We couldn't afford processed foods when I was young. We snacked on fruit from our orchard, chickens from our yard, veggies from our garden. We were RICH in nutritious food. Didn't realize this until I was an adult. Thanks, Mom and Dad!
No because this is pure propaganda and lies. I'll show you why this man can't be trusted and hopefully you open your eyes to see other people that are deceiving you. First he says that we are all getting fatter this is not true I'm not fatter I know a lot of people that are not fat, contrary to what the stereotype says most Americans are not obese. Explain why six year olds are obese because they're not going outside and playing like they used to. And their family gives them unhealthy stuff all the time like sodas and candy and chips and stuff. Because unhealthy stuff is cheaper than heathy stuff He also says that it is not the fault of the obese people it they are victims. This is not true even if what he was saying was true. You would still be the fault, even if he was right. because they're drinking all these sodas and everyone knows it bad for them and will make the fat. But he says what he says because he wants to elicit your emotions not your logic and obese people like being the victims. He also uses emotionally charged words like telling you how sugar is poison or that these things horrendous, or the Coca-Cola conspiracy. Or how he says everyone is getting bigger which is simply not true. Of course none of these people are eating less or exercising, but I'm sure that's just a coincidence. The real issue is that we don't understand the idea that you don't need to be full all time and we live too solitary a lifestyle. Also their metabolism.
I stopped eating sugar and drinking soda the weekend before Thanksgiving 2020. I started out at 212.8 pounds. I am down to 188.2 pounds, and I feel great. My doctor told me my blood sugar was at the level to be classified as a type 2 diabetic. That did it. I knew I had to change my diet. Sugar was my drug of choice. I have had issues with joint pain for years. I have arthritis, and being overweight for years, and the sugar made it worse. After stopping eating sugar, and losing the weight, my joints have stopped hurting. My mind is clear. I was having issues concentrating. Now I don't. I work 12 hour shifts. I used to feel wiped out by the end of my shift. Now I don't. My wife and I have started keto. She has gone from 235 down to 217. Her joint pain has stopped too. Sugar is poison. It's also addictive. It's literally killing people. Something must be done. Processed foods are formulated to be addictive. Eating healthy is expensive. Eating unhealthy is cheap. That's why poor people are overweight more than people who aren't poor. This has to change. Our society is being destroyed by sugar addiction. All kids should watch this video, as well as adults. Money is all that matters to the powers that be. Our health means nothing. Take control of your health people. It can be done. DO IT!!!!!
congratulations on making changes. I hope that you are able to continue on this path. It is inspiring that the joint pain can stop by cutting sugar out. I have just been diagnosed with arthritis at 52 and have terrible pain in the knees. Now I am inspired that I can live pain free again if I can resist the cravings for sugar. thank you for giving more details. Do you think cutting sugar helped more or doing keto was more helpful?
@@christineklem2099 I stopped eating sugar, and drinking soda before I got on the keto diet. My wife decided to do keto, so I am doing it with her. If I can do it, you can too.
My grandmother refused to buy soda. She always called it poison. She let us have it while visiting if we bought it but wouldn't allow it at the dinner table. She was health conscious! I truly thought she would live forever. Lived to age 98. 😍

The alcohol connection is one that really needs to be brought to the public's attention. Sugar is alcohol that doesn't make you drunk. Alcohol is rotten sugar that does. Saying it this way could blow a lot of minds.
+A Closer Look sugar feeds EVERY cell in the human body EVERY CELL in our body is fed by sugar but you can't name one cell that feeds on alcohol to say sugar is alcohol is no different than saying sugar is not the body's primary fuel source.
bud385 Actually fructose feeds practically nothing it's glucose that is used by our organs. And ethanol is just rotten fructose, as Dr. Lustig brilliantly illustrates.
+A Closer Look our bodies use fructose to make glucose to be burned as fuel for every cell & why did the brilliant Dr. Lustig not inform all that were listening in on that lecture that fructose is a simple sugar it has NO TIME to rot anywhere simple sugars are assimilated INSTANTLY by our bodies WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A VAPOR OF ONE DROP of insulin produced in order to metabolize? well of course he didn't tell anyone that because for starters he doesn't know what simple sugars are he probably correlates HIIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP with fructose in fruit because most people who think they know what they're talking about do what people need to understand is our body converts EVERYTHING we eat into sugar to fuel our bodies so our body is bad for us if Dr. Lustig is correct "good thing he has NO IDEA"
bud385 No he covers the fruit thing. The idea is that in nature fructose is found in plants with very high fiber density. The fiber inhibits the absorption of the fructose to a healthy rate. Refining the fructose without the fiber is what causes the negative feedback loop. All explained right here in this video you didn't watch.
+A Closer Look why wouldn't I have watched the video? oh yeah that's right because you said I didn't look Dr. Lustig doesn't KNOW JACK SQUAT when it comes to health & nutrition he's an endocrinologist you know how many seconds in school they spend on health & nutrition? the same amount of seconds the titanic floated yesterday.

Well, many of them are, but not all. It is a good rule of thumb, though, even if it is not 100% true. Natriumcarboxymethylcellulose, despite its ridiculous name, is completely safe. But the quality in your argument still holds, as it is almost impossible for a person to know all of these chemicals by heart, so it is better to avoid them, just to stay safe.

