You are definitely my curly godmother. I'm an old lady who discovered your videos after i lost my sister, Amanda! I was heartbroken and so alone. I had been straightening my hair for years but my sis always loved my curly hair ( she was probably the only one who remembered them). So I've been on my curly(natural hair, I'm going gray too)journey for about 2yrs or more I'm still struggling (with my hair and my seester being gone) but you've helped me so much! Just wanted to give you a big thank you for all of this!! THANK YOU MEL & AMANDA!! Ya'll are so beautiful and fun. Cherish each other always and stay close to each other! Can't wait to see what's to come!! Really thank ya'll!!

Mel can you do a video for us curl gals who have gone naturally grey? With and without purple products. Went grey early and the struggle is real.

    • @sprite65
      @sprite65 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, that's what I want to know too! I went to my natural gray about six years ago. I wash once a week and prefer to use a purple shampoo to keep my hair shiny and white. Then I question, when would I use a clarifying shampoo, etc. LOL

    • @Jenloves780
      @Jenloves780 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@sprite65Don't use drugstore purple shampoo actually maint purple shampoos are harsh on the scalp and "clarifying" shampoos are also harsh on the scalp using both could real havoc on your scalp. My scalp is now excessively oily and dried out my hair. Use a professional/salon shampoo for majority of washes and shampoo twice the second time use less lather. You don't need to use alot of the shampoo so it can last. Check out the Blowout Professor there is a correct way to wash your hair to get out all the buildup and not damage hair. I found him during my continuous journey to fix my hair and scalp. Also using harsh shampoo on your scalp can cause excess sebum like I said oily scalp which can lead to a yeast infection of scalp. I unfortunately am trying to get rid of one I used to much harsh purple shampoo then to top it off went to bed with wet head. I used to have such healthy hair. This situation is maddening. I also never realized how much work is involved trying get my curls to do what they used to.

I don't know what Mel says... I have Grey, and it is white around my face I use blue from matrix once a month. Rest of time lus. My hair is not yellowing and shiny. I clarifying once in a while with twist.

This would be useful as hell. I'm 36 and I think little bits of Gray's are coming out already by 33 or 34 not that I mind lol. But the texture seems difficult for me😮

Honestly you helped me so much this year with finding my curls. I'm 13 and have fine 2c/ 3a curls and I have had a HUGE struggle finding product (i'm the only one in my family with long curly hair). My hair was always going wavy after a day or two after washing but now I can go 4-5 days with my hair curly! Love your videos and hope you keep posting!!!

Hi Mel, my name is Deb, and I found your channel when my hair texture changed from straight to wavy/curly due to hormone changes from perimenopause in 2020. I was struggling with how to take care of this new hair texture and always looked like a frizzy sea hag. I don't really know how to categorize my curls but when I use the denman brush I get these pretty ringlets. My hair is a little shorter than Amanda's hair. I have learned so much from you on products which I never had to use before and how to dry my hair. My most underrated product is the microfiber towel by the perfect haircare. My most used product is alligator clips when I refresh my hair. I put hairspray on them and use them to hold my bangs up and to help the huge cowlick on the backside of my crown to properly dry in place. Thank you for all the tips I have learned fro you and Amanda. No more frizzy sea hag for me! 😂

