You missed a big one: Walter Jr. is really Ted Beneke's son. It's elementary, just do a punnett square. Walter Sr. and Skylar both have blue eyes. Walter Jr. has brown eyes. Prior to Skylar's affair, it seems clear to me that a part of the subtext of their relationship is that they had a romantic attraction to each other. Falling pregnant with Walter Jr., and wanting to avoid suspicion that would damage his marriage, or who-knows-what, could have been her real reason for quitting working back in the day. Cuckoldry is just another form of control. Right up her alley.

The funniest thing is that Vince G and Anna Gunn both are confused why her character is hated. How can they be so brilliant in their craft, and yet so stupid at the same time?
They both think she exudes the “strong, independent female” and is therefore, has immunity from criticism. In reality, they wrote a very realistic modern woman - a selfish, controlling, emasculating, lying, man-hating witch with no accountability.
And then there was her sister - flawed, yes. But a woman who encouraged her man to be a man and supported his dreams. Compare that to Skylar and the way she treated Walt (even before the diagnosis)

    • @ExtraCheeseProject

Agreed, I love Hank and Marie, if Skyler would have listened to them then Walt wouldn't have gotten treatment and they'd all have been better off 😭 Also somehow the most ruthless part of your comment is that you called her 'Skylar' 😅

In addition to the points made above, Walt started working at the car wash four years before the series starts, and Skyler quit Bennecke four years before the series. Walt, in addition to his teaching job, had to take on a second, often demeaning job at the car wash to make up for Skyler quitting. As noted in the video, she clearly lied to Walt about the fumes (and this speaks to the level of control she exerts in the relationship that her chemist husband, with an impressive knowledge of engineering to boot, who could explode any claims about the health risks of her working environment, never followed up or checked out her story), but Marie believes Skyler had to leave because of Ted sexually harassing her. Yet her behavior and demeanor around Ted are not someone who is so desperate for income that she is cautiously giving her harasser a second chance. Coupled with the general knowledge in which her sexy song for Ted's birthday is recalled, it's pretty clear she went too far in her flirtation, created expectations in Ted, or made their working together extremely uncomfortable, so she quit, lied to her sister & husband, and allowed him to take on the additional work to provide for their family, while she did absolutely nothing to secure a replacement job.
This woman's idea of celebrating her husband's 50th birthday is to give him food he does not like, but in the shape of the numerals of his age, to demand that he leave work promptly on time without telling him that he has other plans, have him drive their son to school, after he does his two jobs, greet him on his arrival at a surprise birthday party with a not-at-all discreet rebuke for his tardiness, all the while he is miserable and the "guest" at his party sucks up all the energy in the room with his work bragging, and TV appearance (The principal of Walt's school appears to be the only person there who is not primarily known to the couple through Skyler. Why is Steve Gomez even at the party? What sort of relationship has he with Walt?). Walt's cough gets no real attention from her other than nagging to take herbal supplements. And then, at the end of the day, while she is preoccupied with her E-bay activities that she uses to excuse her lack of a job, she gives a fraction of her attention to a sexual encounter that is more awkward and humiliating than pleasurable for him, and presents her minimal level of effort, and refusal to engage in more intimate activity, as making it all about him.
Skyler's behavior throughout the first two seasons, when she does not yet know about his illegal activities is very controlling and suspicious. The audience is inclined to give her slack, because they know what Walt is doing, but she has no way of knowing this. One might contend her knowledge of, and familiarity with Walt tells her he is up to no good, but where is that intuition at discerning how unhappy he is with their "sex" or his surprise party? Why do we see her do nothing to make him happy that does not involve her being the center of attention? No, what we see is a controlling partner becoming angry at their spouse acting on their own and thinking for themselves. She checks up on Walt's phone calls, she finds Jesse, and when Walt says he tried marijuana (which is barely even a vice), she gets all moralistic on him, and when he snaps back at her, she tracks down Jesse to intimidate him into refusing to sell to Walt, citing her DEA agent brother-in-law. Notice how she behaves in THAT encounter: she enters through the gate, despite Jesse telling her not to, she approaches him, despite him telling her to leave, and then passive-aggressively acts as if he is threatening her.
Skyler's approach to Walt's pot habit is not normal, sensible or sane, it is controlling and ego-driven. Like her husband, she is compelled to beat people in confrontations. This same trait plays out in her dealings with Walt when she learns of his drug dealing. First, she demands that HE be the one to leave. As the arrival of the Salamanca brothers will later show the viewer, the danger she rightly fears coming down on Walt is not going to care about his marital status. The smart, and moral, thing to do in her shoes is to take the kids away from Walt and the house, and TELL HANK. Yes, there could be repercussions for the family of a drug dealer, but if anyone could steer her through those scenarios, it would be Hank, and if anyone could get the DEA to go as easy on the Whites as their professional discretion allowed, it would be the sister of an agent's wife, with a handicapped teenage son and infant daughter. When Walt calls her bluff and moves back in, she refuses to tell the police why she wants him out. She refuses to allow her lawyer to pursue an emergency separation order and go to the police. She is too proud, too controlling, too attached to control of her family, to allow herself to appear as the helpless victim or the fool whose husband started a drug-cooking business for months behind her back.
Her ill-advised dealings with Walt continue, when, instead of maintaining separation for the safety of the family, following an actual murder attempt against a member of the family that Skyler professes to believe Walt is responsible for, she makes up a story about his gambling addiction so she can vent some of her anger at Walt to her sister and also force Walt to fund Hank's treatment. Why was a charity website just fine for Walt, despite his distaste for online begging, but not for Hank, now that she knows the money is illegal and ill-gotten? Because she wants to be the benefactor. She wants to be the one who takes the bills from Marie and tell her she's got this. She wants Marie to be in her debt forever, and to play the big shot in the family. She then trades access to their kids to get Walt's compliance with her scheme to launder money through the car wash.
Why the car wash? Because it was her idea, because she had to say something when she got the urge to take control of the discussion on the finances. Because she cannot bear to let Walt and Saul do all the planning and thinking, she has to be in charge. So she fixates on the car wash, and when Bogdan won't cooperate with her plans, and refuses to sell his livelihood that he built up from the ground, and has put his heart and soul into, for a price she has precisely calculated based on her estimation of the business he does, she then swindles him out of the original fair price, all of this to avoid backing down or admitting to Walt or Saul she is wrong or her plans won't work.
Skyler's controlling behavior also manifests with her alleged security precautions, such as rebuking Walt for buying the champagne, citing their alleged poverty (except they just bought a car wash for six figures... ) as incongruous with the expense. Except that is exactly the sort of thing people actually do, they splurge when they accomplish something, thinking that even if the account is a bit tight this month, their new business will make it up down the road. She tells Saul he can't be seen in the car wash because he is too recognizable, and here, gets a rare moment of comeuppance, when Saul points out that getting his car washed is a perfectly legitimate reason to be there, and then breaks down the complete disaster of her plan to evade IRS attention through Ted, by giving him money to pay off his debt.
By the end of the show, Skyler is miserable, broke, estranged from her son and sister, and far better off than she deserves.

