2024 Mazda3 vs Mazda CX-30 / Open and Shut?

  • On the surface, the CX-30 is a more versatile, AWD Mazda3 without a real price increase. After driving them back to back, the details favor the Mazda3. So which one is better?
    Key competitors to also consider include the Honda HR-V and Civic, Subaru Crosstrek and Impreza, Toyota Corolla Cross and Corolla, and countless others.
    Thank you, Royal South Mazda for letting me test drive some of the cars used in today's video!

    I got the CX-30 Sport Select 2 months ago and it seemed to have all the features my wife and I were looking for and for a better price than nearly any other brand that would often add $1,500 or more for all wheel drive and force you to buy packages to get the same safety feature set that all Mazda's come with. We're satisfied with our purchase and hope that our CX-30 will last 200k miles.

    I actually like CX-30's roofline and rear quarters better than the 3 hatch. But I can't get over the cheap looking plastic pieces and rear bumper, and the raised ride height. Ended up getting a 3 hatch turbo. Now 2.5 years into having this car, 2 major downsides of the 3 turbo: that torsion beam rear suspension and below average MPG by 2024 standards. If a Prius can get 220 HP (only 7 less than the 3's turbo on 87 gas) and almost 50 MPG with an independent rear suspension, Mazda has some serious catching up to do for their next generation of Mazda 3 if they decide to make it.
    Edit: Comparison test idea - Mazda 3 turbo vs Prius Prime

    • @stevenjames1138
      @stevenjames1138 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      Agreed. I think the biggest reason for the quality disparity was the countries where the different vehicles are assembled. Mexico may have cheaper labor costs, but that comes at the expense of quality.

    • @markcoopers1930
      @markcoopers1930 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Agreed. States and towns aren't willing to fix roads correctly, and they're laid out and designed so poorly. They've been awarding jobs to the lowest bidder or "the local guy" and it shows. And it's not like we get a refund because the town decided not to pay for a good job.
      In fact we get stuck with the costs: excessive and early wear to vehicles, higher chances of tires ripping or bubbling, higher purchase prices and gas costs as people are encouraged to get heavier and less aerodynamic form factors. Not to mention the safety factors taller vehicles with bigger blind spots pose at all speeds.

My Japan-built 2020 Toyota Corolla SE 6-MT sedan was a bag full of defects & problems & I ditched it after 2 years & 10K miles due to all the headaches (& 2 towing adventures after being left stranded across town). My France-built 2015 Toyota Yaris SE hatch 5-MT also was a problem-fee experience except for one very minor build defect that was easily corrected by the dealership. Times change. Made in Japan vs made elsewhere isn't what it used to be. It's mostly a roll of the dice these days.

    I wanted a MT Mazda3 but could not for this very simple but frustrating reason:
    I live in Quebec. We have garbage roads and harsh winters, and so the additional ground clearance, body cladding, and AWD are a must, for a vehicle you have to rely on during the winter months.
    I am planning on getting a MT Mazda3 in a few years, as a second vehicle, if they still offer them at that point 🙄

      There many manual transmission cars that are around, but like you said depending on locations in particular that limits a lot of options. Porsche still gives out manuals, but they are very pricey. Hyundais have some on their end, but they are phasing it out and they are FF cars. Toyota, Mazda, Subaru, and Honda being the last Japanese cars to offer manuals will again depend on the situation. WRX or the GR Corolla would be a pick for AWD system. Fun cars will be the BRZ, Miata, Mazda 3, Civic Type R. The other question is the stupid price and mark ups and is it worth it? Always those stupid reality questions.

In addition to the high center of gravity the CX-30 has a shorter wheelbase. Torsion beam comments to the side, the 3 handles corners far better. By comparison the CX-30 is on stilts.
    Plus I mean the looks alone, send in the 3 hatch, or the sedan. That cladding on the 30....
    Also the FWD mazda3, in addition to being significantly more efficient, gets an extra half gallon capacity in the fuel tank

    • @KyrosX27
      @KyrosX27 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's exactly the thing. I know it's not in the comparison but I love the CX-5. However, as someone who doesn't have to worry about hauling family, I'd prefer something smaller and was looking at the CX-30. I'd get the hatchback 3 but I like taking occasional camping trips so the elevation of the 30 is more welcome. I'd get a crosstrek but the sleepy upgraded engine worries me during long drives when I have to pass semis, RVs, etc.
      Now... congratulations to all who have the CX-30 and love the cladding but I absolutely abhor it. I loathe the cladding. I hate how it doesn't feel stylized at all - the new crosstrek and kona all have a buncha cladding but it's shaped in a way that at least it looks cool (imo). meanwhile, the CX-30's cladding is just 6 inches of following the curves and borders of the car. it feels lazy. It also reminds me of a starcraft 1's zerg overlord's lips lol.

      I saw some overseas body mod kits for the CX-30 making it look like pretty cool (again, imo) giant hot wheels-ish, raised hatchback car/suv thing which makes the cladding look more acceptable. but why would I buy a new car then spend extra for that? I could be spending that money clear coating the car instead or something.

