I live in Australia and bought my 1997 883 Sporty from a friend back in 2009, for a good price and rode it around for a few years until I got it set up how I like as far as suspension etc. I bought the 1275 kit from Hammer Performance, along with a more capable clutch, the oil pump drive gear they make, the CNC machined ignition rotor they produce, and I put in the 2007 upgraded oil pump as well. I used the standard heads and the 2-1 exhaust that came on the bike when I purchased it. I had already had an S&S air cleaner setup installed, which was a massive improvement over the factory one. I can’t speak highly enough about Hammer Performance! They are outstanding people to deal with! The difference in the performance of my Sporty is AWESOME! Not only does the upgrade give me more power, I get much better mileage than I had. The guys at HP say this is due to the squish band producing a more efficient burn, which makes sense, but it’s way better than I expected. I now have a bike that is better balanced, so; smoother, but has bags more torque and power throughout the rev range that’s more than enough for what I want. It cost me just over $1500 (AUD), which means I haven’t spent more on the bike in total than I can reasonably recoup if I ever want to sell it. Which I don’t think will ever be the case. Hammer Performance is the BEST!
I just had my old solid mount 883 converted to 1200cc by a great local bike shop (A Harley only bike shop) that’s been in business for 35 years. Very happy with the results, huge power and torque gain!
Hell yeah! Congrats that is awesome, a 1200 conversion almost doubles the power over the 883 cylinders. A good independent shop is one of the best places to take a bike!
@@GixxerFoo Thanks, man. Yeah and I just completed the 500 mile break-in, and then opened it up a bit. Far more power than I was actually expecting, tons of torque and it's crazy over 3500rpm. This one has the stock heads, but they did head work, new valves and springs, Andrews N4 cams (I think these are medium grind, labeled as "street/drag" 2000-6000rpm"), carb re-jetted of course, big sucker air filter, and fairly open slip on pipes.
Exactly what I am thinking about doing, finding a used sportster 883....at a decent price. ..then putting the big bore kit on along with more customizing.
The main reason i bought my 2016 iron was because of the color compared to all the other sportsters . I put 500 break in miles on her , then called hammer and spoke with Arron for an hour on the phone . Placed an order for 1275 big bore kit and bought hammer Preformance air intake as well . While I was waiting for their kit my mechanic had my 883 heads ported here locally in CT. And I also bought a set of Andrews cams. Got everything put together and put 500 miles on it for the break in ,They sent me a map for my power vision From hammer performance. And I absolutely love the bike. Plan on having a Dyno tune done this summer at some point , The bike screams and I love it. Hammer performance big bore kit is best money I spent. End of story.absolutley love my bike !!!!!
I'd say they are best on the market! I bet your Iron is a real sleeper now, people see an Iron and assume it's still an 883 lol. Best part is you still get the 883 price with the insurance company!
I agree 100% Hammer is the best when it comes to everything Sportster ! , Arron and Hammer Dan are great to work with extremely Knowledgeable and willing to help. And honestly my bike is a very mild street build compared to what the guys at hammer build . My iron is probably around 88-90 horsepower. It’s a great all around street bike for me . But lol I already want more !!!! Thank you for the video , keep the sportster stuff coming . I’d like to know more adout your bike . I’ll subscribe now
@@GixxerFoo right but if you ever got an accident and the insurrance calls an expert , he will see the modification and your insurrance Can refuse to paid..
2016 48 here with 1275 kit, 560 cams, stock 1200 heads, powervision, exhaust and intake....rips harder than my fxdls (110ci) with a pipe and heavy breather...a lot harder...but you really have to wring its friggen neck, but thats the fun part. +1 for hammer I worked with Dan on my setup and base tune, really top notch guys and extremely awesome service.
That's awesome! They say the stock late model heads are pretty damn good as is. I'm planning on the same setup except with 570 cams. What compression ratio did you end up going with?
I think another option, that is worthy of discussion, is using a buell xb12 engine, you can get them reasonably cheap, about 1k for a good motor, tear it down, you have the jugs, the pistons, the heads, the cams, the lifters, you get the crank and rods ( the buell bottom end is significantly stronger than the sportster engines bottom end) ,, you do have to get the original sportster case machined to accept the buell bottom end, ( its reasonable, lots of shops are familiar with the conversion) , I think you also have to use some of the primary pieces from the buell engine as well,, but for the total cost, if your handy with a wrench, and have worked on these engines, it's easy to do I think. For well under the price of some of these kits, you can build a 100hp, 85ft lb engine, that revs happily to 7k, without destroying the bottom end. With some more money, if it's in your budget, for about 700 bucks, you can get the 110hp big bore kit for the buell, use it on your sportster build, and you can have a 110hp monster, and for close to the same cost as some of these kits are that include the heads and everything. On a side note, even staying with the sportster spacific kits, the bottom ends will never be as capable, as the buell bottom end. I forgot to mention also, that with the buell engine, you also get the upgraded, and stronger oil pump, and the drive gear ( the buell one is an excellent piece, many write ups on doing a sporty to buell oil pump conversion) ,, for the price for a cheap buell engine, you get tons of upgrades, that would cost you so much, if you just sourced the parts individually. Just a thought, but this is the other ( and in my opinion, the better option) for building a reliable, sleeper sporty. Great video as always/ fist bump
Thank you! Yeah Buell engines are awesome! They have a few differences like cam numbering to be aware of but they do have much higher quality parts. It doesn't take much to get those motors into a Sportster frame. Although l wouldn't tear a salvage Buell apart if it had a good chassis. I'd love to get a Buell XB12R Firebolt... l regret not picking one up years ago now.
I put the hammer performance 1275 kit in my bobber, bigger cams, roller rockers, adjustable push rods, bee hive valve springs, bigger valves, rejected the carb, and built my own custom exhaust, my bike absolutely rips
@@GixxerFoo 2009 883 sportster XL. EFI, camshaft, open drag pipes ( when i first got it) now some mild baffles, reprogrammed ECU and im sure at a minimum 1200 kit. I've already hurt a Trackhawk owner's and a Hellcats owner's feelings with just a half throttle pull. It had 12k miles when i got it 2yrs ago it at 18k miles now. I just maintain it like it supposed to be maintained.
I have a 2005 883XLC that i bought two years ago and put 10 thousand miles on. Getting it converted to 1200 this winter. Looking forward to spring 2023.
Leave the bottom end exactly the same and go at least to 1250 ci. You’ll thank me later... almost double the hp and definitely double the torque Andrews kit came with everything I needed. I opted for Cometic gaskets ($500.00 for top end and bottom end together) I also left my top end the same, but plan to shave about 40thousandths and better cams
I just got my 1275 kit , 570 cams, smash head work to 883 heads, 10 to 1 30 degree reverse some pistons and all the supporting components from hammer delivered to my door for just under $3000 with the xlforum member discount. Aaron told me, depending on the exhaust, this kit would easily break 90 hp. And like you mentioned without even winding it up too crazy. I’m expecting close to 100 hp.
@@Partyatmosphere It's true that there are many fast and cheap bikes, and it's not hard to find one with high power and high rpm, but you can't find one that is more handsome than Harley, highly customizable, and can satisfy over 100 horsepower with extremely low rpm. The hammer kit Harley can even easily achieve 10 seconds from 0-400. Considering the fact that it can have high power and low rpm with such a handsome posture, the answer is, only Harley.
I have done the Hammer 1275 but went all out with cams and porting on heads. It will turn your sporty into a monster! I am right at the 120HP mark and you do loose some down low drivability but people are amazed at how hard it pulls away. I have blown some of the big twins away light to light. Need to build my RK up next and wake that 103 up. Depending on how hard you are on the bike after the Hammer kit goes in belt life is decreased a lot but I still prefer it over the chain for ease of maintence.
Hammer is where it's at and l am jealous of your numbers! Damn all out and over 120 on a Sportster! Might just still eat that RK... what year is your Sportster?
@@GixxerFoo My 2005 is a absolute blast just remember to price out all the other components that will make and hold all the new power, If you plan to keep the bike the expense is worth it.
The Harley dealership is insanely expensive but the one thing I do like about them is they do you know how to fix your bike I can’t speak for everyone else they do get it done very well but 130 an hour on most of things on my bike, I can do myself even without know how a quick TH-cam search and you can do most of the work to your bike yourself, but when it comes to engine and cam work I will absolutely leave that to the dealership or find a good motorcycle shop near me, which I may do all of this next winter time at this place I found called get lowered.
You might have mentioned this in another vid, I don't know, but if you're upgrading for power make sure you upgrade suspension and BRAKES! Maybe stick on a fork brace and steering damper aswell,if you're going round twisty roads. The OE parts just aren't up to those kind of horses.
I actually didn't mention that! Great thinking though! The older models brakes and suspension were not up to the task at all. 2016 and newer with the updated suspension and brakes are awesome, well compared to earlier years but there's always room for improvement. The 2011 and up Custom is hard to find a fork brace for with the wide front end, I have looked everywhere and they fit everything but that model.
Good information and definitely agree a must is a shop manual. As far as an independent service I visited several and until I found one that felt like they cared and knew what they were doing.
What brand of kit did you use? I know Hammer stresses really hard to do it yourself and install it to the letter by their instructions, especially how it's broke in.
The engines in the buells were not your run of the mill sportster engine. Buell did a lot to them. The later xb12s, xb12r, and xb12t has a 1203cc version that produced 103hp stock. I would love to get my hands on one of those.
It's hard to beat! I've looked at some others that are floating around out there like from NRHS and Revolution. They just aren't as good in my opinion and they don't have the options Hammer has. More expensive too from some companies for only a 1250 kit.
Still breaking in my wife's 1996 883 conv. Did the 1275 kit with 30* rev.dome pistons . They did the heads. Let me tell you the heads are where the magic happens . Especially if your doing a hotter cam. The energy one clutch is plenty good they use Alto clutch fibers .can't wait to get it above 3000 rpm
I am jealous to say the least, the break in period is the absolute worst. You spend all that time building it and you have to baby it for what seems like forever!
@@GixxerFoo torque is crazy now, I got there black Friday deal with everything included .I mean everything all the way to new spark plugs was less than Harley offers for the 1200 kit .

