Football goals have barely changed in shape or size in over 150 years.
Crossbars, marked eight foot above ground, didn’t become mandatory until 1882.
They were controversial from the start. The first net was used at The Kennington Oval in 1891 as Blackburn Rovers beat Notts County [3-1] to win the FA Cup. And football has since seen goal frames evolve from wood to aluminium, but the dimensions between the sticks have never altered or even been significantly scrutinised.
This is surprising considering there was little or no science behind the goal’s size. In 1996, now disgraced ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter, called for their diameter to be widened by 50cm - or as he put it, “two footballs” - and for their height to be increased by 25cm. But uproar ensued and the plan was shelved prior to any serious debate.
But were bigger goals really such a bad idea?

Yes - some of the conversions from feet into metres are a little off (apologies - minor spreadsheet malfunction). To clarify, all measurements in feet and inches in the video are *accurate*, merely the bracketed conversions to metres are off. Here's a list of the accurate conversions:
    - Average height of a man in 1863: 5'5" (1.65m)
    - Average height of a man in 2019: 5'9" (1.75m)
    - Average height of a goalkeeper in 1863: 5'10" (1.78m)
    - Average height of a goalkeeper in 1980: 6' (1.83m)
    - Average height of a goalkeeper in 2019: 6'3" (1.91m)
    - Average height of Ligue 1 goalkeeper: 6'2" (1.88m)
    - Average height of Bundesliga goalkeeper: 6'3" (1.91m)
    - Average height of Serie A/La Liga goalkeeper: 6'1" (1.85m)
    - Asmir Begovic: 6'5" (1.96m)
    - Bobby Allain: 6' (1.83m)
    - Fernando Pacheco: 6' (1.83m)
    - Jan Oblak: 6'1" (1.85m)
    - Thibaut Courtois: 6'5" (1.96m)
    - Stuart Taylor: 6'5" (1.96m)
    - Wayne Hennessey: 6'5" (1.96m)
    - Average height of a goalkeeper at the Women's World Cup 2019: 5'7" (1.70m)
    - Karen Bardsley: 6' (1.83m)
Those appearing in the video not listed here are accurate.
    Thanks!

I don't think players are now more fit. They were incredibly fit, strong and tough back in the day. More so than now by far. I think a big part of it is that the rules have changed to where hard tackles, which would play a big part in both offense and defense are now heavily restricted. Also, changes in rules such as the offside rule change probably played a part too and many other rules.
The Pitches back then were also often in terrible condition. Like mud baths when it rained. The pitch condition could very well have an effect on scoring if it bounces, such as creating unpredictable tracjectories, making it harder to dive etc. Also the balls back then were larger and heavier I believe.
Overall I think the changes altogether, not one in particular, are probably what play a part. But I think it's wrong and disrespectful to suggest modern players are in better shape. Or more organised. It's just that the rules now present a different style of play.

    • @ajijijo4163
      @ajijijo4163 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

@@TheTaterTotP80 On average, they are definitely more fit now. Better healthcare, scientific conditioning, planned recovery, and better diets make sure of that. They may have been tougher in the past tho, since modern training is heavily focused on longevity and treats players delicately. Fitness is a prerequisite since total football, which favours high work rate players, became common.

  • @marklaw5116
    @marklaw5116 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

There’s one thing you’ve not considered regarding the saves-to-shots ratio and keeper height. Taller keepers are much more capable of catching the ball when it comes into the box in the air, such as corners, indirect free kicks, crosses, etc. Shorter keepers are more likely to punch the ball in these situations, or simply fail to reach it at all. This often leads to scrappy, scrambling attempts on goal from close range, that are commonly not that powerful or precise.
This would mean that shorter keepers would have a better saves-to-shots ratio because they invite more shots to be taken at them, particularly weak ones that they have a decent chance of saving. The taller keepers are better at preventing those situations to begin with, but it gives them fewer saves in the stats.

We need a video about women's goalkeeping. The same amount of goals being scored per game in both world cups is a cherry picked stat to try to convince us that the quality of goalkeeping at the elite level is the same in the men's and womens game. This is clearly not true from watching some of the goals that went in during the Women's World Cup and women's football in general. Should their goals be smaller? It feels like the channel won't address this because of the possible PR backlash when it is a clear and obvious issue that turns people away from women's football.

    • @soludsnak
      @soludsnak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I don't think they are trying to compare the mens and womens games like they are the same game in this episode, they're just arguing that the goalpost size isn't worth changing and is suitable. Women's shooting geometry, centers of gravity, pace, and strength are all different than the mens game, but it doesn't make the matches less enjoyable once you recognize that there are differences.