Skylar had every intention to emasculate Walt. Walt went from a confident, leather jacket-sporting man, to a broken, sweater-wearing loser. In the scene where Walt, Skylar, Frank and Marie are having a heated discussion, Frank says, "Well, maybe he wants to die like a man, to which Skylar snaps back, "I don't want him to die at all!" She paid absolutely no consideration to Walt being a man. Hank understood that for a male, dying like a man is more important than living as an invalid. And I mean both forms of "invalid".
A man who is controlled by his wife does not have her respect. Her affair confirms that. Not giving her husband real bacon on his birthday, of all days, confirms that. Uninterested in sex with Walt confirms that. Permitting the denouncement of her husband's name in allowing her son to call himself "Flynn" and herself calling him Flynn, confirms the lack of reverence Skylar has for Walt.
Interesting how when the money started pouring in from Walt's meth enterprise, Skylar was on board regardless of the legality. My assumption would be whether the cartel or the cancer got Walt, either way, he was out of the picture and she would have millions as a nest egg. It was only when the wheels started to fall off that she withdrew. When they were financially struggling, she didn't have that financial cushion which is why at the time, she didn't want him to die at all.
Skylar is a very well-written character with nuance and complexity. I wonder whether actress Anna Gunn ever noticed the manipulative character of playing Skylar from day to day on set, or could only see it as an audience member once all of the fragments were put together.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  ปีที่แล้ว +11

I get why people come around on Skyler. The first watch through we are living vicariously through Walt and we tend to see his side on most things. We hate SKyler for always trying to jam Walt up. Once we've seen the complete series though, we understand how Walt destroyed his and his families lives. We understand that Walt ends up dead on the floor of some skinhead's meth lab. So on subsequent watch throughs, we're more sympathetic of Skyler. Her protestations and fears in regards to her, Walt and the family turn out to be true in the end. Both Walt and Skyler are really selfish, pretty fucked up people.

Making it clear that it would be a pity hire GURANTEED he'd reject it, and if she knew him like a wife should've she would've KNOWN THAT. If she was truly a knowing wife she'd have told them "do not bring up the cancer. Make it clear you want him for his MERIT. I watched BB from Week 1, by the end of Season 3 I was practically done with the show as I found every character distasteful.

I think Jesse was the only 'hero' even having so many faults 😬

Marriage seems to work out fine for some people, but whenever it goes badly it tends to go _incredibly_ badly, like _life-changing accident_ badly 😬

    Great vid .
Here's my personal fan theory on Walter left Grey-Matter Gretchen cheated on him with Elliott he found out somehow and left soon afterwards breaking up with her and taking the $ 5,000 buyout.

Agreed on her being a terrific actor! 👏 Gotta disagree on Skyler being the most powerful character though, because we have to remember the cameo from Star Trek: The Next Generation's *Q* of the *Q Continuum* (John Sherwood de Lancie, Jr. as Donald Margolis) 😬
