    You bring clarification to many things that have bothered me about this movie. The one that has stood out to me from the very beginning was that look the Lt. Colonel gave him.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      'A glance is worth 1,000 words' 😅 The Lt. Colonel seems conflicted on Miller: he respected him for completing the mission and at the same time he resented the losses that he presented, this explains him saying _"It was a tough assignment; that's why you got it."_ as in _"We knew you'd sacrifice your company to complete this vital mission."_ 😬 Thank you for the feedback! 😃

    Depends on the objectives - Mr English Teacher's battery of 88mm flak were much more heavily protected than Winters, so probably had a much better kill zone on the beaches and/or the exit valleys from the beaches. Losing that many men _might_ be justified if it meant closing a gap that German reinforcements could use to wedge apart two sections of the allied beachhead.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You're right, the two actions aren't directly comparable, but you have to admit that leading his command through the middle of a giant minefield probably wasn't the best tactical decision? 😅

    Wow -- this actually made me love "Saving Private Ryan" even more.
    One thing though:
    Their orders were to hold the bridge at all costs. To blow it as an absolute last resort. And the reason why is because we were trying to push further into Berlin with our armor divisions. Without bridges, that would have been much harder, of course.😂
    Great video.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      You're right, but I'd argue that Miller's orders were direct from the Chief of Staff of the US Army so the priority of his objective would justify skipping the _'try to hold the bridge'_ part of that mission, especially considering the risk to Ryan and the high likelihood of failure 😬 Having said that, the film established that Miller didn't care for this mission and wanted to do more conventional things instead - like charging that machine gun nest - so it follows that he wouldn't countermand defending the bridge for saving Ryan even if it was probably the right thing to do; the depth of this characterization shows how well the film is written 💯
      Thank you for the feedback! 😃

    The casualty rate on D-day wasn't Millers fault. They got dropped on a beach (single vector approach) in the middle of the minefield and had to charge fortified machine gun nests. Radically different circumstances than Winters assault at bettencourt.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      He was reporting on a mission against 88 mm artillery and Brécourt Manor was 105 mm artillery, exact quote from Saving Private Ryan: _"They just didn't want to give up those 88s."_

    Winters is nearly flawless which is unrealistic. Key to success was his single-mindedness to preparation. The whole series, Winters makes only one mistake, once. He gave the lieutenant who was shot on the train tracks by his own sentries in the neck, a little too much morphine.

    • @ExtraCheeseProject
      @ExtraCheeseProject  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed and even that mistake was more to show the medic's character 'yelling at the officers' 😅

      I didn't say that he was, I implied that while Band of Brothers portrays him as a terrible leader, he was still a step above Miller because he understood that medics needed to be kept safe.

      @@jerbs5346 My analysis is only based on the fictional character of Miller and the fictionalized characters (i.e. _based on_ real people) portrayed in Band of Brothers; I don't know the History enough to comment 😬

      @@ExtraCheeseProject Short answer yes. But don't think too much about the motivations or the tactics of the movie. It felt more like an essay on brotherhood formed in the military than anything else. Be warned that some of the combat scenes are a bit weird and the motivations of Brad Pitt's character are all over the place. Looking forward to your next video
