are feeling a lot of fear right now. I know I am, but your words have helped me today. In fact, I think I'll save this vlog to watch later when I need to hear those words again. Also, I love the red hair! So festive! I've personally been dealing with recent current events by drowning myself in Christmas movies (I have a Hallmark+ subscription!) and listening to Christmas music pretty much all of my waking hours. For me, that always begins on November 1st anyway! By the way, I, for one, am definitely NOT mad about extra Vlogmas videos! I rarely comment, but I've been watching your channel for years now, and I LIVE for your Vlogmas in particular! I also have no problem at all with extra long videos. I have to admit that I sort of live vicariously through you since I live by myself with an energy-limiting chronic illness (ME/CFS) and only leave my house for appointments. The only store I've stepped in for the last 4 years is Walgreens to get my vaccines. Anyway, keep being you! You always make my day brighter! I hope you can find some answers to how you're feeling. Stay committed to finding a doctor who will take you seriously! I've dealt with a lot of medical gaslighting myself, and it can be soul-crushing, but don't give up hope in finding a good doctor. They are out there!

      I'm so glad what I said in the vlog helped in any way. I really wasn't sure how this vlog would go over, but the overwhelming support has made me so happy. It helps knowing I'm not the only one feeling this way.

    Society needs a social support mechanism that is more satisfying and enriching than an internet comment discussion, but is not quite as involved as a cult. My favorite "pessimist optimist" anthem is "If I Ever Feel Better" by Phoenix. I was super stoked for humanity when they played it at the Olympics closing ceremony. Hope things get better, and even if things stay mid, at least the weather will be good.

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      We definitely need something better than a comment section but not as involved as a cult, that's a great way of putting it lol! And the weather is definitely helping even on the days that otherwise aren't that great.

    I’ve switched to watching from daytime (lunch break) to evening. Your vlogs are so relaxing. So thank you. I love that you continue to have hope even during the dark days. We need to hold on to hope always 🥰. Good for you being an advocate for your own health and body. If a doctor won’t listen, definitely get a new one. I feel like peri menopause was a rollercoaster ride and I was just barely hanging on 🤦‍♀️😝. Then I got cancer and chemo kicked me into full blown menopause, so had all those symptoms to deal with as well. But i got through it. Life is a wild ride for sure! Stay hopeful lovely Andrea. There are good days ahead. I will keep you in my prayers 🥰

    I'm an ex-academic (British uni) and now a full time romance author. Nice to meet you!
    Perimenopause was the wildest time of my life. Everything you describe is so familiar, right down to shutting down a whole chunk of my life (which I did by leaving a day job with no other plan but writing books with happy endings!)
    I'm out the other side of menopause now, and can't believe some of the decisions I made. Thankfully they worked out for me, but I can feel your anxiety through the screen. I really feel for you. Just know that the big feelings will subside, but you don't have to suffer through them. Go find that doctor!

      Hi Kaye! Nice to meet you too! I'm a semi-academic and part time romance author, so we have a bit in common. I'm glad to hear you're on the other side of menopause and that all the decisions you made worked out. It's a rough time for me right now, but hearing comments like yours and knowing that there is an "other side" really helps.

    Andrea, first of all, love the hair, I’m glad you took time for some self-care even tho you weren’t feeling the best (it always helps, right?). As always, I’m watching this vlog while going through my morning routine. Sending you lots of love, and hope you’re feeling better! It’s so crazy how there are so many of us in the world and yet we sometimes might feel so lonely. It has been a tough week for me too, dealing with depression and anxiety, and feeling like I’m completely alone, but know that your videos always help. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️

    Hey Andrea,
    Thanks for reaching out-sounds like a very challenging time for you on many fronts-your resilience is clearly there and it’s ok to not feel ok!
    It’s the hardest thing to be present during difficulties, isn’t it? Much easier to be present during fun times!
    Sounds like you are putting in the work & using the available tools to help yourself, so glad that you have a Therapist, we all need access to one, I believe, just like massage or exercise.🥰
    I am watching you after a big day of packing house to move, I love winding down with your vlogs at the end of my busy day!
    Thanks for the book references-will keep an eye out for the second one, am familiar with Eckhert Tolle.😃
    Hope the hair do was a pick up for the day, also hope you get a good Dr to help you with the peri-peri!☺️

    I’d suggest you have your thyroid checked. I always had low normal readings but my new doctor checked further and found my thyroid itself was working twice as hard as normal to express that little squirt of hormone. Supplementation has made a real difference in how I feel across the board.

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      This is a good recommendation, and I keep forgetting to talk about this in the vlogs. I get my thyroid levels checked every 6 months and am on medication. But when I find my new doctor I'll be sure to ask them to do a detailed analysis of my thyroid. I sometimes worry my prescription isn't what it needs to be, but my current doctor thinks because my levels are "normal" we don't need to adjust anything. It's just one of many things I'm annoyed about with my current provider/office.