@@GixxerFoo best bang for the buck it's getting your 883 heads matched to the 30* pistons Arron is a stand-up dude . If you do the 1275 kit do the heads for the revs some pistons not the flat tops do it ones and be done ...kinda like ripping a bandaid off lol
@@shawn9878 I really like Arron, he's pretty awesome and straight forward. I have the late model 1200 heads so I've been back and forth between having them rework them or just stick with the flat tops. The more I think about it and what you've said I think the reverse domes may be worth it honestly.
You can make a 883 a monster, just remember to get the heads worked over for the on an 883. Even without the heads done you can still get up there in the power range!
The Harley Sportster 883 and 1200 have the same transmission gears, but the 1200 has a different number of teeth on the transmission pulley. The 883 has a lower gear ratio than the 1200, which means it accelerates faster but has more difficulty at high speeds.
Just subbed bro, i like your laid back style. I have the 1275 kit went with the bathtub heads an used the fueling 505/515 reaper cams, also used a Dynatek DSPT cdi box. My sporty is vicious! Little over a week ago I have purchased the 100+ horsepower 1275cc kit for my 2018 Iron 883. Sent the heads out 5 days ago. Looking forward to bolting it up and getting the break in period started. Too bad I live in Wisconsin lol. Will update once I get it done and the winter wraps up.
Ive got a good bit of the Iron 1275 break-in process done. The lope from the cams is awesome. Havent even gone half throttle yet, have to keep it under 4K RPM still. She rips with minimal throttle, and I haven't even auto tuned yet
That break in process is excruciating to get through but it is critical to do right. I love Hammer's cams, they aren't as loud as a lot of Sportster cams with their ramp angle they designed. Did you go with their 560 cam?
I have a 2015 forty eight and I put the S&S 1250 big bore kit with cams. Then I put screaming eagle stage 4 heads on with cobra pipes. New S&S adjustable push rods and I did have it dyno tuned. 107hp and I did all the work my self but the tune
That's frickin awesome!! Doing it yourself is the best way so you know it's done right! I bet that bike absolutely rips, S&S makes some super quality products.
@@GixxerFoo Yes its almost to much and with the 2.2 gal tank I only get about 70 miles on a full tank when I drive normal. I have been a small engines technition for a long time and this bike was the first fuel injection bike I have owned and worked on so I learned a lot about it.
@@adamak47miller90 My wife has 48 and it's stock other than a tune, exhaust and air cleaner. It get's about 70 miles to a tank too, that's pretty awesome for your bike to get that with all the mods. Fuel injection isn't that bad to work on, what tuner did you go with?
The Harley screaming eagle kit doesn’t make as much gains because it doesn’t include cams… so do cams as well and get more power. S&S hooligan is a great pick as well
As the owner of a stock carbureted 1200, I don't understand how anybody would not be happy with that. It easily keeps up with traffic, cruises on the freeway at 80 mph, and will top out at close to 120 mph. That's more than you can legally use on the street, and I don't see many people taking their Sportsters to the track. Sportsters and all pre M8 Harleys are about the riding experience, the feel and sound, not power. If you want power, get a 600cc or 1000cc crotch rocket. Or a Hayabusa. Get the right tool for the job to begin with. Unlike car engines, you can't get aftermarket parts for motorcycle engines to beef up the engine from the ground up to handle more power. A 1200 engine has a lower redline than an 883, because it has bigger heavier pistons. But an 883 is geared for the 883 engine, which turns faster. When you put a 1200 kit on it, you are still stuck with that 883 gearing. Putting a 1250 or 1275 kit on either an 883 or 1200 doesn't seem like a good idea. The more power an engine makes, the more stress it puts on it's parts (I've been an amateur drag racer for 45 years) Just what is all that power going to do to the bottom end and transmission? I have seen a lot of car engines destroyed by increasing the power of an otherwise stock engine with a turbocharger, supercharger, or nitrous. The stock parts couldn't handle it and broke, in some cases scattering the engine all over the track.
I’m an ex MC guy. 1%er.. I’m pretty short too. I love sportsters! You can do anything to them to me their kinda like a VW bug. I used to fly and was able to keep up no problem. I have a 883 with a 1275 kit in it. Also I have a new clutch in it and drag pipes and I changed the sprockets for top end on hwy. I roll at 135mph on the highway and still have some torque. I notice that in the description there is a link to a video about maybe choosing a big twin instead of a Sporty.... I have both an '06 XL1200R that is now 'Hammered' out to 1250, and a '10 model Streetbob that is now 113" with reworked CVO top end that makes 130+bhp and 120+ torque. The Sporty is easier around town and for rides of ,maybe, under 150 miles - it also handle twisties much better due to the overall smaller size of the bike. I am 5'9" and a bit over-weight and find that if I am going further, such as hundreds or thousands of miles that the Dyna is the bike as it is more comfortable and handles speed better especially when loaded with camping gear etc. One trick all Sporty owners should look into is the bike's gearing.... especially if it is/was an 883. The primary gearing is so low as to make the engine revs very high at freeway speeds - and more vibes along with it. If you get a Hammer Performance 1250 or 1275 kit then the vibes lessen as the pistons leave the engine more balanced than the H-D stuff - look on Hammer's site and they explain it very well. Back to gearing - look on 883sportster.com I think it is and you can find bigger trans pulleys that sort the gearing out - I use a 32 tooth pulley on my 1200/1250 conversion and it leaves the bike cruising at over 90mph @ 4k rpm. It is not worth putting bigger cams in an 883 or twelve hundred (especially and 883/1200 conversion) without getting the heads ported as they don't flow enough for even the standard 883 or 1200's cams respectively. If you want power, go for the big twin but remember to replace the engine mounts as standard ones are rubbish - go to Big Bear Performance or Chopper Hauss ones though as all the others are just 'a Band Aid on an open wound' so to speak. For sheer performance the big twin is better, for fun it is the Sporty. As always folks, 'if you have to ask the prices Sir, then you cannot afford it' applies to most things ......
