Fine handkerchief linen, silk or similar thin cloth work as well. I cut up an old paisley tie to make a Mughal canopy for an elephant howdah and scraps from my wife's sewing became cloth trappings for other elephants. Fabric stores often have scraps bins where you can get inexpensive remnants if you don't know someone who sews.
I was so nervous when you started drybrushing the white on. But it makes the cloth look worn and really makes them pop.. love the fact you promote other channels too.. well done on the 100k! Well deserved
baby wipes work really well (unused - LOL) Paper napkins (they are multi-ply so separate them) have another advantage in that you can find them in colors or patterns. I found some old english patterns that worked nicely.
Crazy...I was watching the Tudors last night and thinking I need to make some medieval tents that are better than the old cardstock ones I have from Perilous Quest. Perfect timing!
Thanks for showing videos like this - it encourages those of us just starting out that even the experts still need to learn new techniques and not everything goes to perfect plan first time. It also helps us to see how things can be fixed, and the time and effort doesn't have to go in the bin just because it's not perfect. Thank you. I've been enjoying your videos this last week and am slowly working out what I'm needing to forward think about for my planned diorama. Thanks.
I have used an old cotton sheet soaked in strong tea and PVA for a canvas look before...very effective and it drapes well. Clean but old cotton (worn out bed-sheet) is best. I have also used kleenex and PVA but you have to be careful how you handle it as it will rip and fall apart easily if handled too much.
Congrats on the 100k! My husband showed me your wizard tower video and I've been hooked ever since. I've always wanted to make complex scenes like you do, ever since I was a preschooler! I don't have the space (or money) yet but you've inspired me to start building my skills right now using materials I can find around the house. One day I'll graduate to your level! Looking forward to seeing what you do next.
I have used similar techniques for things like curtains and blankets. But something I do is look at the textures of various paper towels and TP. The patterns can look really cool and intentional when used well.
Anyone notice he looks a bit like Mel Gibson? Kinda like how Eric from Eric's hobby workshop looks like Tom Hardy. Both played Mad Max. That's all i wanted to say. Congrats on 100k!
If you had searched more of DM Scottys vids you would have seen where he would use toilet paper or even paper towels for such things as you are trying, but the secret was lay down the toilet paper or paper towel down dry on your project then spray it with a 50/50 mixture or white glue and water. And let dry. Hopes this helps
One material experiment that might be worth trying is using rice paper used for Vietnamese spring rolls. You just soak them in warm water for a moment, and they are quite forgiving and elastic. Haven't tried for crafting, just cooking, but could potentially be something that would work as well. :)
Woke up this morning, opened YT in search of videos to make some tents for my Orlok clan... *scroll preview film *scroll game preview 3d : you, and your tents!!! 🤗
use an underlayer of papertowel 1st. it helps build texture and strength . then use the tissue paper to cover it and hide the papertowel pattern. love your vids always inspiring .you can also use clear packaging plastic and boiling water to make nice strong banners/cloth
If you are old enough to have seen the Music Video for Alice In Chains "I stay away", then you would agree that these designs are eerily similar to The aesthetic of the Music Video. I love how fun and interesting each design is, it's a great tutorial! Nice job!
Nice job on the tents look good. Yeah Scotty did some like that for Orcs I think V at Crafting Muse did some nice tents. I know I'm probably forgetting several that did tents. One thing that can really make them look a little nicer is where the roof meets the wall use a strip either cut in rectangles or triangles hanging down can paint them in a different color or make them blowing in the breeze slightly to add detail and more interest to the tents. Can even use paper towels the cheap thin ones with no embossed lines in it if the toilet paper is a bit to flimsy for you.
Glad I came across this. I want to make some tent like structures for my display that I can use in Gaslands as well. What I am looking at is more like a large pop up style tent (domed) or hunting blind type of deal for my display.
Great job with the 100k subscribers! Great video with making tents. I usually use cheap paper towels, but I've looked at toilet paper as well, never gone below 2 ply with the toilet paper. Usually use 1 ply for the paper towels though.
Love it, These are GREAT BUD!!! I also have done some tents tent type crafts, I used wet wipes, NOT them CHEAP ones though they fall apart right out of the water!! Love these TENTS!! THANKS!!!!
I have Wars of the Roses armies and need two encampments with tents. I have been debating how to do this for some time and your video has given me the push `I need to get the job done. I'll be using your method, thanks
love the tents, haven't checked to see if you made more yet, but what about trying a cheap or old t-shirt for the base. I am going to try that once I get some time to start modeling again. Thanks for the continued nice content.
I have been struggling with getting this kind of effect to work because, like you said, there aren't a ton of examples online. This has been SUPER helpful! Thank you!
Ciao!!!
Wow! 100k subscribers, that's amazing. Very well deserved. I made some small camping tents a while back but I need some big tents for a faire/joust I have planned. This will be perfect inspiration.