    Hi Andrea, love your hair, that color looks great on you!
    It took my daughter three doctors to address her perimenopause symptoms. They ran tests on her, she got treatment, and now she's feeling much better.
    Your vlog today reminded me so much of my oldest son and how he is feeling and what he's going through. He's close in age to you, even has a birthday two days after you, there are many similarities. I'm hoping that he'll find some happiness soon.
    I also go through periods of loneliness too. I combat it by writing. It always puts me in a better place.

    Bless you I’m so sorry you are feeling like this. I’m sorry to hear your doctor was a bit dismissive of you. I’m the same age as you and I have fibromyalgia and it can be hard emotionally. Whenever I feel really low I listen to Dermot Kennedy - Better Days. Remember these dark days are not permanent and you can and will get through this. What has really helped me is reading Joe Dispenzas books and doing the meditations. They are really powerful. I would really recommend. Sending you love and I will send a prayer out for you tonight xx

    ❤ Hi Andrea. I'm sorry you're feeling alone. I hope those hiking groups help. Your hair looks amazing! I'm looking forward to vlogmas, that's my favorite time of year. I've also been feeling lonely for awhile. One of my friends has encouraged me to take in person classes at college, but I can't due to my work schedule. I've tried making friends on bumble, but I'm really socially awkward and I don't know, some people just want someone to text not to hang out with. I did join some meet up groups, but a lot of them are quite far from me making it difficult because I don't drive. I don't know, I find it hard. As far as dating goes, my family is pressuring me to settle down and have a family. Like yeah I want that, but finding the right guy is hard. I've been on so many dates and faced a lot of rejection. I've kind of given up at this point and just stay in my situationship. What I'm trying to say is you're not alone. Just remember us in the comments, a lot of us feel that way from time to time. I've seen quite a few articles talking about how lonely people are nowadays. I think it would be nice if we could focus on building communities or our found families. It's just hard finding those people or maybe that's just me. I don't know.

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I hope you can find a class that would work with your schedule, taking a class is such a good idea, I might look into that myself. And as for your family, don't buy into the pressure. Dating is hard and it's easy for other people to tell you that you should do it. It's okay to do what feels right for you. Building community and found families are so important, but they don't happen overnight. The right people tend to find us at the right time.

    I'm about a decade ahead of you. Transitioning into menopause is a hard hard adjustment! My experience was that support came more with other women's advice, in social media tips or articles on diet and exercise and sympathy than through the doctors office. Of course keep up on your health through check ups- but for me the biggest thing I did and no one likes to hear this is cut out dairy- cut my symptoms by over 50 % ( easy to do and in one month you will know if it helps or not) and decrease sugar increase fiber and veggies and fruit, unfortunately it is those things- The bad days- give yourself grace- treat yourself and kind of deal with the symptoms individually- instead of as a whole issue. It is management. Thanks for the weekly videos- have watched your England videos more then once working in the studio-

      Thank you so much for this comment, it's great to hear from those of you who've been through this already. I'm definitely already starting to dive into researching it on social media and articles. I'll be finding a new doctor for sure, but honestly already it's been so helpful just getting validation for what I'm feeling and knowing that it's not all in my head. I struggle with food restrictions and eliminating things, but I'm definitely working hard to add in more fiber and fruits and veggies and I'll see how it goes from there. I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos and I love that you've watched the England vlogs more than once. That makes me so happy. :)

    Whenever you upload, I bring out my cross stitch or embroidery and just chill. I would love long vlogs for Vlogmas but only if you’re up for it. No pressure, do what’s best for you

      I'm glad I can keep you company while you do needlework. :) I'm sure there will be some long vlogs that sneak into Vlogmas. Short vlogs are usually harder for me than long vlogs for some silly reason. :)

    Sad to see you that way. Taking care of yourself and be nice to yourself, seems to be the right decision. Also, take celebrating yourself into the game. Cause you have all reasons to do so, even if you don't feel it maybe. #virtualhug

    Also, I dont know if you do this or not, but my one friend who has a chronic illness has started to say "ok, well mark it in my notes that I asked about this and you dismissed it and I'll mark in mine as well." She carries a notebook and writes down all her convos with doctors. She said it started to help a little.
    And for your red hair. I've been dying mine red for over a decade. Get Kera Color coloring depositing conditioner. Its magic. And wash with cold water only a couple times a week. It'll help the red last.

      @AndreaJSeverson  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ugh, I really wish I'd thought to say that in the appointment, it's a good phrase to keep in mind. I think I was at a point where I already knew I wanted to find a new doctor and I'd mentally shut down. But that is such a great way to advocate for yourself in the doctors office.
      And thanks for the recommendation, I've ordered that conditioner, I'll give it a try. I feel like just after one wash the vibrancy has already faded lol. I love this color so much, I just want it to last.

      @@AndreaJSeverson Red is SUPER hard to keep , especially if you're new to red dye. A sulfate free color protecting shampoo should help! It took me a few trial and errors to get my red to stick a bit. It still fades, but the Keracolor helps!

