    Since the 1990s, Singapore prison officials have been offering photo shoot services for death row inmates before their executions. It aims to give family members photo mementos of condemned loved ones. Singapore is among 55 countries around the world that still implement the death penalty for crimes, including murder, kidnapping and drug trafficking.

    I feel those who are against capital punishment because of their suffering family members, you are targeting at the wrong end. The convicts made the decision to try their luck, even though they knew what was going to be the outcome if caught, they themselves along with those who engaged them caused all the pain of their family members, not the law. On the contrary, having such law is the exactly to try to deter these people from committing, by warning them how serious the offend will be. So while we all feel sad for innocent family members, pls think for those families destroyed by drugs. For people who have yet to be caught either as a drug dealer or users, please spare a thought for your loved ones. The real debate is based on the number of assumptions the law has for them to impose the death penalty.
      Singapore is able to impose the death penalty under “reasonable assumptions”. Meaning you don’t have to confirm that the accused is a drug dealer, you only need enough reason to believe that the person is one. You can be charged under “conspiracy to smuggle”.
      On top of that, once accused, it Is guilty until proven innocent.

    Taking the photos is optional, not mandatory. If it's so emotionally painful, then don't take the photos. Better yet, don't traffic drugs! Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, all warn people in advance of the penalty for trafficking drugs so there is no excuse. No one can say, "I didn't know." Also, whenever you enter a country and you go through customs, they will ask questions such as, "Are these your bags? Did you pack these bags yourself? Do you know the contents of these bags? Did anyone ask you to carry something in your bags that was not yours?" If you are going to travel anywhere, whether it's a country that has the death penalty or not, you need to educate yourself about the country where you are going. So many people try to claim ignorance and say "I did not that such-and-such was a crime here." I want to tell these people, "Come on, man. Use your common sense. Don't be a fool."

    Whether we agree with singapores laws or not we have to respect them if we are in that country especially drug laws if you are caught with drugs straight away you are presumed to be trafficking in drugs and you must then prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you knew nothing about the drugs in your possession and that will be very difficult to do innocent people have been aquitted of drug charges in singapore in the past but not many and it isnt for the prosecution to have to prove you intended trafficking drugs because of the presumption of guilt in their laws dont smuggle drugs in singapore this is what you are facing i wouldnt do it for any money on earth its not worth it it is hard to feel sympathy for these people because most of them are just greedy and know what they are doing

    For the ignorant. The debate of death penalty vs no death penalty ISN’T based on how harsh should we be on drug dealers.
    This, is very controversial as there is a high chance of sentencing an innocent person.

    Most of the keyboard Socrates who chant "death to drug traffickers" have neither spoken to one before nor been to prison to experience the lives of those who grew up in dysfunctional families. The impact of their capital punishment reaches beyond just the individuals receiving the sentence to include their families, elderly parents, spouses, children, and friends.

    • @FrozenCappucino
      @FrozenCappucino 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m from a dysfunctional family. I have never thought of trafficking drugs and nor have my friends or siblings in the same plight. My friends who have sold drugs, albeit small amounts, not enough for the death penalty, often say they did it because they mixed with the wrong crowd, got addicted and had to fund their addiction. I have this one friend who had to leave her kids to her mother yo raise because she and her husband were in and out of prisons 20 plus years.
      It was one of her greatest regrets. She became a grandmother recently and yet she told me she still feels somewhat like a young woman in her twenties because so much time has been ruined by drugs, rehab, prison for selling, etc
      At some point, we have to take responsibility for our actions.
      The law is clear as day, they knew the punishment and that Singapore is unwavering in our anti-drug crackdown. Yet, they decided to take the risk anyway. That’s on them.

      @@FrozenCappucino Appreciate your sharing of your unfortunate upbringing, yet you are fortunate to not cross path with the criminals lurking in the less fortunate settings. Punishment is a deterrence not a cure. It is ironic that Singapore has started the death penalty since 1975, and 50 years on the drug trafficking activities are still existing, pointing to the fact that death penalty is not the answer. It is a moral quandary but one that needs societal understanding of the root of drug addiction. Many of the addicts were introduced to drugs as young as pre-teen. Once addicted there is no return. Many resort to selling drugs to feed their own consumptions. We have been killing the mules for 50 years but the kingpins behind this evil trade continues to blossom. Believing that death penalty is the way to deal with drug issue is a blind dogma. That said, the Singapore government is doing it's best with rehab programs and job placements, but a huge missing piece is public education and societal reconciliation. Full rehabilitation requires sense of self-worth and acceptance, not hatred and rejection, by the society.

    • @shauntom5110
      @shauntom5110 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Despite emerging from a dysfunctional family, you're fortunate not to have encountered the criminals prowling in less fortunate circles like your friends did. Unfortunately, not everyone shares your luck. Some individuals become ensnared by addictive substances as early as preadolescence, and once addicted, escape seems impossible. Singapore implemented the death penalty for drug trafficking in 1975, yet even after 50 years, the issue persists, demonstrating that eliminating low-level traffickers does little to impede the kingpins of this malevolent trade, who continue to thrive. Nevertheless, the Singaporean government is making efforts through rehabilitation and job placement initiatives. However, a critical component missing from these efforts is public education and societal reconciliation. Sustainable rehabilitation demands a sense of self-worth and self-confidence, fostered by societal acceptance rather than condemnation. The failure of long-term rehabilitation isn't solely the fault of addicts; it's a failure of society as a whole, as it bears the cost.

    The death penalty is a stain on our societies. I get why people are for it but I think when people consider the consequences of the social instability it causes, the huge pragmatic issue of making sure you got the right person, and a lot of the damage it causes to the victim's family because death row cases take much longer (you have to at least try to make sure you got the right person) then it becomes untenable.
