    as one who has done what you say, muscle memory is a real thing for sure. it is real believe. you are so right there pretty lady. sometimes my hands seem to have minds of their own and just go where they want. it is a super feeling and I'm still not all that yet, but that is a marvelous marvelous feeling and you just can't believe what you just did. in fact, I had the same thing happen with my feet, ha ha, I just was in the woods and started doing a jig or something and my feet started doing things I did not know they could do and for the life of me could never repeat it. if only it was on tape. cool talk. your beautiful. carry on.

    As a beginner in music theory (been playing for 20+ years), I hit the wall with memorization of the scales. I was too focused on the note names, and going thru the Circle of 5ths and trying to remember the sharp note names. I've been searching around the web for help and tips, and this video showed up.
    With this video I learned that pairing up the Major and the relative minor is a good idea, in addition to only focus on 3 scales at each practice session. These two tips in addition to have the correct fingering on each scale printed out and in front of me, opened my eyes. Have only done two days but I feel the muscle memory is already helping a lot. Thanks!

    The third time I've watched this lesson. I'm still working on my scales to really know them, and after four months I've done Major and minor scales. In my mind, I think of a relative minor as if it is the Major. I've only dabbled in melodic and harmonic minors, maybe I'm not ready since I don't really know my minors as I should. Do you picture the minor scale and then flatten it in your mind? Or do you follow the tone-semi tone (whole-half for us Yanks) to play them?

    I like your videos. Clear and concise. I haven't checked your other 'scales' videos, but I notice here that you are playing the natural minor scales. When I first learned scales, I was only taught harmonic minors (the Michael Aaron books my teacher used as his basis for teaching only had harmonic minor scales for practice because they were, as it said, 'the most commonly used'). Because of this, I didn't even realise until much later that there were natural and melodic minor scales as well! Anyway... for scale practice, I've only ever used the harmonic form. Would you recommend practicing minor scales in all of the forms? The fingers used won't change, just the notes played, so I doubt it'll be too difficult to transition between the three. (I notice that some people play the melodic minor going up the keyboard and switch to the natural minor coming down). Maybe I should scoot over to check your other scales vids!

    • @BitesizePiano
      @BitesizePiano  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was playing a mix of natural, harmonic and melodic here. I recommend focusing on the natural and harmonic minors. The melodic minor is different ascending and different descending, so the people you’ve watched are correct.

      @@BitesizePiano I got up to Grade 3 many years ago, then gave up when I became a student and could no longer afford lessons. I've been self-taught since, but have had many years when I've not played at all. I've no real natural aptitude for music and have to work really hard at it. Being self-taught, I learned a lot of pieces 'by rote' - bar by bar, until they were memorised - without ingesting any of the theory behind what I was learning. As a consequence, if I'm playing a piece from memory and go wrong (frequently!), then I have no way of getting back into the piece and have to give up. I recently returned to the piano with renewed enthusiasm, and have started to learn more of the theory. My playing has certainly improved. I'm currently working on Clair de Lune, and have just about perfected it up to the point where the left hand arpeggios begin. I'm also starting to learn Chopin's Polonaise in A Major (my favourite) and am finding that the theoretical knowledge I've acquired through videos like yours is making it far easier. My technique has improved, too. Having started over 40 years ago, you'd think I would be a virtuoso player now. Not so. But I spent too many years as a self-learner, and not learning very well! Your videos are invaluable in helping me to progress now. Thank you.

  • @MartianTom
    @MartianTom ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Francesca. I have a quick question for you over something that's puzzled me re: major scales. When I learned the major scales, I learned them as C (no sharps or flats), then G, D, A, E and B with sharps... and F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db and Gb with flats. I also learned that F# and Gb were the same, but Gb was generally how the key was referred to. I learned this from the Michael Aaron books, and from a Circle of 5ths diagram my teacher at the time gave me. I now see, though, that Db is often referred to as C#, and B referred to as Cb. Some charts even have both F# and Gb as separate scales. I can't see any obvious reason for this, but maybe I'm missing something! I wondered if you could explain it, please. The only major scales I've ever practiced are the 12 I first mentioned above, along with their 12 relative minors (now expanded to include natural and melodic forms!)

    • @BitesizePiano
      @BitesizePiano  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say Gb and F# major are used just as much as each other. They both have 6 sharps/flats, so I don't agree with the books you have read! C# major is NEVER used and is instead Db major, also Cb major is NEVER used and instead B major, as they key signatures are simpler. I don't teach my students scales based on the circle of 5ths, because then they get too used to sharps first. I alternate between one sharp then one flat, 2 sharps then 2 flats etc.
      I'm making a free scales course very very soon, and all will be covered there!

    • @MartianTom
      @MartianTom ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BitesizePiano Thanks. I just thought it was odd that some piano scales charts referred to C# and Db, and to Cb. I'd always thought of them as Db and B. The ones I have refer to the 12 scales I've mentioned above - with Gb only. Other videos I've seen show 'The 12 Major and 12 Minor Scales', and have Gb and F# as the same - which they obviously are, note-wise. The difference, I assume, would be on the chord progressions being used. But they would still be the the same chords, surely, wouldn't they? Just with different names (either # or b)? I understand what you mean about the Circle of 5ths, as the tendency is always to follow it clockwise. I, too, learned alternate sharp and flat keys. For practice now, as a 'returner-learner', I'm tending to focus on the more difficult keys, with asymmetrical fingering when playing in contrary directions. It's definitely improved my accuracy! I was going to produce my own small vid for absolute beginners, showing an easy way to work out all of the keys/scales, major and minor, simply by sitting at the keyboard and focusing on counts and patterns. It's quite simple, as you know. I've always found it much easier to learn these things by seeing and doing rather than by looking at the theory written down. I used to find the circle of 5ths confusing, to be honest, but could now draw my own from scratch by following my own simple counts on the keyboard. I really like your videos. They're some of the best and easiest to follow. A few other tutors I tried either seemed to assume a fair degree of theoretical knowledge, didn't explain the concepts clearly, or were far too long. Bitesize is good for someone like me with ADHD. Thanks again. 🙂
