Pro tip on the "protractor" (which is a compass): Once you draw a circle of desired radius; without adjusting your compass you can put the needle end on any point of the line of the circle and draw 2 small lines where the lead is crossing your original circle (you don't have to draw full circles here, just some marks). After that place the needle where one of your marks crosses your original circle and draw 2 marks from there (one of these marks will be on your first needle hole). Last step is to do the same from one of your furthest marks from the original one, it will be obvious where you should place your needle end. The radius of a circle is always the same as the sides of a hexagon that fits inside the circle. For more reference you can search for "constructing hexagon inscribed in a circle" for visual clues.
so cool!!! your video's about this castle made me try the game and im hooked!! love it!!... but, please, how did u extract the castledata out of the game??
This is just amazing. As a kid growing up in Sázava (Sasau), Czech Republic, I used to cycle to Talmberg ("Talmberk" nowadays) and climb to the ruin of the castle. It never seemed very spectacular to me - there's barely anything left of it, just the lower part of one tower and a few walls, most of which have been incorporated into some people's homes. I had absolutely no idea that the castle may have looked this amazing in the past, and I certainly could never have imagined that in some 15 years, there would be a guy on the other side of the globe who likes it so much that he decides to make a 100% realistic scale model of it. Anyway, great work!
That is an amazing story! So cool. Thank you for sharing that. I'd love to visit some of the old castles and ruins in the Czech Republic. You're a lucky man! :)
@@RealTerrainHobbies I am! Beautiful places, but I've always taken them for granted. Actually, as a teenager, I used to work as a tour guide at the Sázava (Sasau) Monastery as a summer job... If you do end up visiting these places, I highly suggest you come to the Sternberg Castle (Český Šternberk). It's a late medieval castle too, but unlike Talmberg, it's perfectly preserved (still inhabited by the Sternberg family btw), so it can give you an idea what Talmberg may have looked like a couple centuries ago. And it's only 20 minutes from Sázava by the local train.
At the end of the video, with the natural surroundings, I first thought this is a shot of the real castle and yours comes next as a comparison. But than I saw the minis standing in there. Crazy, how real this thing looks. I am absolutely amazed.

Perfect representation of the creative process. It can be messy but the results can be incredible. And the "self-sabatage" segment....again very relatable.

Talmberg Castle was my favorite location in KCD. On my first few playthroughs I insisted on actually going all night on guard duty. It was touches like that which made it clear to me KCD was special.
I love it. The b-Roll at the end was almost indistinguishable from what drone footage in a documentary of a real life castle would’ve looked like. Damn fine job Sir!
What an absolutely mental build. You can see every minute of work. I love the candid style. You can see stuff gradually coming together through a lot of effort.
I just want to say that this is by far my favorite series you have ever done. It’s probably top 3 among all the series I’ve ever watched in relation to this hobby. I would love to see you return to it and do interiors and the ground outside! And I hope we get another series like this in the future. Maybe taking some more designs from real life?
Hey thanks for the great feedback! Glad you are appreciating the series style content and I like the suggestion of taking more things out of real life. 🙂
I'm very impressed. I played through that game a couple times and I can say this is a very good replica of that castle. Seeing this video is very inspiring, I feel the urge to be creative myself!
Its stunning! And let me point out one little thing, that is (among lots and lots of other ones) amazing, but maybe not as obvious: that weathered wood color is the best I have ever seen! Its not like weathered wood, it is weathered wood!

Love your work. There is an easier way to divide a circle into 6 parts. Use the compass to make a circle of any size. Now, without changing the compass setting, place the needle anywhere on the edge of the circle and use the other end to draw a mark on the edge as well. Move the needle to that mark and repeat this process all around the circle. The result is not perfect, but close enough. Hope this helps.
I don't know anything about castles or crafting miniature models but I do know one thing for damn sure, I have never seen anything more impressive than this!
Thanks man, I just finished my work today thanks to you talking about self sabotage. I was watching TH-cam and lollygagging but thanks to you I went back to my work.
Man, that segment from around 12:00 really hit. I'm a game developer and even if terrain building and game dev are two different things, that feeling of " it's too hard/never gonan finish/this sucks" really plagues most of us. Thanks for the advice, and ofc, props for the superior build and awesome look of that castle 😊
I think the best part about Neil's videos is that no matter what the scale is, it's always presented in a way where I can look at it and totally understand how to use the techniques on smaller scale projects. I'm actually pretty excited to try out the wood work and plaster effect on something else!
