U know what as a Liverpool fan the rivalry between the two clubs was toxic in the 80s. Like Liverpool fans singing the Munich runway song with busby in the stadium is actually disgusting. You could hear the Munich song 2 mins in. United fans were no saints either with the shankley 81 chants or mocking Liverpool’s poverty issues in the 80s. I can’t stand United but I’d rather the rivalry be about the footy not people dying because that’s just disgusting and low or mocking social issues which is quite ironic now isnt it
The worst thing about this fixture is the Munich and hillsborough chants. Absolutely disgusting. I first went to anfield to watch United play Liverpool in the 85/86 season. It was scary as young kid with my Dad getting to the ground and getting back to the train station. The atmosphere in the ground was brilliant apart from the Munich and Shankley songs. I’m all for the witty songs and banners but not crap like that. The amount of Munich ‘58 flags at heysel was crazy. They didn’t need to do that as Liverpool used to have some really clever and witty flags.

I wasn’t born until 2001 but I can say the creation of the premier league has generally reduced hostilities between fans like the Utd&lpool games aren’t as hostile anymore imo.
United had a great record at anfield in the 80s and a great record against liverpool generally. Beat them again in the cup semi final shortly after this
