    Personally the way I saw the devacurl damage lawsuit back then is... When a brand gets bigger and bought by a bigger corporation, there will be changes made somewhere along the production line to accommodate for the extra demand. I don't think it's unlikely that something went wrong (maybe a bad supplier? An accident with improper storage? Something else?) and that some batches of products actually did get spoiled and cause damage. I remember many people assuming it was all simply hair loss caused by buildup but it's really difficult to armchair diagnose such a thing if you haven't seen someone's daily routine up close.
    Olaplex, on the other hand, is a specialty product that requires at least a basic understanding of hair science to use properly - THAT is a product I can believe that people are using improperly and causing damage as a result. I still don't like siding with companies over consumers (because in the end most companies will come out of a lawsuit with little more than a fine and a slap on the wrist), but at least I can see how this could have been caused by improper product use

      Don't forget how common it is to damage your own hair to blame a product to get money. They need to prove it very thoroughly until then I think they're after money or idiots who can't use it properly.

      THANK YOU. I use Olapex daily and have for 4 years because I bleach my hair platinum and have curly hair. MY 👏 HAIR 👏 IS 👏 HEALTHIER 👏 BECAUSE 👏 OF 👏 IT 👏
      These are alleged injuries right now, so before everyone goes alllllll crazy accusing Olaplex for damaging peoples hair WAIT TO SEE IF THE LAWSUIT STICKS. This product has been used thousands and thousands of times and 30 people have said it damaged their hair?
      If it turns out to be that they bought their products on discount from Amazon and NOT from a certified retailer I'm going to lose it.
      Devacurls lawsuit did actually turn into a settlement so.... I'm just saying 🤷 (I also use Devacurls products)
      Just wait until the lawsuit is finished before publicly ridiculing the company

    • @tiffaniwerner4256
      @tiffaniwerner4256 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Yea I don’t think the Deva Curl lawsuit is a fair comparison to Olaplex. I used to be a hair stylist of 7 years and I definitely think it should’ve only remained available to professionals because of the reasons you stated. There was 100% something wrong on the manufacturer’s end at Deva Curl because you don’t need a hair stylist to use their products. Also, they blamed customers hair build up when they had a clarifying product so that’s dumb. I lost about 1/3 of my hair to DC products and also had scalp irritation. I’m good now but literally thousands of women have the same and worse chronic issues due to DC products. There’s no other explanation and it’s so annoying that their products are still sold in stores.

    I think what I most dislike about my curly hair journey is the money and time spent on ineffective products. I have donated manyvand still have a drawer full of stuff I wont ever use. What I like best is figuring out what products give the best results at any point in time. I finally realized that just because something worked beautifully last year doesn't mean I should buy multiples because things change...including how my hair behaves.

I went home and cried and realized just how much my hair had changed. You are right that we need to change up our routines to suit our current hair. @@patricialamb7311 I use AG recoil (a pretty small amount!), I brush it through. I then use a little bit of the curlsmith volume foam on my roots. I then finish with the AG mousse gel or liquid effect gel. Then I diffuse. I personally don’t do much brush styling because my hair has a tendency to clump into giant curls and the mousse seems to encourage good clumping. I use ghost verb oil to scrunch out the crunch and on non-wash days to tame a little frizz. If I need to refresh, I just use a little water and the mousse (the NYM curl talk mousse is also great)

It can be used on wet or dry hair. Mell, I love ya! Great video! I love the explanation on exactly what each product is good for. I have fine, thick hair, so I can use a little bit of heavier products because my hair is pretty thick. If I go lighter, my hair gets frizzier faster and doesn't hold as nicely after day 2.
    Just for kicks... I think you'd be interested to know that David Bowie's Changes was first released in 1971, not on the Shrek 2 soundtrack. That's like my beloved favorite song by The Monkees, I'm a Believer being totally identified with the first Shrek movie from a different band. It was originally released in 1967, and no one can sing it like The Monkees. 😂

    Great video. I'm still using that orange bonnet. The price is right and it's so comfortable. One of mine has gotten a little too loose and I'm making it tighter with bobby pins till I have a chance to sew it. I haven't found an adjustable bonnet that fits comfortably and doesn't slip over my eyes uncomfortably. Still using my Denman brush, but I've been on the fence about it. I get mixed results styling with it, it's probably partly cause I can't seem to master the technique. 😉 (I use a different brush - or my fingers - for detangling.) Haven't switched cause I don't want to spend a fortune trying different brushes.