Congrats on the 100k subs. With regard to the canvas, I dry brush with the same color I painted the canvas but 2 - 3 shades lighter. I find it more realistic. I find dry brushing only with white on certain colors doesn't quite seem to portray realism and it can be quite noticeable. Give it a try. Once again congrats on 100k subs, quite an achievement on modelling channels.
I don't even play D&D, but I love doing miniature dollhouse scene and the effect I copy from you make my dollhouse look breathtaking with all the detail.
Scott from Miniac suggested using thin brass sheeting. You can shape it like a banner or flag in the wind and I it'll easily hold its shape. I wonder if this as a base but covered in tissue would give it a more realistic texture. Jeremy
honestly you did a great job on the canvas, the cuts you put into the wet tissue paper.... that takes skill, and patience. One suggestion, since I hate gluing tooth pick together is to use DM Scottys Tent structure method, it uses a carboard structure, much faster and easier to glue together. He used it in his orc Tent videos, but I will be trying a hybrid between your method and his.! Really nice tents !
I'd recommend giving a couple of the scale model guys a follow, papercraft tarpaulins are a good intro (and diorama techniques cross over really well). I'd suggest Plasmo, laser creation world, panzermeister36, and night shift.
Very nice work on the tents. I just did one myself and I wish I had seen this video before I did mine. One thing I used on mine that you might like to try in the future. Instead of using tissue I used some baby wipes. They are thicker and have a really nice finish that looks a lot like old tent material. Like the tissue, it took some time to figure out how to make it look realistic, and the baby wipes don.t blend as well with each other (you will always see a seam). Got me to thinking that baby wipes coupled with some tissues might work really awesome though. Thanks again for all your great videos. Your attention to detail is really fantastic.
Watching you inspires me so much when it comes to artistic expression, persistence and dedication, and your work has been great for teaching me how to texture and create various elements for my digital art. Thank you so much for creating such awesome content
I think these are amazing. Really good materials and yes.. the last one with the double layers look best. SUper nice that I can just see how to do it instead of trying to find out myself. Perhaps a third layer could even have worked as those canvas tents are really heavy. and you would have gotten an even softer look on the cloth. Like usual Neil: outstanding. Ohhh and... glad to be one of the 5% ers :)
I've had the idea for making a force of Bretonnian knights (from old school Warhammer Fantasy). Each knight, as befits their noble stature, have their own colors and heraldry to set them apart. It would be really cool to paint units of knights, and then make a tent for each one, with matching colors. So if you lay them all out on a battlefield, it looks like a battle broke out in the middle of their camp.
I use baby wipes for tents! Learned this trick from Mel the Terrain Tutor - looks just like thick cloth and is less delicate to work with than tissue paper
Black Magic Craft uses construction paper to simulate bits of leather/animal hide. It looks great There are lots of great tips about what to use for cloth so I'll add what I use as cloth on a very small scale. It's a paper for wrapping the ends of hair. It's called end wrap
My father did medieval reenactments (Wars of the Roses) over here in the Uk for years, I've put up so many of these tents. The tents you made look great, I'd definitely prefer to make these than put up the real ones!
If you want a cloth effect, use cloth ! You need a pillow case made from 800 count Egyptian cotton or above. The higher the count, the better the look, but a pillow case of 1200 count is super fine and works brilliantly, and costs about £5 / $6.50. Hope this helps.
Inspirational as always Neal , watching you making those tents puts me in mind of possible idea for you as a diorama of a jousting tournament with those tents gathered around a arena ? Well done on reaching that goal, and I'm sure there will be more .
Here is a really cool technique to use for frosted glass: Cover toilet paper in super glue and it will turn kinda transparent. It also turns very hard because it's superglue. The glue would need to be a runnier one
I used actual fabric and coated it with super glue - shaped as desired - which hardens it to feel like plastic..... Although this method was used onto a miniature to make a cloak it was a great result.... not sure if a larger project would work but you can give it a go.
Awesome job. I gave one a shot after watching your video...working with that wet tissue is no joke. I couldn't get it nearly as clean as yours. Thanks for a fun afternoon.
Sorry I missed this one earlier. Came from the frost giant. Apparently, I've been watching too many howling huskie videos, and yours keep getting crowded out of my recommended. - Boy howdy am I glad I did watch this one! Nice techniques, including the tips about researching what you don't know, or may want to improve.
Appreciate this video! Just built a tent and can attest to how frustrating is it to manipulate the tissue paper! Also, I really like the wagon on the thumbnail of this vid. Will you be making a tutorial on how to build that?
Hello, great videos! I was wondering if you could make a video on your editing techniques? I love the aesthetic and would love to learn how you do it. Thanks for all these cool projects!
Hey, I love your style of presenting .. very cas. (-ual) I find it to be a really inspirational channel. Hey, regarding your thoughts about what materials to use .... You really deserve the 100k. I love how the tents look, when i need tents i will definitely come back here

