I bought the book immediately after listening to this episode. I couldn't put it down. And I couldn't stop thinking about it. I still am. This story is a part of me now.
Addendum to my comment: I also read "Prosecuted But Not Silenced" and thought WOW. this bears so many similarities to Dead Dog Road. I highly recommend that read to everyone.
I will *NEVER* understand why all the various child protection agencies have mission statements that are centred around "rehabilitation of the parent(s) struggling in their role as a parent," rather than the actual protection of the children.
Laine did not make the statement that if someone cares about animal abuse, they don't care about child abuse. She said sometimes it seems that people care more about abuse of animals than children, because animals have better legal protection, and she's demonstrably right. Think about how much easier it is to defend animal rights than child rights. The email Ms. Black got from someone worried about reading her book because it might contain graphic descriptions of animal abuse is what prompted Laine to make her comment, for context. This person wouldn't mind reading about child abuse, but animal abuse would be too much for them.
I cannot find this book in an accessible format. Ie audible ect. so yeah. I am confused on how I can get my hands on it. I wouldn't be able to get a braille edition. audible doesn't have it. things arent clear if national library service for the blind and physically handycapped would ever get it.
We also need to put a stop with trying kids as adults in the court system as well, no kid under 18 understands there crime, they might know the simple definition of its wrong to steal and what have u but not giving them rights like adults but being able to say u understand wat u did and given an adult sentence is infuriating
Love this podcast. I have been a fan for a long time and I will continue to be a fan . But with respect plz tone down the music. It's horrible. I love you But the music is horrible Thank you 😊
I care if animals are being abused, but that DOESN'T mean that I don't care if children are being abused. I think that your statements that some people seem to care more about animals being abused than children being abused is WHOLLY INACCURATE and UNFAIR!!! Children and animals are both sentient beings and I'm sure that people who give a damn about animal abuse most definitely care if a child is being abused!!!
I agree. I don’t feel like people deserve to be shamed for their triggers. There’s so many reasons why people might be especially bothered by animal abuse. If people are attempting to make an effort to learn about this particular subject matter, they probably have empathy for these children, an an intense aversion to animal abuse doesn’t negate that. It’s really important that people take the time to learn about child abuse cases and I feel like shaming comments like that will only alienate people and prevent the he spread of awareness. I also find it frustrating to hear them talk about how easy it is to have animal abuse situations handled, because in my experience that hasn’t been the case. I’m sure laws vary from state to state but I had a neighbor that had basically my whole neighborhood reporting their dogs being neglected and abused and literally nothing was ever done about it and nobody could do anything about it. That comment irked me. I love this podcast and don’t normally feel this way.
I agree!!! As a huge animal advocate I can say I personally care if anyone is abused. Man, woman, child, or animal it doesn’t matter. If you’re unable to show love and empathy for one, you’re unable to show love or empathy for the others. Anytime I know of animal abuse I want to immediately know what condition their children are in? Is there anyone else in their care? As far as I’m concerned if you’ll abuse an animal you’re capable of anything and I don’t trust u with any living breathing being.
@@lorijane2003 I agree!!! I do occasional puppy bottle feeding for a rescue and I hear of awful stories of animal abuse. Unlike in USA I have NEVER heard of anyone in South Africa (my country) ever being prosecuted for animal abuse. I don't believe anyone has any right to hurt another sentient being. And as you say if anyone is hurting an animal you need to be seriously worried about any other sentient being being around the animal abuser.
I apologize if that's how it came off; I certainly didn't mean that everyone who cares about animal abuse doesn't care about child abuse. I care about animal abuse myself! However, I do defend my statement that "some people" do care more about animal abuse than child abuse, just as the reverse is likely true.
States give adoptive parents a heafty checlk each month to the adoptive parents and if a child is diegnosed as handycap or a IEP student they get big checks every month i til the child turn 18 my sister adopted 3 kids
I wish she would stop interrupting SO MUCH ( Literally EVERY Chance she gets)..... FOR THE LOVE OF GOD Just LET THE LADY TALK!!!!!!!!! you don't always have to comment after every she takes a breath 🤦♀you're more worried about what you're going to say next and putting your 2 cents in, instead of actually LISTENING!! Sometimes ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS JUST SIT BACK AND JUST LISTEN
Hey there... you know this is edited, right? I remove a lot of unnecessary spaces between words/sentences for time and clarity. I frequently remove my comments (such as "mhm," "right," etc) altogether. However, in this episode, the program I use to record these conversations was acting poorly and wouldn't give me individual audio files for each participant, so I just had the stereo mix to work with, which meant it was much harder to edit out those kind of comments. For context, the full conversation I had with Diane was 2 hours long.
It breaks my heart this channel works so hard, for so many others. Thank you STLC.

Same!! It's one of the most amazing books I've ever read. Diane Black is one of my personal heroes now. Thanks for the recommendation!
omg, bless this woman's heart, i pray she has a good life and good karma for being such a wonderful person.

Never heard on this case, thank you💗
The first thing that needs to change with CPS is calling ahead of time. Just show up & you'll see the real deal!
Thank you for the animal abuse clarification. Finally someone who understands that some people are triggered by this!

Thank you so much for this upload. I'm only 8 minutes in and I have major Hart family vibes from this story so far

Thank you 😊
Disagree. The music sets a tone for the stories and is sparsely used.
@@BrokeNekiNeko I didn't mean the music wasn't good. Just the sharp tone.

Foster parent here.... it is far from a healthy check. Could you live on $ 1.50 a day monthly??? Just curious...

I feel this is more of a conversation than an interview. Conversations aren't usually one sided. I personally enjoyed the back and forth
