L = Load weight (how many kg you are allowed to load the trailer with). Those numbers are not dimensions.
T = Total weight (the maximum total weight of a loaded trailer including the load).
So, you can always calculate the unloaded weight of the trailer by subtracting L from T.

16:15 I bet that ID buzz would be very close to the battle with Tesla m3. Currently, the charging curve of ID buzz is even slightly better than m3 if you look at nor to 80% time. Of course efficiency is paramount so a test is needed... Can't wait! As other cars concern, bmw iX should be competitive, as well as the new 2023 Fat E-tron.

Thank you for the great video, once again, you make the best EV videos out there.
I would love to see a trailer 1000 km challenge with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (preferably 2023 model, so 77 kWh as well as RWD and 19" tires). I think it would be one of the fastest, because of an efficient drive-train coupled with very fast charging but rather mediocre aerodynamics, so the range penalty from the bad aerodynamics of the trailer might not be so bad, just like with the ID Buzz. Maybe that would also be a great time to try out and rate the new battery preconditioning features of the e-GMP platform?
I think the range penalty while towing on the Model 3 or Model Y might be higher, just like it was with Optimus Prime.
I have often heard that towing efficiency is mostly dictated by the trailer, and not so much by the towing vehicle, which would support the aforementioned theories. Of course that only works with a similarly efficient drivetrain tho.
Overall tho, I think the fastest cars right now when towing a 1000 kg trailer might be BMW iX/EQS SUV, they should be pretty similar with 10-80% in 30 min and around 106 kWh usable battery capacity, giving them 300 km of range. New Audi Q8 E-Tron will probably be similar to the iX/EQS SUV and 2023 KIA EV9 might also be interesting for towing, when it is available.

For the towing speed I say Model Y as the extra roof height should work well. Charge port and charger position would probably make a big difference, you need a combo that can charge without unhitching.

4:40 you shouldn't test with hazard lights because you will not know if left signal is swapped with right. Just 3 days ago I was following a car with trailer and the trailer cable was wired incorrectly. When car signaled left, trailer signaled right.

So far my conclution have been that the price of e-cars with the towing capasity I need, and the range I would like, is none existing, but maby things are about to change

Note on checking the lights on the trailer after connection: My ID.4 actually tells me when some lights do not work when e.g. the bulb is kaputt. I suspect other cars will as well. I don't know how exactly (I suspect they measure continuity of the Pins to ground) but it's pretty handy. However you should still check manually.

Would be interesting to compare ev's with 1400+ kg trailer capacity (model y, ev6, ioniq 5, eqa, eqc, polestar, ex40, id4/5 gtx, enyaq) hooked up with a horse carrier. Without load it will be around 800 kg and if you can find a horse as well it will be around 1300 kg. In any event it will be with a massive drag, due to the hight of the trailer.
Range is a bit more essential as you may not be able to charge with a horse in the back 😉

Hi Bjørn! nice test. could you eventually test the cargo version of the Citröen spacetourer? in some countries is called e-Jumpy or Dispatch but should be the same can as spacetourer and I guess it should be with the bigger battery (75 kW). there are already some campervan builds for that Citröen and so it would be nice to check on that van vs id buzz (cargo) because they eventually even sell for the same price more or less. If you do test it, I would ask, if possible, to focus also on the comparison of the comfort on using the auto steering on those two van's (VW vs Citröen) :)
thanks for so many EV tests. It's really great to get all that data and your opinion too.

I've got the peugeot e-expert, same as the citroen. It's a Great van, but much bigger cargo capacity than the buzz, the buzz is the same cargo dimensions as the partner/berlingo L2.
I don't think it has any auto driving functions though. It has a lane departure warning in the optional safety pack, but i think it's just a vibration in the steering wheel and maybe a noise warning. I don't think it keeps the van in the lane.

Also, it would be interesting to see a camper with the maximum allowed weight behind an electric car. Auto Motor und Sport (german car magazin) did such a test a few years ago. But they cheated, because they are petrol heads. It was a big camper behind Model X, and they had an 100 km/h Sticker on the camper. So I guess they went 120 km/h on the german autobahn. @@matthiashejlskov5008 correct, not in Sweden. But in Norway, Denmark, Germany, don't know where else. There are som requirements, the trailer needs to be inspected, it needs suspension, depending onweight it needs a stability coupler, the tires can't be too old and so on... But it is possible, at least in parts of Europe.

In Europe, we use the cable he showed. It should be attached to the vehicle, not around the tow hook. If the tow hook breaks, the cable activates the trailer brakes. It doesn't keep the trailer attached to the vehicle

Last time when I pulled a trailer in my Model 3 LR the consumption was pretty ok, around 200wh/km but that was driving 80-90kph and on the right lane of the Autobahn so there were also many Trucks driving there, but I was still impressed with the consumption and it was a big boxy 750kg trailer taller than the car.

I'd bet either EV6 or maybe even the ID Buzz. Because the trailer has so bad aerodynamics a taller vehicle with decent aero for its height might decrease the consumption. All the aerodynamic properties of eg. the EQS will be completely wasted with a big box behind

The weight is really nothing for the electric motor. I wonder why they have such low tow weights.
I have the e-expert, and even towing 1200kg once i forgot to put it in the power mode because i didn't feel the weight of the trailer at all.
But considering the diesel expert can tow 2 tons with the same power engine i don't get why it's only 1 ton with the electric.
The kangoo e-tech gets 1500kg with a weaker motor though. 😅

    Nice video 👍
Good thing it's possible to use autosteer in the VW.
Tesla autopilot has a lot of room for improvement! It should be able to use lane assist in Tesla as well just as you can use adaptive cruise control only.
When you say Tesla can do some evasive maneuver, that is not completely true. My silly TMY autopilot try to force the car directly into potholes, and when I want to turn slightly to avoid it, the autopilot is fighting me because it want the car to drive straight into the obstacle in the road or pothole. All of a sudden it suddenly let go making the car turn across the lanemarking.
Since the road here in the country Europe where I live is so full of small rocks and potholes in the road I end up not using autopilot almost at all. Also the stupid pingpong sound it makes all the time is ridiculous and I hate it. I wish Tesla could extend the Joe mode to feature all sillysounds.
I miss lane assist in my old Ioniq 😥And ventilated seats 😥And adjustable regen 😥And no stupid pingpongsounds 😥
But at least Tesla has focused on implementing the very important farting sound...