dried out baby wipes is a less frustrating option!
I think the Terrain Tutor had a video about that method.
I was so nervous when you started drybrushing the white on. But it makes the cloth look worn and really makes them pop.. love the fact you promote other channels too.. well done on the 100k! Well deserved

Yeah Luke from Geekgaming/Luke’s APS mentioned baby wipes to me as well. Also, love the idea of the pattern in there
I was just going to suggest wipes but I see someone already suggested it.
Cheese cloth might also work.
Crazy...I was watching the Tudors last night and thinking I need to make some medieval tents that are better than the old cardstock ones I have from Perilous Quest. Perfect timing!
Haha nice. I wanna see what you do with yours man!

This is so sweet seeing how pleased you were with hitting 100k subscribers. That's an incredible milestone. A year later, you're at 241,000.

Both played Mad Max. That's all i wanted to say. Congrats on 100k!
much cuter than mel gibson.
Or like Allen Covert the actor/comedian
Mad Max Terrain Challenge extravaganza between the two of them while they wear extreme amounts of leather would be slightly surreal
@@Pintroll300 Hear hear, I hope they get right on this. Next video idea right here
Art Generica Time will tell!
So looking forward to your next set...even more...bigtop...even better!
Grats on the 100k! So happy to be a part of the community you've created
Your videos are wonderfully lit, narrated and edited and I love the little animations you add as well.
The tents turned out great! And, can't wait to see what you do with the huge gaming board!

I admire that you make most things from scratch.
You earned that plaque, enjoy it!

The old fashion tissue that they use that comes with new shirts always worked great for me for 1/35th scale canvas tarps.

Realistic, creative and superb...once again!
Wow.... absolut perfect work!!!!!!!
Great first! You'll get better each time I am sure! Love all your work!
dude you got talent for doing minny sets so cool
👏 Wowsers... you really do create tiny world bits. Love your props to other creators too... good stuff.
Glad you recommended this in the newest video. I love it and wasn't recommended it before!
Those tents came out awesome!
I enjoyed those little flags way too much
love the tents, haven't checked to see if you made more yet, but what about trying a cheap or old t-shirt for the base. I am going to try that once I get some time to start modeling again. Thanks for the continued nice content.
Very nice looking and I'll be trying these soon!
Now I know what I'm going to do in weekend 😃
They came out wonderful!

Mel the Terran tutor done a video a while ago on making your own canvas looking material from wet wipes, it looked awesome.
Wow! 100k subscribers, that's amazing. Very well deserved. I made some small camping tents a while back but I need some big tents for a faire/joust I have planned. This will be perfect inspiration.
We're all here cause you're awesome!

These look great, I don't know why you were worried about the painting. Smashed it!
Great build, and well deserved on that 100K Neil.
So much fun! I have had some luck using old sheets or pillow cases, older the better, dipped pva glue.
next project target acquired! nicely done
Beautiful work, Brotha. Love it.
I don't even play D&D, but I love doing miniature dollhouse scene and the effect I copy from you make my dollhouse look breathtaking with all the detail.
That was interesting with the tents.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks
love this, maybe next video i will try make this, thanks for sharing your idea, really love it

Jeremy
Have you tried wet strength carbide paper? It’s what we used to make paper lanterns out of, dries really hard and can be formed into folds
Great result!
honestly you did a great job on the canvas, the cuts you put into the wet tissue paper.... that takes skill, and patience. The "Reluctant Rogue" was cool but the "Wandering Wizard" is still my favorite. Nice builds!
I'd recommend giving a couple of the scale model guys a follow, papercraft tarpaulins are a good intro (and diorama techniques cross over really well). I'd suggest Plasmo, laser creation world, panzermeister36, and night shift.
And through the virtue of patience, I could have noticed that you already found laser creation world...
I used dried baby wipes - material is very strong reducing ripping and can still manipulate folds and wrinkles. Mark Bosler

I'm going to use this method for a Harry Potter style Wizard Games tournament. These turned out great! Thanks for the tutorial

Love how these look. They could double as circus tents too.
Terrain tutor has got the skills
This is a cool idea. Thank you so much.. ❤️💡😊👍
Proud of you! And thank you, for everything. ❤️
I’ve seen the Terrain Tutor use baby wipes with some success. I think they’re a bit more durable than tissue. Great vid awesome looking tents.

Outstanding work on the tents. A handy tutorial I could use for tarps on trucks. Thanks for sharing
Baby wipes or dryer sheets work great
Awesome job. I gave one a shot after watching your video...working with that wet tissue is no joke. I couldn't get it nearly as clean as yours. Thanks for a fun afternoon.
Congrats on some nice looking tents and a richly deserved 100k.
Beautiful opening- (gasp) it felt soo good and hyped it so well with those great shots! Great work
Great work, try with bandage on paper and if you need some silk use silk ;)
Congratulations on the 100k. Love the tents and will be using this cloth technique. Thanks and keep up the great work.
Super cool! Love it.

Very cool! Great timing as I just backed the Heckna kickstarter and was wondering what I was going to do for tent terrain.
Appreciate this video! Just built a tent and can attest to how frustrating is it to manipulate the tissue paper!

Awesome and good luck with yours!!
Hello, great videos! I was wondering if you could make a video on your editing techniques? I love the aesthetic and would love to learn how you do it. Thanks for all these cool projects!
Mel uses dried baby wipes, the plain ones. Give you a better cloth texture and don't tear easily.
Hey, I love your style of presenting .. very cas. (-ual) I find it to be a really inspirational channel. Hey, regarding your thoughts about what materials to use ....
