    I just rode a 883 for first time in 20 years today. My first bike was a 883 back in 2003. Bought it new. I had more fun on that bike than any big twin I’ve had. Of course my heritage softail rides better and way better on long rides . But for just pure fun on a twisty road a 883 is an absolute blast ! The engine power isn’t all that much but it’s fast enough to get you killed

    So the rear swingarm on an XL is alloy. Is it more difficult to mod (like lowering, shocks, etc) than the standard? Thanks for the vid! I was considering an 883Xl project.

I put 16 inch spoked wheels on her, whit walls, wl style springer front fork, mother roads custom springer seats. its gonna be great. went the old school route and had the jugs bored, had the heads reworked vale joby, still gotta build the carb, but i cant wait to se how she rides. Sportsters are great bikes. had this one for 11 years now, its been so dependable and just a joy to own and ride. Plus its all made in America and built like a little Sherman tank. I like the big twins too dont get me wrong, but for me, id take a sporty anyday of the week over a big twin jm2 cents.

    I purchased a 2002 same bike with the 1200 kit from Screamin Eagle. I personally never rode a regular 883r so don't know the difference but it's a pretty fast bike for a sportster and plan on taking it to the drag strip this year. Mine only has the speedometer and I noticed yours has 2. Can I purchase a tach for my 2002 by chance? Thanks for any advice.

    • @thatoneguymoto
      @thatoneguymoto  ปีที่แล้ว

    • @barrydelljeremy8879
      @barrydelljeremy8879 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. Pretty much the only difference with the Sportster R is dual front disc brake. 2004+ rubber mounted engine weights like 90lbs more then the older model.

  • @rgengineering
    @rgengineering ปีที่แล้ว

    there is only 6 hp difference in the 2000 883 engine as compared to the 2000 1200 engine. the main difference in the 883 foundation and the 1200 foundation is the primary gearing to the clutch. the 883 crankshaft gear (drive gear) spins the clutch gear (driven gear) slower than the 1200 engine. so the 883 appears as lower geared. while the 1200 engine spins the clutch faster corresponding to a higher speed gearing. the buell engines use the 883 crank gear and of course compression and bigger carb, more aggressive cams to get that launching, and high rev. the 883 makes a better street tracker with the 1250 big bore kit and an extra clutch friction and steel than the 1200.

  • @jimstenlund6017
    @jimstenlund6017 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    1200 doesn’t scream at you at 80(?)…isn’t the gearing the same?

    I’ve had a 2001 883r with a Wiseco 1200 kit on it, fabulous. Sold it to my brother. Bought a really cheap 2004 rubber mount 883, a silver one. I had a fiddle and a fettle and got it going really well especially when I replaced the shit clutch plates for Energy One plates. Heavier clutch, though. I sold that to my other brother. I’ve just bought a 2006 883r with less than 6000 miles on it. It coughs through the air filter and the Screaming Eagle slip ons sound awful, that horrible “splatty” noise unbaffled silencers make. Time for a fiddle and fettle, I reckon.

    XL is the only H-D I'd consider owning, except maybe the Sportster-derived XR1200. If I had enough time & money, I'd love to get a '98-'03 xl883 to build into a fast H-D....which is different from a fast bike, but might be fun....

      Everyone has their own idea of what a ‘fast bike’ is. Ride a Grom/clone for a while, then everything else ( like 200cc+ ) is ‘fast’ lol.

  • @josephfriedrich9792

    Found a 2003 883r with 5k on it for 2500 bucks.
    A 1999 xl1200s with 30k on it for 3100 bucks.
    A 2005 xl1200r with 9k on it for 5600
    And a 2016 xl1200cx with 5k on it for 6700.
    I don't know what to do. If I'd get the 883, the first thing I'd do is the ss 1200 kits. But then it's more than the 99 xl1200s which is a very nice bike. But then for a little more, I could have a newer 1200r. And even a little more, a 16 1200 roadster. I want to cafe whatever i get, hence my model choices, and speeds not an issue, i have my buells and ebrs for that, but i cant get over the stigma of the 883 being a beginner bike.

    Do you mean you can easily ride at the "legal state speed limit" and the engine runs under stressed. The question for an MBA business case is why Harley didn't make the Sportster EU5 and continue the line. Another Harley blunder and dumb business decision. Yes, there will be a Custom and Bronx but they will never gain the legendary status of the Sportster.

    • @thatoneguymoto
      @thatoneguymoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tend to agree with you, especially on the EU5 Sporty. They've towed a fine line for so long, trying to satisfy the die-hards, while trying to bring in new customers. The time is now (or maybe has passed) to pick a side and go all in.

    If i have to upgrade an 883 to 1200 on free cost. I will do it what the heck?. However if i have to pay for it and to get that bit extra of power. I rather go buy a 1200cc second hand or sell that 883 dinosaur and get a real bike from other manufacture.
    Yes i love my XL1200T because it is more than enough for me. I can travel with it carry my stuff and it protect me from wind. Just perfect for me. However i will never get a naked sportster 🤦‍♂️😉
    This is my last Harley for sure. I want something more modern and comfy and do not cost me a liver. Anyhow in short time Harley prices are going to rock high in Europe one more reason to stay away from them and a good opportunity to sell mine at the price I bought it.

    The only people who give the sports the lack of love is a culture thing because they’re a number one selling bikes in India and China and Europe but America everything is bigger so when you have something like the road king or even the street bar that has an 1800 mL motor and you hop on something that’s 1000 mL less people feel like they’re too good for that not me I love my 883 eventually I will do a 1200 and when that bike is no longer rideable I will upgrade finally to a Lowrider S
