    This is probably the best, most straightforward lesson I have ever seen on practicing chords. Thanks for giving me something new to struggle with cuz that's the only way to get better.

    When I was a kid I was playing piano, and got quite good at it, but reached late teens, and had other interests, so the piano skills faded. Now, after playing guitar for 25 years, want to restore those piano skills. Thank-you for this video, I found it to be an excellent exercise, and proved to be very beneficial in my piano practice!!!

    • @jackster1212

      Commenting because my situation is much like yours. I had a few years of piano lessons as a kid, didn’t even make it to third grade before I quit in favor of getting outside to play with my friends. The day I told my mom I wanted to bail, she said, “You don’t understand yet how much you’ll regret this.” Decades later, she was right. I picked up the guitar in late high school and have played that now for more than 30 years. But the piano itch was still there. I started taking lessons via webcam (surprisingly effective) during the covid lockdowns. And now, any time we travel, I can’t wait to get back to our piano. This teacher above is one of the best and most patient out there. Also check out Pianote. (I’ve got my faves for guitar too, e.g. Paul Davids and another guy, I think his channel is the Guitar Nomad or something like that). One other footnote I want to add: I’m convinced that, while for some learning with technique first is the right way to go, for others… perhaps the majority, and especially with kids… the best way to start is by teaching them how to play songs they love. Let them back into theory. Very much the way we learn languages. They’re much less likely to quit and much more likely to find their love for the instrument and music early.

    First, thank you very much for this. When, "self-teaching," it helps to have something to actually practice, in order to create and maintain good habits. Second, at around the 14:55 mark I started to hear violin in my head as an accompaniment to the exercise; the start of a simple yet magnificent classical piece. I recorded myself humming it, in order to have a dear friend of mine who plays violin, and another who plays cello, help me create something magical with this scale. Thank you ever so much for the influence while teaching me.

    Thank you so much for this video! I was looking for routines to get truly familiar with chords on the piano, but some were topical at best, and others would just stop at telling me about the different chord shapes for the different qualities, nothing practical. This is certainly a set of practical exercises that I can put to use immediately, and even make it musical by exploring different progressions.
    I'm truly grateful!

    At last I’ve come across your tutorials. I love that you are teaching sequentially. Both my parents were professional jazz pianists. My two sisters and I were trained classically. Piano, violin and me ‘cello. I’m also a professional contemporary vocalist and my biggest regret was not studying piano when I was strongly encouraged to. So my time IS NOW. I want to learn to accompany my self so as not reliant on others for gigs. Your teaching is concise and doesn’t assume one should comprehend immediately hence your great one step at a time exercises. I’m a hungry student. Thank you.

    I really like this explanation and demonstration. This looks like the foundation for much more complex exercises as these become easier to perform... change keys, go backwards and forwards, and leap frog positions just to name a few. I can think of 3 or 4 other variations that can apply. Thanks for the putting this video together. 🙂

    Well done for the hard work of putting this together so clearly. For the very young, I teach them to master broken chords then arpeggios with both hands in root position plus solfataras ( which teach them the degrees and mode of the scale !

    • @davidleesn
      @davidleesn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ) . I would move them as soon as the time is right after that aural training to B major (Chopin’s preference) as the white keys only put them in the wrong trajectory in learning major and minor 3rd INTERVALS and most methods staying in C, G and F majors for early years leave much habitual confusion to finger placements... like using the wrong ends ( especially of Japanese ) chopsticks for eating !

    Rather than going from the major key to its parallel minor, with a completely different key signature, it makes more sense to study a major key and its relative minor keys within the same key signature. Do a key a day going in circle of fourths.

    • @BitesizePiano
      @BitesizePiano  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As explained in the lesson, I chose the parallel minor as it presents a new set of chords, else you’re playing the exact same chords as C major…so it doesn’t make more sense in terms of chord variation. Practising SCALES makes sense to play the relative major/minor, encouraging to think of them in pairs. This is just a chord exercise.
