This is somehow a masterpiece. It's an important song already but Disturbed strips out the harmony, slows down the tempo, and replaces the folk with metal and orchestra, the vocal fry, the entire progression toward crescendo, none of it seems like it should work but dang does it ever. Disturbed makes it their own while respecting the song. Draiman's voice is just incredible.

when you said what kind of magic is this. That is how I feel, This has brought out feelings in me I never felt before. I am obsessed with this song and his voice. I have listened to this so many times. And when I go to bed I fall a sleep hearing him singing. I am 64 and I havn't slept so good in my life.

When Paul Simon heard this he conceded that this song now belongs to David Draiman. This is the only cover that he has ever even acknowledged.

I’m old enough to remember the original version by Simon and Garfunkel but, David and Disturbed’s version just takes your breath away. You hear the words and understand them more than the original . My fav by far ❤😊

David Draiman's voice has always held that power/force. I think as pop and rap have dominated main stream music, Metal has been pushed back out of the spotlight and Voices like Draiman's have been forgotten. This song showcases his vocal power, range and delivery.

Paul Simon is a genius!!! This was written over 50 years ago, and when presented to us back then, it was as a folk song the way Simon and Garfunkle sang it. We did not have any real conception of what the soft , pretty sounding words softly sung with an acoustic guitar meant! It took 50 years, and another musical genius, David Draimen, to bring the words to life. Paul Simon is still a genius for even putting the words on paper.

Same here. I never cared for S&G's folk style, so I also never listened to the words. Kudos to S&G for the lyrics, prophetic and written nearly 60 years ago. But for me, I never would have LISTENED to it without this version. And now I'm also a little obsessed with David Draiman. Lol. His voice is incomparable. Trained as a cantor in the Jewish church, there's nothing he can't sing, he just chose the rock/metal path. Depending on what you want to listen to, some of their more recent stuff has a little more of this flavor, Hold Onto Memories, If Ever I Lose My Faith In You, A Reason To Fight ... those are all a little more mainstream, but with their own twist. Their earlier stuff that didn't draw you in might now ... Down With The Sickness, Stricken ... I mean, it depends on what you're looking for. They've been going strong for 20+ years and their music has evolved along with their lives. What hasn't changed is the incredible underlying talent and the sheer musicianship of this band and lead singer. ❤

I am with you on hearing Simon & Garfunkel sing this song all of my life, yet never really paid attention to the words. Hearing Disturbed cover it was an eye or ear opener. I got goosebumps and tears. I do every time I listen to it. The pace and tone along with the visuals... They did a phenomenal rendition of this timeless classic.

David Draiman of Disturbed is simply amazing. Paul Simon posted their live version on his own page, saying the song was now theirs. What a tribute. The live version on Conan is wonderful, especially considering that he was quite ill with the flu at the time. He still came on and blew the audience away.

  • @rollotomassi6232

Paul Simon took six months to write the lyrics, which are about man's lack of communication with his fellow man. The author sees the extent of communication as it is, on only its most superficial and "commercial" level (of which the "neon sign" is representative). There is no serious understanding because there is no serious communication - "people talking without speaking - hearing without listening". No one dares take the risk of reaching out ("take my arms that I might reach you") to disturb the sound of silence. The poet's (character in the song) attempts are equally futile (" . . . but my words like silent raindrops fell within the wells of silence"). The warning comes as how people worship technology as a religion “people bowed and prayed to the neon god they made” (In the 60’s that was TV, today how many people do you see bow to their cell phones?) The ending is an enigma. The words tell us that when meaningful communication fails, the only sound is silence, that graffiti on the subway walls and tenement halls holds truer meaning than the psychobabble on TV or the people yelling at each other in the streets. This song, written 50+ years ago, is more poignant than ever in today’s world.

This cover makes you want to listen, like hey what is this. It's perfection, to me anyway. This song is what introduced me to David and Disturbed. David can sing and he has emotion toward the problems we face, he lets us know he feels the pain also. Disturbed is now one great band to me. David is one great singer. Thank you Disturbed

When Simon and Garfunkel sang this back in the 60s it was such a lighthearted warning that like you I never paid attention to the lyrics. It was like oh hey guys our tvs and radios are kinda stopping us from communicating with our family, friends, neighbors. Now here we are all these years later with soooo much technology at our fingertips 24 hours a day that you cant talk at all to people without our eyes being diverted to their cell phones, game systems ect. So David sings this in all out rage because no one listened to the warning so here we are. Not only are we divided by all this technology but we are also so divided by our politics, religion, race and on and on. I love the ending where the folks with the instruments are separate from the folks with music, words, voices. Only when we as a society can cross that divide and come together as one people and find a way to communicate with one another again, will this end this terrible state that we all find ourselves in.

Simon and Garfunkels song was a warning of what was to come. Transistor radios, tv, cell phones were coming to their own. If people didn't listen the fe family unit would be destroyed. David done this cover as the continuance of Simon and Garfunkels song , yes there was anger. As David showed. It will be interesting to have it contined. Watch his live version with Conan O'Brian show.

Taking the sound of the instruments across the divide to meet with the people who wrote the music on the other side. Paul Simon said that he wrote this song as a warning and that Disturbed’s version was the anger that people didn’t listen. Paul Simon told David that this was his favorite cover of that song, and that it belong to Disturbed now.

Love this song. The S&G version of the song has such a soft, lilting tone to it that it detracts from the weight of the lyrics for me. The arrangement by Disturbed elevates the original work while still deeply respecting it, with not only the vocals, but the instruments slowly building and growing in power until the final verse is almost overwhelming in the power, reaching a crescendo just in time to leave you feeling both relieved and sad that it has finished.

I grew up listening to Simon and Garfunkel. I loved this song then and even more now with the Disturbed's version. You need to go back and see the whole video without interruption. Then maybe you will understand it. The instruments are gathered on one side of the river and the music is written by the people on the other side (No, they are NOT ghosts). The boat at the end is NOT the ferryman. It's the musicians taking the instruments to the people.

Pardon my French, but damn it, sir! Why'd you have to react to this song??
This brings me to tears every. single. time! It didn't fail to do it when I watched this. How this song stirs something in my soul, you feel the despair and anguish in his voice. This is a _magnificent_ cover.
One should never underestimate rock/metal singers. A lot are classical trained and sounds a hell of a lot better than some mainstream artists. Marko Hietala (formerly) of NightWish comes to mind. In fact, I suggest you check out their mellow ballads like "While Your Lips Are Still Red" and "The Islander".
And if you want a good sample of his vocal power (and their old lead vocalist, Tarja Turunen), watch their End of an Era concert where they covered "Phantom of the Opera", because that version was, imho, what the original musical would have wished it was.

Only found this a couple of months ago myself and thought it was really good. Please could you consider reacting to Harry Mack on Omegle, it's a rabbit hole in it's self 👊

I've watched dozens of reactions to this extraordinary cover. There are frequently idiots who complain about interruptions. If they want the song without, it's available elsewhere. This is a reaction and when you feel like you have to react, you react. You can always argue about precisely where it is appropriate, but it's a bloody REACTION. Great effort my man.