Here's my notes for the talk: There are many different types of sugars, but the ones you need to know about are: Fructose, Glucose, Sucrose, Lactose Leptin is a chemical that your body releases that reduces hunger. Ghrelin is a chemical that your body releases that increases hunger. Sucrose: - This is what cane sugar and beet sugar consists of. - Sucrose is a combination of Glucose + Fructose. -- Your liver will quickly break the bond between Glucose and Fructose. -- So each sucrose molecule results in your body getting 1 Fructose molecule (which is bad for you) and 1 Glucose molecule. -- So to understand the effects of sucrose (e.g. cane sugar), you need to understand what Fructose and Glucose do. -- So essentially there is almost no difference, chemically at least, between eating Sucrose (e.g. cane sugar) and High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). - Coca-cola is 10.5% Sucrose/HFCS. High Fructose Corn Syrup: - A mix of Fructose and Glucose molecules, each of which your body must then process. Glucose: - Suppose you consume 120 calories of Glucose (e.g. 2 slices of white bread). -- 80 - 90% of this Glucose will be used by all of the organs in the body. A small part of it will be turned into fat. --- In contrast, Fructose is only processed by the liver with a large part of it being turned into fat. -- Every cell in your body can use Glucose. Every bacteria in your body can use Glucose. "Every living thing on the face of the Earth can use Glucose". -- Liver cells release insulin which signals to your brain "stop eating". -- Thus Glucose consumption reduces hunger. Fructose: - Fructose (and consequently sucrose) is a poison. - Fructose is processed almost exclusively by your liver (in contrast to Glucose, which can be used by any cell of your body). - Fructose does NOT suppress Ghrelin (a "hunger hormone") - "Acute Fructose does not stimulate insulin (or leptin) release. -- "If insulin doesn't go up then leptin doesn't go up, and if leptin doesn't go up then your brain doesn't see that you ate something." - Fructose causes metabolic syndrome. - Fructose stimulates your liver cells to create new fat. Glucose does not do this. - Fructose causes insulin resistance in liver cells. -- Fructose causes more new fat to be created and more energy to be turned directly into fat. -- Fructose causes the pancreas to work harder and release more insulin. --- Higher insulin (if too high) cause the brain to not notice leptin as much as it otherwise would (this prevents hunger from being reduced). Fiber: - Fiber is (de facto) an essential nutrient. -- The government not listing fiber as an essential nutrient allows high fiber foods to be exported. - Causes your brain to receive the satiety signal sooner. - Causes an increase in Short Chain Fatty acids, which help to suppresses insulin (thereby reducing hunger). - "Reduces rate of intestinal carbohydrate absorption, reducing insulin." -- The bacteria in your gut consume the excess carbohydrates, which ultimately makes you pass gas. - Although fruit has sugar in it (Sucrose and Fructose), it has a lot more fiber than it has sugar so you don't gain nearly as much weight from eating fruit as you would from consuming the same amount of sugar in candy or a drink. Lactose: - Lactose is a sugar (not very sweet though). - In a milk that does not contain added sugar or chocolate, the sugar content of the milk (on the nutritional label) measures lactose (and not sucrose or fructose). -- So even though such milk has a large amount of sugar on its nutritional label, the milk doesn't make you fat like glucose or sucrose would. Recommendations for losing weight: - Get rid of sugared water -- Only water and milk. - Eat all carbohydrates with FIBER. - Wait 20 minutes before a second portion. Exercise: - Improves skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, which causes insulin to go down. (This reduces hunger). - Causes TCA cycle to run faster thereby "burning off" the chemicals that are used to produce fat. - Exercise causes weight loss primarily by increasing your metabolism and NOT by directly burning fat EDIT: (Added November 2021 - info. from Wikipedia articles "Sucrose", "Fructose", and "Fructolysis") - About 10% of the calories contained in the Western diet are supplied by fructose (approximately 55 g/day). - Fructose has 95% the caloric value of sucrose by weight. - "Fructose may provide **the bulk** of the carbohydrate directed toward de novo triglyceride synthesis (triglycerides are the main constituents of body fat in humans) in humans." [in short, "the bulk" of brand new fat that you gain comes from fuctose. So most of the fat currently on your body originated from eating fructose/sucrose.] ---- Under one percent of ingested fructose is directly converted to plasma triglycerides [but much more is INdirectely converted to triglycerides]. 29% - 54% of fructose is converted in liver to glucose, and about a quarter of fructose is converted to lactate. 15% - 18% is converted to glycogen. Glucose and lactate are then used normally as energy to fuel cells all over the body. - Unlike glucose, fructose dose not cause insulin to be secreted, and can in fact lower circulating insulin. - Fructose is almost entirely metabolized in the liver in humans, where it is directed toward replenishment of liver glycogen and triglyceride synthesis. In addition to the liver, fructose is metabolized in intestine, testis, kidney, skeletal muscle, fat tissue and brain, but it is not transported into cells via insulin-sensitive pathways - "Sucrose is a disaccharide made up of 50% glucose and 50% fructose" My own conclusion: So when you eat something that on the label says "16g of added sugar", then you may as well assume that a large percentage of that (at least a few grams) will be made into brand new fat stored somewhere in your body.
@@crand20033 Oh yes it is. Sugar is sugar and todays GMO fruit is nothing like the original fruit it came from. Look at pictures of water melon from 50 years ago and compare it to today. Todays fruit is basically candy and should be a very occasion treat, in season.