Very well put, Hammer has done some serious engineering in their products. I would hazard to guess they might know that Evo Sportster better than Harley.
It's not really $300 more, because there's more in the HAMMER package. For example, you get a full Dynojet Powervision tuner, you get a full extra plate clutch kit, etc. So it's not apples to apples.
I have a buell xb12ss lightning 106hp its a 1203 thunderstorm with xbrr oil pump and extra big crank pin standard and big brakes . Maybe some buell parts are the answer ?
@@shep236 At one time, the Buell heads were better, sure. But in 2004, all XL1200's models got what's essentially the Buell XB heads. Same ports, same valves, same spring pack, same chambers. The only differences are cosmetic. These are the best production heads ever made for the Evolution XL platform. The XL1200 continues to ship with these heads to the present day, with only some minor changes in 2007 when the switch to EFI happened.
thank you so much, this is question that i had for a lifetime! i thought i can only convert my 883 to 1200 and 1200 only to stage 4 that is unfair, thank you so much
You're welcome, honestly the 1275 or 1250 is what the stage 4 should be. The 883 is same bottom end, cases and transmission. 883 just has smaller displacement cylinders, pistons and different cylinder heads.
Had some genius on facebook tell me doing a 1250 and insuring it a 883 was insurance fraud. Lol. My ins knows its there from declared value, cant change the frame vin.
I stage one'ed my 1200 Roadster and have been chopping weight off it to increase the effectiveness of the increased power. 3lbs here, 5lbs there, 20lbs OEM Exhaust and Cast Iron Bracket for a 2-1 thin plate steel bracket. I feel a stage two coming on... maybe next season.
I really like how the 2004-2008 883s look and how they ride. They are ok but do need more power. I was thinking the big bore kit plus a very hot cam to boot.
@@GixxerFoo That is a plus for the good side of things. Insurance is high on most but some other things, pretty low really. It all depends on who you go with.
Yippee! Add displacement. You think the Sportster vibrates? What until that 1275 gets to 5000 rpm. The handlebar grips will grow to 3 inches. There is a reason HD limits the 883 to 40 HP. Vibs.
The newer rubber mount bikes really aren't that bad with vibrations, they do have a weird spot I've noticed like 60mph flat for some reason is awful. Above or below that it's pretty smooth, now the older rigid mount bike are a shake down. You get the full Harley experience with a rigid engine mount Sportster lol.
883's and 1200's share the same crank, literally the same part number, and they've done so every model year since 1995. Which means the motors are not balanced differently between an 883 and 1200 despite the piston weight difference. Instead, they balance the crank for a piston weight in between the two. Well, the forged pistons in a 1275 kit are actually about halfway in between the 883 and 1200 piston weight. So the balance actually comes out better.
I never understood the point of getting an 883 just to spend thousands to make it a “1200” meanwhile when you trade it in... it’s still titled and books a cheaper 883
Yeah that's the bad part about converting the 883 is selling or trading. But if you do build a monster motor with one the insurance company still has 883 by the vin.
@@ryanhibbard7796 1200 and 883 are the same bike, very few changes between them. Obviously the engine displacement, and the 1200 is geared better for highway vs 883 geared better for city streets.
Holy crap that's pretty ambitious, Hammer does make a 88ci and 90ci setup. Well they get the cylinders from Axtell, you'll have to bore the cases though to make it work.
Exactly, I rarely rev out to 5k. I'd go for the 1275 but use Hammer's 570 cams which are impressively an improvement over the factory W cams in the low and mid range.
I think you didn't mention the remapping part. the fuel pack 3 and the screaming eagle and the other computers are also expensive. I'm looking a way to do it without buying those computers.
Like your video and thanks I just have a problem with Hammer Prefomance. Followed instructions and wound up with scored cylinder. They said it was my fault because I didn't retard the timing like their web suggestions said. No wear did it talk about changing the stock timing in the paperwork that was sent to me with Prefomance piston kit. They had their money and could care less for the home installer. Wish I still had them I would show you photos. I've be a mechanic for many years and had no thought to change stock timing by 7 degrees after installing larger pistons.
Can I get a good kit for my 96 1200? What would you suggest? Thanks very much for any advice. You talked me into the gear drive cam for my 01 FXDX last year and I love it
That's awesome! On a 96 model you'll need to get some head work, the heads from 91 to 03 just weren't the best performance. For the street a 1275 kit and some head work will go long way, you could even add some of Hammer's 570 cams. 1275, head work and the 570 cam with a good exhaust is a great street setup.
My bro had Harley 1200 kit put in his 89, by Harley dealership, instantly can't keep a stator. Been "fixed" by 3 other independent Harley mechanics.....still can't keep a stator. It sat for many yrs, my nuther bro took it over and had it "rebuilt" .......still can't keep a stator I know this is something never heard of, never happened before, not possible. I'd like for him to get it fixed cause when he(69) dies it goes to me......... I'm thinking compensator For this reason, I'm big on stock.....well not just this reason.
That's really a curiosity since the bottom ends are the same on both the 883 and 1200. There's got to be something electrical causing the stator to fail. I'm just guessing here but maybe a wire was nicked during install and power is going to ground somewhere.