Hey just wanted to say love the videos, I cannot believe you tackled this castle, it's inspiring me to get back to my much smaller but long dormant projects. Small painting tip! To level up your already strong painting, I would encourage you to play with different shading/highlighting colors than black and white, basically anything else. I notice that you wash the terrain and the castle walls with black, and then pull out highlights in white. A painting teacher pointed out that seldom is anything in nature truly black, or truly white, such that you're missing out on a lot of free naturalism by simply avoiding those pigments, or using them more sparingly. As in: try a black/brown (I love Vallejo's) or a burnt umber for your dark washes. Nearly as dark, but lends a more natural accent. Same with white: creams, light yellows, beige, really anything else but white-white, particularly when highlighting wooden beams as you so often do in your work. Unsolicited I know, but I think you'd be happily surprised if you try say a door or a small prop and try not using either pure black or white and see how the colors change for you. Good luck and keep up all the wonderful builds!
Incredible beautiful build. There is so much detail in every corner. ❤ I hope the complete template will be on your website, not only the first half. And best wishes for your wife.
Neil, I just want to say thank you for making these videos and showing us this process. While I myself doubt my own ability to make something this cool with my own hands, I am so inspired by your work and dedication. Your brief video segment on "self-sabotage" really spoke to me, as that is something I also tend to struggle with, but like you I am striving to do better! I didn't comment on the last video because I didn't want to sound corny or something, but (at the risk of sounding corny or something) do give my love to your wife and family. I'm sure they know how much we all sincerely appreciate you guys.
im just learning about d&d and got into a rabbit hole of minitures and maps, im so freaking intrigued im half way thru this vid and this is by far the coolest thing ive seen yet, i wana see a game played on a custom map, no one has that video yet!!
Remember that guy with the mindblow meme? Imagine me watching the wet dream of every modeller and tabletop gamer come to life, piece by piece. It's such a beautiful piece of work, I really hope there's an interior, this castle is too good to remain a hollow backdrop. Thank you for this strange and interesting journey. ^^
Phenomenal job! I gotta say, it looks so much more realistic and impressive in the natural daylight shots than in the interior/darker shots. Congrats! Well done!
Kingdom come: Deliverance was such an amazing game And it was so cool to see this place and knowing exactly where things are and how I used to enter the rooms from the stairs and all that
Oh hell yes. I look forward to what you will do next with the terrain and interiors. May it last more than just one more video. always fun to watch these!
I LOOOOVE the fact this creation is full of little flaws, errors, shortcuts and approximations. This is far more constructive and realistic, imho, to show how a "pro creator" gets his masterpieces done and his craft evolving, rather than polished/perfect videos so smooth you just get depressed, when trying yourself, and facing so many roadbumps. And the warning about self sabotage is also pure gold! As a long time creator myself, a lot of people tell me how they are just sabotaging themselves, thinking I'm impervious to those stuff, and just have some "magical infinite amount of motivation and positive attitude". Hell no. Just learnt with hard work to face and punch through those moments of doubts and downs. I hope it will spark the right set of mind in people wanting to take those kind of creation journey. This is an awesome video, for an awesome project, hats down!
Very nice. Looks really great. I was wondering how make the seam smaller. Maybe adding some strong magnets which would pull closer together two halves be a good idea?
Your work is absolutely inspiring my guy! I love how honest and open you are about your process! Preaching to a choir since it's all been said before - but you've inspired this hobbyist to tackle some of the projects I've been putting off for some grand finales for my players!
Man I just saw this random video and I was enchanted by your vibe. you are such a cool guy I'd love to play some board games and dnd with you and your kids I guess?? Keep it up dude
i've just finished watching all four vids of your work on the Talmberg castle, excellent work sir. the craftsmanship, the attention to detail, the ambition and commitment to create a model such as this. utterly amazing. I could never have done this. I don't have the equipment, the materials, the skill nor the patience to do something as epic as this. magnificent! the ending surprised me, almost thought it was the real castle, it looks so good!