It also reminded me of how climate change works. The globe can handle forest fires and volcano eruptions without any problems, but a massive, everyday emission of carbon dioxide for centuries will leave its marks, just like the human body can handle a certain dosis of fructose or ethanol, but constant everyday consumption will ruin our metabolism.
Patrick that is called insulin resistance. Your body wasn’t allowing sugar to get into the cells. So you had extra sugar, glucose floating around in your system.
It WILL work for everybody. Know 2 other people who experienced the exact same thing. In women sugar causes PCOS which can lead to full blown infertility (looking at you, Whitney Way Thore).
I just graduated from Dietetics and Nutrition and I was not taught about how bad fructose is not until I took my internship in a Dialysis center and I had to do my research and then I was able to watch many presentations about liver and kidney diseases and the prevalence of obesity, it came always to high fructose diets. It really pains me to see parents feeding their children juice, which have very little fruit. I watched this even though a 6 years old. I loved it. Thank you. And I wish my biochemistry class was this fun 😂 Thank you!!!
This is a fantastic video. I’ve not had a soda or candy or junk food in 30+ years. I’ve eaten low carb/keto for 4-5 years. I feel great and can physically do things that many 30 year olds can’t do. I’m grateful to be backpacking, mountain biking, and snowshoeing with my 17 year old son.
Or because they heard him say that drinking 55 or 60 mg of sodium was like drinking a pizza and when they went to see how much sodium was in a pizza, they knew immediately that he didn't do his homework, which itself is kind of weird until you realize that he's an intellectual from San Francisco.
I lost 86 pounds in 10 months just by not eating refined sugar. DIdn't change *anything* else! I recognized a couple of years ago that I am a sugar addict. Don't know why it took me so long to see it, but once I began to treat my relationship to refined sugar like an addiction everything changed. God bless you, Dr. Lustig! Keep banging that drum!!
I just came back from a trip to Oaxaca where food is outstanding, real food. I ate A LOT, however, I lost weight, and experienced a sense of deep well being. I came back to the "civilized" world and I went to do some groceries, but left the store empty handed because it is evident all the food is so tainted I can hardly call it food at all. No wonder why there's not just an epidemic of obesity and CVD, but of lack of energy, depression, and overall malaise.
How well S.T. Coleridge spoke of Oaxaca in "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner": 'Water, water, every where / Ne any drop to drink'! And Big Coke's hostage-hold on Hispanics is metastatic...even in the U.S.!
Exactly, and this is why we need a coalition of people representing the mass population of all humanity in the world to have as their primary objective to do what is right, and good for the maintenance, benefit, prosperity, and well-being of all life on this planet, instead placing all of our trust into any single organization or one human that has a title of the president or king and or queen to determining whether we live or die. No one person should have such authority.
someone else mentions this above, such a powerful statement when you think about how often its not happening and just what that could mean to the childs trajectory
Mine was the same, I just learned to hide it when I ate stuff like that and ended up addicted anyways. I’m not sure if that method works for everyone tbh
When I was pregnant 25 years ago my doctor told me to read labels and if it had anything ending with o-s-e I could not have it. That was practically everything!!
I once stopped eating sugar for a 21 days, at first it was a hard thing for me, then my brain, my body lost weight and it felt so good, no sadness, no low stamina. I mean, my brain remembered things that I did when I was 2 years old. I still eat sugar, but I’m way too careful now. English is not my first language.
Your English is fine.. the grammar is good. And the message was very well stated....you see I just made an incomplete sentence!!! Writing and speaking are different.....
+Martinit0 I hear this a lot. It is kinda true. 80% of the american grocery store contains added sugars in the food products. I cut out soda, which was majority of my sugar intake, and I feel better. Things taste so much sweeter now, and I can't even drink coke anymore. lol
The bread is inedible it's so sweet. I hate sweet things and have a totally savoury sense of taste. Even fresh fruit tastes very sweet to me. Strangely, I hate chocolate. I hate it so much I even hate the smell of it.
Morning David . When you give up on sugar you will get the cravings for at least 6 weeks . I suppose like smoking . I found out I had type one diabetes at 17 - I’m now 51 and struggle every day . If we live on a diet all our lives based on sugar in food ,what chance do we give ourselves of just turning a corner one day . Good luck mate .🙏stay healthy
I’ve been overweight my entire. I always believed it was the fat in the foods that made me look and feel like shit, I wish I would have know earlier it was the sugar all along. In 2017 I started keto at 215 lbs, now I’m a stable and happy 140-145! Best decision ever
Ted M. More people are finding the keto diet every day. And they are better off for it. I’m using the keto to control my diabetes but it can also be used to control weight and general health overall.
This is one of the best health/wellness vids I've ever seen, and it was back in '09! So much info packaged with absolutely no nonsense, straight talk, and SCIENCE!
At last! - Somebody who not only knows about his subject, but also knows how to TALK about it: to keep our interest. He doesn't drone on; he speaks with variety. He doesn't sound - as nearly all healthcare 'experts' do - as if he was reading, and had read it a hundred times before! He speaks with different notes, different speeds, different attitudes. It is why some politicians and actors are interesting and others boring. it is why churches are 3/4 empty. This man knows how to talk. It is called charm, but it is just knowing how to talk. Thank heaven! John
Then, why can he hardly start a new sentence without first saying "SO". "So", how can you call that speaking with variety if the "so" is (so) too many times repeated and becomes irksome. He also falls into other bad speech traps such as starting a sentence with AND as well as with, NOW. All of these are used totally out of context. Criticizing him is constructive. Hagiography is beneath any person of probity. Aside of all this the talk is informative and is appreciated.
@@henniedevilliers7570 You critizise his "falling into sppech traps", while you use a sentence like "Hagiography is beneath any person of probity." on a site for "all levels of IQ, insight and nationalities" as if barely even any english/american speaking people have a clue of, what that means - sure looks arrogant and narcissistic to me...

