You might not be asking something from the idol inside the temple, but you cannot disassociate a statue of Buddha from Buddhism. These statues are no different from the ones placed in every Buddhist temple or monestories.

But in stone? That's really hard work. I am from a Buddhist country and we use cement because its much easier. Besides the original rock was blasted apart so there's nothing to carve a statue. They could make another statue on another place on that rock though.

You can see that in temples across Nepal as well. Some Muslims entered Nepal in 14th century so you can see in Pashupatinath temple, almost every sculptures carved before 14th century have their faces destroyed.

I was mesmerised when i saw the Bamiyan statues on David Adams' documentary - Journeys to the Ends of the Earth. If I can recall, in the same episode, in the end, they informed that the statues were blown up by the Taliban. A strange sadness descended on me. I am 36 now, still feel for this great loss. 😞 May sanity prevail.

I'm a Buddhist as well, it is sad to see the destruction of the Bamiyan statues. But now I'm devastated to see what's happening in Afghanistan especially to the innocent people, mostly the Hazara. Statues could be built but human lives are more precious.

I like the way the farmer recognizes (and even got affected to) the Buddha more than of a religious thing. He simply showed to us that no matter what we believe in, we can still appreciate or at least recognize others belief.
It's even more than other people's believes its about their heritage, Afghanistan was a center of Buddhism in past, so for let's say a Buddhist from Indonesia may have religious factors regarding Bamiyan Buddha but for an Afghan they are their very Heritage irrespective of their religion today, this sculptures were built by their ancestors.

I like the way the farmer recognizes (and even got affected to) the Buddha more than of a religious thing. He simply showed to us that no matter what we believe in, we can still appreciate or at least recognize others belief.

On lunch watching this at work, crying my eyes out. The loss of these most holy and beautiful statues of Buddha is heart wrenching. I literally couldn’t believe what I saw, and I can’t imagine how heart sick the locals are for being forced into doing something so horrendous. I pray very much that they can live peacefully with their remaining Buddha caves still there. I pray that somehow they can not live in fear of those that oppressed them.