Yeah the weather has been rough, it's improved but I've been getting parts together and working on some videos. Lol quite a of maintenance this time of year, bald tires, oil changes, batteries. Lol all the fun stuff.
@@GixxerFoo Yesterday, November 17th, we had a very pleasant temperature of 82°! Here on the central coast of California, we tend to get our Summertime weather during the Fall months and sometimes even the Winter months. A few years ago we had record breaking temperatures over 110° around this same time! We set up a "mini waterpark" (put multiple inflatable pools and sprinklers up) on our front lawn for my daughter that one year. It was insane! Too hot for me. Today is looking to be much cooler, approx low-mid 70's. If I could send you some of our clear and warm weather, I would. Sorry Gixx-ster.
I was a bit off on my prediction for the temperature that I expected in my town for today... just a smide... It was pushing 80 again today!! I saw weather forecasts saying it was going to be in the low-mid 70's. 😶 Umm, nope. It was another perfect day to go out and get a little crispy before the cold weather finally makes its its appearance. A lovely peak temperature of 78° here. Our weather is very entertaining. Like the time it actually snowed this past February! We live only 5 miles from the ocean... but it actually snowed here! It was enough to leave a very nice white layer of its rare beauty on everything. The last time I remember it "snowing" (calling that past "snow" event would've been a huge exaggeration had it been like the most recent event February 22, 2019) it was a bit of visible white icy stuff up on the nearby hills. So ya, in this small town, weather is often the biggest source of our entertainment. Lol! *I even got video of the February 2019 snow falling as my daughter and I stood in our front yard. I'll have to post it to my TH-cam channel.