    In Australia we get both FWD & AWD however most people purchase the FWD. This saves $3,000 for a weight saving of 200lbs and hence improved fuel economy on both counts. 99.9% of Australia never sees snow so AWD is irrelevant. Very well manufactured cars with excellent quality components however let down with gimmicks of iStop and cylinder de-activation and the engine is an Otto/Atkinson hybrid and is still a "beta" in my mind. The automatic transmission is also rather jerky as Mazda's software is certainly "trying" to lock up the clutch pack right down to just 15 mph which is just silly.

    Last year when I was shopping for my 5th Mazda in 40 years (83 626, 90 626, 07 Mazda6, 14 Mazda3--there was a 95 Ford in the middle), I measured the cargo areas up to the safe load line (no blocking the rear view or above the front seat backs) of the CX-30 and the Mazda3 5-door. With rear seats down the CX-30 is an inch longer and an inch taller but the Mazda3 is an inch wider, which I find more useful; the total difference is miniscule. Since the Mazda3's dimensions were so close to my 14 I knew it would work. The CX-30's price premium was actually larger because the cargo cover isn't standard, and it was still selling over list, while the Mazda3 was under. AWD fuel economy is identical. The CX-30 did have my preferred Deep Crystal Blue with White leather interior, but I also like the Polymetal Gray with Red leather, so that's the Mazda3 I bought. The lack of power liftgate doesn't bother me; I'm old but not infirm or lazy.

    Sara n Tuned channel said that in a vid called The Wildcard Option 2024 Mazda3 Turbo AWD Review that reviewed the 3. Go to 8:47 into the vid. She's done a ocmparision vid like this one, as well. Weirdly, she took the CX30 off road and it performed shockingly well. She's kind of manly and goes into more details about engines and tech points than most reviewers. I can't tell if it's her or if she's merely reading a script that someone else wrote (a man). I would guess the latter.
    I like your review style better and I'm not endorsing her. I couldn't understand half of what she said. She slurs her speech. She's sex ywith low cut tops but hard to understand and I'm not sure she knows what she is talking about. I'm guessing her first language is not English. Maybe Czech. But the accent is very slight. Most people wouldn't notice. I only noticed because she sounds like Ann deVille who moved to Czech and sounds that way now. I used to know her as a barista in Portland. I don't watch her vids.

    Mazda 3 saloon over the hatch in the UK over the CX30 which costs the most here. Saloon roomier in back than hatch, brighter and less claustrophobic. More cargo space with slight versatility hit. More planted on the road and best fuel economy of the the trio, as better drag figs. But bizarrely, everybody flocking to heavier crossovers here, causing potholes, drinking more fuel and killing more pedestrians. Funny old world.

    it's mad that mazda still gets away with selling cars without usable rear seats

    Might the difference in assembly & gaps be due to the fact that the CX-30 is assembled in Mexico & the Mazda3 in Japan? Just wondering.

      No, the sedan mazda3 here was also built in mexico

      All North American CX 30 and Mazda 3 are assembled in Mexico. In Australia we get the Made in Japan product.@@Realistick

    I wouldn't even consider a CX-30, because I'm a manual transmission snob.

    Still can’t get past the cylinder deactivation on the N/A 2.5 no one talks about this very much I know Chevy and other manufacturers have had nothing but problems so I will pass for that reason

      They were unreliable in the 80's and 90's, but GM is really the only one who has problems in the modern era with it (and not widespread). The trend amongst automakers is that when cylinder deactivation is first introduced there's 2-3 years of less reliability followed by years of it working just fine. Honda's have had it in their V6 without issue for well over a decade, and plenty of testimony of people owning vehicles long term with it.
      There are plenty of issues from people messing with the ECU on their car getting engine damage, but that's just a bad tune job on their part.

      @@markcoopers1930idk who pays you to say cylinder deactivation is trouble free but that feature will destroy any engine much quicker than normal. So far i cant find a single mechanic that recommends buying a car with it. People dont understand the physics of a piston moving in a cold cylinder.

    You have to be totally mental to buy a CX30 over a Mazda 3

    Unfortunately that jekyll & hyde engine is too gutless, has poor torque down low and is a mechanic's nightmare if anything remotely needs attending to. Under the bonnet is it ALL engine plus it's taken them over decade to make them passable for reliability for the long term. Not good Mazda!

      I believe they make the mazda3 in different places depending on which market and which car. Many are built in Japan but the sedan shown was built in… Mexico🇲🇽

      @Realistick indeed it depends on the market, I live in Australia and our CX30s are made in Japan, after a year I can't fault it.

    Say what!? I'm a "car guy". I love cars. I grew up anxiously awaiting the latest "Car and Driver" - not "CUV and Driver," "SUV and Driver" or "Truck and Driver". Big difference! Sorry, but with all due respect, nothing to see here.
