What you say?
In the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, there are Hylian runes used to decorate all sorts of ancient Sheikah structures. These runes are actually a cipher for English text, with each unique symbol mapping to a letter of the English alphabet. The developers left different messages on different items in the game.
For instance, the doors to the shrines scattered throughout the world have the word "DUNGEON" written on them. iirc, the balls you use to solve puzzles have the word "SPHERE" written on them, and the slots you place them into are labelled "SOCKET"
But a little more fun are the messages that contain references to past Zelda games. Scrolling text when accessing a Sheikah Tower says "MASTER USING IT AND YOU CAN HAVE THIS," a quote from the first Zelda game. Waypoint markers are labelled "ITS DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE"
But, in my personal favorite iteration of the meme, when you are receiving runes for your sheikah slate early in the game, nestled between messages saying "NOW LOADING" and "DO NOT TURN OFF YOUR DEVICE" is the phrase "ALL YOUR BASE ARE [BELONG TO US]", though the end of the message is cut off in the animation
is this real?
AMAZING. I’m playing BotW for the first time right now (I’m very late haha) and this is super cool to know. I figured the letters probably said something but I hadn’t looked it up.
1:50 how dare you tell me the meme culture of my youth happened TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
It's moments like these that not only make us feel old, they make us realize we actually are old.

Btw, the actual translation is "Treasure what little time remains in your lives" (in Japanese: "せいぜい残り少ない命を、大切にしたまえ"), which is also nice when taken out of context.
Astounding. And English speakers have the exact same euphemism or expression. This is how wars are started. Oh dear
This is equal parts poetic and sinister, love it.

Really and truly, I am so glad that someone else found profound meaning in "You have no chance to survive, make your time." I've been waiting 25 years to encounter someone else who gets it. Thank you!
That connection between people is 100 percent my favorite part of the internet.
I'm just sad that John didn't end the video with the next line: "Ha Ha Ha"

You can always count on John Green to memento mori
As usual, "inspirational quotes" get flipped in my head, so all it made me think of was how in my life I don't make time for others or me, time makes things happen to me and pushes others away
I feel like the Goncharov meme is the closest modern meme that gets close to this level of community collaboration
John making All Your Base Are Belong to Us into something so sincere and meaningful is peak John 😂💚
It’s one of my favorites, if not my true favorite.

Gotta respect the researched, complex videos happening during Pizzamas.
I bet John knew all this already from the top of his head.
@@HarshitWise Yeah I'm about his age and was VERY online in the late 90s and early 00s and I could have given the exact same explanation of that video (which I first saw as a downloadable flash video) off the top of my head.

God I will never be as enticing to listen to at my best as this man is explaining a TH-cam meme video.
Imagine telling someone in 2005 that All Your Base Are Belong To Us would not just feel nostalgic but be used as a metaphor for LIFE ITSELF
It kinda /was/ nostalgic in 2005. The original meme took off in 1998/9 and this video was on Newgrounds in 2001.
And also explaining that it would be HISTORY. Like, telling a kid about “All Your Base are Belong to Us” today is comparable to telling a kid in the 90s about “Strawberry Fields Forever”

I'm very passionate about these kinds of niche topics and I will gladly give up all my base for more videos like this one
Thank you for differentiating between gifs on the one hand, and gifs on the other.
Jif and Ghif felt like pockets of isolation back then. Sometimes you'd literally be the first person to say Ghif to someone and it'd take ages for them to realize there were people that also said Jif.

AYBABTU is one of my favorite videos because it paints this picture of an Internet where the only best thing to do AT ALL was tack a new photoshop onto the end of a photoshop meme thread. When a joke could just spontaneously get carried for two years one post at a time by any random stranger and it would still be, somehow, one of the funniest things anyone had ever seen.
It was a time I miss, and to love this video you must understand why.

This was my first TH-cam video ever watching around 2003-4 also!! I was in my first job after college, the new girl in the all-boys IT dept, and our Network Admin asked if I knew this video. I did not.
Plot twist: instead of being a douche NetAdmin, he promptly pulled it up and we watched it together. And he explained the origin. Then he said “I will show you the ways of the NetAdmin, grasshopper”. We remained friends for many years after I left that job. Thanks, J-Man.
Now we need "Badgers", Nyancat, Leekspin, "They're taking the hobbits to Isengard-gard-gard!", and Numa Numa to really complete my old nostalgia tour. Oh, and of course a giant binging of all of Homestarrunner. And the Trogdor comes in the NIIIIIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
John’s thoughtful approach to any subject is what we’re missing more of in this world
One small correction is in order though:
The version of Zero Wing that the infamous line is derived from released only in Europe on the Mega Drive. The SEGA Genesis never got that version, and the original Arcade release (which was released in America) never had cutscenes.
This makes “ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US” a meme of European origin.
All my purpose for opening this video on laptop are belong to you.

This has to be one of the best John Green vlogs. It's literally one of the most succint yet sincere video essays I've seen in some time. Honestly, it kind of has the vibe of a David Foster Wallace essay.

