Match Of The Day 07/11/1981 Liverpool v Everton

  • Not much of a footie fan myself but plenty of people are, so I thought I'd share this - highlights of Liverpool v Everton on 7th November 1981, introduced by Jimmy Hill and Bob Wilson. Not bad quality for a 30 year old Video 2000 tape. It cuts out after 23 minutes but I don't think there's much missing (apart from Everton's late goal!) Commentary by John Motson.

The first season of 3 points for a win.
Liverpool were struggling around this time and were in 10th place on Boxing Day. Lots of new faces like Grobbelaar, Whelan, Rush, Lawro etc. had come into the side.
They still managed to turn it around and win the league, the first of 3 in a row. Incredible season.

Grobelaar was world class - behave yourself soft lad - he was a constant accident waiting to happen. Whelan, Johnson, Hansen and Lawrenson were not world class. Hansen couldn't even make the 86 world cup squad for Scotland! What is so amazing is that only three years after this game, Kendall had created a side with no money, we had to change banks just to buy Peter Reid for 60,000, that played Liverpool off there own pitch. Our whole side in 84 cost less than what Liverpool paid for Walsh and Lawrenson.

It's great to see football from this era. Love the old strips with no sponsors. Crowds that made a noise, no diving and players not ridiculously paid. And it really looks like November, as well.

Same here. I hate the pitches and the ball that flies about like a rocket. And tackling, was every bit as satisfying as a Dalgish goal. I can't understand what 20th century fans see in the 21st century football. It's just not football. I won't even watch world cups. I can watch & enjoy today's rugby as much as it was in the 70s. The essence of game is still there albeit there's more muscle 💪. And the 🤑 money, that's all football is about now.

  • @davidgbarron

Interesting to see the teams from that day. Liverpool having Lawrenson, Whelan, Rush and Grobbelar as new or relatively new players. Everton look unrecognisable from the team that would life the 1st Division Title twice in the 1980s. It seemed the only player in the line-up that featured in the title winning side is Gary Stevens. What is even stranger is a Merseyside derby kicking off at 3PM on a Saturday, wouldn't happen now in the Premier League era.

It was the same at Goodison back then. Liverpool had thousands in the Gwladys Street and many more all over Goodison.
Everton would have a pocket of fans in the corner of the Kop and others peppered around the other stands too. The days before the derby was ruined.

Derby days the fans from both clubs would stand together, no problem at all, only the 'kop' end would traditionally not mix that much only because of the club sing songs. Maybe it's different now.

The volley by Whelan that led to the first goal, the vision and execution of the assisting pass for the second; that's top quality in any era. And my God, the football in the 80s and early 90s was more entertaining and the commentators' voices a pleasure to listen to rather than something to try and ignore. Peter Drury's tone of voice is awful, I have to mute the sound.

@@danyoutube7491 If you look at football matches from this era, it is played in a similar style to lower-end Championship/League One matches nowadays.
The ease at which teams passed through midfield, the long punts forward, the high number of crosses.
Of course, we do have much better quality pitches now, which helps a lot. And the players are probably significantly fitter due to better fitness training + diet plans + increased health consciousness.
Not to mention much more in-depth tactics due to computers and an increased focus on statistics.

@@zaidabraham7310 "the ease with which teams passed through mid-field." Did you watch the FA Cup final in May? Two Premier League teams?.. It cannot really be called Englands Premier League as so few Englishmen play in it. Clubs today are owned and financed by oil barrons, TV money and UpVC window salesmen (Glazers). Income is based on TV broadcasts rather than crowd numbers. Squads are made up of players who hail from most parts of the globe... it has become like American Football. It is only a matter of time before teams change their names to Manchester City Blue Sox, Liverpool Patriots, and the Watford Plastic Cowboys. Who finishes in the top six places is almost a formality...
I would agree about the higher fitness levels+diet plans+computer science, but then you can only beat what is infront of you. The European Cup remained in England from 1977-1983, now it is played by the elite teams for their elite prawn cocktail sandwich scoffers.
