    Man is it fortunate you got one of these a few months after I got my 750, these videos are a godsend. I wish you luck for when you get a new set of fairings and have to stick the lower frontal fairing back on..

      @matttriestodothings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I'm a long way off from fairing mounting, unfortunately. I believe I'm missing some mounting brackets and I know for sure that many of the tabs on both the front (headlight) fairing and side fairings are completely busted up. I need to get the thing actually running first and ridden to know if aesthetics (fairings) are going to deserve much attention yet. This thing is a mess, but it should be an interesting project. I saw a really nice looking 1990 VFR 750 listed on marketplace just recently and I was kicking myself thinking... I should have just bought that. It would have been way cheaper than what this thing is going to end up being. Oh well. It'll be cool to get a first year VFR7 going.

    Nice! Also loosen both the upper and lower boot clamps on those rears and it will drop in to place even easier.

    Thank you!!! I've been fighting the SOB's for 2 days after a carb clean and rebuild. God they are a pain in the ass! Shoe horn them in. That's the ticket!

      Yep. I've fought many times with them and thought there was no chance they were *ever* going back in. This method really does make it much much easier. It still takes some patience and trail and error, but you'll get it. Just keep the boots hot and lubed with a bit of red rubber grease. Good luck.

    Good job man, I call that the shoe-horn method, it's the best of any method I've ever tried (and erred).

      @matttriestodothings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hah, I was thinking about how tiny "shoe horn" type tools would be even better. I'm sure I'm way late to this party and someone invented some purpose-built carburetor shoehorns 20 years ago.

    Matt, I wish you'd bought your VFR a few years ago.... it would have saved me all that bother with the ratchet straps!😆 Keep up the good work, I'm enjoying the videos.

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  ปีที่แล้ว

      Alistair, it was actually one of your vids I was watching that made me think of doing this one. Ratchet strap was the only thing that made sense to me the first time I seated them on my vf500, and I got dangerously close to exploding my whole carb set.
      I watched your whole series on the carburetor. You're a great narrator, by the way! And that bike of yours looks just pristine. Thanks for giving me another way to learn about these things with your vids.

      Upon rewatching this vid, I could see how my tone could come off as condescending or know-it-all. That wasn't my intention at all. I just know on retrospect how close I was to really damaging mine because one method I tried was routing the tie under the plenum and around carbs 2/4. i.imgur.com/7McCJYj.jpg

      @@matttriestodothings I honestly didn't find your commentary condescending in the slightest. I just wish I'd tried softening up the rubbers with the hairdryer before I resorted to brute force. Good luck with your VFR. Can't wait for the next installment.

    i own 3 '86 vfrs and to make carb install alot easier ive used a file to reshape the sections that meet the rubbers, breaking the sharp blunt end into a curved section that slides in easily without tools, taking about 1-2mm off the end diameter.

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jerryeinstandig7996 I don't think I ever would have even considered that. Just 1mm or a better angle would make it a lot easier. I'm hoping I don't have to have these on and off too many more times, but that's certainly something to think about. Thank you for the tip.

      This is the trick that's saved me more time than any other. It's so defeating after getting the carburetor all cleaned and rebuilt and then having no freakin' idea how to reseat the carburetor because it just physically doesn't seem to make sense.

    Ya well on early magna's carbs have to slide in under frame , way harder. yes I used strap , was careful so I didn't break em.

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not saying you can't use a strap--only that it's dangerous because it puts a huge load on the plenum of the carburetor. I've done it before.

  • @TravisDoesGames

    I suggest replacing the 30-40 year old intake boots. It makes installing and removing the carbs easier

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm guessing these are no more than 10 years old. They're still very soft surprisingly. I'm unable to find knockoffs for this bike and the $80 for OEM replacements could go a lot of other places on this bike.
      This thing is going to be a money pit.

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You meant once the carbs are back in you cannot rotate the clamps.
    What about using a couple of right angle picks to pull those boots back?

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes--you can't rotate the clamps *after* the carburetors have been seated in them. I see I didn't make that clear.
      You could use a 90° pick as well. The reason I don't is because I think with it being smaller thickness it'd increase the risk of tearing the boot.

    I remember using a 2x4 to pry the carbs back onto my 500 Interceptor with WD40, it was a total PITA.

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  ปีที่แล้ว

      First time I tried to do it on my VF500 I had a 2x4 around the bottom and another probably 1/2" board around the top and a ratchet strap. I was exerting so much pressure with the ratchet strap it snapped the board in half. Scared the shit out of me. Somehow got lucky that the carburetor didn't give first. I read a post from a senior member on the VFRWorld forums about doing this instead and... well, it's one hell of a lot less scary.
      I'd been wanting to shoot this vid for a while but I don't have a good way to show it. I didn't do a great job showing it in this one either but I wanted to keep the installation part unedited to show it's possible. Unfortunately the reason I even bothered to shoot it is because these carburetors are too trashed to actually function correctly.

      @@mikeyjay1970 Yea this tip wouldn't have come out of a manual. I know it's easy to knock on the internet for bike information because of the prevalence of facebook, tiktok, and other shit, but the bike-specific forums still have a lot of good information. I've literally never read about anyone else doing it this way besides the one guy that suggested it. I've read a Honda bulletin/note about it from the period, and it's... lengthy. with a lot math. too much for my smaller brain to deal with. This is easier.