Merry Christmas everybody, I’m Deb and I’m really new to curly hair… it only showed up after I went bald due to chemo treatments a few years ago.
I’m very lucky that my hair has grown back quickly, so I now have a LOT of shoulder-blade length, fine 2B (i think) virgin hairs. I’m in my late 50’s so I also have “the twist” of hair changes as I age. Woohoo! I needed a good challenge. I’ve been trying many of Mell’s suggestions and here’s what is and isn’t working for me right now.
    1. Most valuable product: AG thermal setting spray - I hate fly-aways and this spray lets you smooth those down & holds all day. Not sure this is how it’s intended to be used but you can even brush your hair through the next day and tie it back with continued great control the next day without reapply more spray… seems like magic!
    2. Most surprising: Verb hair oil - I had this impression that hair oil would leave an oily mess on things but it doesn’t! The Verb hair oil makes my hair feel like silk.
    3. Most disappointing: Amazon - Silk Bonnet Sleep Cap - a large, adjustable, satin lined sleep bonnet/cap. Either I have a super big melon or my impression of large is very different than the companies!
    4. Most expensive fav’s: I don’t have these but I’m hoping to one day - the Dyson Airwrap, Microfiber PHC towel and Aveda night serum
    5. Most affordable fav’s: Mark Anthony Hair & Scalp DETOX line AND Herbal Essences coconut milk and aloe hydrating hair mask
    6. Most underrated: Shea Moisture manuka honey & yogurt hydrate and repair protein power treatment
    7. Best innovation: the tangle teezer double sided comb… I love it… I just wish they made the handle with more grip. I find that my hands slip because of the product I’m trying to put into my hair
    8. Most used product of the year: Verb shampoo and conditioner
    9. Most used brand overall: Verb with AG a close second
    10. Best brand: Dyson… I love their hair tools and also their other products (I have their hand vacuum and fan) everything they make is superb quality
I hope this helps someone out there. I definitely don’t have the right set up for my hair yet but I’m closer than I was when I was surprised with this new type of hair a few years ago!
Santa - if you’re listening… all I want for Christmas is for everyone to be healthy and happy… and a hair consul by Mell!

I have 3a curls that I’m growing from a pixie into a bob, and I’m currently so close to Mell’s length! I’m so excited to start playing with my hair again. This is my 2023 curly Unwrapped.
Most valuable player/product: aveda nutriplenish leave in. This always gives my hair the hydration I need and protects it from damage, and it’s super lightweight. I love it so much.
Most surprising: innersense I create definition foam. I didn’t think I was going to like this, because I usually don’t like foams, but baby does this have HOLD! And it’s lightweight and smells great.
Most disappointing: ecoslay orange marmalade gel. Almost no hold for me, my curls dropped after a couple hours, I was really disappointed.
Most expensive fave :my Dyson. Enough said.
    Most affordable: treluxe
Best innovation : Starting to use hairspray on my hair. I use hard hold hairspray on my hair before I diffuse and flexible hold after I scrunch out the crunch. I’ve best using L’Oreal elnett hairsprays and it’s been such a game changer for the longevity of my set.
Most used products: aveda nutriplenish leave in and innersense I create definition foam. I have used them almost every washday for months.
Most used brand overall : innersense. They have nothing I’ve tried that I’ve ever even disliked. It’s expensive, but so so worth it.
    Best brand: innersense
I hope everyone has a wonderful winter season!

Mel, been watching you for over a year. At 50 my hair suddenly became curly….mostly. Lol. My hair is just below the shoulders with half the hair wavy and the end is a tube of curl. Also had way over colored/high lighted hair and it was so damaged. During pandemic I stopped coloring. I’m working on getting the ends healthy while my hair grows and keeping the new growth healthy. Your curl girl tips have saved me so much frustration. Thank you!