The worst thing about a stiffer clutch spring how hard it is to pull the clutch lever. I bought a used 883 converted to 1200. The seller said Harley did it with their own parts. That clutch lever is so hard to pull. The first time, I said, "Come on Harley, are you kidding me?" This was right after 38 years on classic BMW K bikes. Even the brake lever is, well it seems like a joke to me. What in the world?!
The stiffer clutch springs are supposed to squeeze the clutch pack hard for added power to keep it from slipping. It's really bad on the bigger bikes with the lever effort.
You can still run a belt if you want, Buells were 105 horse and still had the belt. Now if you're drag racing or something a chain conversion is a good idea.
It depends where you live, some states are really strict about emissions. You can use a hammer kit on the street and still have a very reliable bike if you're able to tune it to their specs. But I would not run their kits at the EPA fuel ratio, my Sportster stock ran like crap starving for fuel and it was hot. You can use the Harley Stage IV and be completely emissions legal, but it cost a lot more and you get major drop in performance compared to Hammer.
@@GixxerFoo oh yeah! And I was actually really impressed with their site! I mean the UI isnt the best I've ever seen, but it is so comprehensive and they cover just about all the questions one might have. I'll definitely be ordering from them when I get back to Vegas! For the lowest level kit, you dang near double the hp and tq for well under a grand. Crazy!
It depends how you ride it, you get more power at any given throttle position by using less throttle. Mileage usually goes down as a result of enjoying the power, but conservatively ridden it should get about the same.
Road King has gotta be like riding on a cloud compared to the Sportster. The new suspension on them is much improved but l'd like to try some aftermarket suspension.
Hey Gixxer, great stuff thanks. I just bought a 2005 sporty 883 C but I find the seat is waay uncomfortable, I keep pushing myself back up and on top of the passenger seat... Am I alone in this? I am just under 6' and about 100kg. Tx bro
I wonder how my little 883 can handle all that extra power and torque on its stock suspension and frame? Seems like the suspension, maybe even the forks might need some attention after doubling the power?
They do really well being upgraded with big bore kits. Engine handling it isn't a problem at all. The chassis does fine as well, assuming your forks are serviced and brakes are good.
@@GixxerFoo Awesome! Thank you! I have this 2o2o 883, it’s my first bike, and I have been wondering about upgrading to a soft tail in the near future for the extra power on the highway but I just love my sporty and don’t really want to see it go. I can’t afford two bikes but maybe if my 883 will do fine with a big bore kit sometime in the next couple of years I can just keep it and save some bucks on payments and insurance? Kinda the best of both worlds.
Ex as carly cause you're bike no matter the CC will always identify as an 883 by the vin 😄👍. That saves a lot of money on insurance. A big bore Sportster 1250/1275 is a blast to ride.