Backdoor pilot for Crash Course History of Memes
So excited for this to be announced later this pizzamas
I am in a near constant state of expectation and preparidness for when All Your Base come back around into revelance again. Have been for going on 2 decades. It set a gold standard of larger scale, indirectly colaborative memery, and it deserves recurring recognition for this status. Thank you for giving it its due.
Minor historical note: while the arcade version of Zero Wing did see a North American release, said release did not bear the iconic intro sequence we know and love - that intro was exclusive to the Megadrive (Genesis) version, which didn't see release over here at the time. The wonderfully faulty English translation was part of a European release of the cart. I would wager that this relative-obscurity helped push the popularity of the meme.
Curiously, a 2023 re-release of Zero Wing - based on the arcade version - would receive an adaptation/remake of the megadrive introduction, with newly drawn imagery and music repurposed from elsewhere in the game. The dialogue was also re-written, largely cleaning things up, but with the Cats lines largely intact, under the guise of a malfunctioning translation circuit
I also remember the first TH-cam video I saw. It was "butterfly lovers" a beautiful gymnastic/ballet dance that is still amazing to watch 20ish years later.
I don't have anything of substance to add, I'm old, and I appreciate the nostalgia trips you've taken us on with the last two videos, so here's some engagement.
I’m old enough this is all new to me :)
I only really ‘discovered’ TH-cam about 5 years ago when my older kids started to get into it.
In 2005 I got my 3rd promotion, bought my first house, and was working on my second degree while working full time. I worked rotating hours so fri 4pm to 7am, Sat 5pm to 6:30 am and sunday 4:30 to 8 am. I then went to school from 9 am to 11pm lab ended monday, classes tues, wed, thurs during days and back to Friday! I was so busy and exhausted and not even aware most likely that TH-cam existed! 2 years later would be finished with second degree, married and beginning my parenting journey!
I think even though am not much older thank Hank and John I ‘JUST’ sort of missed the infancy of the second wave of the net. Bulletin boards I got and Napster was huge as I was finishing college the first time. But TH-cam and memes and social media I missed. I never even heard of social media really before Facebook started to explode!
@@lijohnyoutube101 Thanks for sharing that on my silly lil' comment. By the sound of it, I'm probably a bit younger than you, but these blasts from the past made me feel very old. I do not think I will ever get tired of John making hard/soft g jokes for the pronunciation of gif.

Oh the title is such a good quote indeed then :) When I was a Dutch as a second language teacher I had a guy write a very sweet line on a postcard in not perfect Dutch, and he wanted me to correct it. But it would have f***ed up the meaning and therefore the sweet beauty of it, so I remember trying to explain to him that I really wanted to keep the "wrong" sentence. He wasn't immediately on board but I think we kept it in the end 💛
Oh dit is lief ❤
Do you happen to remember the line?
@@coryman125 It was for another teacher, who was in his last week at the school and it was something along the lines of "I wish for you good life".
If I would have corrected it to "have a good life", it would have been completely different. That's casual and almost nonchalant.
If I would have corrected it to something like "I very much wish you have a wonderful and fulfilling life" then it would have a) sounded more sort of, like, woolly and somehow a bit more distant, because it's less straightforward. And b) the guy who's card it was would have not understood half of the text on his own card.
If I would have corrected it to "I wish you a good life" it would have been less personal, more like a genral line. The "for you" was very much part of the message, even in a more noticable way in Dutch.
So I kept telling this sweet sweet middle aged Iranian bus driver that I, this young and friendly Dutch teacher he had here, wished for him to keep it as it was 😅 He really wanted a correct sentence because he thought that that was necessary and I didn't want to just sweep the message off his card completely because of stupid grammar rules 💛
@@Just_Loves_Music i just want to say what a wonderful language teacher you were: caring more about the intent and the way something comes across rather than the "correctness" of it.

"levan polka" is this for me. Such an awesome collaboration
on the same note as that, the existence of the vocaloid community. like, people around the internet agreed that a voice synth mascot was really cool and we should pretend that it is an actual featured artist, and that it has its' own lore, that the company behind that synth then accepted those memes as canon and in many cases struck deals with the "inventor" internet users for merchandising and licensing purposes? also, hologram concerts, where a live band of skilled musicians decide to collaborate with a made up illusion of a singer? amazing

Having struggled with depression for a while and this year's Pizzamas lining up with the passing of my grandmother and the impending literally today as I'm writing this the day we will say goodbye to our family dog of 14 years that I've had in my life from the age of 17 to now 31.
Weird how the world works.
I also cry or tear up to most vlog brothers videos these days, whether they're depression or mental health related or when the actions of this community and news covered on it are the only glimpses of optimism I see in this country and world these days.
So sorry you're going through all that. Sending love your way 💜
Sending virtual hugs. My summer was similar. My dad’s funeral was less than a week before my sweet cat lost her battle to cancer. Some days I can find comfort in the pieces of them that live on in me or the happy memories of better times. Other days depression or grief drain me of joy.
I like John’s reminder to make your time in the light of this. My sister gets dragged under with regret for not spending more time with our dad. Regret is living in the past and can feel enticing while grieving. Being in the now requires a commitment to accepting our lost loved ones will only be part of our daily journey if we choose to carry the best of them into our here and now.
I hope that in time you can find joy in the memories you have of your grandmother and your dog without those memories tasting like tears. I feel blessed for the time I had with my quirky wonderful dad and my quirky wonderful cat. Grief is a reflection of the love you shared and that love lives on in you. Often media paints things in simple dichotomies and overhyped clickbait. Real life is more blurry and messy. Love and pain, optimism and despair aren’t all separate from each other. They are all part of the messy chaos of living here and now and always. Make your time and try to find the sweetness in your memories. Try to see that dichotomies are an illusion. I have hope that more people are seeing that
Get well, wish you the best.
My condolences ❤

This is giving me one heck of a nostalgia kick.
This video gives me vivid flashbacks to my freshman year at Reed (2000/2001), where and when the Zero Wing intro became its own viral video.
I was there on the Something Awful forums when it all started. And one of my pics got included in the video (and was improperly attributed in the credits).
Funny thing about the original All Your Base thread on SA was that the first post in the thread wasn't an All Your Base meme (we called the image macros back then), it was a post that said "On the table!" The first reply was an AYB image (of a skeleton from Army of Darkness) and the rest was history.
(A lot of the images were made in MS Paint and are really really terrible by today's standards. I have a folder full of many of the original AYB images.)