    It's so funny because I actually finally got olaplex for the first time *after* I heard about the lawsuit. I have wavy hair and I'm altogether too lazy to try to maintain waves/curls between wash days, so my hair takes a ton of mechanical and heat damage because of my preferred styling methods. I could tell after the first use that I won't need to use olaplex 3 more than once a week, and may end up going down to twice a month. But I could also tell there was an immediate difference. I think it'll be a staple for me, at least for a while.

    • @vaskylark
      @vaskylark ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yup, it's too expensive to use more than once a month for me BUT I would use it once a week if I could afford it. That stuff is AMAZING. My hair is color damaged, dry and bleached blonde and Olaplex #3 gave my hair life again. Before I used it my curls were not even curls they looked like I used a crimping iron. After one use of Olaplex 3 I went from 2b/2c to 3A with spirals and ringlets for the first time in my life. Not only that but my hair is soft for first time in my life. I swear by that stuff!

    • @Lucy-vx2ls
      @Lucy-vx2ls ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vaskylark are you emulsifying it before you use it? It goes so much farther that way. I was able to get 3 uses out of the 1oz sample I originally started with and I have coarse, medium length, medium/high density hair. I think it's just easier to tell where the product is and to feel it in your hair once it's been emulsified since it gets thicker and more opaque.

    • @vaskylark
      @vaskylark ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Lucy-vx2ls I am emulsifying! I get three uses out of the small, 3.3 ounce bottle and honestly I need to use more but I try to make it last. Last time I braved the brush in hopes it would spread the product more evenly. You can't see the product in my hair at all so I know I'm not using enough. Last time I went for it and used half the bottle and the results were amazing. My husband told me my hair looked like it used to in my 20's only much curlier. I have very thick, course hair and dry, dry, dry and a whole lot of it and it's long! It was down to my butt but I recently cut ten inches or so off all to make it healthier and to get rid of gravity weighing it down. Olaplex works. Love the stuff! Only thing that really works on my hair and I've tried other masks and every conditioner known. I am shocked at how well it works.

    I think the main problem with Olaplex x Deva is that Deva had a lot of plant extracts, which can change, degrade, answer to the environment a lot more than olaplex. From my memory, Olaplex doesn't carry any substance (save it patented molecule) that isn't being used in other products.
    The problem may have come of new people leaving it too much time on their hair. I know. I once left it on my hair for 24h to see if anything would go different from my usual 1h.
    I am using mine just fine, but I am moving away to Elizavecca CER-100 because the hype is real for this product.
    However, let's hope it was a problem with a batch instead of something else.

    I've been having my hair professionally pre-lightened and direct dyed for almost 7 years now. Unfortunately, during quarantine times, I did it MYSELF AT HOME TWICE over that first year. During the second pre-lightening, I ran out of lightener and had my family member buy me more from the grocery store, and THEN on top of that, found out my cousin was dying. That lightener was on my roots for somewhere between 4-6 HOURS that day. Shockingly, none of my hair broke off that day, or in the first year after, but now those roots are my mid-shaft/ends since I'm a quick-growing wavy girl at shoulder length. I'm constantly trying to find the right balance of products that do equal parts of protection of my Pulp Riot direct dye salon color, repair to my breaking mid-shaft, and improvement of my waves’ definition and shine. Olaplex No. 3 has been in my routine since Christmas, but I don't know if it's helping on its own. I use the conditioner, but the shampoo removes too much of my beloved fashion colors! I really put myself in a pickle.