No issues with reliability, Hammer makes a solid kit and just a bolt on 1275 kit with cams isn't even gonna be close pushing the boundries of a stock Sportster bottom end.
If i am converting my 2022 883 to the 1275 would you recommend new heads and/or new cams? Or would the conversion kitwith new clutch spring be enough? Also should i be getting it tuned after doing all this? Would this actually even still work on 2022 model? :/
You will for sure need a tune, get the Power Vision from Hammer and it will come preloaded with the tune. The vanilla conversion with reusing the 883 won't be too bad but if you can pop for head work go ahead and do it. You won't regret it cause the 883 are different than 1200 heads and the heads will hold it back a bit. But specify this when you order the kit, Hammer kits using the stock 883 have different pistons than what you get if you do head work.
I am getting my 883 converted to a 1200 kit. The guy at the dealer specifically said it will be the equivalent to a stage 4 1200. I told them I wanted the most power I could get out of my bike... I am currently (and will continue) running V&H exhaust. My question... After this is done, would having the 1275 kit put on give me even more power? I'm guessing a 1275 kit for a converted 883 would be different? Guess I need to call the company
The 1275 kit will produce more power than the basic 1200 conversion, but with a 883 the heads will hold you back. Now with a set of 1200 heads on a 1275 kit that's a whole new ball game.
I've actually reached out to them regarding their kits you can look them up on TH-cam aswell they have a dyno video of their 1250 kit hitting a peak horse power of 126hp and 98 ft-lbs of tourqe but that the full kit not the basic kit like he showed in this video
GixxerFoo my only question at this point is which kit is most worth it - just the 1275 basic or should I start saving for the big kits. I’m trying to make my sportster more highway capable.
Honestly a 1275 and a set of their cams with a good exhaust system and air cleaner is plenty for a street bike. What year is your bike, is it a 1200 or an 883?
Being a 99, if your not going to have the heads ported l would go with a basic 1275 conversion. It's cheaper to do it all at once unless you don't mind taking it down several times. If you do port the heads l'd do a 1275 and change the cams. I personally like the 570 hammer cam at 10:1 compression. I like the the torque and power low to mid. The 560 cam at 10.5:1 is more power but it's mid to high rpm range.
Brother had '89 883 never a problem, '92 put Harley 1200 kit done by Harley shop, yes it had more power......couldn't keep a stator working and back tire went away fast.....it had sit for a long time, my next brother had it fixed as a 1200........stator Now I've had 2 883 both carb, never a problem......we have lots of curves and I never could see doing anything for more power......both got 10k+ on back tire BTW they (I think its S&S) make a 883-1400
That's really strange not being able to keep a stator in it, did you ever find out exactly why? Those 883's have different gearing in the primary which is awesome on the curvy roads. Mine has the taller gearing which is great on the interstate but you notice its downfalls around town.
@@GixxerFoo Last time it was x-harley shop mechanic..........him and everybody "that knows" says it couldn't be the 1200 kit.......but nobody got any better ideas......thats because everything has been changed, except taking it back to 883.....last time was a restoration and included heads, jugs, rings, pistons, stator, lights, wires,.......all electrical......2 days riding(easy riding like a new bike) and it was dead, checked stator.....bad I think its simply the '89 883 case wasn't meant to have a 1200 sitting on it.
@@rugershooter5268 That's crazy! Every now and again you find that one exception, l'd say there was something with it being a 1200 then. Yeah maybe those cases and that 1200 conversion weren't meant to be.
Your engine will be producing more power at any given RPM, an 883 say at 7,000 rpm is making 45 horsepower. You add a 1275 kit with your pipes, air cleaner and tuner you would be making 85 horsepower at 7,000 rpm.
I have a front primary pulley that I have sitting in my garage that's one tooth down for my 1200. I'm trying to figure out how to get the stupid thing off. It didn't budge with a 5 foot breaker bar, I guess I have to borrow someones 50 gallon air compressor and 1/5" impact.
My 2015 883, has sat for a year after I slid it and cracked the primary cover. I got all the parts to fix everything and an oil change kit. Is there anything else I should do to the bike before running it? Or to get it running back right?
Did you leave any fuel in the bike? If you did, I would drain the tank and go back with fresh fuel with some fuel system cleaner. Fuel system cleaner will help with the injectors if they are a bit sticky, Lucas would be a good one to use, I usually put about a half ounce in on my wife's 2.1 gallon tank.
So hey I like the 1275 kit idea... but what about my stock parts that I will be running it from? ( like mentioned in the video the cams etc) will that 1275 kit be well maintained or in other words will it break my 883 later down the road
The stock bottom end on a Sportster is pretty stout, the only thing you want to upgrade in the process in the oil pump gear drive to a bronze gear drive. Buell had issues with the steel gear getting sharp and coming apart with the increased power. But it really all depends how your ride, Hammer says they are just as if not more reliable than stock.

