I once met a famous old Chinese medicine doctor. He's not only in his 90s but also very healthy. So, people asked him what is your secret for health. He said: there is no secret. If you want to know what I eat, I only eat white rice, white noodle, Bok Choy, and sweet potato.

I tried to convince a friend in Cambodia to switch to brown rice, wow, she looked at me like I had just suggested eating dirt. When I am in Asia, I just eat white rice and veggies (a modified version of the local diet without the meat/fat) at home it's back to brown rice/potatoes and veggies/beans, either way I have lost about 40 pld, not much left to lose, and I eat as much as I want. the trick for me was losing the fat in a vegan diet, as soon as I dropped the fats I dropped the weight...

My grandmother was a Type 2 brittle diabetic. She spent most of her life gaining tons of weight and eating meat and bowls of ice cream. She grew up in the Great Depression, no rich foods then, and when it was over, she gorged. She asked me what to do. I got her on rice of all kinds, NO meat, NO dairy, very little oil if any, oat meal for breakfast, vegetables and fruit WITHOUT sugar, along with cinnamon in her coffee. It helped her a lot. She lived a lot longer and her blood sugars stabilized. She had a lot less "HIGH" readings on her test meter and less fainting spells from being LOW. In short, starch gave her a better life!

I mean in parts of the place where I come from (Bhutan) people eat always rice-rice in breakfast, lunch and dinner (with curries of course). If there is no rice, it sure looks weird and unusual. People used to eat maize, wheat, millet instead of rice if they did not have wealth in the olden days, but they have now cash to buy white rice everytime. Bottomline-can't live without rice! :D

@@Primetime_dads I had meant curry as in cooked vegetables - I guess the closest familiarity in Western audience would be stir fries. But they would be just any vegetables or combination of vegetables cooked with a few spices, herbs, oil and salt. This could be with or without soup or gravy in it. Somehow I have come to know that when someone mentions curry, to a Western mind, it would usually mean cooked vegetables in a watery soup or gravy base. This as I mentioned earlier isn't the case with what I described as 'curry'. Perhaps I have termed the cooked item incorrectly or in a wrong way.

The white rice that makes me fat is Japanese rice. It is different and starchier. White bread, japanese noodles, italian white pasta makes me fat. Interestingly chinese noodles doesn't make me fat. I guess each one of us reacts differently to foods we consume.

When you switch to brown rice, do it slowly because it is high in fiber. Try 1/8 of a cup (of uncooked) and cook it with white rice, then slowly switch over to brown rice. The fiber helps you feel full longer and slows down the absorption of the starches so the glycemic load is much lower. I read that brown rice can lower the risk of type II diabetes by 12% or more.

Brown rice is a lot more filling to me, but since I've been McDougalling I honestly can't finish a meal because everything I eat is so hearty. My husband is Filipino so it's hard to get him to eat brown rice. He still eats meat so I usually just cook whatever I'm eating, plus I make a meat portion on the side, so it's easier just to have white rice. Good to know that it doesn't make a huge difference.
I'm almost ready to stop food journalling and just trust that it's almost impossible to overeat while McDougalling.

I'm so glad I can eat white rice. I really don't like the taste of brown rice. I've seasoned the heck out of it and the next day you'd never know I'd given it any spices at all! It's the flavor black hole of rice! I just read "The Starch Solution" today and am curious to give it a try. It's very hard for me to think I can eat pasta and potatoes without gaining weight but I love pasta so I'm willing to give it a shot. I guess I'm fortunate that I've been making a very slow transition to vegan over the past year. (Going kicking and screaming but still inch by inch getting there) So I'm going to do a 7 day challenge and see how it goes!

    • @suicune2001
      @suicune2001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

So I've been on it for one day. I've only eaten tacos since I wanted to eat foods gentle on my stomach. I ate VERY VERY fatty foods last week: Coconut milk, chia seeds, flax seeds, walnuts, cashews, and full fat greek yogurt. By Friday from eating all that, I started throwing up. I couldn't even keep down water. I was going to wait until Monday to do the McDougal diet but since I felt so sick, I made the switch the next day. I've only been eating white rice, black beans, corn tortillas (since wheat has oil), a little tomato, spinach, corn, and sala. All fat and oil free. I tried not to limit myself but I didn't want to completely gorge myself either.
In one day, I've lost a pound and a half. That could be a fluke, of course, but I'm honestly SHOCKED about that. Beans made me gain weight last year when I added them to my diet, but I was also eating a lot of fat then. I'm curious to see how the rest of the week will go.

