    I converted my old mountain bike to a 800W 36v Ebike for around $400. I got the rear wheel ebike kit for $200 and the battary for $200. I installed it all by myself. I saved around $1500.

    I recently rode an e-trike, the HP Velo Scorpion... Holy crap, I've never wanted a bike so much in my life. I recently broke my femur and have been struggling to get exercise while it heals. Granted I didn't feel like I was doing much work, but it was a pure joy to ride.

    Hi there bicycle riders, I own an electric bike since three years and I simply enjoy all my traveling miles. It allows you to rest when you get exhausted and you can enjoy the scenery much more and stay longer outdoors. I recommend electric bikes to everyone that can afford it.

    I ride an electric bike because it's FASTER. If you know basic bike maintenance skills, you can make an ebike for around $800 with lithium ion batteries. Buy a rear wheel hub motor, 1hp (750w) is the sweet spot, bolt it on and attach the battery and controller. I use an ebike to commute about 160km (100 miles) per week.

    These seem only good for old people. If you're young you'd be amazed how far you can go on a bike.
    Several years ago me and my mate attempted to ride regular bikes from his house in one town to another town 26km away (16 miles). He rode his super heavy steel frame BMX with no brakes and I rode my kinda heavy mountain bike with 27 gears. We just wore regular cloths and I took a 2.25L Coke in my backpack.
    There was 2 big hills on the trip. The kind with really long low gradients which I hated, I wish they'd just have a super steep gradient and get it over with quickly. Up hill having all those gears didn't seem to give me much of an advantage over his BMX with 1 gear but on the flat I was just blazing away, I'd have to stop wait, have time to take my bag off, have a few drinks, then he'd finally catch up. That BMX is just no contender for my 27th gear.
    The trip was supposed to take all day if we made it at all but we got there rather quickly and ended up running out of stuff to do at the destination. We did all their bike trails, I think we must have gone down every street, went up and down the beach. The journey there was supposed to be the main thing that day but was actually really short. I think we must have clocked 50km (31 miles) by the end of the day from riding around the town.
    Maybe we need a more challenging trip?

      WE ALL HAVE THOSE STORIES... I walked 72 miles in two days straight from London north towards Scotland, straight up the M1, with a backpack!, until a cop stopped me and told me walking along the M1 was illegal, so I took the train the rest of the way to Edinburgh. I have lots of stories like that... YOUTH!! Nonetheless, having an electric motor on a bike can be scaled up CHEAPLY to a very nice trail bike, and although you can still argue about the manual models, kids are going nut for them!

    I suppose everyone has their motives for riding: Commute from point A to point B, physical conditioning, competitive racing, etc. This is nice addition to the bicycling world. I would love to see more people in my area (Los Angeles) get out of their car and on a bike. Less traffic, less pollution, less money needed for bigger and better road projects, less noise, better fitness, and most importantly, MORE ACCEPTANCE!

  • @StarEssences
    @StarEssences 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The problem with a lot of these electric bike conversions is that for those who cycle for fitness, yet might need a little extra boost in going up the hills; the electric conversions are way too big, bulky, and ADD a lot of unwanted additional weight to the bike, meaning making regular pedaling a little harder than before they had the e-conversion kit placed on their bikes. The goal for these innovators should be; compact and lightweight. (such as the Add-e unit)

  • @Hirotoro4692

    I did that and the savings weren't massive. I had to buy a two pannier racks (first broke) pannier bag, battery, hydr brakes as my old ones weren't up the task, new shifters because I had to drop the cassette and get a freewheel, new cables...
    Then there's the fact I had to keep making trips to the local shop because problems kept arising during building. Had to search for a day to find a very VERY specific-sized shim as my freewheel caught on the motor, jamming the chain.
    The list goes on.

    For people saying they'd rather buy a car... Would a 3000-4000 come with an engine? I mean you could get a car and it might even run, but for how long? You'll spend a fortune getting it street legal. Then you have to register it, which means a week at the DMV. Then the insurance, and finally, you have to put gas in the thing. A car costs around 9000 per year. Personally, I'd rather have the E bike. For cyclists saying, it's lazy. I have three words... 20 mile commute. Not everyone sees a bike as a gym on wheels. For me a bike is practical transportation, which it was always meant to be. It's the clowns dressed in lycra on a carbon fiber road bike that I can't stand. A good bike has a rack, fenders and a decent chain guard. *I* don't need an E bike because there aren't many hills where I live. I wouldn't attempt to ride a regular bike in San Francisco.

      You have to admit it's sad that a $3500 e-bike only goes 20 mph when I average 22-24 mph under my own power on a normal road bike.

    • @Kevin15047
      @Kevin15047 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MelkorHimself Good for you but I'd have to be pretty desperate to get somewhere fast to ride a road bike. Personal preference. Give me a Gazelle Toer Populair any day. That's an oma/opafeits, the quintessential Dutch bike. Also, *you* may be able to average 22-24 mph on your own, but that wouldn't really help, say my father who will be 54 this week and has COPD. The point of an electric bike, and I'm going by the Netherlands here, is to get where you're going, in a suit and tie or whatever you wear, and not look like you just ran a marathon and be drenched in sweat when you get there.

