Nothing like waking up early with a cup of coffee and watching some classic games, kinda reminds me of when I was a kid waking up early on the weekend before anyone else and firing up the old Super Nintendo and start playing away. When times we’re simpler
This video is fantastic, what an amazing and thorough walkthrough! This has been one of my favorite games and soundtracks since I was 5 years old and have played it quite a bit over the past 30+ years. Thank you for explaining how to get the maidens at the end of each level, I get so mad every time I get a shadow and now I finally understand! -Cast
Hands down one of the finest soundtracks on the NES. I remember one NES buyer's guide that rated every aspect of a game on a 1 to 10 scale (graphics, music, gameplay, etc) and Dragon Spirit was one of the few games to rate a 10 out of 10 soundtrack.
It's because the original arcade game had a sick soundtrack to begin with, and the NES port team did a good job making it sound great on the NES hardware despite the limits. Some tracks are completely "different" despite being the same basic tune as they found ways to make it sound particularly good NES style. I actually like some tracks better on this game vs the original.
You started posting videos to this channel on almost the same month when I first moved into my new house, it's been an unusual (and cool) way for me to keep track of time passing... Normally, I have real difficulty keeping track of events but with your memorable weekly submissions, it's been a great way for me to compensate. A bit unintentional, but you have my gratitude all the same.
This is by far one of my favorite schmups for the NES. You get to fly around as a dragon and blast things with fire breath! And there are even different dragon types, too.
You should ABSOLUTELY do the Capcom classic: Legendary Wings. I doubt you'll tell me anything I don't already know about playing that game. Unlike this game, where I watched this vid just to learn all the stuff I couldn't figure out. Because I got this game years after I had time to figure it all out for myself. Thank you! But really, Legendary Wings is an A+ game imo. Not too long but great replay value. Love your channel. Keep on ROCKIN'!!!
I remember this game from back in the NES era. I rented it all the time, and only recently found it at a gaming store. Good time! Thanks for the video!
Man what an awesome channel. I grew up in the age of the Snes first so many aspects of NES don't appeal to me, but it's really nice to watch a super chill flawless walk-through lol. Feels satisfying.
As far as I am concerned? This is the best shooter on the NES. The perfect combination of story and gameplay and balanced difficulty. I asked for one thing when I was 6 and got this instead. I'm so grateful. Why does this game not get any attention? I don't get it!
I love how the bad ending low-key implies you're a big baby who needed to be read a beddie-bye stowy before going to bed. Even when they were being nice, old school Nintendo hard games knew how to rub salt in the wound.
one of my most favorite games I had as a kid growing up. My mom still has an illustrated "book" I wrote for school about Dragon Spirit. The music was probably the most memorable part for me.
Its incredible how consistent YCBVG is with its content. Not to how many games on this channel have an extreme difficulty curve. I am very cursious if we will ever transition into the Playstation/GameCube/Xbox/Dreamcast Generation? Not that there isn't a ton Retro content from this Generation left to cover.
@alexkeeton5624 I would place ps1,saturn and dreamcas as retro. I would be all for a full video on Tales of destiny or castlevania symphony of the night.
I owned Dragon Spirit for the Turbo Grafx 16 I didn’t know the NES had a version! Glad I found this channel recently it is already one of my favorites!
I remember sitting in Walmart wanting a new game. I begged for the cheapest game and promised to clean my room before playing it. My parents caved and Dragon Spirit was mine. It turned out to be one of my dad's favorite games. Best deal he ever made. We did beat it when I was a kid. Recently, I pulled it back out and had a perfect game (didn't get hit).
This was the first game I ever remember seeing a commercial for, and might also be the first game I ever beat... as the gold dragon, but still. I've played through this a ton of times, but this is the first I've ever seen the exclamation point power-up; you always managed to teach me something new!
I know you might not see this now but you are the only thing to make traffic barrable, I just have to open the app, pull up the playlist and just hit somewhere all your walkthroughs are gems
In Area 7 you can shoot those 2. Look at my gameplay of the game. And you can use the upgrade with the 2 little dragons by your side too. They don't have a hit box so no damage for them.
I loved this game as a kid it's nice to see it getting this kind of attention. I beat it with the gold dragon a lot and while I got close I could never beat it with the blue dragon.
The same vibes in the Amiga classic Apidya. The hero in that one transforms into a hornet for a scrolling shmup. And that box cover features him as a sword weilding warrior set on an action/adventure type quest.
I got this game back in 1989 when it came out. I got it for a Christmas Present back then. I was only in 7th Grade in Middle School at the time. (This game was one of the few Christmas Presents that I found hidden away in my parent's bedroom before Christmas. The game was sitting right there on a top shelf in a closet for anyone to see. I knew what I was going to get for that Christmas about a month or 2 before December 25th). Anyways, I have a lot of great memories with this game. I can not even tell you how much 80's Metal I listened to when I was playing this game in the late 80's on the NES? I had a stereo system right beside the TV. So when playing this game, I would put on Iron Maiden, early Def Leppard, or some other Metal band. It added to the intensity of the gameplay. This game is really going to test your dodging skills. A lot of enemy fire is going to come at you fast. It is not quite a bullet hell game, but at times it is not far from it. Challenging but fair. A lot will be coming at you, especially on the 4th level / The Graveyard around at the end before you get to the skeleton dragon boss. Although in this game, there are about 3 or 4 places in this game that are very hard if you do not know what to do. Reminds me of the later vertical levels in Lifeforce. Especially that 8th level of flying in the dark. The entire screen goes dark and you can not see anything in front of you at all. It is too easy to ram into something. The 6th level has an ice field that will speed up when you first enter it. You will be going very fast and you have to burn any and all ice crystals in your way. If not, it is a quick game over. The 5th Level / The Spider Cave has a few very tight passageways to barely move in. Too easy to hit the sides of the sharp rocks. Another very quick game over. The 3rd level / The Jungle has about 10 thorn bushes that will come after you and chase you all over the entire screen if you do not destroy them as soon as they show up. Make sure to always have at least the white dragon or the green dragon. Best weapons in the game. Also be sure to have at least 2 or 3 heads when flying around as well. A lot of enemies will come at you fast. Without good flames, you are a sitting duck. There are a lot of weapon powerups. They come constantly throughout the whole game. The only problem with this game is that there is little or no health items. If you get hit about 3 times it is a fast game over. Each level stage does not renew your health. You go into each stage with the same health that you had from the previous stage. Basically if it moves on the screen, burn it with fire. Some people have said over the years that this game is Gun-Nac with dragons. Gun-Nac put to Dungeons & Dragons. I can somewhat see that. I played this game a lot in the late 80's on NES. Usually on The Gold Dragon mode / the easy mode with limited levels. The Blue Dragon mode / the full game was much harder. Now these days, this same NES game is on Nintendo Switch in the Namco Museum vol. 1 game.
I had NO idea this was available on the Switch - THANK YOU for this! I bought the original arcade version of it, which I never played before, but I wanted to play this version and I've been using an emulator. The Switch port is smooth as butter in comparison, and that makes it a bit easier to play.
Oh awesome! I'm awake for the release time for once! :D And it's a game I don't know and have never heard of. Funky! Time for a midnight snack and a new UCBVG video! XD