This is very cool. Last year I went hiking through Talmberg and surrounding area, it was nice to compare what is in the KC:D game and what is actually remaining in reality. From Talmberg itself sadly almost nothing, but Rataje are pretty much the same.
This is so insane. I can absolutely understand the urge to just go into Sabotage mode during the last Part, always Start doing so with projects lasting longer than a day. I always dream about building a castle, and kinda did a modular one at least, but this thing is next Level man. I wish i had more storage to build one on my own. Was a pleasure to follow your process. Thanks for all your awesome builds.
Hey, I just wanted to say that you really inspire me and that I love your builds. I love to play DnD as well and I just finished my first miniature set, with the Krak Des Chevaliers for my medieval history project. I adore you and your builds and hopefully your back gets better soon!

I think the best part about Neil's videos is that no matter what the scale is, it's always presented in a way where I can look at it and totally understand how to use the techniques on smaller scale projects. I'm actually pretty excited to try out the wood work and plaster effect on something else!
Great guy who always makes great builds. Even the details are amazing. Thank you for posting great production video.
What a spectacular work from you. With so much attention to Detail. Very very nice. I am really excited.
I am utterly in love with this build! Brilliant work! (And big hugs to your wife.)
I’m a Japanese illustrator. I was deeply impressed with your craftmanship. Your works are very beautiful, amazing, and fantastic.
Your videos are amazing and of superior quality to any other youtube channel I currently watch. Keep it up
Hey just wanted to say love the videos, I cannot believe you tackled this castle, it's inspiring me to get back to my much smaller but long dormant projects.
I hope the complete template will be on your website, not only the first half.
And best wishes for your wife.
Ahh man.. I remember when I got into Talmberg Castle the first time on 1440p.
so beautiful, soon I will revisit it in 4K !
Congrats! Well done!
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Love how you fixed up that courtyard.
Kingdom come: Deliverance was such an amazing game
And it was so cool to see this place and knowing exactly where things are and how I used to enter the rooms from the stairs and all that
Oh hell yes. I look forward to what you will do next with the terrain and interiors. May it last more than just one more video. always fun to watch these!
I’ve started my own castle… wish me luck. Thanks for all the awesome content but most of all thanks for the inspiration.
One of the most amazing build projects I've seen. Absolutely incredible detail. Great job.
What an amazing result, enjoyed the production quality too.
Very nice. Looks really great. I was wondering how make the seam smaller. Maybe adding some strong magnets which would pull closer together two halves be a good idea?
The Camera moving while the timelapse is so absolutely amazing bruhhh
TH-cam know what is really nice and recommended this. Nice process and result!
Your work is absolutely inspiring my guy! I love how honest and open you are about your process! Preaching to a choir since it's all been said before - but you've inspired this hobbyist to tackle some of the projects I've been putting off for some grand finales for my players!
Wow! Those exterior, outdoors shots were really impressive! For a split second I was totally fooled! Amazing work!
Phantastic! What a passionate love to all the details! Both thumbs up!!!
Man I just saw this random video and I was enchanted by your vibe. you are such a cool guy I'd love to play some board games and dnd with you and your kids I guess?? Keep it up dude
dude that is amazing... fantastic work... i love watching your videos... your work is phenomenal... keep up the great work
i've just finished watching all four vids of your work on the Talmberg castle, excellent work sir. the craftsmanship, the attention to detail, the ambition and commitment to create a model such as this. utterly amazing. I could never have done this. I don't have the equipment, the materials, the skill nor the patience to do something as epic as this. magnificent!
the ending surprised me, almost thought it was the real castle, it looks so good!
Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking the time to go back and watch all the videos! 🙂❤️
Hey,
I just wanted to say that you really inspire me and that I love your builds. I love to play DnD as well and I just finished my first miniature set, with the Krak Des Chevaliers for my medieval history project. I adore you and your builds and hopefully your back gets better soon!
Wow!!! I can't wait to see your next big project. Between Mel The Terrain Tutor, Tabletop Witchcraft and yourself , all have done some pretty epic builds. I can see a miniature Charlton Heston charging out on to the drawbridge one day!!!
Best model maker on TH-cam? I believe so. This is incredible.
Absolutely amazing Work. With the Natural light it is breathtaking!
Oh wow!! Especially the footage outside makes it look so real! Great work.