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MelkorHimself Well that is due to the law not the bike, the bikes can go much faster but if you want to remain legal you stick within the law, EU bikes are worse.

    I bought a 'wayscral' e-bike in 2014, for 389 €, cheapest on the market & it goes 40 km on 1 charge, 3 assistence levels, 15, 20, and 25 km an hour. It's made in France. It was a first try for an e-bike and it still keeps running :) why spend 3500 if you can get 1 for 389?

    • @You-Toober
      @You-Toober 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen some NICE E bikes for $3500! Wow! Beautiful bikes! No, it's not the cheapest, i understand. But the workmanship, the quality of the parts, and the "fun factor" of the pricier bikes, would make it worth it.
      And some people have / make serious money to afford it. Not me, but if i did have that kind of money....

    i used to ride a MTB, replaced it with a E-bike, won't go back lol. There is a fair bit of misconception that alot of people think E-bikes are for lazy people. alot of the e-bikes (BH, Gepida) require you to pedal for the motor to assist you. if you want a bit of a exercise or workout just pedal harder or you can take it easy and just cruise. there has been times that i've come home sweaty.
    sure for the price i paid for mine i can get a cheap scooter (which i don't even want), Scooter requires rego, petrol, more expensive servicing and your not allowed to ride in the bicycle lane.

      The bike shops inflate the price for insurance basically. You pay for the bike and they will support it until its completely unusable. Which involves servicing the motor, battery and troubleshooting issues that an end user will unlikely be able to solve themselves. You can build an ebike for $600 using a kit called the hilltopper which easily competes with $2000 ebikes because its basically a wheel that plugs into a battery.

    Consider the legality of using e-bikes on bike paths in your area. The trail I use to commute to work does not allow any motorized traffic, which includes e-bikes (electric wheelchairs are the one and only exception). One benefit of commuting by bike is exercise. E-bikes reduce that benefit, and put out more pollution and waste thanks to the battery. I buy a week's worth of groceries, load it onto my bike trailer, and haul it 10 miles home, without any electric assist. Was it difficult at first? Heck yeah. After months of training on-road and at the gym? Not so much. I rock an old mountain bike with a 22/32/42 crankset with a custom built 7-speed cassette (14-32). Plug in some fast paced music and spin up those hills. It has helped me improve my physical conditioning, to become a stronger cyclist.

    • @dustystahn3855
      @dustystahn3855 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bet you aren't 87 like I am and don't live in the mountains. I have a mid drive E-bike as my only transportation. I ride up hills that other people push their bikes up. I have a choice of riding it as a regular bike, power assist or power only and can choose how much effort I want to expend to keep in shape.
      I built E-bikes from individual components and Kits for twenty years. I paid $3000 for my bike. If I had bought the components and built it it would have cost $4000. If I include the value of my time, it would have cost $5000 or more.

    As I am now setting up my trike with a electrical assist as where I live in Red Bluff where you are either going up a hill or going down a hill. The nightmare begins I need to custom rig the wiring with little or no help from where I bought it from. What I would like to see in a trike is a custom setup for electrical assist, front and rear disk brakes and lights. Now you have something for people who can’t ride a regular bicycle and need a workhorse to do day to day needs. Why disk brakes? Its gets a little scary going down hill with the standard brakes on a trike.

    E-bikes are for many a good alternative to always using a car. The problem is the ready to go E-bikes costs a bit too much. For those who are relatively handy can do a conversion. That's the route I went and it cost me about $800 because I already had the battery charger with power supply. Expect to spend a grand. My e-bike has a range of 25 miles while traveling at over 25 MPH. For the past year I've put on about 5500 miles on my e-bike and an equal amount driving my car.

      You can get as much exercise as you want on an ebike. They aren't motorcycles. Except on the expensive/illegal ones, the motors are relatively weak (less than 1 HP). You won't get far up a hill unless you are pedaling along with the motor. Their main benefit is to flatten out the hills a little, but you still feel it.

    As a E-biker myself, the range they posted in this video is assuming the rider is going slow (10 mph or less) and doing a whole lot of peddling. At $3000 that is a lot to pay which is one reason E-bikes have not caught on to those who do not do their own conversion.

    • @losttownstreet3409
      @losttownstreet3409 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll get a perfect bike with good parts and for e-bikes a test-report for the DMV, a license-plate-holder. The conversions are all limited to pedal assisted without a report for FCC, DMV, .... and don't need a insurance.
      Sometimes you'll not allowed to use your own converted bike.
      The video should start with the 500$ pedal assisted (hevy, short range, but enough for the most) and may not go so deep into electric motorbikes (heavy motorcycle license).