Background: I have coarse, high-density, low-porosity, 3A-3B (I guess?) hair. I value you a wash day that is going to last me a full 7 days, even with some light abuse. I like big buns and I cannot lie, I play with my hair, and smush it in my sleep. My routine just has to deal with all that and still look great. I also live in New Orleans where it’s humid as hell. Tall order. I have also been trying to get my cost per wash down this year. Mell, your tips about splurging on products that touch the scalp has been very helpful for me. My routine is cheaper and better than it’s ever been and this channel has been incredibly useful in helping me understand the “why” and “how” behind products. I love the scientific approach and the debunking you do of other curly-girl-hive-mind stuff. So thank you my curly queens!!
    Here are my awards:
    1. Most valuable player/product
Curlsmith Weightless Air Dry Cream! The perfect foundation for my styling routine.
    2. Most surprising product
LA Looks X-Treme Gel. I’ve used it for years, but I found a new way to use it that is a pleasant surprise. I found that in the past it’s given me great hold, but slightly more frizz. I started using it in the routine AFTER the Curlsmith Hydro Flexi Jelly gel, my “primer gel” I call it. The second gel application has been a game changer. My curls keep their shape on day 6 and 7. They would probably hold even longer but I wash when my scalp feels itchy. Using the nicer, weaker hold gel underneath locks in the hydration and coats my hair with the good ingredients, then I use the sticky gel on top of that like a glue, lol.
    3. Most disappointing product
A tie here! Curlsmith Diffuser. She broke! :’( Just up and died one day. Boo. That, tied with the Not Your Mothers Curl Talk Curl Cream. I try to make products work for me, even if they’re not my favorite, but this one I had to give away. It made my hair feel like straw.
    4. Most expensive favs: product
Briogeo Exfoliating Charcoal Shampoo Scrub. Works so well for my seborrheic dermatitis. I went through 5 8oz tubs this year, whoops! My scalp is consistently happy. I use it after the Twist Clarifying Shampoo which gets all the product out and let’s me focus on the scalp.
    5. Favorite Affordable: product
Sally’s Generic Value Product version of Aveda Shampure conditioner. YOOOOO. This conditioner is SO good, has the same ingredients and SCENT as Aveda and costs me usually $6 a bottle. It’s my holy grail conditioner now. I buy these when they go on the 4 for $24 sale and have used 6 bottles this year so far.
    6. Most Underrated product
Can I do a whole product category here? HAIRSPRAY. I use the Moroccan Oil Luminous Hairspray and I adore it. Sometimes even after my two gels I realize I need more hold after diffusing. Hairspray is my bestie.
    7. Most innovative product
I can’t say that I’ve tried too many innovative products this year! As I mentioned earlier, I am trying to spend less money so I kinda went back to the basics and tried to make do with what I had! :) So N/A!
    8. My most used product this year
Curlsmith Hydro Flexi Jelly but also because my curly boyfriend also uses it. His hair is baby fine so it’s great we can find products that work for us both!
    9. Most used brand overall
Tie between Curlsmith and Sally’s GVP.
    Thank you again.
    Happy Holidays

Hi Mell! My name is Melina. I have 2c/3a hair that has never been colored nor has been chemically straightened. I've been trying a lot of new products this year, but MVPs and most used have to be the Reflex Curl Styling Serum by TréLuxe, Verb x Mell curl foaming gel, and the Eva NYC mane magic 10-in-1 primer.
I'm in my 40s and started embracing my curly hair in the early 2000s after reading the Curly Girl Handbook. I've tried A LOT of different techniques, routines, and products. Much of which I learned from watching your channel, so thank you! ♥️♥️ My hair texture is thin with medium porosity. I can always use more volume! 💁🏼‍♀️
•Most valuable player/product: Twist by Ouidid Weather up lotion
•Most surprising: the Perfect Haircare microfiber towel- I was shocked how much I love this towel. I really cannot live without it!
•Most disappointing: DevaCurl Ultra Defining gel- I tried this product a few times but it was not enough moisture or hold for my hair. Glad I only purchased a travel size.
•Most expensive fave: CurlSmith In-Shower Style Fixer gel- My fine hair LOVES this gel and gives me sooo much volume.
•Most affordable: Carol’s Daughter Wash Day Delight Jelly-to-Cream Conditioner- I LOVE this stuff after a light shampoo. It’s lightweight and conditions so well.
•Underrated: Not Your Mothers Maximum Hold Gel- it pairs well with the NYM Hair Cream. Love them both.
•Best innovation: I don’t get too fancy with it but I’d say the Perfect Haircare towel.
•Most used products this year: CurlSmith In-Style fixer gel, Twist Weather Up lotion, Carol’s daughter Wash Day conditioner, NYM Maximum hold gel & cream, OGX Coconut Miracle oil.
•Most used brand overall: CurlSmith for sure. Not Your Mothers would be runner up.

I have two favorites this year...first is the Curl Smith Shine Gel. I have fine, high porosity, low density, 2c/3a hair that is not colored. While this gel is extremely thick and seemingly too much for my fine hair, it is perfect for my humid climate AND I can go about a week without washing it again if I use just a little of it watered down! It really does deliver nice shine without being over the top.
My second favorite isn't a product, but it's your tutorial on cutting our own hair into a bob. I did this and absolutely love it! I'm so appreciative you took the time to create this video for those of us who can't/can't afford/don't want to go to a salon. Thank you!

