The birthing and raising children part is often forgotten. I get his frustration but especially since women are in the minority due to the One child policy( so can demand more), also work and are expected to mostly raise children and take care of the household, its not the same for women and men.
If taking care of the home and the kids was a socially accepted 50/50 ,that would make me completely be on his side. Women are expected to do certain unpaid labor ,are held back in their careers due to it ( thats mostly the source of pay disparities between men and women) so its not strange that certain women want to make sure they have a partner that makes a lot since shell have to give up that security. And thats why with divorce often men ( the group that continues to work and can benefit from having kids without sacrificing their career) have to pay. Its not even really gendered cuz more and more women do that because their partner is a stay out home dad or something.
Many women have been left with nothing in the past but a couple of kids because they trusted their partners to work outside of the home and they just worked inside of it. Its not the same. Women spend the majority of their time working, doing housework, and raising children. It's simply unfair to try to make the situation appear any other way. Women in their 30s who haven't found a spouse are referred to as "leftover women," although males in their 40s are still considered valuable options for a relationship and marriage. In China, men and women have different social perspectives, and attempting to "raise awareness" as though they are equal is absurd. Furthermore, if a woman becomes pregnant, it will disrupt her work, reduce her chances of being recognized as a dedicated employee for the firm, and reduce her chances of advancement. If women take maternity leave, they risk losing their jobs.
Men are not subjected to any of these discriminations, thus it stands to reason that women must be self-aware of their own worth and refuse to settle for less when the entire world around them says otherwise and imposes sanctions that limit women's freedom. Women are subjected to harsh treatment in China and around the world. Don't pretend that men and women are treated equally. It's completely unjust.

Women in the world all tend to look for a man that can provide. Even now, many Western women (such as in the UK, Australia) are still paid less for doing the same job. They are also more likely to be made redundant from their jobs or pass up for promotion when they start bearing children. Fact is the competition is intense for resources, especially in densely populated cities and countries, i.e. food, housing, jobs, transportation and education. It is just reality. There isn't such a heavy emphasis in the West largely because they have conquered and taken over so much of the New World in the past 200 years, thus were able to spread out and have more resources available per person. Prior to the pandemic, economic downturn and stagflation; in those New World countries, even a working-class person can get a detached home in some remote town to raise a large family easily.

In most cases, women take care of their children more than the father. Women in Europe earn less than men for the same position and experience in the job. So, most women expect for a guy to be paid more than them therefore to take care of them(financially) and their children. Would there be equality, there would be no need for a woman to expect more of a guy in terms of money.
Difference in men and women's thinking is women think long term. By nature she wants a strong provider for her youngs to ensure their survival and her future stability. Plus Asian countries have too many ridiculous social pressure and unrealistic demands on a woman's role. She is expected to work inside and outside of the home like super woman while raising his kids and taking care of him and his parents. That's why a lot of young women in the newer generation are turning away from it. Either make demands of their own or walk the other way.
The issue in China is numbers, because the male-female ratio in China is dramatically in women's favor. When you live in a country where some families were kidnapping female children and raising them to be the wife of their son you can see that there is a numbers problem. Too many female children were aborted in favor of male children and now there is a numbers problem. It's not as bad as it was 10 years ago but it's still pretty bad. Foreign Asian women are not really that interested in moving to a communist country to live so they have a hard time importing Asian brides, and their families are not really welcoming to non-Asian women. China can be a bit racist. Also, Chinese women work and many can support themselves well enough to not be forced into early marriages by their parents. So Chinese men either make the mark to be considered marriageable, get lucky and find true love or go without.

In all honesty, it's kind of a give and take for most traditional housewife types.
She'll do all the housework, cooking, cleaning, looking after the baby, etc. While the husband works and supports the family financially.
That's, in a traditional sense, a fair exchange. Husband comes home to a clean house, freshly cooked food on the table, and a loving family. Wife doesn't have to bear the burden of working to support the family financially. Everyone is doing their part, everyone gets benefits in the agreement. Win-win.

We could go on and on about ideals and what the world should be, but the truth is that men look for youth (in their partners) and women look for resources (in their partners). This is related to reproductive success (where men need healthy offspring and women need safety during the lengthy period of gestation and child-raising). We could argue all day that it shouldn't necessarily be true any more as a lot of folks don't even want kids these days, but it's a subconscious biological imperative.
That being said, due to the one-child policy in China, the number of men vastly outstrip the number of women, so yes, the women can afford to be choosy and picky (more so than women in other countries). There are a lot of men competing for a smaller pool of women. There's even a phenomenon called bare branches (Guang Gun/ 光棍) to describe all the "leftover men".
Well, i think it's about time that we start growing out of these youth and resource stuff bcoz more women r joining in the workforce, so they naturally will hav enough resources to sustain themselves and men too r getting more focused on a successful life than marrying a young and pretty woman, isn't it?

Equality and equity are two different concepts. Equality is human rights upheld: access to health, education, voting, legal representation etc.
The main reason a woman prefers a spouse with a higher income than hers, is long term security for her children.
The equity between genders is still wide. Women are expected to hold full time employment AND do at least 80% of household duties and child rearing. Women bear the majority of the household burden.
Only 50 years ago, a man was the sole provider of his family. Now both genders provide income.
Women earn less money per dollar for the same role and responsibility as a male colleague. In Australia, a female will earn 83 cents of every dollar her male colleague earns, despite having identical qualifications, experience and duties. Therefore a woman's superannuation is also much lower than a male at retirement.
More women and children are affected by domestic violence and homelessness following a divorce or spousal death.

One of my nieces is finishing up medical school at an Ivy and also has a Phd. She married a guy from China several years ago. He is still working on his Phd but his parents are wealthy. They live modestly but should do really well when they are both working full-time. My wife has never worked outside the home after we were married and that was her expectation. I think that China has a relative shortage of women because of the one-child policy in the past so you have the situation of supply and demand. If you want more from a spouse than is the norm, then you have to bring more to the table in other areas.

I am not sure but I don't think the pressure comes from the women themselves but their families. I think in all cultures there is the want to make sure their daughters are taken care of but some demands are too high and almost unreasonable.

But a typical average woman will seek an above average man (who will be statistically a top 1% man). My ex was constantly b1tching about me not making enough money while my annual comp is over RMB4m.