Some 30 years ago my wife and I happened to visit a Pepsi factory. That opened our eyes to the amount of sugar in colas and we completely gave up colas and other sodas. Happily both of us weigh exactly the same now in our mid seventies as we did 30 years ago.
so what you are saying is 30 years after giving up "colas, and other sodas", you haven't lost a single pound? 30 years, after giving up something you enjoyed. You said you "weigh exactly the same as 30 years ago" when you gave up the colas...so...the benefit was?????

I was binge watching Andrew Huberman’s TH-cam channel during this insanely long 2-month lockdown that happened accidentally in Shanghai. In one of his videos he mentioned Robert Lustig and I traced all the way to this video. This video and a bunch of others scared the hell out of me since basically all my family members have some kind of metabolic syndrome (Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, high uric acid, hypertension) and not all of them are obese. Now I finally know that root cause of these metabolic diseases is the increase in percentage of sugar and processed food intake. Immediately after watching this video, I got rid of all my processed food and sugar in my diet. (which is easy during the lockdown but very hard after the lockdown, because sucrose is ingrained in the Shanghainese food culture) It’s been around 1 week and I noticed a dramatic improvement in my teeth. I no longer develop calculus on my teeth even if I reduced my frequency of brushing to once a day. And I feel much better psychologically. Thank you for all that information. I wish I have watched this video when I was in middle school. (Because that was the time for me to start eating more sugar and processed food.) I always knew sugar and processed food are bad, that’s what our teachers told us, but I never knew they were bad to this extent.
Haha I know what it feels like. I went down the rabbit hole 4 months ago. Look up Jason Fung if you haven't already. I hope your still keeping away from sugar. I felt like I had a terminal illness 4 months ago. Today I'm happy.
(I'm still watching this video) and I definitely want to throw out all the ready-to-eat crap in my house (even the prepackaged "healthy" ones) I'm just a little lost on.... what can I eat? (Just saw seaspiracy and cowspiracy and am done with the mindblowing global meat industry) Never been much of a cook, I live alone so I don't put much effort into it. But this is definitely a wake up call (even though the video is 12 years old!) Any tips on good and easy recipes? 😊
I"m convinced! Dr Lustig, you have successfully 'Recruited' me & I"ll do my very best as a medical doctor & wellness trainer to spread the awareness of Fructose Toxicity.
Andrew Chiew There’s a book called “Sugar Blues” that you could recommend to your patients. I read it in the 70’s and immediately after got rid of all the sugar in my house. 💐
to be honest i just stumbled onto this video and didnt care much for the topic but i watched to the end and created a great respect for how much this guy knows and the way he explains things. we need people like him in office
but we need to do something with what we learn, otherwise nothing will change for the better.

