This plant is often seen as a weed but can be a powerful element in a garden if maintained.

The term "naturalize" means that the plant is informally planted, made to look as if it naturally happened that way.

This hardy perennial is considered a herb. The roots are edible and can help in digestion.

In the wild it is often seen in spots subjected to periodic flooding.

My pond floods my pasture in spring and it usually drops 8’ every summer. I wonder if this would live in a foot of water for about a month before the water level dropped. False Fiddleleaf and wooly croton thrive in my pasture in those flooding conditions. Even under 3’ of water in spring. I’d like to plant more flowering plants in that area for my beehives. Pollinators go crazy for False Fiddleleaf. More than any other wildflower I’ve ever seen.

Vernonia gigantea is an excellent plant when used toward the back of a border. Even when not in bloom, it gives excellent vertical structure to the garden.

They are large and fast growing like a weed or roadside 'wildflower' where they are found often times. The purple blooms are very pretty and look attractive for flower fields and cottage garden designs has they have lots of foliage pairing with the pretty blooms.
