  • The Carrol Shelby classic V8 Cobra. Inspiring generations of revheads for 60 years from their teenage years until middle age, the Cobra has a reputation for being a bit tricky. What's it really like to drive?

Always wanted a Cobra. As much as I love what is happening with performance EVs, a Cobra must have side pipes and a burble!

They are a stunning looking car, but the 427 would have been a tricky beast.
Carroll Shelby once said "you might not be able to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but you can make a mighty fast pig."

The vagaries of that Cobra's handling are undoubtedly down to the design of that actual replica. They are all completely different under the body and largely unrelated to the original. A modern replica (such as a GD from the UK) is a different kettle of fish altogether. Trouble is, I want an electric one. Guess I'll have to build it. 😀

Ford small block ( with appropriate pipe work, is inarguably the best sounding V8 ever made (then maybe the old wheezy rover v8 - lol). real syrupy yet gutteral and agressive , not trhe 'tuned n manufactured noise they seem to think is better now adaysey.
cobras look like they are a living creature , gotta be the ultimate all over feel good car . thanks .
i beleive there were two only supercharged 427 c4 auto cobras made for the man himself and the other for bill cosby .. !!!
apparently death traps and any speed above brisk walking lol and impossible to keep cool, and had to be auto cause no manual was up to the torque pumped out, but also supposed to do 200 mph (322kph) on a salt flat somewhere.!!, although i suspect that was theoretical because WHO would be game to do such a speed.
and im sure only made at the time as the ultimate expression of power and cool in the 70s .

Did I hear correctly that the car runs on LPG? Is that common in Australia?

It varies between states NSW is very tough , to get it registered in 2003 with a Ford motor , to pass the emissions it had to run LPG

Yes indeed. Not very common though these days. LPG generally means lower compression though, so power is down a little bit on a petrol motor.