The same gaskets for whichever head you have will still fit, 883 stock, ported or 1200 heads. There's not a special gasket for a big bore kit, that's the cool part about these kits.
Ok in 2009 I got a wild hair an purchased an 883 Iron. I converted it to a 1200 with a racing tuner vance and hines short shots. At Harley D Michigan City IN. I get it, lol l used to ride a GSX-R 1000 and l thought Harley people were nuts. 😆😂 now l ride them, it's just completely different power delivery. You're making peak torque in a hurry and it's really surprising how hard a Harley will pull out of the hole.

@@GixxerFoo Thanks, man. Yeah and I just completed the 500 mile break-in, and then opened it up a bit. Far more power than I was actually expecting, tons of torque and it's crazy over 3500rpm.
You can't beat Cometic gaskets, the factory Harley gaskets sometimes fail with increased compression. Sounds like you have quite a build going.

@@Partyatmosphere It's true that there are many fast and cheap bikes, and it's not hard to find one with high power and high rpm, but you can't find one that is more handsome than Harley, highly customizable, and can satisfy over 100 horsepower with extremely low rpm.

I have done the Hammer 1275 but went all out with cams and porting on heads. It will turn your sporty into a monster!
What brand of kit did you use? I know Hammer stresses really hard to do it yourself and install it to the letter by their instructions, especially how it's broke in.
1200 cc is a Market sell,,,,,,883 cc started in '57,,and is still here,,,,it is a perfect bore and stroke, perfect motor, that's why its still here.
It's a rock solid motor and design, the extra power of the 1200 is really nice though!
As a reference point my new stock '99 BuellX1 Lightning 1200 dynoed at 94hp torque 74. After Buell racing exhaust and power comander 101hp.
Damn that's a pretty good gain with exhaust and a tune very solid.
The engines in the buells were not your run of the mill sportster engine. Buell did a lot to them. The later xb12s, xb12r, and xb12t has a 1203cc version that produced 103hp stock. I would love to get my hands on one of those.
I will go with the Hammer kit!
It's hard to beat! I've looked at some others that are floating around out there like from NRHS and Revolution. They just aren't as good in my opinion and they don't have the options Hammer has. More expensive too from some companies for only a 1250 kit.

Especially if your doing a hotter cam. The energy one clutch is plenty good they use Alto clutch fibers .can't wait to get it above 3000 rpm

@@GixxerFoo IIRC...the gearing in the 883 transmission is a little lower than the 1200 tranny also!!
The Harley Sportster 883 and 1200 have the same transmission gears, but the 1200 has a different number of teeth on the transmission pulley. The 883 has a lower gear ratio than the 1200, which means it accelerates faster but has more difficulty at high speeds.

The 1275/1250 kits from hammer are also $300+ more...BUT after paying harley for labor, it's probably less expensive after all
Their kits a lot cheaper than the Screamin Eagle Stage IV, for what Harley wants for their kit Hammer will get you over 100hp.
It's not really $300 more, because there's more in the HAMMER package. For example, you get a full Dynojet Powervision tuner, you get a full extra plate clutch kit, etc. So it's not apples to apples.

I did the hammer 1250, just amazing difference in power, you need to upgrade clutch or she’s gonna slip
Clutch upgrade is highly recommended, even with the 1200. It's pretty much mandatory on the 883 since I believe they use one less clutch plate or two.
thank you so much, this is question that i had for a lifetime! i thought i can only convert my 883 to 1200 and 1200 only to stage 4 that is unfair, thank you so much
You're welcome, honestly the 1275 or 1250 is what the stage 4 should be. The 883 is same bottom end, cases and transmission. 883 just has smaller displacement cylinders, pistons and different cylinder heads.
Awesome information, as The other popular kit is the S&S Kit.
S&S makes a solid kit and it produces good power, l wish they had the highlighted cylinders as an option.
Did this to my 883 and I can keep up or do better than the big boys!
This would be awesome on an 883, no one expects it and the insurance company still has the 883 vin number!
Had some genius on facebook tell me doing a 1250 and insuring it a 883 was insurance fraud. Lol. My ins knows its there from declared value, cant change the frame vin.
Yeah it's still an 883 as far insurance is concerned since they go by the vin. Now if you have a turbo you might disclose that 🤷♂️😆

For this reason, I'm big on stock.....well not just this reason.
That's really a curiosity since the bottom ends are the same on both the 883 and 1200. There's got to be something electrical causing the stator to fail. I'm just guessing here but maybe a wire was nicked during install and power is going to ground somewhere.