I gave up sugar in late November 2021, now mid January 2022, I'm down 20+ lbs., my BP is a lot lower, and I can say as a recovering alcoholic, quitting sugar was 1000 times harder. I feel so much better, and healthier, one of the best things I ever did for myself!
Nice. I started low carb and no sugar at Christmas. Cut out alcohol and sweets and snacks also. Down 15lbs and lower blood pressure also. I was always irritable and flushed. Wife says I'm in a better (slightly!) mood and I don't look at red as I did. Gotta keep it going!!
Congrats on recovering from alcoholism. Carbohydrates are one of the reasons for your addiction to alcohol. So, quitting sugar would be hard too. When I got married I started sugar again because it was part of the family diet. I've gained thirty pounds. Now I have to get back off the stuff.
@@brianmoore3063 How much do you drink? Beer or hard alcohol? I was able to quit cold turkey on my own, but if you're a very heavy drinker and dependant on it that can be fatal. I went to my doctor and I learned that I had a fatty liver. That was enough to get me to stop.
The greatest part of quitting sugar is that you don’t crave anything’s sweet after a meal ! I feel like a super human being able to fight off my sugar addiction. No more migraines before period, appetite is low and more energy
I agree. It's been 6 days I am doing 16:8 fasting, I don't feel urge to eat sweets after meal or late night. After couple days you feel full after eating little as your body get use to meal quantity and timing.
I occasionally still do, but I have been able to satisfy it with fruit, fresh or dried, and the occasional hot cocoa made with dates, unsweetened cocoa, and almond milk. During the summer, frozen bananas and other fresh fruit blended with coconut milk hits the spot.
Wow....the longest seminar I've sat through on YT...but he presented everything in an easy to understand manner for us non biochemistry majors. Well done.
Wrong. If it was easy to understand the audience would keep up better. At times he gates annoyed with having to wait for the right answer to many of the questions he asks.In fact he gives , or prompts the answer. Good presentation is when the dumbest person in the audience can work out what he is saying. I am not saying his talk isn't good and cracks the nut, that being we are being poisoned by an Industry that knows what harm it is causing, but his presentation needs to be dumbed down a lot. Dumbing down is not always a bad thing. The best teachers at school do it, so every pupil understands the lesson. He talks too quick, because it is a complicated subject. He should slow down, a lot.
@John If they are falling asleep then he isn't getting their attention. Which means he is wasting everybody's time. And if they are there just to listen and not learn then he may as well speak Russian. Is he some kind of hero to you or something? This is a terrible lecture by any standards.
@@taketimeout2share the seminar was not meant for the general public. It wa at a university with most people having a little more knowledge than the general public do he would have irritated them if he had to dumb down. There's enough TH-cam videos for us ordinary folks
I'm glad he mentions juice. It is such an overlooked source of sugar and people think it is healthy. Yes, it is better than soda, but it doesn't have fiber. A piece of fruit will give you the same vitamins, much less sugar, and a lot of fiber. Drink water or a nice tear and eat fruit and vegetables.
@RaniaIsAwesome all the studies linking meat to cancer is either done by "self reports" (where people who eat meat have a higher chance to be generally less healthy in other ways like smoking) or in animals that haven't had 300k years to improve their ability to filter out the potential carcinogens from cooked meat.
This is a misnomer about juice because if you say process pasteurized juice then yes we're talkin about something bad for you that's mainly sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, but if we're talking about fresh juice from the fruit itself unpasteurized and unprocessed This is highly good for you and cleansing. It's people like you that spread false information by not differentiating between the two
Normally i fall asleep after 15mins of my class lecturer droning on but this video was actually very informative. it has good sequence and time is not wasted. important points come forth fast. worth the watch.
@Jamie Rivet have you ever been to a grocery store? there is no fat in grocery stores it's all low fat (twice the sugar but that's on the back) products, most people don't eat fast food(which use omega 6 vegetable oils) all the time and you can get fat just eating the stuff from the grocery store despite the fact it's low fat and all the oils that remain are omega 6 hydrogenated vegetable oils - so there is barely any good fat in the food we eat today the only way to get it is to buy the most expensive oils or butter or an avocado whereas safflower oils are in every product and we need good fat for optimal function we need fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) and omega 3's we need fat to rebuild tissue, and fat can also be used as a fuel source(including body fat) and that fuel source goes for way longer and doesn't affect your blood sugars making your energy way more stable and can be used in cells which already have an inhibited glucose metabolism like in Alzheimers patients or with Insulin Resistance/ type 2 diabetes
@Jamie Rivet Funny how the article you provide about fat causing diabetes, yet the first comment on the article is someone who followed the writer's recommendations for 3 years and still has a high blood glucose level.
Agreed but it is the sugar going up not any changes in fat consumption that is changing people's health for the worse. Don't get taken in by people who say otherwise who will try to say it is cutting down the fat as well so fat must be good for you which is nonsense!
High Cholesterol is a reaction to inflammation, it is the source of the inflammation that needs to be controlled, sugar is a known inflammatory.@Jamie Rivet
WOW.. I can't believe I just watched the whole 1.5 hours of this, right after waking up in the morning before doing anything else. I mean everybody knows that sugar is bad for you, but his explanation is at another level..
My takeaway on this 1.5 hours is that fructose is a bad sweetener (toxic) when not in the presence of fiber (as how it is found in fruit). And also that fructose has the same damaging effects on cells and organs as alcohol does, but without the buzz. And thirdly, that sucrose is just fructose and glucose combined, but that they are instantly separated once consumed. Sound about right? So overall we can just say avoid fructose unless it comes from a whole food, and also avoid sucrose.
***** No, not fruit as it is digested differently and the sugar of fruit comes alongside a whole bundle of micro-nutrients too. Avoid fruit juice though. All fruit drinks that are not diluted are generally not worthwhile; you'de be much better off getting your nutrients from proper fruit and it would be better for your weight too. The real thing to avoid here is sucrose. Which itself is a combination of 1 glucose molecule and 1 fructose molecule. If you have an option of eating 100 cals of something that is mainly glucose vs 100 cals of something that is mainly sucrose choose the former as the latter is 50% glucose, 50% fructose and non-fruit-fructose is terrible for you.
***** Ozone is oxygen rich and it appears to do wonders for healing. They have ozone clinics all over Europe and in Germany and even in Cuba. US medical system is run by big pharma and all they want to do is peddle petrochemical drugs for profit.
I was recently diagnosed as pre-diabetic and after reading and hearing about the evils of sugar, it has gotten my utmost attention. I admit to owning my situation because I abused sugar and its misuse has begun to affect my health. I've noticed the change in my vision, my weight and I'm making an immediate change in my diet. Thank you for this informative video.
Your honesty and courage, to face your situation and share it here with the world are appreciated, dear Sir. I hope you can change your diet and prevent further harm to your body. The best wishes 🙏
As someone who has recovered from alcoholism and been ‘sober’ for nearly seventeen years I feel, having listened to this lecture, I have been deluding myself. Obviously not abusing alcohol is a good thing and to insure that I stay sober I will continue to refrain from putting the stuff in my body. But I have struggled with my weight and it seems to get harder as I get older to maintain a healthy weight due to my diet. I have run marathons, cycled to work and walked the Camino De Santiago in the past but as soon as I stop, on piles the weight. If I am honest, I was addicted to processed sugar way before I started drinking, one seamlessly blended into the other. When I put down the alcohol I seamlessly returned to my fructose ridden diet. Cross addiction in other words. I have mealy jumped ship from one addictive substance to another and then back again. But I love life! Recently I have refrained from sugar and processed foods via intermittent and water fasting which has made me feel and look great. But then I have relapsed into sugar ridden binges. It has woken me up to the reality of my other addiction, my primary addiction. Sugar. Sugar has been a massive part of my life for 55 years! I have been chasing, using, binging the stuff my whole life. I am ageing quickly. Mr Lustig has really motivated me to complete my recovery from addiction by letting go of my dependence on this deadly addictive substance. He compared it to alcohol which makes so much sense. The only way to stay sober for people who break down alcohol like me is to not put any of it in my body. So it follows that I must take a zero attitude to fructose. But it is everywhere. Giving up in modern British society It is like trying to leave a cult, there is peer pressure, temptation and opportunity where ever I go. But I have sought the help of other like minded people in the past, God willing, I can do it again.
Yes Kieran, you can do it, it's very possible, when I go out it happens the same to me, people just want me to drink the beer, or the soda or the white flowers, but I just say no, I tell them that's my life style and they normally end up accepting it. So don't give up, you can do it.
So how do we dismantle an industry that is bent on profit over welfare ? Knowledge is power and through it we vote with our wallets and learn why we no longer buy their slow toxic crap.
you are brave just allowing yourself to share this...I hope you find all the intestinal fortitude you need to put the addiction behind you once and for all...so sorry...it has to be so so so hard; hey, I heard that increasing or taking L-glutamine helps with sugar addiction, only take a large amount like 500 to 100 mg at once before you imagine a craving setting in...you should start to sense the 'need' and this amino acid is available to the brain to help bust the craving...since so few things that they know of impact the brains need for fuel that are considered safe...obviously fruit is helpful and honey...give the brain instant, but usable fuel, and its sustainable, but sugar and fructose, etc...are those things that create the wrong fuel...also so does addictive behavior...it fuels the brains need for adrenaline and then there is the crash. Adrenaline is one of the fuels for the the brain, but its a BAD fuel...so your brain needs fuel and will just go for the easy adrenaline, but it is a rollercoaster ride...I hope knowing this helps encourage good behavior...best of luck and may the blessings of God also be a part of your healthy path. Also please let it be known to folks with ADHD...they have more neural networking in the prefrontal cortex creating a need for more brain fuel, hence a tendency to reach for addictive, adrenaline fueling behaviour...since adrenaline is a brain fuel, of course this makes sense that they have a tendency for addictive behaviors and substances - they require some fruit throughout the day....real fruit, organic, with the peel if possible and maybe with some fiber, and they need it about every 90 minutes to meet the high demand of their brains...I wish I could find the research on that but its worth a try for those who have autistic children...apparently works for them - I'm not making a guarantee...just offering info.
Less Sugar = more sweet, it might sound strange but your taste gets used to the amount of Sugar, if you eat less less sweet things will taste more sweet, so you profit twice, health wise and sweet taste wise.
Yep, you take out sweet processed foods and your taste buds become more sensitive to fruit, fruit tastes absolute amazing when you become more sensitive to it again.
And if you were to try some of the 'treats' they called 'sweet' back in the 1920s-1960s, you would probably find them bland or even bitter! Just as human have grown accustomed to way too much sugar over the decades, we can wean ourselves off of it, and when you do, things that seem 'just right' will start to taste too sweet, so as to render them unpalatable. Working on keto combined with intermittent fasting. Still winding up to it (with about 60-75% success), but may start with a 24-72 hour clear-liquids fast just to detoxify. Wish me well!!
You brought in the concept of calories here. I recently read an article that showed that body does not deal with calories, neither does it count them. The concept of calories came from physics not from biology. Body recognises nutrients only. Keep up your fight against sugar. Good job.
Body does deal with units of energy, no matter how you call them, that come from nutrients. That's the defining criterion of macronutrients: they absolutely MUST provide energy. ALL natural processes comply with laws of physics. If you prove that human body is free from laws of thermodynamics, you'll get a Nobel prize in at least two fields (and revolutionize science in the way). Your Captain Obvious.