Hi Mell! I discovered your channel last winter & have been following you ever since, so thanks to you, 2023 has been a year of me falling in love with my hair again after getting burned out from many years of CGM. ❤️ My hair is medium texture, high porosity, 3B/3Cish. I had a bob a lot like Mell’s for years but in 2023 I’ve been growing it out (Mell & I have been on opposite hair journeys, haha) & I feel like I’ve been able to go long again in a HEALTHY way thanks to all I’ve learned here!
MVP: A tie between AG Re:coil & Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Leave-In Conditioner- these show up in my wash day routines most often for sure! Re:coil is for when I know the weather forecast will leave me limp by day 3 & I need to retain that bouncy curl structure. The Blueberry Bliss leave-in is super moisturizing in the winter especially but has a bit of protein too, which my hair loves!
Most surprising: Curlsmith Multi-Tasking Conditioner. How did they do this?? It really IS a great rinse-out, leave-in, AND deep conditioner, and it’s one of my favorites of all 3! I figured I would like it but I was not prepared to fall in love. CURLSMITH Y’ALL ARE WIZARDS.
Most disappointing: I can’t really think of one for this… some products this year haven’t been as successful as others, but even those have taught me something about my hair.
Most expensive fave: Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Stronger Hold gel. Amazing for summertime when it’s crazy humid- but I’m calling it the MOST expensive because my hair seems to want a lot of it 😭
Most affordable: Aussie Miracle Curls Curl Refresher. One of my faves on frizzy days- it’s just the right amount of hold.
Underrated: Curlsmith In-Shower Style Fixer. Hear me out: this gel doesn’t seem to get the love because it’s SO intense, but I’ve found that it’s my best gel for spot-fixing curls on refresh days. I always water it down quite a bit, & since I’m using it JUST for spot-checks, I’ve made a travel-size tube last for ages.
Best innovation: Tangle Teezer Scalp Exfoliator & Massager. Probably not innovative to EVERYONE but innovative to me! I was skeptical about this, but I use it every time I shampoo & it feels GOOOOD, & makes my hair & scalp feel so clean. I think it’s even helping me grow healthier hair!
My most used products this year: Curlsmith Multi-tasking conditioner, Maui Moisture Curl Quench conditioner (my other go-to conditioner when I need extra moisture, I’ve been using this for years & it still works great for me), Melanin Multi-Use Pure Oil Blend (which I haven’t found a place yet to mention but is definitely my favorite hair oil)
Most used brand overall: Curlsmith! I keep finding more stuff to try from them & it’s all been GREAT.
    Best brand: Curlsmith!

Love this, I am Sabrina and I have shoulder length fine wavy hair. The products that changed my waves for the better this year is Innersense and using a Laifen hairdryer (dyson dupe). My most used product that never fails is my Manes by Mel perfect hair towel, use it to microplop, use it to SOTC, refresh, love it. My tried and tru is the curl foaming gel by Verb & Mel. I've learned so much in 4 yrs of following. I have to say Aveda is on my wish list to get someday. Thank you for all you and Amanda do for this community.

I'm Claire, I have fine to medium textured 2B waves with medium porosity and these are my picks for 2023!
    1. Most valuable player/product: The Inkey List Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Scalp Treatment - as an oily scalp girl, introducing this product to my routine has been life changing. My scalp feels clean longer, and I have virtually no scalp acne and dandruff
    2. Most surprising: Pantene ProV Daily Moisture Renewal Conditioner - I used typical drugstore brands throughout my childhood and teens to good results, but I'd been convinced that they (and the silicones in them) were bad for my hair. Decided to try this $5 conditioner when I needed something simple and effective and it has done a great job
    3. Most disappointing: Acure Buildup Balancing Hemp and ACV Conditioner - got this as a set with the shampoo, since I wanted to try the clarifying shampoo and thought trying the conditioner couldn't hurt! Boy was I wrong- my hair felt like it had had significant chemical damage done to it (rough, brittle, breakage almost halfway up the lengths of my hair). Truly awful experience
    4. Most expensive favs: Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask - not the most expensive for some people, but for me an almost $40 hair mask is a splurge (although I do think it's a great hair mask)
    5. Most affordable: Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Dry Shampoo - a solid dry shampoo for a great price, what more could you ask for?
    6. Underrated: Shea Moisture Manuka Honey and Yogurt Leave-In Conditioner - maybe this is being talked about and I just don't know about it, but this leave in is fantastic. It does just the right amount of conditioning without weighing down my hair and more people should know!
    7. Best innovation: I can't think of anything for this category! I don't try a lot of hair tools and I wouldn't consider any of the products I've tried this year innovations, just good at what they do
    8. My most used products this year: My microfiber towels (not sure what brand, as I got them years ago)
    9. Most used brand overall: Eva NYC - from their 10-in-1 Primer to the Therapy Session mask, I use Eva NYC consistently and consistently get good results
    10. Best brand: Not Your Mother's - from the Curl Talk gel and mousse to their dry shampoos to their new Tough Love line, I have really enjoyed them this year!