This was one of the only NES games me and my sister could beat when we were kids. The others were double dragon 2 and turtles 2 the arcade. I got to the final stage in the original Mario bros but, never beat it. It's kind of a tragic story why I didn't beat mario
At 54:00, it is the framerate that goes down when there are more enemies on screen, thats why it might look like the game speeds up with less heads but actually the game has the same speed, the problem is the enemy count on screen. The NES usually cant handle too much enemies on screen, so a game can slow down and u get flicker aswell. It looks like the boss moves slowly but as u can see when there is only one head left, the game´s frame rate goes back to normal.
Wow, what an unexpected selection! I rather enjoy the deep dives for the more obscure games, and Dragon Spirit's a unique one. It's not the only dragon-based shooter on the NES: AD&D Dragonstrike has a similar premise, though it's a bit less linear (and not quite as good, if you ask me).
There should be a better way to surface older content on this channel. I just got to wondering if you would do Guardian Legend, and of course you already have! You might want to consider ZANAC, as it's a predecessor to Guardian Legend that's very challenging and fast.
I bought this game thinking it was going to be like dragon warriors...I was wrong, but oh was so happy. Beat this on both modes, but can't beat arcade version. Dang you namco museum...I will beat you and sabre.
Last boss looks like a Simon Says, which is really just a floating throne for Simon, the last boss of Dragon Spirit The New Legend. He's mad because Simon didn't say!
I know you mainly do NES stuff, but I’d love to see you do Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals For me, it’s one of the greatest games of that generation. I put it on the same shelf with Terranigma for ‘Amazing Games Few Have Played’

this soundtrack was crazy good. the jungle theme is one of my alltime fav video game musics

The NES version is the best version. It’s hands down one of the top 10 games of all time. The OST alone is among top 5.
Nice! Definitely one of the hardest shooters (for me, at least) that I remember playing as a kid, especially in the arcade.
The NES version is tricky, but the arcade version is crazy-difficult.
This is my favorite NES games ever! I liked it better than SMB 3!

Underrated soundtrack
Wow, I'm on time for this :)
There should be a better way to surface older content on this channel. I just got to wondering if you would do Guardian Legend, and of course you already have! You might want to consider ZANAC, as it's a predecessor to Guardian Legend that's very challenging and fast.
Holy crap haven't seen this game in years
Dragons and dinosaurs?!?
Queue meme of little kid screaming "F**K YEAAAAH!"
Of of my favorite games as a kid. Thanks for the member berries.
I wonder if you'll ever do Silver Surfer. Is that game even beatable without cheat codes? LOL
man you make it look so easy :D
This was my first game along with bionic commando
I bought this game thinking it was going to be like dragon warriors...I was wrong, but oh was so happy. Beat this on both modes, but can't beat arcade version. Dang you namco museum...I will beat you and sabre.
Last boss looks like a Simon Says, which is really just a floating throne for Simon, the last boss of Dragon Spirit The New Legend. He's mad because Simon didn't say!
I know you mainly do NES stuff, but I’d love to see you do Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals
For me, it’s one of the greatest games of that generation. I put it on the same shelf with Terranigma for ‘Amazing Games Few Have Played’
