For poison I do a house rule where it's damage over time. While poisoned creatures take one dice worth of damage a turn based on the poison (i.e. low level poison is 1d4 per turn while poisoned). It gives it just a little extra punch without being an instant death sentence.

Loved the video! Ettercaps are fun monsters that don’t require much explanation, and they don’t come with the emotional guilt that comes with standard “murder hobo” play style. 🕸

The biggest takeaway from this episode is that Will and Brian are way beefier than we thought

I have an idea for poisons that does not remove the usage Constitution. I am thinking of a long running poison that gives you time to deal with it. Instead of lasting 1 minute, you would need to make a constitution saving throw after a minute.
On a failed save, the poison worsen in a way that makes sense, like maybe a -1 to all rolls, just like the penalty from being resurrected. Alternatively, the poison could cause temporary levels of exhaustion, which would make it feel like the poison is draining your vitality.
On a success, the poison could simply not worsen, or it could regress to an earlier stage if the DC is beat by a substantial amount.
The strength of the poison could be defined by multiple factors, two of which would be how long it takes to make a save and bad they get:
As for length, a fairly mild poison could require you to make a saving throw every long rest, where a particularly vicious poison might require you to make a saving throw every minute after being bitten.
As for how bad they get, a non deadly poison could worsen up to a maximum of 3 levels of exhaustion or up to a -3 modifier, and be beaten after three consecutive successful saves. A deadlier poison could be one that can't be beaten without magic and that would worsen until death, whether it be the 6th level of exhaustion or by any other means you can think of.
This approach to poison can make poisons much more interesting by allowing variety to your arsenal, whether it be a poison that slows a creature's movement speed until it worsens into full blow paralysis, or a neurotoxin that reduces mind faculties until it bring a character to a state similar to one caused by the feeble-mind spell, or a necrotic poison that could lead to the loss on the affected limb.
In any case, It would let you be creative, and it would make poisons more than few a highly resisted d6s of damage.

With the poison, how about the CON save represents you pushing past the poison effects to complete the combat without disadvantages, but on finishing the combat you’re hit with Exhaustion level(s) to represent the lasting effects of the poison?!

This whole episode just reminds me of the caverns where you need to get the obsidian orb in Baldurs Gate 3 Etercaps and phase spiders everywhere.

I guess I always just assumed that the ettercap was an Underdark monster because of all the spider things down there because of Lolth. This is definitely giving me Mirkwood vibes now, though.

I personally prefer to style Ettercaps after Spider Mites, an arachnid that has a lot of the traits of spider, including producing silk webs and being excellent climbers. Spider Mites are infamous as being very damaging pests and can absolutely wreck even the largest and hardiest plants if their population goes unchecked. It also helps to distinguish Ettercaps from other "spider monsters", as that is a very overpopulated niche.

I like to use the look of 5e ettercaps put I make them more colorful and make them more intelligent/ social with very rare occasions of ettercap towns. I also sometimes give them different ability’s like different types of arachnids like the phase spider or scorpions. In fact I had a n assassin phase ettercap that my party was trying to hunt down.

Fun fact, camel spiders aren't venomous nor do they harm humans or camels! They often get mistaken for chasing camels or people or in fact anything with a large enough shadow as to escape the heat of the sun, they dispatch prey with serrated jaws not venom

Maybe homebrew each poison so that the poisoned effect is a separate higher save DC that lasts for a random number of days? DC's & durations of 'poisoned' can vary based on potency.

I would give powerfull poisons the same effects of exhaustion. It can take days to get over and seriously hamper the character unless treated.

I have liked and commented! I continue to serve the creeping dungeoncast!
Ive been on a lord of the rings kick lately. So all I can think of when I heard ettercap is "you lazy attercop!" Although I've never read the hobbit.
Although I do greatly love the 1977 rankin/bass animated hobbit. You ever seen it will?

Camel Spiders eat camels? No. You must be thinking of bird spiders up in Queensland. They're the ones that eat the things in their name... Though they aren't so weirdly stealthy in their feeding. They just ambush the bird.

Yeah, so it’s pretty apparent that the Ettercap began as a demonic wolf spider... the lore implies an elongated face and haunched legs both of which can be synonymous with “equine”. In 2nd Edition they were depicted as more spider than demon, emphasizing their protruding fangs, and 3rd Edition focused in on their predatory/parasitic insectoid attributes which made them more leach-like... 4th Edition tried to bring their appearance more in line with their “equine” description by elongating their “thorax” section (but as usual it did a very different, but in some ways better, description of their lore/origins & racial abilities...), 5e did what it usually does by combining a few aspects of all of the above (with the exception of replacing 0e’s demonic aspects with an UnderDark/almost-Aberration twist...) but the resulting creation just looks like a giant purple engorging leach with legs... ha