The worst thing about a stiffer clutch spring how hard it is to pull the clutch lever. I bought a used 883 converted to 1200. The seller said Harley did it with their own parts. It depends where you live, some states are really strict about emissions. You can use a hammer kit on the street and still have a very reliable bike if you're able to tune it to their specs. Crazy!
It's nuts! Lol yeah UI is a little lacking but they do that in house too. Lol not not bad for some machinists and engine builders.
heres the big question,, my stock 2003 883 is getting 45 mpgs,,,,how much worse will the mpgs get if the motor is punched out to 1275?
It depends how you ride it, you get more power at any given throttle position by using less throttle. Mileage usually goes down as a result of enjoying the power, but conservatively ridden it should get about the same.
Love Sportsters, I had to let it go though for a smoother ride. My Roadking ain't as fun though.
Road King has gotta be like riding on a cloud compared to the Sportster. The new suspension on them is much improved but l'd like to try some aftermarket suspension.
@@GixxerFoo yep, I agree. The slammed look is cool but a set of ohlins would be very good.
@@rider14mcd63 Ohlins shocks make them ride like a dream!
@@GixxerFoo Revo fit even older 2005 and earlier, well worth it!
Hey Gixxer, great stuff thanks. I just bought a 2005 sporty 883 C but I find the seat is waay uncomfortable, I keep pushing myself back up and on top of the passenger seat... Am I alone in this? I am just under 6' and about 100kg. Tx bro
You're not alone, I have several aftermarket seats for my bikes and after long stretches I do the same thing myself.
A big bore Sportster 1250/1275 is a blast to ride.
just check your fork gaskets the suspension should be fine as long as your not leaking hydraulic fluid
I want to do the 1275 with the heads
You need a very large cam to take advantage of those heads.
I've fitted the wiseco forged aluminum 1200cc kit on my 808 883 loved it laterbon i fitted a set of cams put the biggest that i could plus changedthe injectors now m y little 883 is a rocketputs a smile on my dial every ride , idon, tregret a dollar of it these bikes kittedout scare the crap out of the japasawki bikes offf of the stop light drags yes sirgreat fun
Oh yeah they frickin pull hard kitted out! If you look at the power curve it's like having power all time!
And You still can't keep up with the foreign bikes can you? Especially on the curves
So what about the S&S 1200 kit vs the HD 1200 kit?
Would this affect the reliability? I'm wanting to put the hammer kit in my 05 883, but dont want to sacrifice reliability
No issues with reliability, Hammer makes a solid kit and just a bolt on 1275 kit with cams isn't even gonna be close pushing the boundries of a stock Sportster bottom end.
Hi just an advise I hope you can help with your exporters I have 2016 CVO 110 deluxe I more power out of it with reasonable price
i got an 883 i seen 1200 motors for 5-600bucks i think ill just change the motor out for half the price
I'm finishing up a hammer 1275 kit this week
👍 that's awesome, what all did you go with doing your 1275?
@@GixxerFoo just the basic 1275 kit
Converting an 883 or a 1200?
@@GixxerFoo 883 to 1275 the 883 head make more compression than the 1200 heads
That's gonna be quite the jump in power. Do you have those trick reverse dome pistons?
@@GixxerFoo thank you! That's exactly what I needed to know
I've actually reached out to them regarding their kits you can look them up on TH-cam aswell they have a dyno video of their 1250 kit hitting a peak horse power of 126hp and 98 ft-lbs of tourqe but that the full kit not the basic kit like he showed in this video
Searched site
Saw an option for a 120+hp
They can do it, they've had a bike pull over 130hp with one of their kits.
GixxerFoo it’s a 1999 883. Thanks for the reply btw really helpful!
Brother had '89 883 never a problem, '92 put Harley 1200 kit done by Harley shop, yes it had more power......couldn't keep a stator working and back tire went away fast.....it had sit for a long time, my next brother had it fixed as a 1200........stator
Now I've had 2 883 both carb, never a problem......we have lots of curves and I never could see doing anything for more power......both got 10k+ on back tire
BTW they (I think its S&S) make a 883-1400
That's really strange not being able to keep a stator in it, did you ever find out exactly why? Those 883's have different gearing in the primary which is awesome on the curvy roads. Mine has the taller gearing which is great on the interstate but you notice its downfalls around town.
@@GixxerFoo Last time it was x-harley shop mechanic..........him and everybody "that knows" says it couldn't be the 1200 kit.......but nobody got any better ideas......thats because everything has been changed, except taking it back to 883.....last time was a restoration and included heads, jugs, rings, pistons, stator, lights, wires,.......all electrical......2 days riding(easy riding like a new bike) and it was dead, checked stator.....bad
I think its simply the '89 883 case wasn't meant to have a 1200 sitting on it.
@@rugershooter5268 That's crazy! Every now and again you find that one exception, l'd say there was something with it being a 1200 then. Yeah maybe those cases and that 1200 conversion weren't meant to be.
Will doing this make your engine run down three times as fast?
Your engine will be producing more power at any given RPM, an 883 say at 7,000 rpm is making 45 horsepower. You add a 1275 kit with your pipes, air cleaner and tuner you would be making 85 horsepower at 7,000 rpm.
I have a front primary pulley that I have sitting in my garage that's one tooth down for my 1200. I'm trying to figure out how to get the stupid thing off. It didn't budge with a 5 foot breaker bar, I guess I have to borrow someones 50 gallon air compressor and 1/5" impact.
Holy crap the nut won't budge?? I haven't messed with the pulley yet but it might be reverse threaded.
They are reverse threaded
@@douglasshaw1946 Oh yeah, I know that.

What all are you gonna go with for a setup?
@@GixxerFoo going from 883 to 1275 with Barnet extra clutch plate kit and race Pro spring 👌
That's the way to do it, are you doing any head work or adding cams too?
How about the temperature ? Will it run hotter ?
They really don't run hot surprisingly, you get them properly tuned and getting enough fuel they do very well.
lowbrow does a great 3 part vid on installing a kit

Hi I've got the 1250 hammer kit on my 883, just wondering what head gasket will fit now.
It was a rocket from 0-50 mph even rice rockets were saying what the f#@#%k. My dyno was like 74 hp and tq around 77 . Did not matter I was 49 y/o and the ride sucked!!!!! I paid it off and then it sat in my garrage for five years. A total waste of $12500 bucks!!
Owning a R1 making twice that is crazy.
I get it, lol l used to ride a GSX-R 1000 and l thought Harley people were nuts. 😆😂 now l ride them, it's just completely different power delivery. You're making peak torque in a hurry and it's really surprising how hard a Harley will pull out of the hole.
@@GixxerFoo when you get a little older and wiser you realize that there is nowhere any sane person needs a liter bike that isn't a race track. As the old saying goes, it is much more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.
@@SpellboundStats Lol that's why l ride Harleys now, you get that power down low and to the mid range. You don't have to wind it to the moon to get it. You're right, on track days you'd see guys on 300 Ninjas turning faster lap times than guys on litre bikes.
@@GixxerFoo I have owned and ridden a lot of bikes over the years including a few harleys (heritage softail, cvo fatboy, dyna glide, sporty 1100) My favorite bike to date was a 2004 Honda FZR800 Interceptor. I am shopping my next bike and have it narrowed down to Honda CB650, Ninja 650 and Ninja 400. I also want to test ride a Yamaha MT-07. I wouldn't pay the Harley tax and like something a little more versatile as I only have room for one bike.