    Few things that should help
    1) Football should use rolling substitutions like they do in Basketball. Most players retire not because of skill but they can't carry on for 90 minutes. An older Steven Gerrard for 45 minutes is better than not having him because he can't go 90 minutes.
    2) Offside rule should only apply in the penalty box.
    3) Play extra time if the match is draw after 90 minutes. If a team wins in extra time match, they get 2 points rather than 3 and the loosing team gets their 1 point. Only a win in regular time should get you 3 points.

Using this, what would then be the "ideal" height of a goalkeeper?
I was always biased to taller keepers, because of those massive finger tip saves - this being the case, it would be interesting to know the goalkeepers which have the highest percentage of saves in those bottom corners.
If that's where the goals are mostly going in, then surely the best shot stoppers according to the data would be those who save there the most consistently.

Who decided that keeper height is the biggest factor in the number of goals scored?
    1. There are lots of missing factors here: for example, there are probably more goals in games between unevenly matched teams- have the standards of top-flight teams become more uniform over time? Or has the game just evolved in a way that favours the defending side? Have tactics changed?
    2. Does it matter WHY the number of goals is going down? I f we think that enlarging the goal would result in more goals and that more goals would improve the sport, THEN we should consider goal enlargement no matter what the reason is.

With two footballs at each side, the goal keeper will be two footballs away from the far corner. Making wild curls and tap ins easier, also making a player defending the far corner mandatory making more space in the box. Dont't feel any miracle will happen through this, but will make miracles more viable, making the game more exciting.

I commend you for raising this issue. As always, you address the topic intelligently and with the best intentions of football in mind. Whether your conclusions are correct, I can't say but allow me to add the following points to the discussion:
Regardless of height, modern goalkeepers are more athletic, agile, better trained and thus able to cover all areas of the goal quicker than keepers of the past could dream of.
Nowadays, there are many Banks' and Yashins'.
For the better part of sixty years tactical changes and innovations have been unable to move the needle on goals, or lack thereof. Putting hope in tactics to increase scoring is like Waiting for Godot. The Pyramid has been inverted long ago.
For decades, lack of scoring has been a serious concern to many of the sport's brightest minds and thinkers. Books written on the subject from the sixties to the nineties tirelessly exhorted coaches to adopt "a more attacking spirit". It hasn't worked.
Yes, football has always been low-scoring, but 2.5/game is pushing the envelope toward being "no-scoring". If the sport wants to maintain its popularity it will have to compete for younger fans with a vast array of leisure/entertainment alternatives, and in areas of the world where the sport isn't traditional and might have a tenuous foothold (read: huge global markets). I think this will become increasingly difficult.
No fan of Sepp Blatter I but must admit his proposal to enlarge the goals was sensible; raising a hue and cry and dismissing it out of hand was not. It's an issue that will not go away anytime soon.

An increase in the size of goals in men's soccer would essentially require a change in the size of goals in women's soccer. This would mean that men and women would be required to play on specifically designed fields with gender specific goals. This limits the opportunity for women to play, and makes co-ed leagues less viable for casual players. One of the reasons that the sport is so brilliant is because of its heritage and simplicity, lets not go and change something that isn't broken! Great work on the video as always!

I think goals should be bigger, not because of the size of goalies but because score lines should be higher. One of the biggest issues with football is how often the score does not reflect the game. How often have we all watch a 0-0 game and know one team deserved to win. Scoring in football is such rare thing (compared to other sports) and is the only decider for who the winner is, it struggles to accuratley reflect the ability of each team. Goals will be less special but at least the team that deserved to win more likely will.

the quality of players AND referee calls, ever-changing tactics, and VAR as of late, affects more than the size of goals.

A very important lesson can be learned here: size doesn't matter

Maybe goals should be bigger to encourage to strikers to shoot into the top corners. If 61% of goals are scored in the bottom part of the net, and smaller keepers are still considered better, I feel like giving strikers more reasons the belt the ball into the top corner wouldn't be a bad thing...

decline of goals per game correlates with many things, such as an increase in global temperature and decline in species diversity of moths in the british isles. what is RELEVANT is that football defence tactics have developed to a point where it is much harder to score goals

the stat where goals are scored is insane. you said on the bottom left or right is where shots are taken more often. during the community shield, salah would always shoot on the bottom right corner and bravo saved every single shot that salah hit on target. meaning, bravo is on the “shorter” side for keepers allowing him to save those shots more consistently. bravo tifo, bravo.

It is not so much a question of height of keepers, but an improvement in techniques.
And yes, football goals should get bigger.
That proposal of 50 cm more on the sides and 25 on top is excellent.

I never used to do even a third of the research for my college projects that you guys do for 10-minute odd video essays. Kudos Tifo.

It's pretty obvious that the implementation of VAR will increase the amount of goals scored across the board. Look at how many goals were scored in the recent World Cup.