@Bolt Design Studio haha I know what you mean. Some are definitely not sweet, and it also helps to prepare them in a certain way. Likening to a candy bar is a bit of a joke, but grating a carrot to very fine consistency and eating it pure is how I have enjoyed them for years and enjoyed their natural sweetness. Anyway...
@Ed everything I used to hate (I was a very picky kid eating lots of sweets and refined foods) now tastes absolutely amazing. I've actually made the joke many times trying something I used to hate that it 'tastes like candy!' Oh how things have changed in my life for the better.
ahahha, that is awesome - its true! the other day I was hungry and there was nothing I could admit that was hard core healthy in my small town that was ready to order up and I was on my way home, so I cracked my bag of organic celery and tetra pack of organic spinach, and ate those straight up in my vehicle. Yeah, it helped. But if you have had an ice cream and a big gooey bun any time in the last month or week, your brain wouldn't be able to leave you alone about it and there's no way you could hack back celery and spinach and be grateful.

Because unhealthy stuff is cheaper than heathy stuff
He also says that it is not the fault of the obese people it they are victims.

I stopped eating sugar and drinking soda the weekend before Thanksgiving 2020. I started out at 212.8 pounds. I am down to 188.2 pounds, and I feel great.
The alcohol connection is one that really needs to be brought to the public's attention. Sugar is alcohol that doesn't make you drunk. Alcohol is rotten sugar that does. Saying it this way could blow a lot of minds.
+A Closer Look sugar feeds EVERY cell in the human body EVERY CELL in our body is fed by sugar but you can't name one cell that feeds on alcohol to say sugar is alcohol is no different than saying sugar is not the body's primary fuel source.
bud385
Actually fructose feeds practically nothing it's glucose that is used by our organs.
Lustig is correct "good thing he has NO IDEA"
bud385
No he covers the fruit thing. The idea is that in nature fructose is found in plants with very high fiber density. The fiber inhibits the absorption of the fructose to a healthy rate. Refining the fructose without the fiber is what causes the negative feedback loop. All explained right here in this video you didn't watch.