The award this year for me goes to curlsmith particularly the fragrance free shine gel, fragrance free hair oil, heat protectant & air dry cream (scalp recipe line is amazing) because they always give me amazing results however I would also recommend innersense I create definition mousse which has an amazing hold.
I have 3A curls and these products are fantastic 😍

HI! I have fine medium length curly hair. I've followed your channel since 2020. Your video about why you dont follow the curly girl method is what made me start following you because at the time, I was on a journey learning how to take care of my curly hair and my friend followed the CGM. But I resonated with your method/ideology more and have followed ever since, so thank you! My go to product most days is the Briogeo Curl Charisma Curl Cream paired with some gel. Most surprising was the AG curl fresh definer - its perfect, lightweight and has hold! Most disappointing are most curlsmith products, they're too heavy for my fine hair. Most expensive was my diffuser. Most affordable is my gels from the drug store, I have so many im not going to list them all. Most underrated is the verb ghost oil; I've never used a lightweight oil that soaks into my hair and it truly doesn't weight down my hair. Best innovation is the Revlon hair dryer one step brush, It is so nice to blow dry my curly hair straight! I use the Verb ghost oil and the AG hair definer cream. I use Kristen Ess the most. She has a nice lightweight cream, along with a good cleanser shampoo. I love her lightweight hair conditioner mask. Her pink curly hair shampoo/conditioner are awesome too, so I highly recommend her line. They're all affordable and decent quality products. Best brand I've used so far is Kristen Ess.

Hi Mel!❤ I have long colour treated 3b curls fine textured hair and I struggle with volume . Unfortunately I do not live in a country where these products are easily accessible and if they are, they are sold at online stores for way more than they would normally go for, so I will just add the ones I feel would work for my hair needs.
    1. Living Proof full dry volume & texture spray ( I have fine hair and I really struggle with volume even after trying out all the techniques to add volume in my styling routine).
    2. Denman Brush ( I still use this and I love it)
    3. Dyson Airstraight ( because I myself like versatility of tools, and because I would get more bang for my buck if I could do more with it)
    4. Dyson Airwrap ( I totally agree with this)
    5. Marc Anthony Repair Bond leave in treatment ( I love this, we have it in my country and it’s very affordable)
    6. Bounce Curl Smoothing Brush ( simply because I have a similar brush and it does the job for those slicked back styles and I love it)
    7. Not your Mothers Intense Bonding treatment ( this is an affordable dupe and I really need this for the damage I have because of my colour)
    8. Bebonia Curly Slip on Extensions (totally agree with this one)
    9. Aveda Nutriplenish overnight replenishing serum ( I’ll leave it like this because we don’t have any of these)
    10. Aveda ( I don’t have any of these in either but if I could get it I would use Aveda more as I can’t afford a Dyson yet 😅)

Short curly auburn colored hair. Eva NYC hair mask has been my go to for years! Also use ouai detox cleansing shampoo, Curlsmith curl define soufflé, hold me softly style balm and flexi jelly (winter). The red label ouidad advanced climate control gel for summer. Along with your micro fiber towel makes my hair curly, bouncy, shiny and with a medium hold that lasts for a week between washing. I just use a spray bottle with plain water on a daily basis to revive my curls and sleep with a cap on blissy pillow cases.