McDougall's key words for those who do not know him - McDougall "WANTS TO PICK HIS BATTLES CAREFULLY" in order to save the most people - Note - He Says BROWN IS BETTER - it is so difficult for most people to give up the dairy, meat and processed crap he does not want to tell them to give up white rice at the same time - those who understand his message will also eventually realize brown is better - I have organic brown rice at home and occassionally have white at a reastaurant because restaurants make dry crappy brown usually

I am a Filipino and I eat rice 3 times a day. One thing I notice is that RICE is great as long as you combine it with fruits and vegetables. The problem is the meat diet combined with lots of rice. Lots of diabetics here in our country are rice eaters but at the same time meat-eaters. It has been in our culture since we are an archipelagic country where there is an abundance of fish, hogs (pork), beef or cows, goat recipes, etc! We even eat exotic foods made from snakes and reptiles such as frogs, etc. Even dogs are butchered here! Whew! Meat is truly an enemy of human health since we arent designed to eat meat ( th-cam.com/video/sXj76A9hI-o/w-d-xo.html
). For so many years of being meat eaters, chronic illnesses are rampant here. My dad died from aneurysm, my uncles died from hear attack, etc. I did have symptoms of a nasal tumor (nasopharyngeal mass) and thank God when I decided to stop eating meat but continue my rice, veges and fruits, all symptoms are slowly fading away. It's the MEAT, it's the DAIRY and EGGS are poisoning us. If you have chronic symptoms, stop eating those foods and thank me later!!

In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is the main food used to increase nutrient absorption (as it is easy for the body to assimilate). It's the most common food TCM recommends for treating the sick, in the form of soup or congee (traditional Asian porridge). After the person begins to recover, more nutrient dense foods such as beans, mushrooms, seaweed, etc. may be added to the congee. It's also recommended that even after full recovery, people continue eating this to sustain their health.

My vet always tells me to feed my dog white rice and boiled chicken after he has vomited. I once said “I only have brown rice.” Her response???? “Go buy white rice. It is easier on the stomach. Don’t feed your dog brown rice on the bland diet.” So I always have white rice in my house for feeding my dog a bland diet after he gets sick. White rice is a perfectly harmless food for dogs AND people. I actually eat more white rice than brown rice now; I used to only eat brown or wild rice.

Far eastern Asians had their rice custom-milled to lesser or greater retention of the outer coating of the grain. Nothing wrong with white rice. It is the total diet you have to pay attention to. Some folks can't even digest brown rice (as we know it here) because of serious intestinal/digestive issues.

If you eat WFPB you already get more than enough fiber, protein, vitamins and minerals. White rice is then perfect to fill in energy. Besides, white rice has arginine to lysine ratio of 2:1 which offsets high lysine content of some other foods.

Rice is full of resistant starch, whether it’s brown rice or white rice. If you cool your rice after cooking it and then heat it again it increases the levels of resistant starch.
Resistant starch is just as important for your gut bacteria as fiber is.

I'm pre-diabetic Type II trying to lose weight via the potato, rice, vegetables diet of Dr. M. I've been vegetarian for 28 yrs but need to lose 100lbs. I lost 10 lbs since 7-23-18 and it is now 9-12-18. I read that athletes eat white rice before working out going for the high glycemic value of it for quick fuel pre/post workout. How does it according to Dr. M lower your glycemic index? I've been eating white rice and wondering if my weight loss is a healthy weight loss and concerned about my blood sugar levels. I eat raw vegetables via my blender, so it's probably fine nutrition wise and rice/potatoes satisfy my hunger. I read Brown rice has phytic acid and allergy issues and binds with essential minerals and also digestive issues too I guess, so white rice is the rare time a processed food is good. Does anyone know how it lowers the glycemic index where I read the opposite from another Dr and supported by the fact a lot of athletes eat white rice.

    1. Rinse 1-2 cups rice in a strainer under cold running water for 30 seconds. Bring 12 cups water to a boil in a large pot with a tight-fitting lid over high heat. Add the rice, stir it once, and boil, uncovered, for 30 minutes. Pour the rice into a strainer over the sink. 2. Let the rice drain for 10 seconds, then return it to the pot, off the heat. Cover the pot and set it aside to allow the rice to steam for 10 minutes. Uncover the rice, fluff with a fork, and season with salt.
