  • In this video, I show you my process for making a tooled leather shavekit. These toiletry bags are good projects whether you are new to leatherwork or a seasoned veteran. They are great sellers as well.
In the video I walk you through my entire process of making the shavekit as well as tell you the different weights of leather used to make it. I also have a companion pattern pack that goes with this video if you would like to purchase that. It contains all the cut patterns as well as six different tooling patterns. If you would like to purchase the companion pattern pack you can do so on our website using this link:
    dgsaddlery.com/...
If you enjoyed this video, please like and subscribe to this channel. And if you would like to see more tutorials and information like this or would like to see what other types of patterns we have available visit our website at:
    dgsaddlery.com/
The music in this video was performed and produced by my brother Ben Schane. If you would like to to hear more of his music you can find his music on itunes. The song in this video is from his album "Antique Noises."

Great video Don. I’ve been making leather products for over 40 years. Every time I watch your video I learn something new. I’ve never made a saddle, but I’ve repaired a lot of harness gear for the family ranch. I love your common sense approach to construction… I’m a huge fan! Thank you for helping the leather trade improve…. Jim’s Leatherworks, Prescott, Az…..

I've been doing this a while and I believe Don has as much artistic and craft knowledge as I have ever seen. His explanations as he works are very good - in short he is an extremely good teacher and we all should pay attention. Great job!! PS - yes the music is top notch.

A soft charcoal pencil or moistened chalk works well to mark leather. Chalk of different colors can be used to on similarly colored leather to prevent a very noticeable mark. They both can be removed with a moistened rag or horse hair brush.

Don, this was a really great video. As a hobbyist, it was really nice to see some of the mechanics involved with using the sewing machines. Thanks for that. There isn't nearly enough of that on TH-cam. It's always people just sewing on scraps. Your presentation of the steps and materials was flawless. It was also nice to see how you just kind of jumped in and manhandled the material when needed. I'm always kind of shy about that. Your tooling is beautiful. The music is great. But it comes across very loud in this video. I found myself having to the volume up and down during the video. (Just production critique). Anywho, I hope to see many more videos from your new shop. You really did a great job. I hope this encourages you to make more videos. I would love to just see an assembly video of a saddle going together for curiosity's sake. With just music would be fine. I hope you make more tooling videos as well. Your mannerisms and style really come across well on camera. Be confident and please please continue.

Happy Thanksgiving Don. Nice video. I've been doing a bunch of bags with zippers lately. I was gluing but switched to basting tape. I found a super sticky one that'll stick to both fabric and leather well as long as you don't re-position too much. For me it's easier to keep things a little cleaner. You can press it down very lightly and then when you're happy with the position go ahead and press it firmly. I haven't had any issues with the tape gumming up needles either.

I actually got mine from Springfield leather. It is super sticky. Just search for "basting tape" on their website. They have it in 1/4" and 1/2" width. Works well on cloth or leather.