For the past year I’ve stuck to the same few products but I’m hoping to experiment a bit more next year. My absolute favorites and most used (while also being affordable) are:

Hi there! Mell, I just love your channel and all of your reviews and information. Being a fellow Canadian curly girl from just outside Toronto, I love your and your seester’s recommendatuons.
I have long, coarse, dry, 3A hair that is colour treated at the roots (yay for grey hair 🤦‍♀️). My hair LOVES moisture and HATES protein!
    My awards:
Most valuable player/product: Aveda nutriplenish daily moisturizing treatment (leave in conditioner). This is part of my holy grail hair routine that I have finally discovered this year! I use it on wash day generously, as well as on some refresh days. I am dying to try the aveda overnight serum and the bond building styling by cream. Those will be my next products.
Most surprising: the verb curl/gel. I hate the feeling of product in my hair and for this purpose usually stay away from gel, but this cream gel has been life changing and I use it every wash day and some refresh days and it holds and is very flexible. I LOVE LOVE
    LOVE THIS!
Most disappointing: Curlsmith moisture memory reactivator. I have struggled to find a spray in product for refresh days (I finally did with aveda nutriplenish leave in conditioner spray). The Curlsmith left me with the biggest frizz ball on my head and really dried out my hair. I was surprised by this because I love their double cream deep quencher deep conditioner as well as their hold me softly style balm, and all of them are from the same product line.
Most expensive faves: definitely my Dyson hair dryer and diffuser that I got last Christmas. What a game changer!!!! I can actually dry my hair pretty quickly now and it lasts a long time. I would love to try the straightener/hair dryer! Other most expensive faves are definitely the olaplex hair oil and K18.
Most affordable: this would have to be my shampoo which is called La Mane borage oil silk shampoo and it lives up to its name. It is so hydrating and silky that it honestly feels like I don’t even need conditioner with it, but I could never go without conditioner. Lange is always having sales on their products and I usually get the shampoo for just $9!
Most underrated: Curlsmith double quench deep moisture deep conditioner. I actually use this every other wash day and sometimes every wash day. I wash my hair every 5-7 days. I thought this product would be too heavy for my hair, but boy was I wrong. The is definitely what my hair has been missing. I’ve been on my curly hair journey for over 5 years now and I’m so thankful to find this conditioner to complete my wash day hair.
Best innovation: the Manes by Mell perfect hair towel!!! Wow, this is definitely a game changer. It is so smooth and the most drying towel ever! It soaks up so much when you think it would hardly hold anything. This towel comes with me everywhere, in fact I have just ordered a second and am wanting to get one for my identical twin seester!
My most used products this year: aveda nutriplenish daily moisturizing treatment, the Verb cream gel and Curlsmith hold me softly style balm.
Most used brand overall: Aveda followed closely by Curlsmith
    Best brand: definitely Aveda
Much love to you Mel, your sister Amanda and your family. Wishing you much love, happiness and health this holiday season and in the new year.

I’m 43 years old and have been on a curly hair journey since puberty I would say about 12. My hair wouldn’t grow until I was a junior in High school and it seemed to keep getting shorter and curlier. I’ve been cutting my on hair for years and have learned great techniques from you along the way. About ten years ago I all of a sudden start losing a lot of hair and of course was really worried about it. I went to the Doctor they ran test etc. I stopped putting any extra heat on my hair I haven’t straighten my hair for like 10 years I had stopped using Aveda hair products and was really paying attention to ingredients. I have since been able to re-introduce those time and true signature Aveda hair products back. My hair has changed over the years it was at it’s longest down to my mid back I recently cut it myself to about a little above bra length. I don’t do conventional coloring I use natural henna however I do like the thought of color coloring my hair but I’m really scared of the hair colors, dyes, and the toxins that are in those. If you have any suggestions about he least toxic color dyes it be appreciated. I love your hair color in this video and would love to have that myself. I’m getting more whites in my hair so I’m thinking maybe I’ll just kinda let it go I am not sure yet. So I have a lot of different textures in my hair cause it’s changed over the years and I have different curl patterns. Thank you for your sharing your expertise as well as your sis Amanda. I too have a sis and older sister Amanda and she straightens her hair most of the time.:( I’m sure you already have suggestions or a video somewhere but I’ve noticed more texture changes towards the crown where it usually gets flat for everybody. My hair is getting whiter in that particular area on my head the curl is not as tight as what’s around my face. I did some finger curling and pinned it a technique I’ve been doing for years. It could also be I cut my own hair and maybe I don’t know how to shape it or blend it as well back there. Thanks again. I’ll probably be getting that wide tooth comb I know I need to get a big shower cap and sleeping on it so I’ll be going to your Amazon page to check out your product suggestions.