Another great resource is ‘Sugar Blues’ by William Dufty. He goes into the long history of sugar in our culture.
Here's my notes for the talk:
There are many different types of sugars, but the ones you need to know about are: Fructose, Glucose, Sucrose, Lactose
Leptin is a chemical that your body releases that reduces hunger.
Ghrelin is a chemical that your body releases that increases hunger.
Sucrose:
- This is what cane sugar and beet sugar consists of.
High Fructose Corn Syrup:
- A mix of Fructose and Glucose molecules, each of which your body must then process.
Glucose:
- Suppose you consume 120 calories of Glucose (e.g.
Fructose:
- Fructose (and consequently sucrose) is a poison.
- Fructose is processed almost exclusively by your liver (in contrast to Glucose, which can be used by any cell of your body).
- Fructose does NOT suppress Ghrelin (a "hunger hormone")
- "Acute Fructose does not stimulate insulin (or leptin) release.
-- "If insulin doesn't go up then leptin doesn't go up, and if leptin doesn't go up then your brain doesn't see that you ate something."
- Fructose causes metabolic syndrome.
Fiber:
- Fiber is (de facto) an essential nutrient.
-- The government not listing fiber as an essential nutrient allows high fiber foods to be exported.
- Causes your brain to receive the satiety signal sooner.
- Causes an increase in Short Chain Fatty acids, which help to suppresses insulin (thereby reducing hunger).
- "Reduces rate of intestinal carbohydrate absorption, reducing insulin."
-- The bacteria in your gut consume the excess carbohydrates, which ultimately makes you pass gas.
- Although fruit has sugar in it (Sucrose and Fructose), it has a lot more fiber than it has sugar so you don't gain nearly as much weight from eating fruit as you would from consuming the same amount of sugar in candy or a drink.
Lactose:
- Lactose is a sugar (not very sweet though).
Recommendations for losing weight:
- Get rid of sugared water
-- Only water and milk.
- Eat all carbohydrates with FIBER.
- Wait 20 minutes before a second portion.
Exercise:
- Improves skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity, which causes insulin to go down. (This reduces hunger).
- Causes TCA cycle to run faster thereby "burning off" the chemicals that are used to produce fat.
- Exercise causes weight loss primarily by increasing your metabolism and NOT by directly burning fat
EDIT: (Added November 2021 - info. from Wikipedia articles "Sucrose", "Fructose", and "Fructolysis")
- About 10% of the calories contained in the Western diet are supplied by fructose (approximately 55 g/day).
So most of the fat currently on your body originated from eating fructose/sucrose.]
---- Under one percent of ingested fructose is directly converted to plasma triglycerides [but much more is INdirectely converted to triglycerides].
In addition to the liver, fructose is metabolized in intestine, testis, kidney, skeletal muscle, fat tissue and brain, but it is not transported into cells via insulin-sensitive pathways
- "Sucrose is a disaccharide made up of 50% glucose and 50% fructose"
My own conclusion: So when you eat something that on the label says "16g of added sugar", then you may as well assume that a large percentage of that (at least a few grams) will be made into brand new fat stored somewhere in your body.
But sugar isn't bad for you as long as it's consumed within a fruit, maple syrup or honey.
@@crand20033 Oh yes it is. Sugar is sugar and todays GMO fruit is nothing like the original fruit it came from. Look at pictures of water melon from 50 years ago and compare it to today. Todays fruit is basically candy and should be a very occasion treat, in season.

Nice. Just remember you can eat carbs as long as you eat enough fiber.
Have you looked at the video,Eating you Alive, on you tube?
I am convinced sugar is the worst evil of all evils
I have been off sugar for a year and a half and it has made a dramatic difference this is real
I'd put it in second place, right behind GOP politicians.
Sugar should be declared a toxin and regulated. Not for what it does directly but for what it causes indirectly. ☠️
Tsetsi well not the worst. That would be the government, the police and then sugar.

I'm saving this so that when I need it for someone, it can help them understand as much as it did me. This was time well spent.

"The Number ONE responsibility of a government is to protect its citizenry."
Yeah...Right.
We, Americans are up against very powerful lobbyists. The sugar lobby has been profiting off of our suffering for decades! Think of all the cavities, the diabetes and heart disease and for decades, never heard one word of warning...until this lecture hit us in the face with the truth. The reality of sugars deadliness isnt even taught in school.
Very powerful corporate lobbyists care only about their profits.

Since I wrote this comment I lost around 20 more pounds which was mostly belly fat that's gone now.
When I stopped with sugary beverages (3 liters of ice tea daily for long periods and fruit juices) my sense of hunger normalized and I don't overeat at all. I used to crave sugar or just food in general with no satiation.
That hasn't been the case ever since I started drinking water almost exclusively and slowed down a lot on fast food. I still eat garbage frequently but in reasonable amounts it's no issue
Processed friut juices? What About freshly squeezed?
maybe stop the plant sludge all together
if you think plants are healthy then why do all of them contain high amounts of sugar ??
Fruit = fructose = sugar
vegetables = starch = sugar
grass seeds (known to you as grains) = starch = sugar ...
ALL junk foods are made from plants, plant oils(mostly soy bean ,palm oil etc...) , plant seeds and chemicaIs 1,000 and 1,000s of them on store shelf... the same ones that are claimed to be "healthy"...
I think at this point u need to reevaluate what is actually bad for humans and what is not...