    Just keep in mind with perimenopause, it's largely a SYMPTOMS based diagnosis. A hormone test will only test your hormones in THAT specific moment and in that moment, they could not be acting up or levels be too off kilter, but it doesn't mean it's still not peri

    • @teresa-wolfsparrowcovers
      @teresa-wolfsparrowcovers 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      But yes, my generalized anxiety went through the effing ROOF when peri started for me and I've struggled a LOT with leaving the house as a result. And it's disturbed what I think might be ADHD, but I don't have an official diagnosis on that part.

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's a good point about hormone tests, thank you. The more I research the symptoms, the more it lines up. I might still be very early stages of peri, but I really think that's what this is. I think having ADHD and fibromyalgia also doesn't help, so it's a lot for me to research.

    I was so excited this morning to realize it’s a Monday because I have been feeling very lonely lately, and I knew your video would keep me company! How fitting that you started off the video by saying you were going to vlog to feel less lonely. I think we all could use some connection these days. ❤️
    You’re not a hopeless romantic - you’re a hopeful romantic! :)
    On that note, have you ever read the book Humankind: A Hopeful History?
    I do relate to a lot of what you said. I tend to swing between being very pessimistic (things will never change) to very optimistic (history has proven that we can strive to make the world a better place). But being optimistic all the time can feel exhausting. It’s important to take the time needed for self-care and validate the harder feelings as well.

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'm really glad the video came at just the right time. I really hope you can find a way of getting some connection (beyond these vlogs, though they will always be here for you) and that you feel a little less lonely soon. Hugs. And I've not read Humankind but that title sounds amazing! I've added it to my library wishlist.
      Being optimistic all the time can definitely be exhausting. We absolutely should validate the harder feelings, I've just learned that I can live for long in the hard feelings or that gets even more exhausting than the optimism.

      @ I hope you have been feeling better this week! And it sounds like you have some exciting plans coming up very soon. :)
      Yay for Vlogmas starting early! Make them as long as you want (as long as editing isn’t too overwhelming to make long vlogs everyday)!

      I think they'll be on the shorter side (35-45mins) to start with while my friend is visiting and while I'm still teaching full time, but I think as my work load decreases the vlog lengths will increase lol!

    Oh Andrea, you 100% need a new doctor. I've had better experiences with PA's and NP over MD's. Not always, I'm not trying to say that but they tend to have more time to listen. Your doctor should not have dismissed your concerns, at least not without explaining why. I went through surgical menopause and experienced the same anxiety, depression, and other issues. For me, going on low-dose anxiety meds helped immensely. If you are on one, maybe consider changing the dose or trying something else. It helped me deal emotionally with the MANY other issues of menopause. It's hard but I think we're in a time when things are changing. You don't have to feel this way. If you can, look up menopause specialists in your area. I'm in Oregon and there is a clinic just for menopause.

    • @AndreaJSeverson
      @AndreaJSeverson  12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, the lack of explantion for why she shot down the idea of perimenopause so fast was frustrating. I'm just so done with that doctor and that office in general, so I'm moving forward with finding a new doc. And there's a menopause clinic that I'm going to be looking up that someone recommended for me here in Phoenix. So fingers crossed. :)

      It's going to take a while to research new doctors, find one who's accepting new patients, and then get in to see them, but it will be worth it in the end.

    Im sending you lots of hugs in these difficult times! I hope you’ll feel better soon ❤ have you checked your thyroid? I was having similar symptoms and it turned out to be hypothyroidism and hashimotos - just a clue, maybe this helps! ❤❤❤❤

      @AndreaJSeverson  11 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Thank you for this comment, I should probably mention this in a video, because it's a good point to get your thyroid checked. In my case that's not the issue. I've been hypothyroid for years and am on medication and get my levels tested regularly, so I know they're in a good place and not the cause of these current issues.

    Unitarian Universalist Churches are a great space for anybody looking for community. They are non-dogmatic and queer friendly. I'm surviving these post election days largely because of the community I've found there. It's been so useful having a solid group of people who still believe in justice and equity as we walk into whatever is next.

    • @AndreaJSeverson

      I need to look up some Unitarian Universalist Churches, it would be nice to have a faith based community, but while I'm Christian, I'm also queer friendly and feminist and a lot of other things that get judged by most Christian churches.

      @AndreaJSeverson Christians are always welcome in UU spaces. How much Jesus is talked abt in UU spaces depends a lot on what part of the country you are in and the specifics of the congregation. But Jesus is one of the folks who's wisdom and insight inspires the work of UUism

      I really love that. I'm Christian but I also love teachings in other religions, spiritualities, and philosophies. It's another reason why I never felt like I fit in in a traditional Christian denomination.

    Perimenopause sucks.
    Turn off the news for a couple of weeks. They all make money with drama and making us afraid, not to mention turning us against one another. So many are suffering from a distortion of perspective. Just turn it off and focus on what's real and within reach.

    • @AndreaJSeverson