      ***** I think that hill I could probably sprint up that one, gradually grinding to a halt. Or climb it in the first gear and be puffed at the top, although I'm quite a fast cyclist (though no lance armstrong). I think the hill is about a 1 in 3 so it's a tough climb for a casual cyclist.
      My Giant Yukon would do it in the 22/34. I saw some videos of someone crawling up in an 8" gear which would be good if the hill was a mile long!
      That was a cringeworthy stall and dismount though

      WAJ Yep, no bias in THIS clip! LMAO! But there WAS possibly just a teeny weeny bit of reality in the cause of the fall (Goebbels, et al: "Every big lie must contain a smidgeon of truth.") She was given a bike with the saddle set so high it was virtually under her armpits and so could only reach the pedals by leaning the bike over - watch especially as she climbs on, nearly needed a step ladder! So, started off at the base of the hill, had no hope of building any momentum (even if she'd wanted to) and then...gravity predictably took over. The sham act is a pity since the ebike appeared to perform admirably, so didn't need the overtly poor attempt on the conventional bike. PS Have raced road bikes in my time but have no ebike experience so couldn't care either way really: to each their own. And if ebikes get people out in the open air who otherwise would be stuck non-mobilised in a car, that must be a good thing. But I WOULD appreciate the commuter types, apparently carrying their worldly belongings in an 80kg backpack, (legally) occupying the bus lane but plodding along at 10-15 km/h as the bus crawls its way in or out of the CBD - ALL getting ebikes if they MUST pedal to & from work. Can there be a minimum fitness level legislated in the same way that minimum driving skills are required for motor vehicles & bikes?! ;-)

      Yes. Imagine my delight when I found a small bike shop in Chicago (2015 June) anxious to liquidate his last $3,500 ebike. 37 miles on the odom. 2013 model. It was on C-list for 1,500 but I walked it out the door for 700 cash. I learned the small shops place a premium on space and keeping a bike around that was not selling costs him $$. Recently spent 1,200 on top-of-line replacement battery. Yikes. My next ebike will be converting my GIANT Talon. $600 for motorized rear wheel and 600 for battery. The kit includes all of the other components such as display, controller, etc.

    You took a non biker and gave her a biking segment...fail.
    A regular biker knows you get momentum for a hill and stand on pedals as you climb.
    I grew up at a bike shop. I would ride 40 miles a day to burn off my hyperness.
    I've demo'd 15 electric bikes in Vegas at Interbike.
    Only 3 impressed me. One was Pedego.
    They built a bike and added an electric assist motor.
    Other companies build a motorized bike that frankly, has enough power to offset it's clunky overall weight. Like riding a tandem with someone so you can drag a cinder block. Lose the cinder block, lose the second rider and it's a bike..what was the point?
    There are 3 types of electric bikes:
    1) Throttle assist (on demand power)
    2) Cadence assist (spin the pedal to fake it, adding minimal effort)
    3) Torque (sensor matches the "oomph" factor you input)
    Companies will use more than one category but not always successfully.
    Twist throttle assist is not good unless it's thumb paddle throttle. WHY?
    A motorcycle has a twist grip, youre right hand is occupied as acceleration.
    When you have to stop quickly, you can't release the twist motion then grab the brake handle using the same hand.
    So an electric twist throttle bike would have to be "cross wired" to be safe.
    Cross wiring is putting back brake on left side (not the standard bike's right side).
    This will confuse a bicyclist. They will be biking (no assist) and pull the wrong brake and flip or jackknife.
    REMEMBER: An electric bike is STILL JUST A BIKE...keep it that way.
    I could go on but then you'd never attend my [fictitious] seminar for $19.99 or buy my [unwritten] BIG BAD BIKER's book.
    Redheads are hot: Amy Davidson and Karen Gillan!

    No one is saying it needs to put out anywhere near the energy being put in, because that energy would be wasted otherwise. Lets say you were going down hill you would not need to use the electric motor at all but the spinning of the wheel could feed energy back into the battery. The goal of a generator in this situation is not to 'put out the same amount of energy it takes in' its to take otherwise COMPLETELY wasted energy and make some use of it. Google "regenerative braking".

You just replace the original rim and connect a couple of wires to the motor, control box,throttle, and battery and you are off and running down the road. What kind of system did you get?

    No bicycle is worth these price tags. Most of the designs shown here will be easily achieved with a little tinkering in your garage with a standard bicycle costing $400-$600. a few lawnmower batteries and motors from an electric mower for around $600. That's $1200-1400 for NEW PARTS and accessories at the worst! No one has a corner on electrified bikes and only an idiot would shell out this kind of money for an e-bike...

    Dont be sorry, but you're completely missing what he's saying.
    Perpetual motion means it's an action that could continue forever, in this case a bike moving, without any energy being put in or lost. That guy is not saying that is what would happen at all.
    What he is proposing is attaching a generator to a wheel or maybe even the pedal so the motion of wheel moving would HELP charge the battery, not that it would make it go forever or completely replace energy lost and keep the battery charged.