I'm convinced that sugar also causes acne. At age 26, I'd had acne for twelve years. I decided to try giving up sugar (sucrose, fructose) for a while for health reasons. Three days after I stopped eating any sugar, my acne completely dried up (for the first time in twelve years). Not sure if it would work for others, but it did for me.
Well it's sure more profitable to sell skin care products to you, eating healthy is free...
I'm also having skin issues and I'll try not to eat any sugar from now on, at least for a while.
Sugar especially sodas will show up in your face and skin. Sugar is poisonous.
Thanks for sharing
This man is living proof we all need second opinions. Anything that cannot stand the test of being questioned should be rejected.
Psi Clops agreed and fake added powder fiber mixed in doesn't help its not the same
@RaniaIsAwesome all the studies linking meat to cancer is either done by "self reports" (where people who eat meat have a higher chance to be generally less healthy in other ways like smoking) or in animals that haven't had 300k years to improve their ability to filter out the potential carcinogens from cooked meat.
@RaniaIsAwesome you're really stating you believe something from the UN? HAHA you poor ignorant soul....
It's people like you that spread false information by not differentiating between the two
@@TheOneanjel What do you mean when you say fresh fruit juice is cleansing?
This’s truly a great lecture! Sad that compared to 13 years ago the consumption of added sugar has further increased…
38:31 - relationship between TG, LDL pattern A and B
45:27 - metabolism of glucose
55:30 - metabolism of ethanol
1:00:30 - metabolism of fructose
Normally i fall asleep after 15mins of my class lecturer droning on but this video was actually very informative. it has good sequence and time is not wasted. important points come forth fast. worth the watch.
Yes, I would give two thumbs up, one for the information itself and one for the presentation and explanation
"The fats are going down, the sugar is going up and we're all getting sick." Words of wisdom
*MY RELATIVES EAT SUGAR AND LIVE TO BE 85 OR 100*
I just shared this on Facebook. If even one of my many friends watches this, that will be a huge stride forward.
This doctor was so ahead of the trend!!
What trend?

Yep, pretty much.
*****
The fructose in fruit is okay because it cones with fiber which mitigates any damaging effects.
B-)

Growing up I hated my dad for a strict “ no soft drink “ rule . Now realising he saved my life 😭❤️
This doctor's information has changed my life for the better. Thank you, sir.

This is THE BEST lecture on sugar, must watch.
Anyone here in 2024??
I’m right here! Every word he says is more true than ever. I actually revisit this video a couple times a year.

🙋🏻♀️ I’m back! But then I’ve never stayed away tbf! 😅
My friend told me to watch this jewelry last year and i'm finally watching it. So glad i can understand finally why he rathers LGI with high fat diet.
Over here ✋🏻✋🏻
As someone who has recovered from alcoholism and been ‘sober’ for nearly seventeen years I feel, having listened to this lecture, I have been deluding myself.
But I have sought the help of other like minded people in the past, God willing, I can do it again.
kieran cummins - Yes, you can do it! One day (one moment) at a time...
We are the most powerful beings in existence. We can do anything. Nothing can beat us. Never give up
you are brave just allowing yourself to share this...I hope you find all the intestinal fortitude you need to put the addiction behind you once and for all...so sorry...it has to be so so so hard; hey, I heard that increasing or taking L-glutamine helps with sugar addiction, only take a large amount like 500 to 100 mg at once before you imagine a craving setting in...you should start to sense the 'need' and this amino acid is available to the brain to help bust the craving...since so few things that they know of impact the brains need for fuel that are considered safe...obviously fruit is helpful and honey...give the brain instant, but usable fuel, and its sustainable, but sugar and fructose, etc...are those things that create the wrong fuel...also so does addictive behavior...it fuels the brains need for adrenaline and then there is the crash.
I thought it was just me but you're right. Like dark chocolate tasted much better after I cut out sugar for a while.
So true , my wife made me a meal with sweet potatoes and it tasted corrupt with sugar. But I knew it was because I don't eat sweet potatoes a lot.
This is true when bbn I cut my sugar a apple taste delicious!
“I stand corrected”. Perfect demonstration, perfect thinker.
Dr. Lustig saved my life. I cannot thank him enough for his persistance.
Jamil Ahmed Calories a merely a unit of heat - as measured in chemical reactions. Meaningless in the context of nutrition and biology.
you are very right, but you have to to go very deep to understand this I'm sure lots of people baffled with this fact, sadly.
@@МексиканскийТушкан-ы1ю I will suggest you read more about function of insulin, insulin resistance, hyperinsulinema, pathology of type 1 diabetes, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis,,, and I hope you will rethink about associating living organism's energy homeostasis with non living things.
@Dr. Jamil Ahmed yes body does because when you take high or low nutrients then its dangerous .

Reduce sugar intake to zero, and suddenly carrots actually taste very pleasant, sweet. Cheap, crunchy, hydrating and flavourful. It's the 21st century gluten-free-vegan-compatible-paleo-ketogenic candy bar.
Stop saying OK after expressing a thought. OK?
Carrots are not ketogenic. If you're trying to lose weight don't eat any vegetables or fruits that are high in carbohydrates.
